[Research] I figured out what my skin hates. Cetyl Alcohols and Cetearyl Alchols, etc. And they are incredibly common, even in ‘alcohol free’ products. After eliminating them from my routine, I have clear skin as an adult for the first time.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So these are common ingredients in a lot of gentle face cleansers. They are hard to avoid. They are allowed to be included in Alcohol free products because they are a fatty alcohol and react differently with the skin than something like isopropyl alcohol. The wiki link way below has a list of all the fatty alcohols.Fatty alcohols are a waxy soft substance used as a thickener in products and to cleanse the skin as it is oil emulsified. A lot of people have no problem with it as fatty alcohols typically are gentle to the skin, but after looking further into studies about the comedogenicity of cetyl alcohol and all its friends, they are in fact at least mildly pore clogging despite their gentle label.PSA over, my personal journey below, skip if you don’t care :) Listing interesting sources below!I can’t use the holy grail Cetaphil or Cereve cleansers without breaking out and I know a lot of us on here are like that. I initially thought it was dimethicone, which may very well be the case as I still avoid it in cleansers, but I STILL had acne after using products which I deemed safe for my skin. Dimethicone is in a lot of facial products and lotions as well.I had the typical teenage acne that never seemed to clear up. After I quit birth control three years ago my acne got worse. I broke out in my cheeks and chin instead of my usual forehead and nose from high school. I would have 5-9 super deep painful cysts at any given time and several run of the mill pimples, blackheads, clogged pores etc.The cysts give me red marks and PIH when they healed. I started paying better attention to skincare like using moisturizer and sunscreen and using masks/stridex/spot treatments. Avoided sulfates and bought only alcohol free cleansers, non pore clogging and hypoallergenic. The best my skin had looked in several years was when I decided to try Basis bar soap and nothing else on my face to cleanse, and some rotating moisturizers (whatever was gentle and on sale lol). My skin HATES cetaphil and most cereve products. I also lurked here and started looking for AHA/BHA stuff to use but I only used what I found on the clearance rack occasionally. My cysts became fewer and fewer, and my acne cleared up a lot. But not all the way, and I always get awful cyst or two around my period. I thought this was just how I am and I just have to ride it out because hormones.I purchased Simple moisturizer and Simple cream cleanser and used these as well as my basis bar soap. The bar I would outside of the shower (mornings or whenever) and the cream cleanser in the shower. Plus whatever I felt like using like sunscreen or stridex. I did this for just under a year thinking it was as good as it will get.I found a bunch of AHA and BHA products on sale that looked good to try( I’ll list them below) and began religiously using them. I also found that I could use CereVe healing ointment (like the vaseline type one) on my face to deal with an eczema breakout around my mouth and nose without a breakout which I found odd since it does contain dimethicone, but it left my skin moisturized better and no major pimples.I established a really good habit of using my products and noticed some improvements. My skin would clear blemishes quickly but new ones would ALWAYS surface somewhere. Not a cure. So I decided to try to figure out why I still broke out.I read all my ingredients and realized I was still using alcohols on my face. Went shopping with intent to find one cleanser that met all my needs- no alcohols whatsoever, no sulfates, no dimethicone, non comedogenic, hypoallergenic. Oh and no plastic micro bead bullshit but thats a given.Found one-after maybe three weeks (am poor need discount sales).Alba Hawaiian botanica volcanic clay anti pollution facial cleanser. It’s made with fruit stuff and volcanic clay. Is it really anti pollution? Who knows but it checked all the boxes and it was 6$ at TJ Max so I bought it. Began using it instead of my basis bar and simple cleanser and within a week my face was clear.Dude, my fucking face is clear Like not one pimp Not a single oneCLEAR GLOWY SKINI am so happy I actually wore pretty makeup twice this month. And I didn’t have pimples after. I’m so happy :DOkay I will post my routine now.ROUTINE my preference is NO fatty alcohols or regular alcohols, no sulfates, non comedogenic. I still avoid dimethicone in anything aside from the Cereve but I think my problems were actually from the fatty alcohols.MORNING -Alba Botanica Hawaiian Detox and Anti Pollution Volcanic Clay Cleanser (it’s a cleanser even though it sounds like a masque!)-Skincare Cosmetics Retinol Vitamin C Advanced Brightening serum-wash hands with soap and use either tap water or a bottle of rose water I was recently gifted to dampen face all over a tad (I use my hands so I make sure I don’t have conditioner or something on them)-With a slightly damp face I put Cereve healing ointment on my face al over and use the excess to rub into my hands as well-dusting of translucent powder for the shineEVENING -Alba Botanica Hawaiian Detox and Anti Pollution Volcanic Clay CleanserFor the next bit I just rotate through products honestly depending on what I haven’t used in a while/feel like using/or skip all together if I used a clay mask recently**-I rotate through Nip FAB glycolic acid daily cleanings pads/extreme nighttime glycolic acid pads/glycolic acid serum depending on which one I feel like using that night with no other reasonings- my Skin reacts super well to glycolic acid but I can’t tell the difference between the products honestly. Bought them all super cheap at a clearance bin at CVS.-I use Stridex in the red box sometimes but always alongside and AHA like a NIP FAB product above or Elizabeth Arden Alpha Hydroxy Skin Illuminating Cleansing pads (I love these they are super strong and can be found at discount stores for much much cheaper)-Another round of the Retinol Vitamin C serum instead of anything else-wash hands, dampen face with tap water or rose water. (I don’t think the rose water does anything tap water doesn’t, just dampens the face so the cereve can seal the moisture in)-slightly bigger amount of the Cereve Healing Ointment Skin Protectant over my face and lips. And that’s it! My skin hasn’t been better! My forehead is pimple free and smooth! No cysts, no pimples!! I have some clogged pores and minor texture issues but compared to where they were a month ago I am in awe of how much I’ve improved!!! I’m so excited!!! I even started my period today.... and guess what. I had one single tiny Whitehead that popped and washed away this morning. NO PERIOD CHEEK CYSTS. :DGoing to list some sources here.-The Wikipedia page with a bit of info on the fatty alcohols and their nameshttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetostearyl_alcohol-Some info from the FDA on “alcohol free” cosmetic labelinghttps://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/labeling/claims/ucm2005201.htm There are some interesting links on that page as well!-Here is an article about regular alcohol vs fatty alcohols, and a bunch of beautiful sources at the bottomhttps://www.annmariegianni.com/alcohols-in-skin-care/A fun thing I found. I know a lot of people really love Paula’s choice, Simple, and similar skin care but if you search their website about the ingredients “cetyl alcohol” and similar they are adamant it is impossible for them to cause breakouts. That’s isn’t exactly true. Looking for scholarly articles you’ll find a lot about the “comedogenicity” of cosmetics. Warning, lots of animal testing. But it appears that there are lots of conclusions that these fatty alcohol ingredients are at least mildly comedogenic after all despite major skin care brands refuting that claim. There is also a problem with misrepresentation on packaging, as there isn’t a good regulation of labeling products. Example- controversy in what “natural”, “hypoallergenic”, “gentle”, “non comedogenic”, etc.———————————————- TL:DRBasically, cosmetic labeling doesn’t mean anything because it isn’t regulated. Cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, etc are all fatty alcohols and at least mildly comedogenic. So if you have tried all the holy grail products and still can’t figure it out, ditch the fatty alcohols! They may be the cause of your acne despite how “gentle” they are! I have never had clearer skin!!!I hope this was informative and sorry if formatting etc was weird let me know if I need to add anything!!!
