[misc] The pore shrinking myth

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I hope this was the right tag...So we all know the pores we were born with are the pores we've got. They don't shrink or grow. They don't have any muscular attributes so the cannot expand or contract. I'm sure we have all at one point during adolescence heard "wash with warm water to open your pores, and rinse with cold to close them"....what a load of BS. Recently at a restaurant I overheard a mother telling her daughter this same thing. Ahh! I have larger pores and as a (before easily accessed internet) young teen I was desperate to believe that cold water would shrink them. Anyways, fast forward to modern day...While combing through Amazon a lot of products tout pore minimizing effects. As far as I can tell, the ones that seem to "work" in minimizing pores contain some kind of acid that helps clear sebum. Though, I've seen some that do not contain any such ingredients but have rave reviews. What ingredients are key in the pore minimizing effect? have you used anything that surprised you by helping the appearance of large pores? Do you find that smaller looking pores are just a byproduct of healthy and cared for skin?(I've accepted my pores since teenhood, I'm not looking for a miracle, just curious as to others pore minimizing experiences.)

Ideas for dealing with low dew point/humidity? I'm shrivelling up :'( [Skin Concerns]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Alrighty guys, I'm at my wits end here!Where I live (Canberra, Australia), we're reaching the butt end of winter and that means it's DRY. Like, desert dry. The dew point today got down to -4 degrees celsius (25 fahrenheit) which means dry ass air. Add some indoor heating to the mix and it's miserable. When I get out of the shower I'm instantly dry all over. My face is starting to show the effects of this weather despite my best efforts. It feels like I have a sunburn (I don't) and it almost cracks when I move it. I sit here typing in a sheet mask covered by a silicone (Daiso) mask as a last-ditch effort. What do y'all do when it's dry as all hell? I want to hear about your daily desert skincare or the big guns you pull out on the odd occasion to help fix poor thirsty skin :( I usually layer several liquid layers (Hada Labo Light or Arbutin Lotion) followed by Jojoba oil then an occlusive like Vaseline. Is there anything else I should be doing? I'm waiting on a new humidifier, so in the meantime what else is there to do?P.S.: I'm very sensitive (read: cystic acne) to fatty alcohols and lanolin alcohol, to make it harder! Thanks in advance!!

[Sun Care] Applying moisturizer before chemical sunscreen?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey guys. I've been applying my moisturizer (Cerave PM) before my sunscreen (Biore Perfect Face Milk). I usually let my moisturizer sit for 10-15 minutes before applying the sunscreen.I did a bit of research but It's all mixed answers. Some say moisturizer before, some say after. It seems weird to apply my moisturizer after the sunscreen, wouldn't it rub the sunscreen off and etc? Is my sunscreen actually making contact with my skin if I have moisturizer on?This is important to me especially since I use a chemical exfoliant. I've been applying moisturizer before sunscreen for months. Thanks!

[acne] A big MUST for all acne sufferers and skincare newbies!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
This is a little reminder to all the acne sufferers out there: go get some tests done at the doctor's before you decide to purchase another useless skincare item, that worked magic for X and Y and Z. For the fast 4 years, I was so sure my acne was hormonal: deep painful cysts at the chin/ jaw area, a lot of facial hair, genetic androgen disease. Even my doctors assumed my acne was hormonal just by looking at my face, and just prescribed me oral contraceptives. After 1,5 years on it and no definitive results, I got off the pill and a year later I decided to actually check my hormonal levels. Even this time my doctor wanted to just describe me oral contraceptives again, but I insisted on the test. One week later (today) I find out, that my hormones are perfectly balanced. While being relieved, I realize how dumb I was to just make conclusions just because I have some symptoms. Next on my list is to get a general blood test, allergy tests to some food items and a stool test (to check if there is anything wrong with the intestines/stomach area). Every acne journey is so different, but you might save yourself a lot of time, stress and disappointment if you just run some basic tests before you commit to a new skincare routine or purchase someone elses's HG item. I know it is easier to just diagnose yourself with webmd or by scrolling down this sub for similar acne selfies other than going to an actual doctor. And I am not saying all doctors are so amazing and qualified, but there is still a higher chance you might find a reason for all your painful history of acne vulgaris in a medical test result, rather than online. Use this sub and all the other online sources to educate and inform yourself but not to diagnose. With the help of all the skincare junkies out here last time I went to my derm I knew what I wanted, I asked 20 questions and I immediately made a follow appointment in 2 months. Before that I would just show her my face with makeup on and just get a prescription without knowing how to use it...it would burn my face in a few days and I'd give it up assuming it's an allergy.

[Hauls] Reflections on TO and frugality

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been using products from The Ordinary for several months now (since getting into this sub), and today when I placed an order (gotta get those new antioxidants!) I had a bit of a realization.Since May, I've placed 6 orders, for a total of 19 products, and spent $150 (each order was approx $30 to get that free shipping). Before finding this sub, I took my skincare advice from a friend whose attitude seems to be "the more expensive it is, the better it must be." Shiny packaging and slick marketing aside, I could never really tell if the high-end stuff did any good.Since starting a proper routine and getting into TO products, my skin has never looked better, and I've been spending way less money on products of dubious effectiveness. The only thing I've run out of was the Azelaic Acid, which I replaced, and the only thing that didn't work for me was a too-light shade of the serum foundation (which I sent to my pasty sister - you're welcome, sis!)Even if I start to upgrade from TO to NIOD over the next year or so, the simple no-frills products from The Ordinary have allowed me to figure out what does and does not work for me, and therefore which ingredients I should be looking for in other products. It's also encouraged me to take a more scientific view of skincare - focusing on chemistry, not "luxury."So, I guess I just wanted to say thanks to the sub for encouraging people to get smarter, not fancier, with their skincare. Also, I am not a paid shill for The Ordinary. I just like it.

Dermatologist told me to NOT wear SUNSCREEN [Acne] [Sunscreen]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am currently on my 3rd week of accutane, I just went to the derm to check up. He told me that it is best to minimize the products I use on my face including sunscreen. He said that I do not need sunscreen everyday, only when you are in the sun for long periods of time(ie beach, pool) because the thick viscosity of sunscreen can clog my pores.I am really confused as to what to do, I know that taking accutane would make my skin really fragile, prone to uv damage and at worst make my hyperpigmentation last a lot longer, hence I need to protect my skin as much as possible. So what are your thoughts on this guys? What would u do if u were me?

[Skin concerns] I need help identifying what is wrong with my skin, how severe it is and if there is realistic hope for it. Involving redness, acne scars, volume loss, texture issues. I appreciate it, thanks.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi all,https://imgur.com/a/NXWSzSo my skin issues include chronic redness, indented scars, volume loss, some red scars, major texture issues. I had severe cystic acne on and off for over ten years, this is the result of that.I do still get very minor breakouts as you can see in the pictures, however I never get cysts anymore or severe acne. (That acne is well controlled via diet, basically I could have a face full of cysts within a week if I wanted to. Sugar and oil are major culprits for me, as are processed foods)My questions are:What is up with the chronic redness, is this rosacea or just from years of having acne inflammation? Dunno if it shows well in the photos but my face is always extremely red and I flush very easily. I also get little white pustules (not serious but they occur weekly, and I've read this is a sign of rosacea. They are very small.)What is the severity of my scarring? I don't mind blunt honesty. I was told by a dermatologist that I have severe scarring (with a grave look on her face 😜) and while I know it is bad, I can't help but compare it to people I've seen with pits and holes covering their entire face (the kind that really can't be hidden by makeup, for example). I feel like there's a difference between what I have going on and that. Mind is bad for sure but is it bad enough to classify as severe? I can hide a good portion with makeup, aside from the indents on the apples of my cheeks. In person, most people would not initially notice my scarring (or maybe I'm wrong haha). What type of scarring do I have?Is there any hope for my face? I say that knowing it sounds melodramatic, but I'm serious all the same. What can I do to improve the scarring and redness? Best plan of action? Do lasers need to be involved or can I do other things? Any input really appreciated.Products to use? What's worked for you? Thanks a lot in advance, I really appreciate it if anyone replies. And anyone reading this who has similar skin issues, you're not alone. Don't give up. There is always a way to make things better, always room for improvement, don't give up hope. Cheers.

[Skin Concerns] Do large pores need to be emptied?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I read a lot of posts on here regarding how to keep pores minimized and the right/wrong ways to go about maintaining clear pores. But from someone with larger pores (specifically on nose) do they need to be emptied or extracted from time to time? Regardless of the regimen I take to keep them clear, they eventually fill back up with sebum and after I exfoliate I can always see the pores that have those large sebum plugs in them just asking to pop out. Is it better to have them extracted and keep them clear to avoid the pore enlarging further? Or is it smarter to just stick to a regimen that keeps them under control and combat anything I can with salicylic acid and exfoliation?I want to make sure I'm taking the right steps to maintain my skin best as possible down the road and not do any irreversible harm now.

[Sun Care] UPDATE on 14 Sunscreen Review for medium-dark (ethnically Indian) skin, and REVIEW of 4 more sunscreens

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Here is a link to my original sunscreen review postFor reference, I have very very yellow-undertoned, ethnically Indian skin that is around an NC42 in depth. Since my last set of reviews, my skin type has changed slightly. It used to be combination with a super oily T-zone and a super dry around-the-mouth and under-the-eye area, but it’s since become more normal with the same dry patches. Any large pimples are typically acne related, but I have a bunch of closed comedones on my cheeks and forehead. My updated routine is:AMCleanse: Either one of the 2 LRP Toleriane Foaming cleanser if I’ve worked out that day, or LRP hydrating gentle cleanser if I didn’tSerum: Timeless Pure Hyaluronic Acid serum to a wet faceLotion: CeraVe PM, Vanicream moisturizer where I need extra MoistureSunscreenPMOil Cleanse: Simple Oil CleanserCleanse: Either LRP Toleriane Foaming cleanser (if using BHA later) or CeraVe SA cleanser (if not using BHA later)Exfoliant: PC 2% BHA (5 times a week), or TO 5% LA (1 time per week), or nothing (I usually do one rest day)Second Serum: sometimes TO Niacinimide, I’ve been pretty terrible at keeping up with thisMoisturizer: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial moisturizer Updates on Products I previously reviewed-I’m usually pretty good about using ¼ teaspoon of sunscreen, but for whatever reason, I seemed to have cheaped out on my EltaMD UV Shield and UV lotion. I sincerely apologize if I steered anyone wrong with my review of this product. Turns out, the white cast is about a 4 for both.-Replenix Sheer Physical Sun Cream SPF 50: I have since repurchased this product. I don’t think I mentioned this in my last post but this sunscreen never quite dries down, and that really bothers me. It remains tacky and very transferable throughout the day. It does, however, work very well under makeup, and it’s my go-to when I know I won’t have time to reapply throughout the day if I am going to be out in the sun a lot. However, it is not waterproof, so I do avoid it in particularly sweaty situations.-Jack Black Sun Guard: I have since repurchased this product. It is still my favorite sports sunscreen. It isn’t magical, but it stays on and keeps me protected without burning my eyes out while working out/sweating. I just wish there was a little less of a white cast.-I’m still in love with my Replenix Sheer Physical Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50+. I find that it does dry me out throughout the day, especially as my skin has become more sensitive andNEW SUNSCREENS1) Glytone Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 40Price: $38Volume: 4 oz.Type: CombinationIngredients: C13-14 Isoparaffin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Diethanolamine, Cetyl Phosphate, Disodium EDTA, Galactoarabinan, Hyaluronic Acid, Isopropyl Myristate, Laureth-7, Methylparaben, Octlydodecyl Neopentanoate, Phenoxyethanol, Polyacrylamide, Polyether-1, Polysorbate 60, Propylparaben, Sodium Hydroxide, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Water (Aqua).Repurchase: NoWhite cast: 5Review: This feels gross, it looks gross, it’s just gross. It feels incredibly heavy on the skin, it’s greasy yet drying, and the white cast is atrocious. All the reviews on dermstore raved about this product, and I just cannot see why. I much prefer the Jack Black Sun Guard to this as a sports sunscreen.2) Bare Minerals Prep Step SPF 50Price: $30Volume: 1 ozType: PhysicalIngredients: Zinc oxide 23.8% Titanium dioxide 4.1%. Inactive Ingredients: Coconut Alkanes, Caprylyl Caprylate/Caprate, Water, Squalane, Adipic Acid/Neopentyl Glycol Crosspolymer, Polyglyceryl-2 Diisostearate, Silica, Glycerin, Propanediol, Sorbitan Sesquiisostearate, Isostearic Acid, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Gentiana Urnula Flower Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract, Butylene Glycol, Magnesium Hydroxide, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Polyester-1, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Disodium Phosphate, Phenoxyethanol. May Contain: Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides.Repurchase: NoWhite cast: 5Review: I actually had to return this product. I have never returned a skincare or makeup product in my life, but this product was ridiculously expensive and there is no way I could even remotely get this to work for me. I can make other sunscreens I dislike work on my body, but there is absolutely no place I could use this sunscreen. If you are a darker girl, stay away! It looks like you put the wrong shade of foundation on, like most/all tinted sunscreens. If you have sensitive skin, the physical exfoliation you get rubbing this product in is going to irritate the heck out of you. The texture was weirdly greasy and never quite dried down. I almost feel like I just got a bad one? But the tint was enough to make me never want to try it again.3) A’Pieu Pure Block Aqua Sun Gel SPF 50+Price: $11Volume: 1.67 ozType: ChemicalIngredients: Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Octinoxate, Alcohol, Octocrylene, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Octisalate, Butylene Glycol, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Avobenzone, Dipropylene Glycol, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Tinosorb S, Saussurea Involucrata Extract, Citrullus Lanatus Fruit Extract, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract, Dimethicone, Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Isohexadecane, Polysorbate 80, Potassium Hydroxide, BHT, Polysorbate 60, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Disodium EDTA, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Fragrance, BemotrizinolRepurchase: NoWhite cast: 0Review: So this purchase was part of me trying to dip my toe into Asian sunscreens. This product was a fail. While it was invisible, it looked greasy on me. Sososososo greasy. I tried applying this product in thin layers, waiting 10 minutes in between each thin layer (which is more time than I would ever want to devote to sunscreen application), and it was still shiny. Additionally, I don’t think my face particularly likes the fragrance and alcohol, and I still do not entirely trust the protection of Asian sunscreens.4) Missha All Around Safe Block Aqua Sun GelPrice: $12Volume: 1.67 ozType: ChemicalIngredients: Water, Homosalate, Alcohol Denat., Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Dipropylene Glycol, Silica, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Isoamyl P-Methoxycinnamate, Octocrylene, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Limonia Acidissima Extract, Methoxy PEG/PPG-25/4 Dimethicone, Bis-PEG/PPG-20/5 PEG/PPG-20/5 Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sodium Hydroxide, Butylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, BHT, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, FragranceRepurchase: YesWhite cast: 0Review: I really like this product, but it’s still not perfect. No matter how much I seem to moisturize, this product makes my skin feel tight and dry within a couple of hours. It dries clear and matte to the touch, but with a shiny finish, which I found kind of odd. I can take the shine down with translucent powder. I don’t think my skin loves the fragrance and/or alcohol, because if I wear this for a few days consecutively, my skin starts burning after cleansing or when I put on my moisturizer. I have repurchased this product because I wear it when I know pictures will be taken that day and I want to get away with maybe some concealer and eye makeup, and this works perfectly because I don’t have any whitecast to cover with cakey foundation, and this product plays well with my concealer (oh how I wish my cetaphil moisturizer would play well with makeup!). The replenix spray sunscreen that I love works perfectly with my concealer too, and is generally kinder to my skin, but it definitely causes some serious flashback and even just unflattering white reflection without flash in photos. However, my skin is too sensitive to wear this Missha sunscreen every day, and I still do not entirely trust the protection of Asian sunscreens. Especially with topical exfoliants, I’m almost afraid I’m doing more long term damage than good using an AHA a couple nights a week with only this as my protection. I have repurchased this simply because I have not found anything better to replace this, but I am always paranoid that I’m causing more long term damage to my skin when I rely on this as my only sun protection. Edited for formatting.

[B&A] SCA taught me to take care of myself

Beauty Tips For Body Care
~Apologies for the long post~Here is a series of before and after pictures from beginning to follow a skincare regimen based on the advice of Skincare Addiction: the photos are taken approximately eight months apart.http://imgur.com/a/0u41hI happened upon this subreddit when, for whatever reason, I picked up a bottle of CeraVe cleanser at CVS and did a quick google search (afterwards, because that makes sense) to see how high-quality it was. I figured it was pretty nice, because I had spent about 15 bucks on it-- which was 15 bucks more than I had literally ever spent on skincare. I didn't grow up learning to even wash my face besides in the shower, much less to put effort/time/money into a skincare routine.I honestly didn't grow up learning to do a lot of things-- to floss my teeth and use mouthwash, to pay attention to what I eat, to exercise, to drink water. I grew up drinking soda and juice like water because I had nobody to tell me better. When you are poor and your family has been poor for generations, there are no healthy habits to be passed down-- your family all smokes several packs a day, eats hamburger helper for meals, and dies before they're sixty. When you're living off food stamps and your single mother is working two or more jobs just to keep a roof over your head, nobody has the time or money to pick out the "right" foods to put in your body. When your mother is trying to take you and run as fast as she can from a past with an abusive, drug addicted*/dealing father, she has no time to tell you how to properly take care of your teeth or body or skin.*I want to be very clear that I don't mean poorly of people who are addicted to drugs. The manifestation of his addiction was simply unsafe for my mother and I.The depth of knowledge on this page fascinated me so much, and I decided to take up a beginner's Skincare Addiction routine. I began by just using the CeraVe cleanser for dry skin once a night followed by CeraVe moisturizer (also moisturizing in the morning). I learned to use Garnier Fructis's micellar water for taking off my makeup instead of just water. And then a deal came out for Paula's Choice BHA liquid exfoliant, so I decided to try it-- which turned my (skincare) life around!! And so I stuck with this routine, even with the odd college hours-- I even brought spare sets of my product to my boyfriend's place.I loved seeing my skin improve-- slowly, but surely. I could feel the effects of treating my body nicely, and enjoyed the routine of self-care. So I realized that I would probably start feeling better if I took care of my body in other ways too. I started working out more often-- made an effort to re-join volleyball, which I had loved in high school, via intramurals. I started going to the gym and working out in what ways I could, despite my severe asthma. I finally went and saw a doctor about my sleep problems-- and was diagnosed with a serious case of sleep apnea, for which I now use a CPAP (and feel 100% better during the day). Though my diet has by far been the hardest thing to change, I'm working to completely cut out sugary drinks and make better choices. When I was home for the summer, instead of eating the Ramen and macaroni my mom left for me, I went out and bought my own mixes of spinach greens as well as chicken breast to make salads and wraps with. I made my own water mixes to curb my cravings for soda. I used the unfortunate amount of time I spent sitting in my room to sign up for a city volleyball league and dance classes for when I return to school. Before I found this community, I had never known what it was to take care of my body outside of being sickened by my weight and size. Beginning a skincare routine and interacting with this community has pushed me to continue taking care of my self for just the sake of taking care of myself rather than simply an end goal of weight/clear skin/mile time. I just want to thank each and every one of you for giving me the courage and motivation to do this!Bonus fun facts: - See the scar on my cheek same side of my nose ring? I was born very late, and too big to be in my mother's womb. I was so cramped that I scratched my face up, and that's on of the scars! - See the candy-cane shaped scar above my right eyebrow? (final picture). That was from when a friend drew their straw out of their cup and stabbed me in the face with it on accident-- about sixth grade.

[Research] Oxidized Vitamin C Appears To Be Necessary for Proper Collagen Formation

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I know, you’ve “reddit” a zillion times, how oxidized vitamin C is so terrible for your skin. But is it true?It has been known for decades that vitamin C is necessary for proper collagen formation. This knowledge was gained by scientists studying the disease called scurvy. Cells called fibroblasts create and deposit collagen into the basement membrane and connective tissues of the skin, keeping the skin pliable and elastic. The specific function of vitamin C in this process occurs in a sub-compartment of the cell called the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER). Obviously then, vitamin C must be able to get inside the ER to perform this important function, but something that has not been clear has been how vitamin C gets into the ER.But in just the past few years, researchers studying a different disease have made inroads into this vitamin C transport mechanism, and in an article published just this week provide further experimental data that strongly supports a surprising conclusion: That vitamin C is transported into the ER in its oxidized form called dehydroascorbic acid.http://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/18/8/1820/htm

[PSA] Sharing my customizable Ingredients Cross-Checker -- copy/paste a product's ingredients in and it will highlight anything you need to avoid.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been dealing with seborrheic dermatitis for what feels like forever now, and for quite a while I've been under the impression that I simply needed to avoid products with parabens, oils, and fragrance. Then I recently came across this amazing blog post on Simple Skincare Science which showed how wrong I was and why my skin wasn't completely clearing up.There was no way I'd be able to remember all those "to be avoided" ingredients, plus, it would take forever to manually cross-check each product, so I had the idea to create an Excel/Google Sheet where I could copy/paste a product's ingredients list into one cell, and anything that matched with a specified list of bad ingredients would automatically be highlighted. Some awesome people on the Google Drive forum helped me bring it to fruition, and I want to share with everyone else!A Read Only copy can be found here. You will need to make a copy to your own Google Drive or download as an Excel spreadsheet to be able to make changes. I'm leaving the Avoid list as needed for seb derm as a favor to my fellow sufferers, because it's such an extensive list and I don't want them to have to type it all themselves when I already have it.Using this, I was able to quickly go through my current skincare stockpile and find out which products needed to be tossed/given away (it was about 90% of what I had D:).

[Personal] Wanted to thank you guys for helping a dude out

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Bit about me-I'm an Indian American teenager living on one of the coasts. I used to do some modeling as a part time job for some pretty well-known brands. Last year, however, I started breaking out a lot and at that point I really didn't know much about skincare and soon I developed those really ugly dark acne scars. I felt pretty shitty about it and pretty soon I wasn't doing anymore shoots with the obvious reason being my pretty prominent scars on my back and face. I came across this subreddit a few months ago and there's so much good info here and the sidebar, in particular, was a god sent gift. Fast forward to today and I'm happy to say virtually all of my scarring has gone away, I no longer break out and I recently scored another modeling gig. Thanks guys :)Morning- SulfaCleanse 8/4, Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum, CosRX Blackhead Power Liquid, VaniCream Moisturizer, Elta MD SPF 46,Evening- SulfaCleanse 8/4, Nip+Fab Glycolic Extreme Fix Pads, VaniCream Moisturizer

[PSA] Skincare free trial "scam"

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi, reddit! My mom recently got into a "scam" from an ad while she was paying her Telus bill. The ad was for a free trial of skincare products, but little did she know that after 14 days they would charge her $400 on her credit card that she provided when they asked her to pay for $5 shipping and processing fee. What's infuriating is that the original website did not reasonably prompt her to read the terms and conditions at all and there was no check boxes to her agreeing to the terms. (http://comagingcare.com/skin-balance/ ) In fact, the first page doesn't have a link to terms and conditions, and if you follow through to the trial page, you have to scroll all the way down to the very bottom through huge claims about how good the products are in bold colourful statements before you get the tiny greyed out terms and conditions hyperlink. Aside from the terms and conditions, the website has no information about these reoccurring charges. Shouldn't it be by law that terms/conditions and reoccurring charges should be reasonably stated before following through with the order? I am in Alberta, Canada. To make matters even worse, the terms and conditions on that website is different than what was charged. The initial conditions showed less than $100, but we were charged $200 each product (she ordered 2) with the new terms and conditions on the credit card bill. Additionally, these were in US dollars which was never specified in the terms but it should be in CAD since it's a "Canadian offer only". What shows up on the credit card bill is through these websites that only links to terms and conditions (not even a main page), not the original website that we ordered off of. This means they are specifically aiming for people falling into the terms and condition trap: -glowskinglobal.com -myglowskinnow.com -webskintoday.com -getskinready.comI approached my mastercard dispute department and will do so again with this new found information. They said before that because of terms and conditions, they can't refund me. I have also contacted the company and they will absolutely not refund or let me return my unopened product as it's past 14 days. The day we ordered was considered day 1, and we didn't even receive it till a week later! I contacted them on the 15th day. These cases have been occurring before in the UK. (2 of the above websites were actually charged in UK) There are also several reports in the UK (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2945236/Bank-warns-free-skin-cream-costs-80-month-Thousands-mistakenly-signing-subscriptions-registering-free-samples-online.html )My credit card company already know about these websites as they said 1000s of Canadians fell for this before, and they blocked my credit card when the charges happened so I would call them and cancel future shipments. The next step they should do is to completely reject these reoccurring charges because they know no one actually agreed to the $400 charge. This UK skincare scam banned in the UK is moving on to Canadians and this business model is honestly predatory. Terms and conditions and reoccurring charges should be clearly stated in a reasonable amount of effort. I will be reporting to this to consumer services. Be careful about this tactic because the company has multiple different names and websites!! Please help let other people know about this.

[Skin Concerns] Aztec Clay masks have single handedly ruined my skin and I don't know what to do.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I had a bunch of sebaceous filaments and some CC's on my face that I wanted to clear up so I decided to buy Aztec clay to use as a mask once a week. I'd mix it with apple cider vinegar.Soon after starting this I noticed my face texture changing to really bumpy, like it was filled with CC's. I thought maybe I was purging so I continued to use the mask a few more times until I made the connection.....no, no this isn't purging. Now my face is filled with CC's all over it. Forehead, cheeks, jaw, chin. I don't even know what smooth skin feels like anymore, not one area of my skin is smooth. It feels like someone elses face is on my face.I don't even know what to do anymore. This was like 2 months ago and these bumps are still here and I'm too scared to put anything else on my face. There's too many to extract myself with a tool.

[Review] How a water filter greatly improved my skin.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
When I moved into a condo with my boyfriend, I went from great well water at my parents' house to city water. I had lived with well water my whole life, so I never experienced the long-term havoc chlorinated water can do for sensitive skin.Within 2 weeks of city water, my skin was breaking out with red dots in random places on my body like my wrist, thighs, and arms. I have been dealing with scalp psoriasis since puberty though it has settled down a lot since leaving my teen years. Suddenly, the psoriasis was back on the top front of my head passed my hairline, and it spread in splotches throughout my head. This was around the same time that I joined r/skincareaddiction. My newly bought 8% Lactic Acid (AHA) exfoliator from SilkNaturals was a game changer but my skin started drying out when weeks of near daily use had no effect. No amount of cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliating could negate the damage the chlorine in citywater was causing from daily showers.Within 5 weeks of moving out, we bought and installed this filter and used this cartridge.A week later, the spots are gone. My dry face scaled away to clean, even toned skin. The psoriasis was nearly gone.Since then, we diligently replace the cartridge every 6 months. In fact, I know it's time to replace the cartridge when my psoriasis returns. This time around, the SO took 2 weeks to do it and my scalp is covered again. I gave him an earful while he applied my medicated ointment to my head.Buy a water filter. Seriously. You don't know the difference it can make for your skinInstalling was relatively simple. You just redirect the water pipes to go through the filter with shut-off valves. When he replaces the cartridges, he shuts the water off, drains the pipes, replaces the filter, screws the whole canister back on, and turns the water back on. Easy peasy 10 mins to make a world of difference for my skin.

[sun care] relationship between % active ingredient and SPF rating?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My current sunscreen, Invisible Zinc Daily Moisturiser SPF30, claims to be 20% zinc oxide. The SPF50 sunscreen from that same brand apparently has 25% zinc oxide. My current Avene mineral sunscreen I think has something like 6% zinc, but claims SPF50. I emailed Missha asking what the percent zinc was in their All Around Safe Block Waterproof SUN SPF50 PA+++, and a rep told me it was 6.9%.I don't know anything really about the science involved, so can somebody pls help clarify how products with a much lower % zinc can claim a higher SPF? Or any helpful links? Would also love it if anyone could shed some light on this topic generally, about how formulation impacts SPF :)If it's relevant, the Invisible Zinc products use micro zinc, Avene uses nano, and I'm unsure about Missha. [Personal] Was finally beginning to feel good about my skin, then a Clinique SA set me right back to square one =(

Beauty Tips For Body Care
After getting my routine down and beginning to see some actual improvement in my skin, I've been feeling kinda good about myself recently. I have eczema, rosacea, combination-dehydrated skin with lots of uneven texture/clogged pores on my forehead and chin. Lots of fun. Following my routine, the redness has faded dramatically, to the point where some days I feel okay not wearing makeup anymore, my skin is no longer sensitive, it's more balanced, and my texture is slooowly evening out. Realistically, it's still very far from perfect, but it's an improvement.Unfortunately, I made the mistake of letting a Clinique SA spot me today when I was checking out the Turnaround lotion as a potential toner substitute for the Moisture Surge spray, as I haven't been finding it as hydrating as I'd hoped. The minute she saw me, she exclaimed that she could see how red my nose and cheeks were through my makeup and that my face was so unevenly textured, and began loading me with samples of their redness moisturiser and turnaround serum instead. I left on the verge of tears, because I'd checked my face in the mirror before I went out and thought I was actually having quite a good skin day. I know I'm being silly cause she was just trying to help and didn't pressure me into buying anything, but I feel so down now that it makes me not want to try the samples she gave me.Has anybody else had this happen to them? How do you deal with blows to your confidence like this?

I was googling the ingredients to Pixi's Glow Mud Cleanser and came upon this manufacturing company. The ingredients between the Raya Glycolic Mud Cleanser and Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser are almost identical:Raya Glycolic Mud Cleanser:Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Diatomaceous Earth, Glycerin, Glycolic Acid, Sodium Glycolate, Lauroamphocarboxyglycinate and Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, Squalane, Caprylyl Glycol, Anthemis Nobilis Flower (Chamomile)Extract, Saponaria Officinalis Leaf/Root Extract, Hexylene Glycol (and) Fructose (and) Glucose (and) Sucrose (and) Urea (and) Dextrin (and) Alanine (and) Glutamic Acid (and) Aspartic Acid (and) Hexyl Nicotinate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Corylus Avellana (Hazelnut) Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Xanthan Gum, Fragrance, Guar Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Citric AcidPixi Glow Mud Cleanser:Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Diatomaceous Earth, Glycerin, Glycolic Acid, Sodium Glycolate, Lauroamphocarboxyglycinate and Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, Squalane, Anthemis Nobilis Flower (Chamomile) Extract, Saponaria Officinalis Leaf/Root Extract, Hexylene Glycol (and) Fructose (and) Glucose (and) Sucrose (and) Urea (and) Dextrin (and) Alanine (and) Glutamic Acid (and) Aspartic Acid (and) Hexyl Nicotinate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Corylus Avellana (Hazelnut) Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Xanthan Gum, Fragrance, Chlorphenesin, Guar Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Citric AcidI know Glow Tonic is holy grail among some people (and disliked by others) so I decided to check if they had anything similar to that as well. Though not as close as the cleanser, the ingredients are still fairly similar.Raya Ginseng Astringent Toner:Deionized Water, Aloe Vera and Witch Hazel and Horse Chestnut Extracts, Glycolic Acid and Ammonium Glycolate, Glycerin, Glucose and Fructose and Sucrose and Urea and Dextrin and Alanine and Glutamic Acid and Hexyl Nicotinate, Ginseng Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Biotin, Polysorbate 20, Fragrant Oil.Pixi Glow Tonic:Water/Aqua/Eau, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycolic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Hexylene Glycol, Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose, Urea, Dextrin, Alanine, Glutamic Acid, Aspartic Acid, Hexyl Nicotinate, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Biotin, Panthenol, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum), Caramel, Red 4 (CI 14700)It appears Raya sells their products through their Spa website, where their toner is $16 for 6 oz vs $29 for 8.5 oz with Pixi, and their cleanser is $16 for 8 oz vs $18 for 4.5 oz with Pixi.Granted, I don't know a whole lot about how manufacturing companies or private labeling works but I found it interesting and thought someone here might know more. If this is in fact who they purchase their products from, it might be a cheaper way for people to buy Pixi?

Hey all, I've recently concluded that my acne marks are, in fact, PIE and from what I've researched- treatments are pretty limited. I was wondering what, other than lasers and silicone sheeting, has helped your PIE?

[Personal] A big 'Thank You' to everyone here.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Warning: Long post ahead, sorry. ;)I want to let everyone in this community know how much you have helped me. My skin is - finally - making progress and it's due to everything I learned on this sub.A bit of backstory: I have had oily skin my whole life. So does my mom so I assumed it was just my genetic blessing. I have always used makeup to cover it up and only dabbled a little with skincare. I had a (very) basic routine and maybe a mask for fun every now and then. About a year ago, my HG primer (No7 Beautifully Matte Makeup Base) was discontinued and I was at a loss. I spent so much money trying every primer under the sun to no avail. I did however learn that silicone in products only makes things worse, which was a huge realization for me. Once I started looking at ingredients in my makeup, it took me to looking at ingredients in my skincare. In trying to understand what all these things meant, I found this sub.At first it was all so overwhelming. But the more I read, the more things started to make sense. I wasn't moisturizing enough. I was using scrubs that were way too harsh (I'm looking at you St. Ives). I wasn't giving my skin anything that was beneficial, so why would it look good? I had to give it some love so it could love me back.Certain ingredients started standing out to me, such as gylcolic acid and niacinamide. I looked at the ingredients of what I knew worked for me and used that as a starting point to start incorporating new products in my routine. The majority of them got returned but a few worked really well and I kept them around. I apparently have very weird and picky skin and things just don't seem to work for me like they do others. After a lot of trial and error, I have managed to build a pretty solid routine for myself that is finally showing some great results. It wasn't easy though. I was so discouraged and so ready to give up, not that long ago actually. But this sub helped me to remain engaged and helped me to have more confidence in what I was doing. Before, my entire face and neck were an oil slick by the end of the day, coating all the texture and bumps. Now by the end of the day I have a few little oily spots but that's it. My skin is smoother and brighter and looks healthier. I still have a ways to go but at least now I know I'm on the right path. And it's all thanks to you guys. So to everyone here - thank you so much!!!! I couldn't have done it without you, seriously. This sub really does help people and I hope you guys don't forget that!My current routine: AM: •La Roche-Posay Toleraine Purifying Foaming Cleanser •Cosrx AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner •Skinfood Lettuce & Cucumber Watery Essence •Dermadoctor Picture Porefect Pore Minimizer •Mario Badescu Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater SprayPM: •Garnier Micellar Water (to remove makeup) •La Roche-Posay Toleraine Purifying Foaming Cleanser •Cosrx AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner •Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid (every other night) •Skinfood Lettuce & Cucumber Watery Essence •The Ordinary Niacinamide & Zinc •Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Power Essence •Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Miracle Hydrating Mist and/or •Skinfood Peach Sake Emulsion (if I need something heavier) •The nights I don't use Cosrx BHA Blackhead Liquid, I will use either Murad Daily Superfoilant or Skinfood Freshmade Watermelon Mask, depending on how my skin is feeling.I know it seems like a lot but I have found that my skin reacts better to multiple, thin layers as opposed to fewer, heavy layers. I'm still working on my hydrating layers so if anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them!Hopefully this helps somebody out there on a similar journey. :)

[PSA] Annoyed with Paula's Chloice

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I found Paula's Choice through this forum and wanted to report back.So far the products that I've tried didn't really make a difference in my skin, and I tried about 5. I really found the niacinamide booster did nothing for my PIH and I've been using it consistently for almost 4 months. On their website it says 100% money back guarantee on the top of their page, which made me a little less hesitant about buying a product from an online store ... BUT that's not entirely true. It's true if you return it within 60 days. That doesn't make much sense since it takes at least 60 days to figure out if the product, especially one like this, is even working. After 60 days you get a store credit, which I don't want. I want my money back, like the website claims.Another thing that really annoyed me is that they completely altered my review on the product. I wrote that I contacted customer service before my 60 day window and never got a response ( I needed a new form because I used the original to return another product). They changed it to say "..Also, I didn't realize that there was a 60 day return policy if you are not satisfied with a product. I would have contacted customer service a couple of weeks ago and returned it but I guess I am outside of that window now.."...What bogus! I can't believe they would completely flip my review like that. That is not what I said. It's really frustrating that they get away with stuff like that.I'm just tired of spending money on skin care products and not seeing any improvement.

[Product Question] Efficacy of Infrequent Use of BHA?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
To those skincare buffs out there who use BHAs, have you been able to use a BHA infrequently enough that you see the benefits of using it (namely a clearer, less clogged complexion) but you don't get the irritation and dryness? Say, twice (or even once) a week, no more frequently than that?I first tried salicylic acid (Paula's Choice original 2% liquid) about three years ago, and after using it every other day for a while, I thought that some closed comedones were coming to the surface, but my skin suffered from dryness, peeling, irritation bumps, and general sensitivity from the aforementioned symptoms. After a little more than a month, with feeling unsure whether my skin was purging, the BHA was causing new breakouts, or my rough skin texture was due to irritation bumps from damaged skin, I gave up, thinking that using a BHA wasn't worth it. Nothing can throw off my lipid barrier more than a BHA product, even if it's a low percentage, while I can use much more concentrated AHA products with few negative consequences. For the last couple of years, I've tried on and off to make BHAs happen for my skin. I've used a myriad of products (nothing below 2% though), but no matter what BHA product I use, I still get irritation. However, I can't seem to completely part with BHAs because a) I know soooo many people who have completely changed skin for the better because of them and b) there have been times where using a BHA has brought to the surface a really stubborn comedone that an AHA couldn't reach, yet in the process, the BHA wrought havoc to all the skin surrounding the comedone with dryness and peeling, etc.I've heard a lot about people using their BHA products multiple times a day or every other day, but have people on this subreddit had luck with using a BHA product consistently, but less frequently, than that? I can't stand the irritation from frequent use (every other day for my skin is frequent use), but I want my pores de-gunked! Using a BHA less frequently but over a longer period of time, have you guys seen a marked difference in your skin with its use?

[rant] [misc] Friend recently started selling RF and thinks it's Gods gift to earth and every other product is trash

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My first post here but long time lurker!I have never really had major acne issues but have received a lot of good info from this sub and have drastically improved my skin health. My friend knows I have had some acne issues but I haven't really seen her since I stopped wearing face make up and started focusing on my skins health.Said friend recently started selling RF and has been trying to sell me this like $200 regimen that doesn't even have everything I like in it. Today I put all my products I use in a line and posted a picture on social media of what I use (like 7 products total for morning and night). So my friend messages me and is saying it "seems like a lot of work" and isn't "specially formulated to work together" like her products are... blah blah blah. Basically that I may as well be putting dirt on my face if I'm not using RF.I don't know why it irritated me so much but my skin has come so far with the products I have tried from this sub and I am so happy that I didn't spend anywhere near that amount on the same (maybe even subpar) result.

[DIY] DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi! Today I decided to make a DIY version of the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil. It's fairly easy and inexpensive to make and it'll save you money.Original DHC Deep Cleansing OilOlea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Pentylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopherol, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil. My RecipePercentageIngredient69.50%Olive Oil15%Caprylic/CapricTriglyceride5%Olivem 3005%Cromollient SCE2%C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate2%Vitamin E1%Phenonip0.50Rosemary EO NotesOlivem 300 is a good substitute for Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate but I didn't want to add too much of it (it's dispersible in oil and not completely soluble) and neither I wanted to leave the solubilizer percentage at 5% so I added 5% of Cromollient SCE as well. At the end, it also comes down to personal preference. You're free to make your own substitutions (for example, you could use Polysorbate 80 but IMO the end product won't feel as good on the skin as it would with these two) as well but make sure to research the ingredient and don't exceed the recommended usage amount. I used C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate as a substitute for Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate which isn't available for purchase by private individuals (at least I didn't find it after looking for almost a week...I only found it on Alibaba). You can use substitute it with other esters or any light oil if you want but I prefer to use this one. Vitamin E is added at 2% instead of 1% because that's the minimum recommended percentage for the one available on the USA website of NDA.  Recipe for 2.5 oz / 70.35 gPercentageIngredientPrice48.56 gOlive OilNDA$0.4410.5 gCaprylic/CapricTriglycerideLC$0.243.5 gOlivem 300LC$0.083.5 gCromollient SCELC$0.211.4 gC12-15 Alkyl BenzoateLC$0.031.4 gVitamin ENDA$0.101.05 gPhenonipLC$0.080.35 gRosemary EONDA$0.08Total cost: $1.26 vs $14 (actually $15 for 2.5 oz)Keep in mind that I calculated the prices from the smallest quantities available. If you buy a bigger quantity of an ingredient it's even cheaper than $1.26! I hope you guys like this and find it useful :) it took a lot of time to research the substitutions, ideal amounts of each ingredient etc.

[Personal] UPDATE: I haven't canceled my date despite my acne acting up : THANK YOU!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
First things first : you guys are amazing!! Your kind words and encouragements helped me keep true to my words and maintain my confidence on the way there. It may not seem like much to each of you individually but the collective support felt tremendous to me. I didn't expect my post to gather so much attention and solidarity. You are a great community and everyone of you deserves to have one opportunity to feel how great you all are one way or another. As for the date, it went great in my opinion. I had genuine fun and didn't think too much about my insecurities during that time. And yes: I spent the night at his place wink wink. So I had the challenge of the "morning after no-makeup face" but I survived that too. I don't know where this will lead next, but hopefully to more fun times in future. Anyway, thanks again everybody! Have a lovely weekend. 😘

I've been maintaining my skin all week in the prospect of my date tonight with a guy I really like but don't really know very well yet. That means he hasn't quite seen how bad my acne could be and I might spend the night so maybe my face will be fully revealed. I'm gathering all my inner strength and, fuck it, just going for it (I'm the one who asked him out so I have to own up to it). Anyway, fingers crossed, fellow Skincare Addicts! 🤞

[Personal] I'm feeling pretty rubbish, I don't like any products and I don't understand why my face is red and flakey.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My face is red a lot, especially a long the Tzone but generally everywhere giving me reverse panda eyes. I have SF and blackheads a long my nose, side of nose, and forehead. Acne on the chin and other t-zone places, from both shaving and acne prone skin. My skin is sensitive and very pale. Most importantly though, it is red. Whenever I wash my face or have a shower it goes even brighter red and I get dry dead bright white specks of skin all over my forehead appearing. What could that be? This all came on from drying my skin out with cleanser and an BHA exfoliator but for the last 11 months of care I still haven't improved it. Even with Derm treatment.my routine has been basic for last 10-11 months, of only moisturising and washing with water AM and PM, here is a list of most the products I've tried: irritationsThe best product I've used so far has been superdrug simply hydrating serum not sure if helping but it definitely covers up the flakes like any moisturiser but also reduces redness and feels great however it contains lactic acid and If my skin is damaged I should avoid aha imo. I also don't have a regular sunscreen as they all cause spots but do have one for when i go outside. I also quite like hada labo gokujyun hyalaunoric acid but only just started trying that.my current routine for last 2 weeks was AM: water, serum, sunscreen, PM: water, serum.before that I've tried:vaseline for PM occlusive (removing it in the morning seemed to cause more harm to my forehead and caused acne)cleansers (dried my skin, even water was drying my skin out and hurting my forehead)

[Acne] Adding BP to my routine

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey, first post here.I currently wash my face with a special lotion in the shower (it's called Ecelon) and put on salicylic acid all over my face after showering for my acne (I have mild acne, a pimple or two at a time usually). However, the pimples I do have bother me a lot and I was thinking of adding BP to the mix. Do you think this is worth it? I've read that people quit BP and have their acne come back worse than ever, is there any truth to this?Thank you!Edit: Also, in what order should I use them? Both after the shower? Which one first?
