[Anti-Aging] Which Vitamin C do I buy?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I looked through the sidebar and searched for threads about viamin C and I am pretty overwhelmed by the amount of choices there are when it comes to vitamin C, so I'm here to ask a simple question: What is the best vitamin C product out there for anti-aging purposes?

No Picking Challenge, Day 3. How is everyone doing?!? [acne]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've definitely slipped a few times, but only on pimples that were ready to go. Overall, my skin is very slowly improving.Still hoping for a positive outcome on Friday. One thing that has been really helping me is hydrocolloid bandages. I slap one on and the urge to touch and pick is gone. Plus, when I finally take it off, the skin underneath is so much better. Highly recommend!

[Personal] For the first time in 10 months of dating my boyfriend, I finally felt comfortable enough to take off my makeup. Thank you SCA!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am 23 and have dealt with acne since I was about 11. From mild cases up until high school when I got hormonal cystic acne. Discovering this sub (and a little bit of AB), I have learned so much and found some great products that have helped me.My boyfriend and I do not live together, but I sleep over there a couple times a week and always slept with my makeup on (yikes). But now, although my skin is not 100% yet, I was comfortable enough to begin taking it off at night now and wash my face. Such a great feeling after being so insecure about it.Cheers!

Hello! I've been trying to follow ScA and MuA advice, but I can't get the products without them costing an arm and a leg!I live in the EU (Slovenia) and local stores don't carry those brands. I don't want to ship it from amazon.com, because of the enormous tax and shipping cost but also don't want to buy it from amazon.de / amazon.co.uk, because the same products cost MUCH more! Check picture for side by side cart comparison. Can anyone recommend me some European cosmetics webstore, where I can't get all those products with reasonable prices and shipping? [Misc] Was my esthetician uninformed or am I wrong?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone! Sorry if this is the wrong tag, but couldn't find another that fit. I have a story from going to see an esthetician yesterday and I feel like she did a lot of things she shouldn't have and gave me bad advice. However, she said she did this for 13 years and I've only been into skincare for a few years so I don't want to just assume I'm right and gather more info.So yesterday I went to get my first chemical peel. I thought about doing one myself, but figured I'd get it done professionally. The service included a consultation, but I figured I'd probably want to get a Mandelic acid peel for my acne prone skin or something to help my uneven color and texture.I feel like I have a decent amount of knowledge from here and r/AsianBeauty, but I know I'm not a professional. I use Cerave hydrating cleanser, kikumasamune lotion, FAB moisturizer, 20% vitamin C serum and stridex in the morning (and biore watery essence sunscreen). At night I use the same cleanser, lotion, moisturizer, and do curology (azealic acid, zinc, clindamycin) and sometimes Corsx AHA power liquid. I know that's a lot of a actives but I started them all very slowly and my skin has been MUCH better. I only have a few pimples but I have some acne scarring and Pigment from past acne.So when I saw the woman, she said my skin was oily and didnt want to do anything for my acne prone skin, as I only had 1 pimple. She asked what I used and she did not like that. I used the word "actives" and she didn't know what I meant, but I figured it was just slang for here and AB. I said I used Stridex and she said I should NEVER use that because it is only for oily teens and no one else, as it's very harmful. She also said that Vitamin C was good but there no point in me using it because it's only to help sun damage (I use it for pigmentation, acne scarring, and plumpness around my eyes). I told her about the AHA stuff and she was also very upset because I should never use lactic acid/glycolic acid by myself. She said to stop everything and just use the cleanser and moisturizer and that all of my problems were from the harsh things. She was very condescending about it and I felt too nervous to say anything. She then said that I don't need a peel, I need a facial and extractions. She said that once I get the oils out of the pores, they'll look smaller and more even. I knew this was bad, but I felt pushed to just do it, which I did. ):Not only did she do extractions, she also rubbed some kind of scrub on my face that felt like St. Ives AND put something only my face that smelled like lavender! I was freaking out inside but I didn't have the courage to say anything. I also don't think she put any sunscreen on me and didn't even mention it.I know I use too many actives but it seems to control my acne really well. What does everyone else here think?

[Sun Care] My skin always looks amazing the day after I get a lot of sun. How can I mimic this effect without the negative effects (cancer, wrinkles, burns, etc.) of the sun?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have combination skin, huge pores, uneven skintone/discoloration, mild-moderate acne, and just very not-firm/tight skin. The day after my face gets a lot of sun I notice that I have less acne, a more even skin tone, seemingly smaller pores, and more firm/bouncy/younger-looking skin. I'm honestly not really sure why the sun is literally the most effective skincare for me, or really what the fuck the sun is actually Doing to cause these effects. So could anyone explain What the sun is doing, and then some products/procedures that mimic what it's doing without the worry of cancer/wrinkles/burns?

[Personal] My acne-prone combination skin feels the best it ever has, and I am *pissed* at the godawful quality of typical acne products.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had acne since my early teens. I tried a couple OTC products at first, but most of them seemed to make no difference or dried out my skin so much it hurt. I tried oil-free "moisturizers" (so many of which had actives in them) that did not seem to hydrate my skin so much as coat it in greasy, plasticy gunk. I went to a dermatologist once, who prescribed me a retinoid, antibiotic, and benzoyl peroxide all at once, with instructions to use all of them daily after cleansing - even though I was not the most diligent kid, that kind of overload hurt my skin horribly. Since all the acne treatments I could find seemed to leave me no better off, I basically gave up after that. I did stumble across acne.org at one point, and a friend let me try their treatment and moisturizer for a few days, but the moisturizer wasn't hydrating enough for me, and I couldn't have afforded it myself anyway. Birth control toned my "moderate" acne down to "mild", and I figured that was just about the best I could hope for.The last few years, I was in a holding pattern, using a couple different Neutrogena cleansers and whatever light hippie moisturizer I could afford. I still had acne, but it wasn't that bad as long as I wasn't too aggressive with my skin, and at least my face didn't hurt.Fast forward to the past couple weeks. I have had acne for over a decade now, and it may be mild but I am just so done. I'm tired of the pimples on my chin being one of the most obvious features in my pictures, and being a pretty small guy, I really don't need anything making me look younger than I am. Thank goodness I found this sub! I couldn't quite resist overhauling my whole routine at once (whoops), so here's what I'm working with now:OCM, using a homemade blend with castor oil + the various non-comedogenic oils in my kitchen. I massage it in gently but firmly for a little bit.Wash off the oil using the Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser I've been using for a while. I think I'm going to opt for something a tad gentler once I use up my current tube, but it's fine for now.L'Occitane Angelica Toner - yay dumpster diving! I used to switch between this and a really drying toner before I learned the magic of moisture. I really appreciate having this on before...Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Daily Leave-On Mask. This is the only 2.5% benzoyl peroxide leave-on I could find at my grocery store. I'm taking it slow, applying it only every other day at first, but it hasn't made my skin angry yet.And I swapped out my moisturizer for ShiKai Borage Therapy Advanced Formula. It has a surprisingly watery texture, which I think is part of why it works for me - it goes on lightly over my oily areas while giving a lot of hydration, and I can rub a little extra into my eyes and cheeks. If I feel like doing a PM cleanse (I don't wear makeup so it's less of a necessity), I use a mixture of honey and bentonite clay. Once again, more hydration, less oil! (then toner/moisturizer.)I've been using a homemade sugar scrub (just table sugar + oil) once a week for a while now. I rub it in small circles very gently with my fingertips, and my face feels so soft afterward.I'm going to be changing my pillowcase more often, and running an alcohol swab over the ear cups of my headphones weekly.I've only been using this full routine for a few days, but the difference has been like night and day. The moisture across my face is more even than it's ever been - my cheeks are no longer dry, not even a little. My forehead may be inherently oily, but it's not slick anymore. I haven't had any new pimples - a few comedones, but everything seems to be healing faster and looking less red. My skin is so obviously better that my sister commented on it and wanted to know what I was using. It's hydrated and bouncy and soft all over.So I'm left here thinking, "Is this really all it took?" My routine isn't expensive, I haven't had the time to get hardcore about optimizing it, and it honestly doesn't take very long to do (unless I want it to - oil cleansing feels gooood.) In all that time, I could have had dramatically clearer, nicer-feeling skin if someone had just told me to use a gentle cleanser, to go slow and careful with any treatments I tried, and to search high and low for a moisturizer that would hydrate me properly without making me break out. Instead, I assumed for the longest time that I should only be using products that were "oil-free" or "for acne", leaving me in a wasteland of stripping, drying, irritating products that made my skin feel worse than if I had left it alone.I know my routine has room to improve, once I've spent a few weeks settling into it - I'm going to be on the lookout for a sunscreen, and I would be (pleasantly!) surprised if the BP totally clears my acne on its own. Even so, it's so obviously better than anything I've tried before that I'm kind of stunned.Thank you, SA! You have saved my face! Now how can we spread the word?

[Routine Help] [Personal] I am a mess, I need help with both routines and make up

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello skincare addicts! :) I'm going to present quite a case for you, and I desperately feel like I need help. Here's what you're dealing with:Major Depressive Disorder, which limits the fuck I give about anything. Meaning that it is hard to keep a routine, especially "complicated" ones. I can barely remember to take my medication..Regular smoker. I smoke cigarettes. Shame on me, but I'm not about to quit anytime soon. RIP lungs and skin. I WILL QUIT EVENTUALLY.I have absolutely no idea what I am doing when it comes to caring for my skin. Good luck to all of us.My skin gets dehydrated in the winter, but it is absolutely oily as well. I get pimples regularly, and I have small red dots everywhere on my face. Especially my forehead and chin feels rough. And here comes the real horror: Me wearing makeup. I somehow manage to look worse. I struggle with confidence, and this does not help. When I finally manage to drag my ass outside, I don't ever feel comfortable with my grainy, scaly face.http://imgur.com/a/ILCUG (My insides are screaming. It took a lot to dare to post these.)Routines (lol):I occasionally wash with Garniers Clarifying Cleansing Gel, usually before I wear makeup or when taking a shower (five times a week, at the most)I've recently purchased a new moisturizer. Lancome: Hydra Zen Anti Stress I use it after washing and always before putting on makeup.I use ARTDECO Mineral Powder Foundation as my foundation after applying moisturizer. To apply it, I use a big, round powder brush that looks something like this as recommended by the woman who once had the pleasure of dealing with my eyebrows. It was expensive as fuck.So. I'm obviously looking for both routine products and make up products to suit my skin. I already bought an expensive moisturizer (Lancome), so I can probably buy another in the same price range, but I'm mostly looking for cheaper options if possible. Please help me. Even to just improve it a little.. There's family gatherings in the near future and I'm terrified to feel like a scaled dragon in the face while trying to get through the day.Feel free to ask me any questions. Thanks <3

[Product Question] Why is Cerave PM so much more expensive than Cerave in the tub?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Cerave PM is currently on Amazon at $25 for a total of 6oz while Cerave in the Tub is available at $12 for 16oz. I understand that they're not the same thing, but after using the search and reading reviews from people who have tried both, one does not seem to be worth 5 times more per ounce than the other. They both contain Ceramides, Niacinamide, and Hyaluronic Acid. What makes PM worth the much higher cost?

[Acne] Getting rid of dark spots?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi, everyone. So I have these dark spots on my cheeks which I'm sure is because of past acne, because they appeared after those pimples went away. My right side has faded a little on its own, so it's not too noticeable to be an issue. But my left cheek has a dark spot that is very noticeable to the point people even ask me if I've gotten punched recently (lol).I've been using foundation to cover it up for the time being, but this is really beginning to bother me and I've Googled all sorts of things to get some help. No results, so I'm here.http://i.imgur.com/prHf7fy.jpgThis is how it looks like from my phone's camera, but it looks darker in person. It's really just that one spot. I don't get acne too often, but when I do, it's usually just in one or two places and it goes away eventually. I don't really have any particular problems with acne.I don't have much of a routine either, I wash my face, then I apply toner and lotion. I also use sunscreen when I go out. Thanks in advance!

[Meta] Something that really bothers me in skincare communities... (long)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi! I am a first time poster so please tell me if I tagged or formatted this wrong or broke any rules/guidelines. I recently purchased the BEST toner ever (Thayer's alcohol-free witch hazel toner with rose, its like $11 at target it will make you literally glow) and while it is quite lovely on my teenage, combo-to-oily rosacea prone skin, I can't help but think about how so many people would look down on it's low price. So basically, as a 15 yr old girl, I'm pretty big into social media, my favorites being Instagram and Tumblr (yeah...tumblr...sorry...), and on those sites there's this trend of buying from brands like Glossier, Milk Makeup, etc. Those brands are kind of what this little rant is about. If you are unfamiliar with these brands, they are quite trendy and really on the pricey side. They market their products as special and unique with magical ingredients and beautiful, aesthetically pleasing minimalist packaging.Basically, they'll produce a .5 oz pot of a generic cleanser/moisturizer/mask/whatever with subpar ingredients, give it a name like 'fresh grrrl sparkle unicorn dew rose jelly miracle elixir' do an ad campaign with a clear and dewy-skinned pretty model, and sell it online for $30...The issue I have, however, is that their marketing is quite misleading and manipulative. Their ingredients are cheap and while may not be harmful or bad, they certainly are not worth the big bucks they charge, as if one can't buy the same crappy dimethicone laced moisturizer from target for way cheaper than your trendy tumblr cool grl brand sells. Heck, glossier sells a bottle of rosewater spray for like $18 when you could get a bottle of the same thing for $8 at ulta!I just felt the need to address this as many people are falling into the marketing traps of these brands, especially when these brands portray their products as 'all natural' (they aren't) and the brands themselves as 'indie'.(edit: double spaced and added more details)

[Selfie] I never thought of myself as someone with good skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
All my life I've been a "picker". My mom always scolded me as a child for it, my legs are covered in little circular scars from picking at my mosquito bites from when I didn't listen. Every single photo I saw of myself, there was a sore on my face. Whether it was below my eye; on my forehead, the middle of my cheek, on my chin- I always found an imperfection to pick at. Then I found this sub. I switched to a much simpler routine, and also found help at the compulsive skin picking subreddit. I have bipolar disorder, so it's not surprising to me to find out my skin picking was actually a mental issue that other people suffered from too. My last picking purge was a little over a month ago, and here I am today. I feel comfortable without makeup, and I'm not worried about someone staring at the giant scab I made on my cheek (or wherever). The wake up call was when someone told me who hadn't see me since high school said they noticed some scarring starting to happen. I'm only 22, and wanted to nip that right in the bud before it got worse over the years. I'm so proud of myself :-) Who knew that touching my face constantly was the cause of my bad skin?http://imgur.com/a/Bax9R

[Personal] I have chronic dry skin and I think I've finally found a cleansing line for my sensitive skin.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I was diagnosed with Xerosis Cutis (chronic dry skin) several years ago and finding a routine and moisturizers has been a battle. I've used Cetaphil and CeraVe products and they both make my skin react angrily. I'll get a pimply rash that itches and feels like a sunburn. My body reacts differently than my face. I have not seen a dermatologist because I use the VA for healthcare and if the primary doctor thinks they can handle it, it stays in that office. I also haven't really been fighting for a dermatologist recently because my skin has been doing better (water, water, water!).Recently, I bought a sampler pack of the H2O+ Beauty facial cleansing routing with body wash and hand lotion. I've been using it for about a week and I love it.The pack comes with a face wash (Elements), color correcting mask (Waterbright), renewing youth serum (Infinity +), hydrating treatment (Oasis), body wash (Sea Salt), and a hand and cuticle lotion (Specialty Care). The body wash has a tingling sensation and smells great. It also doesn't dry my skin. The facial wash does have a scent but doesn't irritate. The color correcting mask has a tingle too, I was most afraid of using this one but I haven't had a reaction yet. I've also noticed the closed comedones on my face are disappearing. The directions state to put on a thin veil and after ten minutes rub any remaining moisture in.The youth serum is great too, both the mask and serum are watery. My favorite is the hydrating serum. I thought I'd been ripped off at first because there was hardly anything in the jar but a little goes a long way. It's a gel that leaves my skin feeling soft. The cuticle and hand cream is really great too. It has a "fresh" scent that isn't really fresh but it hydrates wonderfully.Overall, I'm happy with the purchase that hasn't made my skin react. I'm already seeing changes with use, I have these weird dark patches under both eyes (not dark circles, I have those too) that are lightening up. I have no idea where they came from or what they are other than uneven skin tone.

[Product Question] The Ordinary Vitamin C Questions!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Can The Ordinary Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate 20% in Vitamin F be added into my moisturiser (and serums, HA) and applied on face without losing potency? Or does it only work being applied directly onto skin, and moisturiser being applied separately later? Also, I'm currently using Paula's Choice RESIST C15 Super Booster. How do these products compare? Is it a worthy switch? I am also using The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, and just found out it is listed as "conflicts with vitamin c"! I've been using them both in my PM routine, is this rendering them useless?!

[Routine Help] Using a retinoid on non-acne prone skin?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi guys,I've just bought the Ordinary 2% Retinoid and have a few questions before I start using it.For background: I don't have 'acne prone' skin in that I rarely have breakouts, but I do have lots of blackheads, and small hard bumps around my chin and nose. I also have some redness on my cheeks. My skin is very dry in general, and I have some fine lines on my forehead from dehydration. I'm a 22 y/o female. My routine currently looks like this:AM:Cetaphil cleanserThe Ordinary 12% Ascorbyl Glucoside SerumKiehls Daily Revival SerumA few drops of The Ordinary Pure SqualaneCetaphil MoisturiserLa Roche Posay SPF 50+PM:Remove makeup with oil-based garnier cleanserCetaphil cleanserPixi Glow tonicThe Ordinary Rosehip OilMoisturiserThe Ordinary Niacinimide + Zinc on any blemishes (can you tell I'm mad for the Orinary??)I'm planning on introducing the retinoid very slowly to let my skin get used to it, once a week, or once every three days (?) to begin with.I've read that I shouldn't use an AHA at the same time as a retinoid. However, ff I use my retinoid in the evening and switch my vitamin C serum to the evening (so that it doesn't clash with my glow tonic), can I use my glow tonic in the morning? Or should I just use it on days when I don't use the retinoid? Or not at all until my skin gets used to the retinoid? How do you know when your skin has adjusted well enough to start increasing the frequency with which you use a retinoid? If I start with every week/every three days, how will I know when it's time to move to every day etc.?If I don't really break out often but have a decent bunch of clogged pores around my chin, how bad do you suspect my 'purge' period will be?Any other tips for introducing retinoids?Thank you soooooo much guys.

[Misc] I'm going to do a 10 minute (informal) speech in class about skincare. If you were in the audience, what would you like to hear about?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm not sure if this type of board is accepted but in any case... I'm seeking help. There are so many things I want to talk about in this speech but the time limit is a big restraint.I've limited the topic to general information and the common misconceptions regarding skincare - basic stuff, really. And even though I've limited it to that, there's still a plethora of information that I would've liked to share with the class but can't.I already have a general idea/flow about the various topics I want to touch on (pH balance, types of acne, harmful stuff: astringents- excessive physical exfoliation- baking soda- citrus fruits- the like, etc.), but I would also like your input. :) In short, what would you like to hear/know more about?

[Before&After] I reduced the texture from my Closed Comedones in TWO (2!!) days using the boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had the boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel for over a year now and i stopped using it because i thought it was a gimmick and didn't really do much to my face. I always followed the instructions on the bottle and didn't see much results. Out of desperation i decided to try it out again but i didn't follow the instructions, i did it my own way. Here is how i did it:First, cleanse your face and dry it. Take a pump of the peeling gel and start rubbing in a section of your faceRub in circular motions in a section of your face for 60 - 80 seconds until you get the "white/brown" flakes. It is imperative that you work in sections and not try to do your whole face at onceSlightly wet the section with the flakes. DO NOT RINSE. Just wet the sectionGet a cotton pad and wet it slightly. Use the cotton pad to remove the flakes. Be gentle, do not scrub.Rinse with cold water until flakes have gone and moisturize immediately after. If youre doing this in the morning, please do not forget to wear SPF after you moisturize.Steps 3 & 4 are not written as instructions in the bottle and i feel like using the cotton really help absorb any dirt or oils that would have stayed had i just rinsed the product off my face. It is VERY important that you rub in circular motions for at least 60 seconds.I was really disheartened when i posted and was told that CC's stay for a long time and it takes months to see any results.HERE are pictures of my 2 day 'progression'This is the before and after results after using the peel only ONCE! I plan to use this peel once or twice a week.Yes i understand that this may not work for everyone but i thought i could share this with other people incase they wanted to try.I bought the boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel from Sephora and if you want to test this out, you could get a sample without purchasing from there. Also, this is my first time posting something like this. Sorry if i have any formatting issues or if my explanations are not as advanced as other posts. Thank you for reading guys!edit: I have dry to combo skin and the moisturizer i used was the fresh creme ancienne. I did not use any other products on my face as i did this during the night.edit 2: the first picture (before) , i have make up on to cover it up. the second picture (after) is without any makeup.

[Routine Help] Currently using expensive "spa" products and looking to replace with something less expensive, but still effective!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey SCA!I'm currently using a ton of products from the Zo Medical line that were all recommended by my facialist. While I think the products are working and not causing additional issues, they are HELLA expensive and I'm hoping to find alternatives that are a bit easier on the wallet. My current skin concerns include: redness on my cheeks/nose, hormonal acne on my chin/jaw and what I believe to be closed conedomes on my chin and sometimes around my nose. I've got an oily T-zone and my cheeks are sometimes dry depending on the weather. I live in hot and humid Florida. Here's my current routine:AM-Splash my face with water-Moisturize with Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel-Sunscreen from Zo Medical line and LM Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 if wearing makeup PM-Remove makeup with Simple Micellar Water-Wash face with Zo Medical Norma-cleanse (Ingredients here)-Zo Medical Vitamin C 10% ($93!) (Ingredients here)-Zo Medical Daily Power Defense ($150) (Ingredients here)-Moisturize with Clinique's DDMG I also occasionally use the following products:-Zo Medical Exfoliating Polish (Ingredients Here)-Aveda Botanical Kinetics Deep Cleansing Clay Mask Prior to this line of products, I used Aveda and Clinique products. So, in a nutshell, can anyone help me find a replacement these ridiculously expensive products? And as for the"Daily Power Defense" I'm not even entirely sure what it does... the site says it tightens/firms skin and combats skin damage. Do I need that? Can I replace it with something else? My primary goals are to eliminate the redness and clear up my chin, and try to combat signs of aging before they happen (I'm 26) THANK YOU GUYS FOR EVERYTHING!Also, here are pictures

[Skin Concerns] A scab on my nose that won't disappear

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I have a small wound on my nose which is still pink/reddish. I got it two weeks ago when I punctured the spot with a needle and squeezed it because I thought it was acne forming. Turned out it was nothing… Here are some pictures:http://imgur.com/jDAJzwRhttp://imgur.com/jYOEq7fhttp://imgur.com/q1wkeiQThe wound is not open anymore and it's on the same level as the rest of the skin but I guess you can still see traces of where the needle was under certain light conditions (pic 1). Also, it doesn't have a rough texture, it feels like the rest of the skin.My skin is acne prone so my routine consists of mild cleansing, BP and moisturizing, every night before sleep. In the morning, I'm just cleansing and moisturizing. I'm using AHA every 4 nights or so. During the first week I got the wound, I still used BP and AHA on it and even put lemon juice for a bit. Please excuse my stupidity, I eventually realized that those things, especially the exfoliation, didn't help at all. They most likely had the exact opposite effect. Now I'm left with this. It used to be more red, now it's more pinkish but I can't really tell if new skin is forming. It's probably improving over time, but it's very hard to tell and is changing really slowly for sure. Now I'm only using a moisturizer on it along with a layer of vaseline on top. When it's well moisturized, it almost blends with the rest of the skin and it's no longer red, but when I remove the vaseline, it's back to its old condition. This hasn't really changed over the past few days. What should I do? Should I continue moisturizing it? How long will it take to fully heal? Also, will there be a scar left?

[Review] Aveeno cleansers: Clear Complexion vs. Positively Radiant

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been struggling with cystic acne for over two years after a very bad reaction to a generic medication. I was lucky to never have more than a pimple or two on my forehead as a teenager, so I was completely unprepared for this to start happening in my mid 20's! I was miserable and in pain, and was embarrassed to even go to work. Last month, I was finally able to see my PCP and get a prescription for clindamycin and have been using that in combination with ProNexin All-Natural Daily Face Scrub, Stridex red box pads, and Aveeno Clear Complexion cleanser, plus going back on a birth control pill (I had stopped taking them to begin tracking ovulation cycles). The progress has been slow, but my skin finally went through a purge and is starting to turn the corner.I ran out of the Aveeno cleanser last week and stopped by the drugstore to pick up another bottle, but accidentally grabbed the Positively Radiant cleanser instead. I didn't realize it until I was already in the shower, so I used it and went about my routine. In just a few days, the texture of my skin has become much smoother, my remaining cysts have drained, and I can't see any new acne under the surface, except for a few small whiteheads that I've been able to extract easily without flaring up. I haven't needed to use the Stridex pads at all. I'm not sure if my skin needed a gentler cleanser, but this seems to really be working and I wanted to let others know in case any of you have been struggling with something similar. I've been tracking progress with pictures for about 60 days, and will look forward to seeing how much more progress I'll make in another month - will post another update then!

[personal] [acne] I've been struggling with acne and red spots on and off and I've reached my breaking point.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi all, I don't know if this is allowed or not, but I've honestly reached my breaking point tonight. I've been scouring this subreddit for a few months now and I don't know what to do anymore.http://imgur.com/a/SiVF6My skin is combination, with a very oily t-zone. I break out mostly on my cheeks and chin, which some of it is hormonal but the other 95% of the time, I don't know why I'm breaking out. I've been to the dermatologist several times and they did help, but the products they gave me made my skin very red and dry, and flaky as well. I've been given Epiduo and Aczone, along with medicated wipes when my skin got okay. Currently, I use Trader Joe's tea tree oil face wash along with Lush Dark Angels every other day. I wipe my face down with Seabreeze astringent, and use Epiduo as spot treatment for my big zits which sometimes helps. I make sure to change my pillowcase fairly often, along with not using the same towel for my body as my face. I also take oral contraceptives, which don't do much for my acne unfortunately. Can anyone recommend any products or literally anything to do to help this? I'm tired of being ashamed of my skin :(

[Personal] Help with face redness?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I'm getting married later this year and we plan on going out for some drinks after the ceremony and before pictures. Great! Should be fun! The problem is, my face gets so extremely red when I drink even one drink that it's embarrassing. I normally wouldn't mind if we weren't planning on having all of our formal (non church) pictures after the drinking, but I'd really just love to hear opinions on any skin care solutions for this? I do plan on having my makeup done, either with a professional or DIY (haven't decided yet). Thanks for your help! If there's a better sub to ask this question, would you be willing to point me in that direction?

Does a little acne need a lot of treatment? [acne]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
First time poster and new to the thread, so advance apologizes if I missed a protocol.I'm a 26 year old female, just found out from the dermatologist I have cystic acne. She prescribed Benzaclin 1%-5% every morning, Retin-A .025% at bedtime, and 3 months of Doxycycline. Of course I want to clear up my acne, but I'm wondering if this is overkill. My acne is contained to a very small area (less than thumb length) and pretty sparse. I am very fair skinned and am hesitant to go down a course that will make me more sun sensitive if it isn't necessary. I also have extremely dry skin.I have tried Stridex pads and had some slow success in clearing it up. It's easy to conceal my acne with makeup, so I'm debating trying a wait-and-see approach with the Stridex and other OTC solutions, or adding the Benzaclin in as a spot treatment but holding off on the Retin-A/Doxcycline.My questions are: Is there a downside to ignoring my derm's prescribed course and not treating this aggressively from the start? Is scarring likely to occur? Has anyone been in my situation and had success clearing up acne just using BHAs?Also, my routine is: AM - rise face with water, rosehip oil, Yonka 28 cream. PM - remove makeup with rosehip oil, rinse with Eminence Stonecrop Gel Wash, tone with rosehip oil, Yonka 28 cream. And, off and on I've tried Stridex pads and a Paula's Choice BHA for the last month which has cleared up the acne a fair bit. Thanks for reading!

[Routine Help] May be a stupid question -- but are you supposed rinse before or after applying a chemical exfoliant?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
The SCA routine info in the sidebar doesn't specify. I also just ordered a sample of Paula's exfoliants and they don't mention anything abotu rinsing before hand, and specifically say do NOT rinse AFTER applying. This seems strange that you're not supposed to rinse after applying, and just leave it on your face the whole night.

[Sun Care] Best sunscreen I have found yet - Blue Lizard Australian SUNSCREEN SPF 30+, Baby

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am really picky about sunscreens because I have super fair skin being a redhead. I used to use spray on sunscreens but when I use those and would be outside for a long period of time my skin would break out in itchy red bumps.I started doing my own research and started looking for sunscreens with bare minimal ingredients or those that eliminate the harmful ones found in most sunscreens: Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Oxtisalate, Octocrylene, Homosalate, and OctinoxateThe blue lizard sunscreen doesn't have any of that. It's main active ingredients are the minerals Zinc Oxide at 10% and Titanium Dioxide at 5%.Reminder Titanium dioxide poses a possible human carcinogen concern for inhalation AND products that may be aerosolized (airborne). Better to use lotions than spray sunscreens since titanium dioxide is in most sunscreens.I am ordering the baby one because I always feel like that is the most gentle option to go with. I will post a review once I get some use out of it!

I was recently introduced to the concept of "beauty sickness" as described in this ted talk. [Sun care] Comparison of four alcohol- and fragrance- free sunscreens. Oily, sensitive skin edition. Lots of pictures

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Imgur albumA couple of words about my skin to help to understand my perspective (and hopefully translate how the sunscreens would behave on you): I have oily, sensitive skin that is very prone to closed comedones (I use BHA daily). My skin and eyes are sensitive and both burn if I use a wrong kind of sunscreen (cough LRP Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid chemical cough). My skin colour is around NW15 – NW20.In this review, I am focusing on cosmetic performance as I do nothave means or knowledge to adequately compare the effectiveness and formulations of the sunscreens. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin SPF 60 Dry TouchNotes: water resistant (up to 80 minutes), supposed to be good for acne-prone skinActive ingredients: avobenzone 3% • homosalate 15% • octisalate 5% • octocrylene 7%Full ingredient list: official LRP website (US)Thoughts: It’s awful. It has a very thick, pasty consistency that leaves a hell of a white cast even on fairest skin tones. Instead of absorbing, it dries down to a very matte, unnatural finish and starts to ball up immediately after application. If I understand this correctly, balling is usually caused by incompatibility of water- and silicon- based products, but oddly enough this sunscreen does it even on naked skin. On top of all that, this sunscreen clings to facial hair (eyebrows, peach fuzz, beards probably as well) in the most ugly way. Because of that, I doubt that even people with very pale and oily skin would enjoy using it. If for whatever reason you are still interested in it, I highly suggest you trying it out in store first (I bought mine online and couldn’t).Bottom-line: looks and feels like Halloween makeup. EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 (untinted version)Notes: contains 5% “high-purity” niacinamide (vitamin B3), supposed to be good for acne-prone skinActive ingredients: zinc oxide 9.0% • octinoxate 7.5%Full ingredient list: official EltaMD websiteThoughts: This sunscreen leaves minimal to no white cast on me which is pretty impressive considering the 9% zinc oxide. It has a white gel texture that goes clear upon application, leaving a shiny (but not greasy!) finish. Applying a translucent powder takes away the shininess completely. The problem with this sunscreen is that it balls up a lot (but much less than LRP Dry Touch). I find that if I apply it on small areas (e.g. quarter of a cheek) at a time and blend it right away before it sets, I can reduce the balling considerably. However, if you let it set and then try to rub it, it will ball up and cause the parts around to start balling up too (domino effect). Because of this, if you scratch your face throughout the day, this would probably not work for you. I would also imagine this wouldn’t work if you wear liquid or cream makeup. I have heard that using EltaMD’s moisturizer prior to this sunscreen helps to reduce the balling but I have not tried using the combination.Bottom-line: if you can get it to not ball up, this would be perfect. Skin Aqua UV Moisture Milk Whitening SPF 50 PA+++ (white cap version)Notes: In Asian cosmetic terms, “whitening” means that it is supposed to fade hyperpigmentation (e.g. acne scars, sun spots – in the case of this sunscreen, with ascorbyl glucoside (vitamin C)). It does NOT contain skin bleaching agents and is safe to use by people with dark skin.Active ingredients: (not official) ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate • zinc oxide • titanium dioxideFull ingredient list: (not official) CosDNAThoughts: This sunscreen leaves no detectable white cast on me which is, once again, impressive considering the active ingredients. It absorbs quickly and leaves a dewy finish that can be obscured by using a transparent powder. This sunscreen is quite moisturizing and I find that I get oily with it throughout the day. Personally, I am willing to put up with it, but if your skin is very oily and you blot your face with absorbing sheets, be careful as they would probably remove the sunscreen, too. Over all, this is my favourite alcohol- and fragrance- free sunscreen. It is not perfect and, like many other cosmetically elegant Asian sunscreens, has meh protection but it is very wearable, which means I can apply a lot of it and get consistent coverage.Bottom-line: cosmetically elegant, but not the best UV protection. Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF50 PA++++Notes: claims to contain “85% beautifying ingredients” and promises to make you feel “as fresh as a mermaid princess” (no joke, this is from the official website)Active ingredients: (not official) ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate • diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate • zinc oxide • titanium dioxide • bisEthylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazineFull ingredient list: (not official) CosDNAThoughts: This looks and feels so lovely on the skin! Absolutely no white cast, doesn’t cling to facial hair, absorbs in no time to an invisible, demi-matte finish. Good, right? Too good, IMO.I saw this sunscreen mentioned a lot on /r/AsianBeauty and decided to give it a try, ordering it from Amazon. Upon the first application, I was surprised by how not-susnsreeny it felt and looked. I don’t think it is a good thing, though – I do not believe it is effective. There have been many reports of people burning and tanning when relying on light-textured AB sunscreens. While they are very cosmetically elegant, they don’t simply provide the best UV protection. Some manufacturers most definitely manipulate their data to claim higher SPF and PPD ratings (like in the case of Jelly Sunscreen SPF50 PA+++ that in reality offers close to no UV protection).I suspect this is exactly the case when it comes to Mermaid Gel. I wanted to email the manufacturer to ask about the ingredient percentage but the Contact Us link on their website is not working. Manually typing the URL leads to “page not found” (in Japanese) error message. I also tried contacting the Amazon seller but they don’t have ingredient information. This leaves me with:a sunscreen that doesn’t feel or look how I would expect based on its ingredientsfishy, cheesy claims about making you feel like a “mermaid princess” with the “85% beautifying ingredients”a website with broken links that looks like it was made in the 2000sThis is, of course, my personal opinion, but I don’t think this sunscreen is effective and the brand – trustworthy.I also want to add that this sunscreen has a distinct coconut scent despite (according to CosDNA) not containing any coconut derivatives or fragrance. There is a chance that the ingredient list is not accurate or something else causes the scent.Bottom-line: looks and feels like you are not wearing sunscreen at all – probably because you aren’t…  Extra infoI think the most important thing when it comes to choosing a sunscreen is to be realistic. If you want high, reliable protection, go with LRP or Neutrogena (particularly if you can get the version with ecamsule (mexoryl)), but be prepared to look like the guy from the Little Baby's Ice Cream commercial. If you don’t want white cast and greasiness, go with Asian sunscreens but be aware that you probably aren’t getting the full SPF and PPD ratings on the packaging (heck, even everyone’s favourite Biore is known for occasionally leaving people burned!).If you can’t or choose not to wear sunscreen with alcohol, be prepared that your options will be limited and you will never find something as matte and lightweight as alcohol-based.I hope this was helpful! If you have tried any other alcohol- and fragrance-free sunscreens, please let us know how they performed! Personally, I am very curious about Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30 and might order it once I go through what I currently have.Edit: I was meaning to link this but ended up forgetting. Here is an excellent comparison of good of alcohol- and -fragrance free sunscreens by /u/Peter_789. Thank you for commenting, Peter!

[Acne] how can I become more confident with a face covered in acne?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm 19 and have been dealing with severe acne since I was 12. After so long of dealing with it and hiding behind it and it worsening my already severe social anxiety, I'm absolutely fed up with it. I've tried everything to get rid of or at least help my acne situation- dermatologist visits and being prescribed topical and oral medications, OTC creams and treatments, every type of facial cleansers and moisturizers ever invented, changed and cleaned up my diet, I drink a ton of water, never touch my face, wash my pillow cases, I don't even wear makeup unless I leave my house which is only once or twice a week and when I do I take extra precautions while removing my makeup to get it all off and I even wear "acne-friendly" makeup whenever I do wear it.It has made me feel absolutely hideous and now I want to just accept that it must be hereditary and need to accept it and deal with it if I can't change it.I'm about to start my first semester in college and am absolutely terrified for that reason alone-my acne. How do I stop caring what people think of it? How do I become more confident and accept myself even with all my acne and acne scars? I can't leave my house without feeling an anxiety attack coming on because of it :(

[PSA] Mix the Ordinary's Alpha Lipoic Acid well before using.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Well, I bought it about a month ago and the first two uses I wondered what all the big deal was about people saying it was irritating. The third time I used it I felt like I was chemically burning my face off (and I've already used Ordinary's 23% Vitamin C - this is WORSE). I rinsed it off with ice cold water in probably less than 30 seconds.I've come to the conclusion that for some reason the product separated in the bottle and the first two uses probably only had what was already in the dropper. The third use, I probably got 300% ALA (kidding, but that's what it felt like).A week later, I shook the bottle well and emptied and re-filled the dropper several times and I experienced more of a normal kind of tingling.BEWARE!!! Mix the Sh*t out of it before using.

[Acne] How to treat non-inflamed cystic acne that refuses to 'just go away on it's own?'

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey all, I've got a couple of small, non-inflamed, non-painful cystic acne uhh.. cysts that are just refusing to be evicted from my face. There is one on my chin that started as a regular old CC, came to a head, and then I lanced it and hydrocolloid-ed it, and now it's taken shape as a hard white ball under my skin. The ones on my cheek are the real worry though. I've had two small cysts there since I had a major cyst in the area cortisone'd the hell out. They've been there, barely visible unless I stretch the skin, for YEARS.Every post I've read has told me these types of cysts will just go away on their own, and not to fuss with them. But, what if they don't? SCA, please help!

[Personal] I can't be thankful enough for CosDNA

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I've been a long time lurker on this subreddit, but I just had to give a shoutout and recommendation to CosDNA. CosDNA has been a huge change in how I see skin products and lotions. I used to buy the cleanest, most popular skin products regardless of ingredients until I read the "Evaluating Your Routine" sidebar (which led me to CosDNA).I know everyone is different, but from researching using CosDNA, Curology, makeupalley reviews, and Paula's Choice reviews, I really feel more educated on what products to choose.Ever since I used this website, no matter the brand name, I'm always checking to see if any product is an irritant or acne causing. My dermatologist (Curology) told me she used this website to judge the safety of skin products, too, so it seems to have some merit. For reference: http://www.cosdna.com/eng/product.phpSorry if it's been posted before, but I just wanted to share with those struggling with skin problems..because this website was a tremendous help for me.

[Skin Concerns] Does this look like it could be rosacea? Sun damage?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've dealt with facial redness for as long as I can remember, but my nose seems to be getting redder and uglier as I age. I'm able to cover everything up with makeup, but I dream of a day where I'm able to feel comfortable with my appearance without having four layers of product on my face.  My current routine is very simple: I wash with Aveeno Clear Complexion Cleanser and moisturize with Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture for Sensitive Skin. I spot-treat pimples with a benzoyl peroxide gel when needed, but I don't typically get acne. This is what my skin looks like roughly 30 minutes after washing and moisturizing. Big red nose and splotchy cheeks. It's nothing like a rash; my skin is actually quite smooth and doesn't itch or sting.  I've always thought whatever I'm dealing with is nothing like rosacea, but I've been looking at pictures and reading more information and my persistent redness and broken capillaries seem consistent with subtype 1 rosacea. I'm thinking it could also be damage from sunburns I'd gotten on more than a few occasions when I was young and careless about protecting my skin.Any feedback would be so greatly appreciated! My nose has become one of my biggest insecurities and I would like to know what I'm dealing with so I can try to find products that might help me out. I understand I could go to a dermatologist to get help (and will if I need to), but I've always gotten great advice at ScA and wanted to start here.

I'm trying to get another doctors appointment because it's been massively affecting everything, it's getting to the point that I don't want to leave the house at all.. I'm turning 28 next month and still battling. It literally feels like this is it now, this is my life. Taken over by these little bastards!I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice for closed comedones? Is there anything else I could go on whilst I'm on the Yasmin, I've been reading about spiro but not sure how easy it is to get in the U.K? [Personal] Working on improving something else has helped me prevent getting depressed over acne.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
IMHO and experience the sense of not making progress, or worse doing more harm than good and not knowing why, is the most depressing thing about trying to find a routine. Not till I found SCA did i notice my lips were pretty bad; I always avoided vaseline on them cause they would get all peely which I would pick not thinking that it's them healing. So I decided recently while I'm combating my SCA routine I'd focus on;treating my lips conditiongymdiet (this was actually the hardest to do, I generally don't eat sweets or chocolate, which I know break me out, cause of financial reasons but when there was chocolate available I'd binge it)Whenever I get depressed about not making progress on my face I remember how much progress I've made in the other aspects and get out of the runt pretty quickly and stick to my routine (I find it very easy to get unhappy i'm not making progress and want to introduce more products which is exactly how I damaged my skin in the first place).TL:DR since i've joined SCA I've stopped picking at my skin, I've gotten a better diet and stronger, and I've learned lots about skincare. It's hard to get depressed about my skin problems when I've made so much progress elsewhere.

[Routine Help] My dad is coming to visit from the U.S., what should I ask for?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello! I live in Latin America and we don't have many products here (when we do, they're too expensive) my father is coming to visit me and he can bring some skincare! I need some product advice. My skin is usually oily, but since I use the Stridex pads, it has been getting dry. I'm very prone to breakouts, sebaceous filaments and closed comedones. Also I'm very pale and my skintone isn't even (a lot of redness, etc). Focusing on finding affordable suncreen that doesn't leave me feeling "icky". Current routine:AM: Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser Neutrogena Moisturizer for Sensitive SkinPM: Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser Stridex Pads (red box) on blackhead/breakout prone areas. Neutrogena Moisturizer Vaseline every couple of days to close it off.Once a week or so I'll physically exfoliate with St. Ives green tea, which has a sandy texture, but isn't the deadly, dreadful, universally hated harsh apricot scrub. Thanks for your help in advance!

[Skin Concerns] First time BHA user, is blotchy red skin due to purging or irritation?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have oily/combination skin. Until recently, I had a very simple routine: just cleansing with a Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash and moisturising with Simple Refreshing Light Moisturiser. Last week I decided to try out Fiddy's Pore Cleansing Method using Neutrogena Visibly Clear Spot Stress Control as BHA (no Stridex or Paula's Choice in Ireland and I'm too poor to order online right now!). I used a L'Oreal Pure Clay Mask and Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil. I have previously used all these products without negative reactions, apart from the Neutrogena one. It seemed to work and my skin was soft with fewer sebaceous filaments. No immediate bad reaction. I decided to substitute the Neutrogena product for my usual daily cleanser (stupid idea seeing as it was my first time using a BHA and I know you're meant to build up rather than starting to use it every day). After two days of this I suddenly got little red bumps that looked a bit like a rash. My face is now quite blotchy and red but not sore or itchy and not flaky: https://imgur.com/a/VoVP6 My question is: do you think this is (a) normal 'purging' associated with first time use of BHA product, (b) irritation caused by the product in general, or (c) over-exfoliation due to using too much of the BHA too soon? Thanks very much for your help.

[Review] The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% has been the only topical product so far to help with my stubborn clogged pores

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been using this serum nightly, for the past 2 months now, and am certain that retinoids, or at least this formulation, will be the answer to my acne moving forward. In the past, I have used mandelic, glycolic, and lactic acids, and while they did help purge existing clogs and heal hyperpigmentation faster, they didn't prevent new clogs from appearing. Some background: These clogs that I'm prone to are likely closed comedones, little bumps under my skin with hardened sebum that only go away with extraction. After I came off antibiotics (minocycline) a few years ago, they were everywhere, including places I hadn't experienced these clogs before. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that the minocycline changed my sebum's consistency.I had been hesitant to use retinol, but decided to give The Ordinary's gentle formulation a try and am so glad I did. My skin is now almost as clear as it was when I was on antibiotics. In the first few weeks, I would say I noticed a difference in my skin texture more than my acne. The skin surrounding my existing acne was smoother and my face as a whole felt plumper, more filled-out. The only other topical that gave me a similar result was probably glycolic acid, except it purged me endlessly.6 weeks into using this retinoid is when I really started noticing the clogs clearing up. Up until this point, my acne had been more or less the same as usual. So, while I might have experienced a purge, it wasn't dramatic, just the same turnover of new clogs as usual. Now, at 9 weeks, my skin is a lot less bumpy, with much fewer clogs along my jawline, lower cheeks, and forehead where they were particularly stubborn after antibiotics. I do still experience clogged pores, but I suspect they are stubborn ones that are still in the purging process. When I look at my face as a whole, I am much less splotchy due to extracting fewer clogs and I feel so much better about my skin texture. There is a noticeable difference in how my skin was before using this product and now, which I can't say the same for the other AHAs/BHAs I have tried. If, like me, you've tried several topicals but have been ignoring retinoids for years, I'd say this is a pretty good one to start with. I think I'll probably graduate onto something a bit stronger if the few existing clogs don't disappear, but I feel more at ease knowing that retinol was the solution this entire time.A couple other notes about the formula: It's a lightweight, milky consistency that absorbs quickly into the skin. I probably used a pea size on my entire face nightly and might have overdone it at times, but only noticed slight peeling/dryness. Otherwise, no irritation in the way of redness or inflammation, but I don't really have sensitive skin to begin with.
