[Misc] I quit vaping/nicotine for the first time since in six years. Here's what I've noticed, skincare wise, so far.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey. I wanted to make this thread as possible inspiration for anyone else on SCA who vapes, smokes, or uses other nicotine products. I wont get into how I quit, as that's not relevant for this sub, but feel free to ask in the comments or PM me.I've always suspected vaping was not doing my skin favours. I had bad acne, PIE, and just overall my complexion and skin looked not great. Since I was addicted though, I would write off any concerns.I quit suddenly, fed up with myself. First few days I didn't see any major improvements, aside from my actives looking less inflamed. Then on the fourth night after quitting, all of the CCs around my chin just went away. Now, almost having quit a week ago, I've stopped getting nodule acne. I've only gotten one new pimple, and it's tiny. Plus, the dark circles under my eyes are almost gone now, and lines I've had on my forehead since I was 18 (I'm 22 now) went away too.Seriously, if I can quit, so can you!! I was vaping non-stop for years. It's 100000000% worth it.

[Review] Budget Hyaluronic Acid Comparison - TO, TJ's, and Hada Labo

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey everyone! I did a lot of research here on SCA as I started my skincare journey and spent a lot of time searching for a good comparison between budget HA serums, but didn't find what I was looking for. So I tried some of them myself and wanted to share what I found!Of course, YMMV, so please add your own experiences with these products if you've tried them! For reference, I'm 23F with combo skin, VERY dehydrated, slightly sensitive and prone to mild acne. I live in the Pacific Northwest and am comparing serums during the dry season. I'm budget conscious, and these are the 3 most affordable and accessible (to me!) HA serums I found! The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5Price - $6.80 / 30mlHA Concentration: 2%Texture - Thick, dries mattePros: This is the first HA serum I ever tried, and it's still my favorite. It's the thickest texture and I can use less of it to yield even better results than either Hada Labo or TJ's. The scent is very mild and inoffensive.Cons: It's very sticky and pills if used too heavily or if you don't wait long enough between product layers. It's the least cosmetically elegant formula of the 3, but I found it didn't matter too much to me. The dropper bottle is annoying when you get down to the last of the product, since it's thick and it's very hard to get the last bits out. I also don't like having to order it online and pay shipping or meet the order minimum. Biggest con is whatever's going on with Deciem right now - I'm not into supporting the brand on its current cringe-worthy trajectory.Trader Joe's - Hyaluronic Moisture Boost SerumPrice - $ 8.99 / 30mlHA Concentration: 1%Texture - average thickness, smoothPros: This serum is the perfect consistency for spreading and patting into damp skin. It sinks in beautifully and feels quite plumping. I can buy it in-store while I'm getting my groceries.Cons: While elegant, it feels less effective. It doesn't contain the B5 or extra 1% of HA that TO's does. It's a bit more expensive per ounce for a less sophisticated formulation.Hada Labo - Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Lotion MoistPrice - $10.00 / 170mlHA Concentration: unknown?Texture - Thin and watery, gives a slight dewy sheenPros: For the amount of product you get (and the shipping deals you find,) this is the least expensive product per ounce. It's very cosmetically elegant, fluid, and easy to layer without pilling. I find it leaves my skin with a very slight hydrated sheen after applying. It makes a great base under other products.Cons: I haven't been able to find the actual HA % anywhere in english. It feels more effective than TJ's, but less effective than TO's serum. The scent is the strongest of the three - a bit rubbery and off-putting. Because I have to use more of it per application to yield the same results, the lower price per ounce may not actually be a better deal. Getting it imported to the US can also be a pain and shipping times aren't necessarily consistent. Conclusion: TO's formula wins for me, but the brand doesn't. I'll stick with Hada Labo for now and deal with the shipping (but will pick up a more convenient bottle from TJ's if I'm in a pinch!)

[MISC] Is there evidence on whether using anti aging products affects young skin negatively?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I work as an esthetician, just graduated this year so I’m new to the field. My coworker told me since I’m only 18, I should not be using anti aging products. For instance, she claims using products with collagen in them will interfere with the skin’s natural cycle of collagen production. How does that work? Somehow that doesn’t sound right to me, but what is the real evidence proving this?

[PSA] Remember to stay hydrated! No, seriously.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have a regular morning/evening routine that I'm strict about however I'm fairly bad for not always drinking enough water. I went on a quick vacation several weeks ago and got back into regularly sipping bottles of the stuff so lately my skin has looked amazing. It's plump, smooth and even my pores look better. I was going over what I've been doing different besides not eating junk food and realised I've been drinking a ton of water again. My skin type is ultra sensitive, mostly dry and I use both moisturizer + sun screen daily in addition to water cleansing and toning water. Not saying that water is the ultimate cure-all but it does make a noticeable difference, one that I forgot about.

[PSA] Curology counts against an FSA/HSA!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Contact your Curology provider and ask for a prescription and your 'year to date' invoice so you can submit it to your FSA provider for reimbursement from your account.FSA - An account you can put pre-taxed money into to pay for medical or medical-related expenses through the year. You lose what you don't spend (most plan allow $500 to move over and/or provide a 3-month grace period into the next month). There is a cap on what can be put into this account, $2,650 for 2018 I believe. You elect to have a dollar amount put into the FSA account every check. As medical expenses happen, most of the time the charges go through insurance and your FSA issues you a check for the amount you had to paid at these events. Some expenses you have to put in your own expense reports for. Curology is often forgotten because the dermatologist side of it is free so insurance isn't involved. Also, you can get dressings covered. So if you use the DuoDerm Hydrocolloid dressings from Amazon, most FSAs will count them as a medical expense.

Starting Over... What Made the Biggest Impact On Your Skin? [Routine Help]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi there! I recently turned 29 and for the past two years, I've been a skincare fiend. However, I also just recently graduated with my doctorate degree, which means $$ has been TIGHT. I've done the best I could with the budget I had, but now that I have graduated and have a little more income, I would like to revamp my skincare routine. A little about me:Combination skin, predominantly oily t-zone/chin, dry cheeks; breakouts along my jawline and forehead just above my nose-large pores on my t-zone (nose, forehead, chin); I used to have quite a few comedones on the face, but washing with the salicylic acid has helped reduce them, and the number of breakouts, exponentially (but also dries my face out)-lots of freckles, but unsure of what is freckles or hyperpigmentation/scarring from teenage acnelive in a mainly humid environment about 8 months out of the yearrecently began getting milia around my eye area... what the heck??very facially expressive and started noticing fine lines on my forehead, but not sure I'm ready to consider Botox yet!

Was looking for a good moisturizing body wash for a guy and ran across Love, Beauty, and Planet Body Wash: Shea Butter and Sandalwood. I'm sure the scent is actually unisex but it smells great and it is so moisturizing! It almost feels like moisturizer when you are washing with it but it does foam up nicely, too. It also seems to have good ingredients with no sulfates.Found it at CVS for around $8 which for some may be pricey but I think it's worth it. Can't wait to see how it fares during the winter as I get so dry and itchy at that time.

[Product Question] Does spiro cause an initial purge?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello everyone! A week ago, I started taking spironolactone at a test dosage (25mg) to make sure it doesn’t cause issues with my blood pressure. Since then, I have woken up with 1-3 new white heads or cysts. They’re super painful and causing me issues sleeping if I lay on them. I’m getting pretty disheartened by it because I also just started a new job. Does spiro cause an initial purge, or has my face just decided to go absolutely insane? I found pretty conflicting anecdotes on the internet. At this point, just knowing it happened to someone else but it got better would probably make me feel better.I also stopped most of my routine because I don’t fully know if any of it was breaking me out or not. Current routine:AMWash with CetaphilCetaphil LotionPMWash with CetaphilRed Stridex PadCetaphil LotionI kept using these because I know at some point I had clear skin while using these. [Personal] I can't deal with my skin anymore. Everyday is an actual struggle.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Basically my skin sucks. Just horrible skin all around. Some people have good genetics and clear, smooth, glowy skin. But nope, I have oil all over my face, acne and red spots everywhere, and KP all over my arms. Running my fingers over my arms I feel so many little bumps. I haven't worn a short sleeve t-shirt in years. My skin just pisses me off so much, especially when one spot clears, another place gets acne. And not to mention my skin thinks all my bumps, even the smallest one need to be super red and noticeable. Looking at my face, it looks so gross. Cheeks have pimples, closed comedones, atrophic scarring. And earlier today I was looking in the mirror and felt pretty ok about my skin. Besides the cyst on my neck and the inflammatory pimple on my upper cheek, my skin was looking pretty good. But I get home and my nose hurts a lot, and I look in the mirror and a huge red mark is on my nose and I can feel a big bump underneath, and the pimple on my cheek is even more red and aggitated. New pimple popped up on my cheeks aswell. Literally within 8 hours my skin develops new pimples out of nowhere. So how do I deal with my crap skin when I do everything I need to do for it. And I know people think that I might need to change my diet, wash my pillow cases, have good routine in place, don't touch my face, but I do all that stuff. Still get acne, can't afford accutane. So I sit here writing this post, with a cyst on my neck and a huge painful pimple on my nose that hurts when I move my nose or squint. I work everyday and even some weekends, and I interact with people at my job and at home all the time. I hate my skin, I hate that a dermatologist hasn't been able to help, I hate that health care in the U.S. sucks and I can't get my hormones tested or get on accutane without having some huge bills.

[Miscellaneous] Has anyone ever experienced that less is more for your face?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I got tired the other night and only cleansed and moisturized instead of doing the whole shebang of my routine and I was pleasantly surprised when I woke up without any pimples and my red marks from active acne had dimmed somewhat. I did the same the next two nights: just cleansing and moisturizing, skipping the stridex pads, the Sunday Riley good genes, the niacinamide, and the hyaluronic acid. Overall, my skin was glowing!! I did notice my pores were a bit clogged since I hadn’t exfoliated as I do every night but no more active pimples emerged and my skin felt fresh. Has anyone else experienced this before? What do you feel is the right amount of products for your skin?

I started having acne about a year ago, nothing too severe but still a serious blow to my self confidence. One day, I discovered this sub, but seeing as I don’t live in the US I couldn’t really get my hands on CeraVe and all of that, so I just bought what was available on ASOS (they have a skin care section, quite nice actually, they sell a lot of The Ordinary’s products) without too much research. It didn’t help at all, but it got me addicted to trying products, because it felt like I was actively combating this problem, and not just being a helpless victim. It gave me hope.About two months ago though, as I was going to the pharmacy, I noticed they were selling some CeraVe products! I immediately bought them, tried them on, and since then everything has gone better in my life. The CeraVe cleanser and moisturizer helped, but they made me look for a chemical exfoliant, and led to me importing Stridex pads from the US. OH MY GOD THESE ARE A GODSEND. I use them every night, leave them on for 20 minutes, then moisturize. They have gotten rid of almost all of my acne, but I feel like they have also gotten rid of all of the problems in my life!!I have a girlfriend now, lots of nice friends I can really trust, I just feel really good in my own skin! I’m just really happy now, and I wanted to thank you guys for that. You’ve given me hope, tips, but more importantly something to fight for, and the weapons to fight with.Thank you guys for making my life a good one.

[Routine Help] Is Mandelic Acid + BHA compatible with Niacinamide?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I tried to look into the subject, but I only found different opinions on this. Can I use them at the same time, or should I use the peel at night, and the serum at mornings?I don't peel every day.I use the Geek & Gorgeous Cheer Up Mandelic acid 6% + BHA 2% and The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% with Zinc.It would be awesome if you could help!

[skin concerns] how to lighten underarms and dealing with ingrown hairs

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've read some posts about how to lighten dark underarms and saw that people were recommending stridex (red box). I was wondering if there are other products and methods that have worked for people.I have always had dark underarms since I was young, I think it's because I started shaving my underarms at a young age. I've switched to waxing recently and have been using an all natural deodorant instead (Schimdts). I've tried using the kojie san soap but didn't really see much different. I've also tried the lemon juice and baking soda mixture but have had trouble keeping up with the routine. As for the ingrown hairs, they keep appearing in the same spots. There's usually a bump that they grow under. I always use a loofa to exfoliate my underarms. I usually pick at the bump when I see the hair and proceed to remove it, which probably isn't the best method.Any advice would be extremely helpful. Also a little about me: 20F asianhere are picture of my underarms picture 1 picture 2 T_T so embarrasing, I did not realize how bad they were until I took a picture of them

I'm mostly excited about the CeraVe moisturizing cream (same one as the tub I assume...?) and the LRP sunscreen. Didn't even know eucerin made a sunscreen, so there's that (a lot of it). I haven't done a full inventory yet so I'll have to do that after work.....At least I don't have to go to the drugstore to buy some of this stuff now!

[Hair Removal] Redness and whteheads only where beard grows?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey SCA, hopefully you can help me out. I'll try to make it short and simple and you can ask me for more information if you need to.I just shaved my short beard (safety razor) yesterday without too much irritaion and made sure to shave with the grain, light pressure, etc. Here's my issue, I get these whiteheads that come and go even if I grow my beard out or shave. When my skin isn't in remission, the whiteheads mainly form under my mouth on my soul patch area, on my chin and under my chin in the upper part of the neckI also get some where the rest of my beard area. It is the strangest thing. My skin under my moustache is fine and the rest of my T zone is fine, but oily.I have been prescribed Finacea which I have used for over a month and I am not sure how well it is working. I just ran out yesterday and need to go back to see a dermatologist before I can get a refill. In the morning I will sometimes use a treatment if I think I need it, but sometimes I will just rinse with warm and cold water. Then apply Finacea, let it dry and moisturize. Then apply sunscreen. I have been using the Elta Md uv sport for about a month and it seems to work well with my skin so far except it will make me a bit oily.I also cycle between Ketaconazole shampoo, sulfur/salasylic acid wash, and zinc pyrithione for dry flaky skin in the same areas. I wash my face after work with Cerave wash for getting sunscreen off and then apply one of those treatments for about five minutes before rinsing them off and applying finacea and letting it dry. Then either Vanicream or Cerave daily moisturizer last.I am sorry if this is unorganized and confusing but I am embarrassed with all these whiteheads that keep forming in the same spots. Also I sweat quite a bit while I am at work because it is hot this time of year.

[Acne] Thank you all! My skin is amazing now! So, what should I do to fix the last little bits.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey all,First, I want to thank all you wonderful people for helping me. I came absolutely fed up and defeated about my skin and you guys were so supportive and helpful. I've struggled with acne my whole live. Not so much cystic, but just clogged pores and tons of bumps and whiteheads. Red flaky skin, but also an impossible oil slick. I couldn't even wear make up because it just slid off my face. I was tortured in school for years about it. Somedays, I didn't want to leave the house. In my 20's it calmed down, but I still struggled with hormonal outbreaks and flaking skin. My skin is super sensitive, so EVERYTHING made if break out. I got so tired of waking up to new whiteheads and bumps and CC's and then cystic ones started popping up. A month before I turned 30, I was like "THAT'S IT. I'M DOING WHATEVER IT TAKES." When venting to a friend, thy directed me here and everything changed.I realized my moisture barrier has been fucked for YEARS and everything I was doing was the worst for it. Even though your advice sounded so counterintuitive, I saw the success stories here and decided to trust you guys. I dropped all my actives, stopped exfoliating, researched a ton of products you recommended and started with the routine I'll post below. Within a week, people were complimenting my skin. It was GLOWING. My pores were cleaning out. My redness began to fade. My break outs on my chin, cheeks and jaw were barely noticeable by the second week. No more flaking and now I have that natural dewy look that I was convinced would never be me. Sunday was my 30th birthday and I woke up and cried when I saw my skin, but this time from joy! THANK YOU ALL FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!It's been 5 weeks and I feel like I'm ready to slowly introduce an active to help with some of the little whiteheads and CC's I still get. I had another hormonal break out along my chin and jaw again and it's just starting to feel clogged. My moisture barrier seems mostly, maybe entirely repaired, so I'd like to very slowly introduce some gentle exfoliating or actives. (Sorry no pics, I'm at work lol) Here's my routine:AM: Micellar water wipe, hop in the shower, rinse > Klairs Supple Toner > Hada Labo Premium > TO Niacinamide > TO Caffeine solution for my eyes > CeraVe AM moisturizer w/ SPF 30 > NYX concealer (in the pot)PM: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser (in shower) > Klairs Supple Toner > Hada Labo > alternate nights between TO's Squalene and Benton Snail High Steam ContentSo I'm debating between introducing Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid or switching to the CeraVe SA Renewing Cleanser (https://www.ulta.com/renewing-sa-cleanser-normal-skin?productId=xlsImpprod13531041) and seeing how that goes.If I go with Paula's Choice, I would switch to the CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Cleanser (https://www.ulta.com/hydrating-face-cleanser-face-wash-normal-dry-skin?productId=xlsImpprod4190255)You guys haven't steered me wrong yet, so I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you all so much!PS- IT'S DEFINETELY NOT FUNGAL. I know people love to recommend that, but I ruled that out already. Just wanna put that out there haha.

[Misc] Sorry... Please help

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Throwaway for obvious reasons.I don't know where else to go with this. I've asked on so many different forums and have gotten no response. The skin in your mouth is still technically skin right...? Maybe you guys can inform me on some topical treatment that might help.My situation is this. I engaged in oral sex with a man I met on tinder. I was on the giving end. This is the only thing I can think of that may have caused this. After the sex he blocked me and I have no way to contact him now.A few months later my mouth is now full of scabs and sores and pus. If I push on the sores things that look like tiny greenish yellow rocks come out of my gums. The holes where the rocks are pushed out aren't healing, so my gums are just full of small holes that feel infected. The roof of my mouth is almost completely raw feeling and the top of my tongue looks like it's rotting. I can seriously just slough off the top layer of my tongue about twice a day. My entire mouth smells. I don't know what to do. I haven't been to the doctor because I don't have the money. I also can't even fathom letting someone see this. I don't think anyone around my has noticed. I don't live with anyone and when I go to work I just sit at my desk and talk to no one. If someone tries to speak to me I'll just write on a piece of paper that I lost my voice and can't talk. Eating is so painful and disgusting. I'm constantly choking on pus and fluid. This isn't a troll. I'm terrified and can't get any medical care. I'm so desperate for a solution please somebody just tell me you have some sort of topical that will work. please help :(

[Acne] why is Differin doing the opposite of what it’s meant to do? (More comedones)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’m starting week 5 of Differin OTC and I just feel crushed—out of nowhere my cheeks are getting bumpy and congested. From under 10 comedones to 50 or more. During the last 6 months my hundreds of closed comedones slowly disappeared without much effort on my part except for benzoyl peroxide wash, occasional Stridex and MUAC mandelic peels. since my routine was working I didn’t change it. I added the Differin to tackle the biggest CCs I get in the apples of my cheeks (they scar horribly) and to maintain the smooth texture I achieved in the rest of my face, but now I’m getting comedones again on my jaw?!? This is what my skin looks like as of today http://imgur.com/JO2BeTqI started with Differin 2 nights for a week, then 3 nights/week, then 5 nights/week to everyday. I didn’t experience any irritation or dryness but I’ve scaled back to every other day just in case. I’ve made no lifestyle/detergent/diet changes and my routine has been the same for the past 6 months:AM5% benzoyl peroxide washRinse face after 5-10 minutesApply Avene Tolerance Extreme Emulsion to damp skinBiore UV Watery Essence if I’m going outPMBioderma sensibio micellar water (if I’m wearing sunscreen/makeup)Cetaphil gentle cleanser (I introduced this over two months ago and it didn’t give me problems, I used to use the Cerave hydrating)Avene tolerance extreme emulsion on damp skinDifferin 0.1%Vaseline on my lidsI’m trying to narrow down why this might be happening and so far I’ve got:it’s the Cetaphil cleanserDifferin just Does Weird Stuff™️ to your face until suddenly 3 months later it makes you look like a porcelain statueIt’s fungal (please god no not again)My skin is just irritated from the Differin; I have noticed some raised red patches under my eyes/under my lips (I don’t apply Differin there)These are just microcomedones that weren’t visible to me and the Differin has brought them to the surface (I couldn’t find sources for this anywhere)I expected a purge. I really did—I looked at all the comedones on my face (around 10) and braced myself for 10+ breakouts. What I didn’t expect was more comedones. I know I’m only in week 5 but it is so so so disheartening. WTF is going on?! Has anyone else had a similar experience? Did it help to stick it out with the Differin/retinoid?This was the only picture I could find of my skin before differin (barely any comedones compared to now)http://imgur.com/B31VEEO

[Routine Help][Anti-Aging] is this aging or dehydration?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Long time lurker. Ya'll have really helped me build a routine.I have started to notice fine lines on my forehead. I'm not sure how long they've been there but I only really started to be bothered by them this summer. They are where my skin naturally gathers when I raise my eyebrows but stay even when my eyebrows are down. If I really inspect my face I guess I have other very fine lines but nothing that seem bothersome.Early 30s; have been pretty good about sun protection after 1 very bad full-body burn as a teenager. Tend to have a "very expressive", active face/forehead and tension headaches from tension in face muscles. Is this normal aging and I should just either accept it or get Botox? Is this dehydration from AC and dehumidifiers all summer? Or could it be over-exfoliation (maybe I need to step down the retinoid %)?If it's dehydration, is it because I'm using so many oil-based things and not toning to get water-based products down to the skin? Should I add another step/product to make sure moisture is getting in there?I've been doing oil-only cleansing for almost 2 years now and it has cleared up pretty much all my deep, painful hormonal acne and closed comedones. Before switching to this oil-only routine I was double-cleansing with jojoba oil and Avene Eau Thermale Clean-Ac Cleansing Cream or using micellar water, and then toning with Thayer's. I'm a little bit afraid of cleansers and toners now, and avoid all detergents/surfactants, fatty alcohols, silicones, limonene and other citrus-derived products, and glycerin. I don't know for sure what was causing those deep, painful blemishes but I haven't been eager to find out.Routine:AM:water onlypomegranate or raspberry seed oil if feeling dryTO natural moisturizing factorsLa Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra SPF 50+ European version or ThinkBaby SPF 50no makeupPM:blend of sunflower, hemp, and jojoba oil cleansing with fingers and damp washcloth; no emulsifier or second wash1-2X/week TO 2% retinoid in squalene, 3X/week TO 12% Ascorbyl glucosiderosehip or pomegranate seed oilTO natural moisturizing factors

[Routine Help] Facial abrasions - what products to use?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi all,Last night I got into a scooter accident and ended up with abrasions all over the right side of my face and neck. The ER sent me home with an antibiotic ointment and instructions to clean and reapply 3x a day, using a very very gentle cleanser and warm water.I was wondering if anyone had any product suggestions for this - I normally do the OCM with almond oil but i’m afraid of how that might affect my cuts. I would also appreciate any info on what to use after everything has scabbed up/healed over to prevent any scarring/hyperpigmentation issues. The ER doctor did warn me that I may need microdermabrasion in a year or two if all the dirt ground into my skin doesn’t come out (they spent a few hours cleaning but not everything would come out)Thank you for any recommendations :)NSFW pic:https://imgur.com/a/WLzBzMV

[Review] Neutrogena death match: comparison of Ultra Sheer Dry Touch, Hydro Boost Gel, and Ultra Sheer Liquid

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My skin type: Dry in the winter, oily in the summer. Right now my skin is a bit oily. Normally not sensitive, although I do have some minor irritation from a recent product introduction. What I look for in a sunscreen: Lightweight, doesn’t pill over moisturizer, with a satin or matte finish (or at least a sunscreen that holds up to mattifying powder and blotting sheets.)ROUND 1: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 55yep, that's some packaging right there.Price: $10.99 for 3oz on Neutrogena.comAvailable at Target for $7.29Ingredients: Active ingredients - Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 10%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 2.8%, Oxybenzone 6%Inactive Ingredients - Water, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Styrene/acrylates Copolymer, Silica, Diethylhexyl 2,6- Naphthalate, Vp/hexadecane Copolymer, Dimethicone, Caprylyl Methicone, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Peg-100 Stearate, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Methylparaben, Behenyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Iodopropynyl ButylcarbamateSpecial Info: Water resistant (80 minutes), broad spectrumPerformance: This is a very, very thick cream that’s a bit difficult to spread out. It has a nice satin finish but it does have a white cast. It smells like generic sunscreen.big blopthickkit almost looks normal!Idk. This one didn’t really live up to the hype.Applied over moisturizer, this bad boy pills like there’s no tomorrow. Heavy creams, thin lotions, doesn’t matter - Dry Touch won’t play nice. That doesn’t mean much to me in the summer, but it would be practically unusable for me in the winter, and I suspect it’ll be unusable for many people with dry skin who prefer to layer moisturizers under non-moisturizing sunscreens. It doesn’t do too well on its own, either. Occasionally I’ll apply too much at a time and it’ll all clump up into one gross sunscreen snowball, but it tends to do that even when I’m using an excess of caution. It’s...weird. If too much is applied, any facial movement or rubbing will cause the sunscreen to sort of clump up, lift up, and flake off. It definitely has a snake-shedding-its-skin vibe and it ain’t pretty. It’s impossible to rub in any areas that have too much after it has dried a bit, and even smiling causes gross white flakes to appear.yeah, not a fan.I will say that this has less shine than any of the other drugstore sunscreens I’ve tried. It’s not fully matte, but it has a beautiful finish that might not require blotting or setting depending on your ideal Dew Level. But beware if you plan on using a blotting sheet - if you apply anything more than a thin layer of this sunscreen or if you make the mistake of moving your face, you’ll end up witha really freakin gross blotting sheet. (comaprison to CeraVe Ultra Light on the left)Cosmetically elegant shine level? Hell Yes.Cosmetically elegant anything else? Hard no. It has all the appeal of dried toothpaste. There’s also a white cast? I’ve never seen this mentioned in any review, so maybe my eyes deceive me, but...there’s definitely a white cast.On a positive note, this sunscreen does feel very lightweight, not heavy or greasy. So that’s good!Like the other Neutrogena sunscreens in this review, (spoiler) this one stung. My skin is a bit irritated right now so I expect the irritation to stop once my skin is in better shape, but for right now it’s not a particularly enjoyable experience. This one was 6.5/10 bees.On paper it has all the right things going for it: not shiny, not heavy, dries down fast, yadda yadda. But in practice it’s like herding cats, and that’s way more effort than I want to put into a sunscreen. Even when I’m being very careful with application I end up with sunscreen flakes along my jawline, and the nice satin finish just isn’t worth it to me.Pros:LightweightSatin finishCons:Pills over moisturizer, bunches up if too much sunscreen is used, bunches up under powder, lifts up with blotting sheetsStrong generic sunscreen scentWhite castProbably not suitable for sensitive skinGuys, did I get the wrong Ultra Sheer Dry Touch? Is there a body version and a face version? Because I feel like my experience is so far removed from all the other reviews I’ve read - this is one of the most difficult sunscreens I’ve used!Rating: 1.5/5ROUND 2: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion SPF 50so blue.Price: $12.49 for 3oz on Neutrogena.comAvailable at Target for $11.49Ingredients: Active ingredients - Avobenzone (2.7%), Homosalate (9%), Octisalate (5%), Octocrylene (9%), Oxybenzone (4.5%)Inactive Ingredients - Water, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Caprylyl Methicone, Diisopropyl Adipate, Silica, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Dimethicone, Polyurethane-62, Phenoxyethanol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Pentylene Glycol, Aluminum Starch Cctenylsuccinate, Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/vp Crosspolymer, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Fragrance,Chlorphenesin, Menthyl Lactate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Disodium Edta, Trideceth-6, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Violet 2, Blue 1Special Info: water resistant (80 minutes), broad spectrum, oil-freePerformance: This is a thin gel lotion that spreads out easily with no white cast. It’s fragranced and smells quite fresh and clean. It’s also kinda blue!blopsuper cool consistencyafter drydownAfter fighting with the Ultra Sheer Dry Touch, this one is a dream to use! It’s super thin and easy to spread out, and it never feels heavy or greasy. I haven’t tried anything else from Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost line, but this one is a beautiful watery gel lotion, and it warms up on the skin almost like a serum. Easy to spread, easy to layer. The one downside is that it’s so thin that the cap gets goopy quite quickly:grossIt layers well over moisturizer, it never bunches up if I apply a lot, and applying additional layers of sunscreen never causes pilling. It’s simply easy to use, as a sunscreen should be. It’s light enough to be suitable for oily skin, and it layers well over both thick creams and light lotions so it’ll be fine for dry skin as well. This one is quite shiny the way that the vast majority of sunscreens are shiny. It’s there and it’s annoying. If I give it 20+ minutes to dry down, the Very Shiny look tones down just a bit, but not enough to justify waiting that long. But the Hydro Boost Gel handles both mattifying powders and blotting sheets well - never bunches up, never lifts off the skin. This one ended up stinging, 5/10 bees. It was almost worth it for that awesome fresh scent though. All in all, it was pretty good! It has almost everything I look for in a sunscreen - easy to apply, easy to mattify, smells great - it’s just very shiny. I think this is a great affordable option for those who want an easy to use sunscreen that doesn’t come in a tiny 1oz bottle.Pros:LightweightEasy to applyThin consistencyDoesn’t pill over moisturizer or if you apply a lot of sunscreenHandles powder and blotting sheets wellSmells quite nice and the light blue color is funCons:ShinyPackaging gets gross quicklyProbably not suitable for sensitive skinRating: 3/5ROUND 3: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 70smol bottlePrice: $12.99 for 1.4oz on Neutrogena.comAvailable at Target for $8.79Ingredients: Active ingredients - Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 10%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 7.5%, Oxybenzone 5%Inactive ingredients - Water, Silica, Cetyl Dimethicone, Styrene/acrylates Copolymer, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Steareth-100, Phenoxyethanol, Pentylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Steareth-2, Cyclopentasiloxane, Polyester-7, Chlorphenesin, Disodium Edta, Bisabolol, Acrylates/dimethicone Copolymer, Fragrance, Butylene Glycol, Diethylhexyl 2,6-naphthalate, Bht, Mannan, Xantham Gum, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Ascorbic Acid, Pantothenic Acid, Retinyl PalmitateSpecial Info: water resistant (80 minutes), broad spectrum, oil-freePerformance: This sunscreen is an incredibly thin, runny lotion that’s easy to apply with no obvious white cast. It does have that generic sunscreen scent, but it’s not as in your face as the Ultra Sheer Dry Touch. And while it does have that typical sunscreen shine, it handles blotting sheets and powder well.a blopsuper liquidyafter drydownThe bottle is quite small and would be easy to bring around with you, although I will say it looks like a sunscreen for ants. It has a nice thin applicator tip so that the super runny lotion doesn’t all spill out, and it’s easy to squeeze out just the amount you need. It’s also got this neat spraypaint vibe with one of those lil metal balls making a hell of a racket in there.applicator tipIt’s insanely lightweight and feels totally comfortable on oily & sweaty skin. It doesn’t have that mask-like feeling some water resistant sunscreens can have - I actually had to double check that it is in fact water resistant (it is!) I probably wouldn’t take this to the beach, but it’s a fantastic choice for general day-to-day hot weather living. It’s definitely the lightest of the bunch, and the lightest sunscreen that I’ve tried so far. This wouldn’t be a good choice on its own for dry skin, but it layers very well over moisturizer. It’s easy to spread around without disturbing thicker cream layers underneath, which I’ll definitely appreciate in the winter when my AM routine has a couple moisturizers thrown in there. There’s no pilling and no bunching up, and I can apply additional sunscreen layers with no issue.blotting sheet comparisonThis one is a bit shiny on oily skin, although it’s toned down from the Hydro Boost sheen. But it has a satin-matte finish on freshly cleansed, dry skin - I find that I don’t need to use blotting sheets at all with this one on certain days. This one is definitely the most cosmetically elegant of the bunch - while Hydro Boost and Dry Touch remain Very Shiny on both oily and dry skin, this one seems like it really wants to be matte even on oily skin. (It doesn’t really get matte, but it’s the thought that counts, right?)The only issue is that it currently weighs in at 4/10 bees. Stings the least of the bunch, but it’s still irritating enough to prevent me from using it consistently. I’ll be super glad to return to this sunscreen once my skin calms down a bit though!Pros:Very LightweightVery thin consistencyEasy to applySatin finish on dry skinDoesn’t pill, doesn’t bunch up under powder, doesn’t lift up with blotting sheetsFeels like you’re shakin a spraypaint canCons:Lil tiny ant bottleShiny on oily skinProbably not suitable for sensitive skinRating: 4/5Winner?Of course it’s the most expensive of the bunch. The Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid has everything I’m looking for - lightweight, easy to apply, layers well over itself and moisturizer, satin finish that’s trying so damn hard to be matte. It’s super comfortable to wear on oily skin despite a bit of shine, and on dry skin it pretty much has the perfect sunscreen finish. It’s really, really nice. That said, the Hydro Boost is a fantastic runner up for those who are looking for a more affordable option - it’s just a tad heavier than the Ultra Sheer and while it’s noticeably shinier than the Liquid on dry skin, it has a pretty similar shine level on oily skin. It layers well over itself and moisturizer, and you can mattify it with no problem. Plus is smells really really freakin good!Just, y’know, avoid the Dry Touch.

[PSA] - Neutrogena has a new Hydro Boost line for the body (moisturizers are 16oz!)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Was just looking through CVS and saw a Hydro Boost moisturizer for the body. Went to their website and they have a line targeted for the body. Looks like one version of the moisturizing gel cream is fragrance free and the other is not, just like their face moisturizers. They also have a balm and hand cream.I'll definitely be trying the flagrance free version and it's 16oz, so a way better value!Link: https://www.neutrogena.com/skin/skin-bath

[Personal] Sustainable SkinCare or, what on Earth do I do with all the empty bottles?!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi! I've been... having some pressing issues concerning my skincare routine carbon footprint. I love buying and trying new things, but my problem lies in how much plastic waste I'm generating every time I buy a product and throw out the packaging. I know you can reuse the bottles and whatnot but I ask you, how do YOU work around the disposal element of the skincare packaging and if not, what would you like to see in next generation packaging. Also, the AM moisturizing lotion of CeraVe with 30SPF, is it good?

[Skin Concern] Fastest way to get rid of suction mark?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I don’t know if this is the right sub but whatever. Today while waiting for something to cook in the microwave I stuck a cup on my mouth and held it on like a suction cup. When I took it off about 5 minutes later there was a huge redish-purplish mark surrounding my lips. It looks like I have a red flesh beard. What is the fastest possible way to get rid of this? I put ice on it for around 30 minutes and then occasionally scraped my skin with a coin and that worked a little. The purple disappeared and also the little red dots. Now it’s just red. I have picture day at my school on Tuesday and I need to have this gone by then. What should I do?

A thank you to this one person's experience with fungal acne [Personal]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Sorry for the long post, this was such a revelation.A little over a month ago, I was casually scrolling through reddit and this one person's post on the SCA stood out. Fungal acne? What's that? Read through the post, then Googled it. Turns out it's something I've been dealing with for such a long time.It got to the point that I was embarrassed if my boyfriend saw me without make up, and I was ready to make a dermatologist appointment. I had all these Korean products I was using too. They felt great but none of them made the damn bumps go away. My face constantly itched too and made my break outs worse. I stopped using the Korean products and went to a basic facial cleaner (Clean & Clear). It kind helped with basic acne but not the tiny ones on the forehead. I even stopped putting on foundation and concealer to see if it'd help. Then I switched to the SkinActive Rose Facial Cleaner by Garnier because maybe I just had really sensitive skin, especially since it felt like everything else made me break out in some areas. It helped more than the first cleanser. Then I stumbled on that post and looked up products to use on my face. I settled on the Head & Shoulders Tea Tree shampoo. A week in, I didn't see much results but stuck with it. I used it twice a day along with the rose cleanser.A little over a month later, and my skin is almost 100% cleared up! I'm now only using the shampoo at night with the rose cleanser, and I'll use the rose cleanser in the morning after waking up. Sometimes I'll use a green tea facial moisturizer on my cheeks if they're feeling extra dry, but that's it. As far as make-up, I'm not even using foundation or anything (save for eye make-up).Now I'm sitting here wondering if and when I don't need the shampoo treatment after some time, but right now it's doing what I want it to do and that's what counts. So again, thanks to that one post. I don't remember who posted it, but it was life-changing. Also, thanks to those who continue to post about it. It's really annoying to deal with fungal acne, but I'm glad there are solutions out there to help with it. I wish I had taken before and after pics, but I hated taking pics where you could see my forehead.Do I need to post a routine?Morning: Wash face with SkinActive Rose Facial Cleanser Apply sunscreen if needed (Neutrogena)Evening: Wash with SkinActive Rose Facial Cleanser Wash with Head & Shoulders Tea Tree shampoo Apply Whamisa by Glow Studio Green Tea Moisturizer if needed

[PSA] Sephora is shipping old B-Hydra

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So just a heads up for anyone who ordered the new reformulated Drunk Elephant B-Hydra serum from Sephora. They are shipping out the old “gel” formula and I’m not sure if it’s a mistake or they’re trying to clear out old inventory in a shady way.The website clearly shows the new product with the “serum” title. I placed my order Friday morning and received the old product with the “gel” packaging today.I’m taking mine into a Sephora store for an exchange and calling Sephora customer service, as well as dropping a line to Drunk Elephant that they need to recall or halt their old products.Just figured I’d warn people who are planning to take advantage of the VIB sale this week.

[Research] Science Sundays: Microbiology & Immunology of the Skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
MicrobiologyThe microflora of human skin is diverse and full of interesting microbes, but I’m only going to hit on the few that I felt like were most relevant here. Please feel free to let me know if you would like to know about others!StaphylococciTwo species of Staphylococci are of particular interest when it comes to human skin: Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococci thrive in areas with extra moisture and are found in the highest density near sweat glands (1).S. aureusWhile it has a (warranted) formidable reputation, 20% of the population permanently carries S. aureus without any negative effects, and it may even give them an advantage: a relationship between S. aureus carriers and decreased likelihood of complications from infection after the skin barrier has been breached (2).S. epidermidisS. epidermidis is a friendly, or commensal, bacterium that is always found on skin. It can’t cause any harm unless the host individual becomes immunocompromised or wounded. S. epidermidis actually produces a group of pheromones known as agr (accessory gene regulator) pheromones, which decrease the virulence potential of S. aureus. Pheromones are chemical messengers released into the environment by an organism to communicate with other organisms around them. The agr pheromones from S. epidermidis have a primary purpose of telling other S. epidermidis bacteria to produce their agr pheromones, but show a second function by silencing the virulence genes of S. aureus bacteria in the area (1).Propionibacterium acnesNow for the infamous Propionibacterium acnes. P. acnes can comprise anywhere from 20-70% of the permanent community found on human skin. Sebum serves as a plentiful food source for this bacterium, so it is commonly found on sebaceous regions of the skin and inside of the hair follicle. P. acnes produces lipases (fat-digesting enzymes) that break down sebum into free fatty acids, which serve as its food source but also seem to invoke inflammation in the skin surrounding areas in which this reaction occurs. P. acnes colonization does not necessarily equate to acne, however; the species has recently been categorized into five biotypes that all vary greatly in their acnegenic potential. Depended upon presence and abundance of the biotypes, the host may have completely healthy skin or severe acne. Type P. acnes B3 has been found to predominate in bacterial isolates taken from individuals with severe acne (3). It has been proposed that the name of P. acnes be changed to Cutibacterium acnes (4), and many have already changed to this classification, but some haven’t and disagree with it’s name being changed (5); microbiology is ever-changing as advances in technology allow closer looks at the genomes and phenotypes of microbes, so I wanted to include this after u/punctum pointed it out to me. Many have heard of P. acnes and most textbooks you cross will still use P. acnes, so I’m leaving this subheading as P. acnes for now.MalasseziaFinally, I wanted to discuss a non-bacterial microbial group: fungi of the genus Malassezia. Malassezia species have been associated with numerous skin disorders such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. While the details surrounding its life on the skin are lacking compared to other microbes due to difficulties with culturing them, research into this fungal group has increased over the past 10 years and will continue to expand. It is known that they thrive on the complex lipids found in sebum and that zinc pyrithione is one of the most successful ways to fight is because of its anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory activities (6). Maybe Malassezia and fungi in general can be a future post! Since I’m sure a lot of you were hoping to see a bit about it, though, here’s what I know about fungal acne. The current medical classification of is Malassezia folliculitis, a type of fungal folliculitis, which is a subset of infectious folliculitis (7). In the paper just cited, 264 folliculitis patients were examined to determine the type of folliculitis they had, and 49 of them (18.5%) were diagnosed with Malassezia folliculitis. Malassezia globosa was the most common species found, followed by Malassezia sympodialis, Malassezia restricta, and Malassezia furfur. The closer I looked, the more I found on this topic, and it was just too much to all be in this post, but I’m definitely willing to do an entire post on this if y’all are interested!!ImmunologyThe skin prevents invasion by microbes through physical, chemical, and biological means.Physical DefensesThe layers of dead keratinocytes in the stratum corneum physically block microbial invasion because they cannot readily degrade keratin. As soon as microbes that choose to set up house on these cells secrete adhesion proteins and begin to settle in, the cells are sloughed off and replaced with new ones (8).Chemical DefensesIn addition to acting as a cooling mechanism, our sweat is inherently antimicrobial; lysozyme, an enzyme that is excreted in sweat, cuts through bacterial cell membranes. Other antimicrobial proteins, known as defensins and cathelicidins, are produced by epithelial cells. These also break bacterial cell membranes to fight off invasion. The high salt concentrations on skin also contribute to making it inhospitable to your run-of-the-mill microbial organism. And then, as most of us know around here, the pH of skin is acidic; it falls on the pH scale at about 5-6. This acidity also makes the skin more difficult to use as a habitat for certain microbes(9).Biological DefensesThe commensal microbiota and immune cells make up the skin’s biological defenses. The microbiota outcompetes most pathogens for nutrients and colonization sites; they fight a battle to keep their territory from the other microbes, which has the (pretty sweet) side effect of benefitting the host (8).Immune cells beneath the skin surface attack anything that breaches the physical/chemical barrier. Dendritic Cells, immune cells that snatch up foreign protein particles to snitch on them to our lymphocytes, wait below the surface with spider-like arms that are ready and willing to fight (9). If you’ve made it this far, I applaud you, and here’s a link to a picture of the dendritic cells, they’re really neat: http://www.micronaut.ch/shop/the-dendritic-cell-h-sapiens-adaptive-immune-response/ReferencesChristensen, G. [Misc] What dehydrated skin really entails and how to really fix it. Studies included.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Dehydrated skin is oily, easily irritated, easily reddened, pore-ridden and tight no matter what you do.The first step to avoiding dehydrated skin is to strip your routine of all actives (exfoliants, cleansers etc). The reparation of dehydrated skin seems to be rather misrepresented on this sub so I went down a deep rabbit hole of scientific journals to get to the bottom of it, having myself nuked my "moisture barrier" with excess use of Benzoyl Peroxide and smoking.First of all - dehydrated skin doesn't necessarily mean the skin actually lacks water. Unless your body is malfunctioning in some way not relating to the functions of the lipid matrix, the amount of water transported to your skin barriers should be similar to the average person. Your skin simply can't hold onto the water it already holds. So why do some experience dehydrated skin? Because of heightened Transepidermal Water Loss.Trans-epidermal Water Loss or TEWL, according to Wikipedia, is the following: "the loss of water that passes from inside a body (animal or plant) through the epidermis (that is, either the epidermal layer of animal skin or the epidermal layer of plants)) to the surrounding atmosphere via diffusion and evaporation processes."This means that hydration is not the solution, which also ties in with the study below suggesting that skin's exposure to water may have similar effects to that of irritating surfactants:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/12542533/?i=2&from=/10594737/relatedThe study above, titled Hydration disrupts human stratum corneum ultrastructure:Outtake: "Our confirmation that water disrupts the structure of the SC barrier lipids helps explain the known ability of water to increase skin permeability (Scheuplein, 1978). Similarly, our results strongly support the ability of prolonged water contact to facilitate irritant contact dermatitis (Renshaw, 1947;Suskind and Ishihara, 1965;Possick, 1969;Halkier-Sørensen et al, 1995;Meding, 2000)."This means that watery serums and essences are not the solution here. By locking in hydrating serums with an occlusive, you are effectively feeding your skin water for hours on end which does nothing in aiding the reparation of a damaged skin barrier. And as this article suggests, dehydration is not due to lack of water in the skin, it occurs due to a malfunctioning lipid matrix:http://www.beautymagonline.com/beauty-articles/1000-epidermal-dehydration-2So what is really the issue here and how do we fix it? By feeding the skin skin-identical lipids.Among these are:Ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acides, Squalane, Urea etc with Ceramides being the major lipid constituent:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/12553851/?i=6&from=/10594737/relatedFor more on skin-identical lipids, read this: http://www.justaboutskin.com/lipids-in-skin-care/And a study on "Leveraging the skin's ability to heal itself":https://www.omicsonline.org/open-access/repairing-a-compromised-skin-barrier-in-dermatitis-2155-6121.1000187.php?aid=29958A disrupted skin barrier has many points of vulnerability including excessive water loss, slow/deficient lipid production, an imbalance in content and ratio of skin lipids, a dry skin barrier, an elevation of pH, susceptibility to infection and inflammation, and susceptibility to contact sensitization [16–19]. There have been many approaches to induce and enhance skin barrier repair in chronic dermatitis. Some products have focus on skin barrier protection or physiologic skin lipid replacement or inflammation. To effectively heal the skin barrier, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) must be minimized and the skin must be protected from further contact with irritants, allergens, and infectious organisms [20].The barrier is disrupted, meaning TEWL is through the roof... meaning no matter how much you hydrate your skin, that water will make no difference because it will evaporate off your face anyway. The trick to fixing dehydrated skin is not adding more hydrating products, it is to topically apply skin-identical lipids to your face and sealing them in with an occlusive until the barrier's function is restored to a point where the TEWL is negligible. So to recap this:- Cut out all actives.- Minimize your skin's exposure to water as best you can.- Buy products that contain skin-identical lipids, especially creams heavy on Ceramides. But ingredients like carbamide (Urea), triglyceride (fatty acid) and Squalane should also do the trick. The big problem here, however, is that many creams containing these ingredients are occlusive and I haven't had time to study the external permeability of occlusive ingredients such as Petrolatum.- If the above creams are not occlusive, make sure to seal with Vaseline (and do so anyway before you go to sleep).- Keep applying these every morning and every night until you have restored the functions of the Corneum Stratum and then start cutting back.- I can't tell you which products will work for you, so you would have to go the trial-and-error-route as with anything else. But at least you now know which ingredients are needed to repair a compromised skin barrier.
