[Routine Help] I wasted three hours of my life on this.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I've recently gotten super into skincare which is definitely a good choice for my skin but not for my wallet. ANYWAYS, I found this sub earlier today and loved all the advice and reviews but the one thing I couldn't wrap my head around was how you guys a had the freaking time to take your CeraVe into the tub every morning like don't you all have somewhere to be?And then it hit me. I'm an idiot. You guys mean the actual container for the lotion. So yeah call me dumb but at least I'm not sitting in my bathtub right now trying to figure out what the heck you were all doing.

[Misc] humble request: please mention your skin tone and type when reviewing sunscreens
Beauty Tips For Body Care
This is a really minor, but slightly frustrating thing I've run into when researching sunscreens: people will leave glowing reviews that say things like "absolutely no white cast! Dries totally matte and doesn't get oily at all!", but with no mention of what their skin is like. For all I know you could have ultra-pale, extremely dry skin, which would make your review basically useless to me as I shop for sunscreens - maybe that same product that was so perfect on you will make me (dark, normal to oily skin) look like I'm wearing oily clown makeup. There's just no way to know for sure.

[Skin Concerns] Hello! Please help a lost guy with your skin-fu knowledge
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey, thanks for reading.I'm a 19 year old male and I'm just beginning to take care of my skin. Unfortunately, I've abstained from it until now because everyone always told me that using skincare products is "girly" and I was stupid enough to believe that. I have some concerns, which I will explain below.Skin TypeAfter reading the FAQ and lurking here for quite some time, I've determined that my skin type is most likely a mix between oily and dry. More accurately, my forehead and nose get oily as the day goes on while my cheeks and chin stay dry.Daily "routine"I only use Nivea's "DAILY ESSENTIALS SENSITIVE CLEANSING MILK" in the morning and evening. From time to time I use "Nivea Men" moisturizer...not very often though.ConcernsI used to have pretty bad acne, which was treated with Accutane. I rarely have problems with pimples now, but I think I am mistreating my skin by not taking care of it...at all. Now, my main problems are:Oily forehead and nose areaDry cheeks and chinWeird skin texture below my eyesRednessGeneral SensitivityYellow (?) spotsBig poresDiscoloration around my eyesAlbum with pictures: https://imgur.com/a/wtAKFTWPlease have a look at the pictures and tell me what you think, this is a great community and I can't wait to be a part of it, not just a lurker! Thanks again.

Got embarrassed by an honest child and now I'm trying to fix my face. [routine help]
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have dealt with acne and spots on my face for the past 11 years maybe. It's always been embarrassing but I none of the otc face scrubs or washes I passively tried ever worked.I'm so ashamed of my face that I never wore make up because I felt like that would draw more attention to my horrible skin. Anyway I was talking to a child about two weeks ago and they made a comment about "all those spots" on my face, loud enough for a bunch of other people to hear. Their parent scolded them, which made me feel even worse because now it's clear that everyone notices them and thinks whatever.I immediately searched and found this subreddit and have been reading everything. I went out and bought some things but I'm sure I can do better. My current routine is:AM: -Aveeno brightening face wash (I have been using this on and off for a few months)neutrogena age shield face lotion sun screen 70 spf (got this a week ago leaves an annoying grey csst)PM: - garnier micellar gel wash (since a week ago, I use my hands only or a rag to scrub my face, especially my nose and under my chin)glycerinclean and clear dual action moisturizer (on and off for years)I breakout randomly and absolutely get some pimples during ghee week before my period. I pick them despite how hard I try not to. Sometimes they pop and clear up okay but sometimes they get worse and worse, especially the ones on my jawline. I've noticed that even when I don't pop them though, that there are dark marks left.I live in a tropical climate (always hot and sunny) and also do not have access to a lot of the products mentioned here. skin and products

[Acne] If you have the money to drop hundreds on serums/toners/intoxicated elephants, get a Retin-A prescription instead. That shit changed my life.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Ya'll not to be dramatic but my skin is soooooooooo mf clear after getting on Retin-A. My acne is gone, my hyper-pigmentation is gone, legit transformed my skin in 6 months. Couldn't recommend it enough. It costs me $5 copay but I'm gonna get kicked off my parents insurance in a few more years when I turn 26 and I'll for it out of pocket afterwards, it's completely worth it. It cleared out my skin PLUS there's a mountain of evidence about how effective it is for anti-aging.

[Review] One step closer in my quest to find a dupe for DE's Protini.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Alright, my friends. Ever since that blasted Sephora birthday gift we all got, I've grudgingly fallen in love with stupid Drunk Elephant's stupid Protini. It's instantly plumping and I am a sucker for the gel texture. But I refuse to spend $70 on 1.7oz of moisturizer. It's been sitting in my cart for two months. I just can't do it.So like any well-adjusted not-so-young lady with eclectic interests, I've spent an undisclosed amount of my free time staring at skincare ingredients online, hoping to find something that might compare, but for a humane amount of money. AND I THINK I MAY HAVE FOUND IT.BEHOLD. Thanks to whomever it was on this sub who recommended the Acure line. The Radically Rejuvenating Whipped Night Cream was all of $15 at Target.Take a look at this ingredient comparison. Obviously it's not a perfect match, but I haven't been able to find anything better than this. Both have that sweet peptide complex, and the Acure also has Vitamin C, ferulic acid, and (somewhat ironically for Drunk Elephant) marula oil.The bad news is texture. I don't mind it, but it's not a gel. Here's a side by side comparison (Protini is on the right -- excuse the weird angle, my camera was cranky about focusing on the globs). And here it is not quite rubbed in; you can see that it doesn't sink in very quickly and is much thicker/heavier. I'd compare it to The Ordinary's NMF. Maybe a little bit heavier than that. But! It does have the same immediate plumping effect on my face. My skin feels velvety soft after, and for much longer than the DE. It's definitely more of a night cream, but that's how it's advertised, so I'm not mad about it.For a texture dupe, I've heard that the CeraVe PM lotion is very similar, and while it doesn't have the peptides, it does have excellent ingredients and doesn't break the bank.I think this has staved off my obsession for the time being. Hopefully it helps somebody else.

[personal] don't touch my face!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Today a co-worker didn't believe me when I said I didn't have any foundation on. It all started because of a silly sale at Ulta and I took my lunch break early to swing by and grab Mario Badescu drying cream ($8.50, ayyyye). The most makeup I've ever worn to work at any point has been light mascara. I don't even own foundation/blush/eye shadow/etc.I got back from my Ulta excursion and when my co-workers nosily asked where I had been and found out, they immediately started telling me I looked like I had loads of makeup on... The only difference from my typical day to day appearance was wearing heart hoop earrings (don't usually wear any jewelry) and having my hair down (usually in a pony). For some reason they were absolutely convinced I had gone and apparently done a full face because Ulta is a beauty store and they must only carry makeup.Half an hour later one of the break room co-workers asked me if I'm wearing foundation. I told her no and SHE TOOK HER FINGER AND SMEARED IT ACROSS MY F-ING CHEEK TO CHECK. I was so shocked I didn't react like a normal person would in that scenario. She then told me I looked like I was going on a date and I stupidly mentioned that was last night. She then assumed I had leftover makeup from that on my face and left satisfied with this explanation. Is this the skincare equivalent of not asking before touching a pregnant woman's stomach? I am in disbelief certain people think it's socially acceptable to touch someone's face -- I'm not even close with any of my co-workers.

[PSA] February 2019 the Food and Drug Administration delisted oxybenzone and 13 other petroleum-based UV sunscreen chemicals from being 'generally recognized as safe and effective'
Beauty Tips For Body Care

[acne] Old pharmacy compounding trick for wound healing.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Good Saturday morning All,I thought I would share an old school compounding trick that has helped me whenever I get a bout of stress acne and I get a pustule that bursts. I work in a clinical setting now, but one of the first pharmacists I ever worked with shared this with me years ago in retail.Wash handsWash and sanitize a small container (a contact lens case is great for this)Squirt equal parts (a small amount) of hydrocortisone 1% cream OTC and Neosporin or similar into container.Mix with clean spatula or Q-tip. The mixture will separate over time if one is ointment and other is cream (W/O) and will have to be remixed eventually. I believe Neosporin still has a cream presentation, though.Apply to cleaned affected area to kill bacteria AND bring down inflammation. This isn’t meant for long term use, just as needed. But it works well for burst acne lesions as well as other superficial skin wounds. So you could similarly mix them on the back of your (clean) hand for immediate use.I use after the hydrocolloid bandage has sucked out everything it can, and apply every few hours.

[Personal] I put a dim lightbulb in my bathroom and I've never felt better doing my routine
Beauty Tips For Body Care
During my routine, I can be so scrutinizing and downright cruel to myself. I get so close to the mirror and use up so much energy to tear myself down. I focus on everything that I don't like. I often end my routine stressed, ashamed, and angry at myself and my skin.Almost every night I tell my boyfriend about my skin woes, ask him if he notices this "spot" or "scar," etc. He's of course super sweet and loving about it all, but I'd rather not go through this insecure dance. The truth is that my skin is leaps and bounds happier than it was when I started my skincare journey. But, as many of us do, I have this unattainable and totally ridiculous idea of "perfect" skin, and somewhere inside I feel that I am not ENOUGH unless I attain that "perfect" skin. It's gotten obsessive and painful. I feel a lot of us have a form of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Sometimes this sub can feed that obsessive, toxic cycle. So tonight I put my dim blue light bulb into the bathroom, an idea I saw on this sub a while ago. I'm also trying to keep a greater distance between myself and the mirror. I just want to stop being so mean to myself. So hopefully this is a gentle start.I'm happy to say that my routine was a lot less emotionally painful than usual. I also went through my routine in half the time I usually take.Sending out a the love and positive affirmations to my SCA community. You guys are awesome and beautiful inside and out. Please remember to be gentle with yourselves. We all deserve it.

[Skin Concerns] Am I the only one who doesn't have a "wow" moment with any type of product?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Like the title says, am I the only one? I read so many posts with people's reviews or opinions of how well a product worked or how fast they saw results, instant or other. I've never felt anything has given me the aha! this is the stuff! moment.I've gone into Sephora countless of times, listen to their great marketing, buy stuff, only hoping the product does something brilliant as it say it does. Excited at first, but left deflated afterwards. Products I'm talking about are things like moisturizers and detox cleansers. All the stuff I've used/tried seem a little meh. Not the worst, but it doesn't do what it says it does, or what people says it does for them.Granted, I know everyone's skin is different and everyone will react to a product a differently, but surely I can't be buying only duds, can I?

[Skin Concerns] fading my PIH - all the stuff I've tried!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I made a comment on a post at r/AsianBeauty about fading hyperpigmentation but in fear of having my post deleted lol I named the ingredients I used without naming the products. I had a lot of people ask me on that post about what I used and I'm hoping that to save time from DMing everyone who asked, I thought I could post here instead? (I don't mean to stir tea about the subreddit though lol I love them but I saw people's recs on the same post get deleted before I even posted and I got worried, so...)Just some background info about my skin: I've had some form of acne for the last 15 years and while my skin is better now than it has ever been in the span of that time, I'm extremely prone to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (for reference, my skin is Type 4 on the Fitzpatrick scale). Prior to my current skincare routine, my PIH would often last longer than the pimple it succeeded - often staying on my skin for months at the time. Below I talk about some of the products & ingredients I've tried for my PIH and which ones worked for me/didn't.What didn't work:AHAs: I read a lot of stuff about how they're supposed to be great for hyperpigmentation, but I've never seen results despite how many AHA products I've tried. I find them great for keeping my pores & skin texture unclogged though. My fave AHA product so far is the Cosrx AHA Power Liquid and Hop & Cotton's exfoliant (they do custom skincare so the formulation can be to your preference)Vitamin C: I have only tried a few with various vit c derivatives but I've never seen results. They either do nothing or have irritated my skin to the point that I wouldn't continue usage. I've tried the OST C21 serum, Klairs Vitamin C Drops and Hop & Cotton's customised moisturiserNiacinamide: a really popular ingredient at the moment for PIH but idk if I see discernable results with fading them away. I've tried a lot of stuff with niacinamide that I'm having trouble remembering them all, but my fave so far is probably Stratia's Rewind Essence because at least it felt hydrating. Also contained other ingredients I like too. However, I do feel niacinamide contributes to making my skin tone look even + prevents new PIH from forming as much. It also has a plethora of other benefits outside fading acne marks too, so I ain't mad about using it in skincare knowing it has other uses tooWhat worked for me:Azelaic acid: idk what it is about this wonder ingredient, but it works well for keeping my acne's inflammation down as well as fading my acne scars at a crazy fast rate. I don't have rosacea myself but aZa is supposed to be good for that too. Azelaic acid is available OTC in my country, thank goodness. The one I use is called Azclear Medicated Lotion. Costs about $13AUD for meArbutin: a lot of Asian skincare like lotions and sheet masks seems to contain this product, but the only one that made a dent in fading my PIH as quickly as possible was The Ordinary's Alpha Arbutin + HA serum. Maybe because it contained the max % you could have of arbutin in a formulation (2%) whereas other products I've seen with arbutin never disclose the amount used. Too bad they no longer ship this to my country anymoreRosehip oil: like azelaic acid, this helps with my acne and PIH alike. Oilier finish, of course. I've used a couple of rosehip oil brands out there, but the one I've seen most results with is from The OrdinaryTamanu oil: I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with tamanu oil because when applied all over my face, it breaks me tf out. But applied as a spot treatment, it's pretty decent on acne and PIH as well. Mine is from an Aussie brand called MoogooUsing SPF daily: like I mentioned, my skin tone is very prone to tanning easily when in the sun and I only recently learned how this can affect the rate that my PIH appears and stays on my skin. My sun tans do tend to fade away veryyyyy slowly. I feel that applying facial SPF regularly has contributed to lessening the chances of developing nee PIH and the darkening of current ones. I've tried a lot of sunscreens out there but my fav atm has to be the Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UVWhat I haven't tried:Retinoids: aside from having been on Roaccutane during my late teen years, I've never tried vitamin A in its topical form though. As I get closer to my late 20s, it's something I'd like to soon reap the benefits from though..Lol if you read up to the end of this post, I'd like to offer you my virtual handshake! I get the feeling this is going to be a juggernaut of a post but I do hope this helps someone out there who seems to be at their wit's end about their PIH...

[Misc.] How on earth can I make myself use body lotion more?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Yes, I know this question sounds idiotic. lolI haaaaate body lotion. I always have. I’m super lazy when it comes to applying it, it’s tedious and annoying (esp. now that I’m a bit heavier and have more body to cover) I hate putting it on after the shower or in the summer when I’m hot and sweaty and gross. I hate sitting around waiting for it to soak in. I hate dog hair sticking to me haha. But I really want to start taking care of all my skin, not just my face.Any tips/tricks/ideas to make me hate the process less? I’ll try anything!

[Personal] My face broke out in a pimple-inducing oily rebellion. Here's how I QUASHED it and restored order.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'd like to write a small preface to warn everyone that my ultimate salvation probably won't be compatible with most readers of this sub, as I know most members are women who wear makeup. This might work for women who don't wear makeup or other men like me. Let's begin.=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=The historySince time immortal (A.K.A the year I finished high school and began actually caring about my face) the realm of my face has been ruled by the great Benzoyl Peroxide. Tales tell of a time before the BP regime (when I was a going through puberty in high school) when open, festering pimples and acne would rule, different bands of acne all fighting for space from my cheeks all the way up to my foreheads. Life was truly a mess, but once I actually realized how important having a clean face was for looks-maxing, I fell upon the acne with 5% Benzoyl Peroxide cream (recommended by my parents) and the acne quickly disappeared. So began a long period of peace on my face, where my smooth, white skin would roll undisturbed from my eyes to my nose, around my cheeks and forehead all the way up to my hairline. All was good in the world until about two years ago. I moved to a new country and started a new life. Everything was great. However, over the course of a couple of weeks, I started noticing that I was getting annoying sweat-based acne. Things would be fine in the beginning of the day, but after a couple of hours of activity I'd catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and see a thin sheen covering my face. Strange, I thought, but I just increased the BP and tried to forget about it.However, things did not get better for me. The acne attacks continued, even though I continuously tried to assure myself that all was fine and that I was fully in control, pimples here and there continued to increase. I'd go to the bathroom after a day at work and look at myself in the mirror, no longer seeing a perfect smooth face, but a sweaty abhorrent mess. The light would reflect at an angle, catching all the bumps and redness of acne.Having lived for years lulled into a false sense of security, I did not take this well. I reacted with anger, delving close to the mirror and spending hours in the bathroom popping and popping at all I could, destined to relieve the pus hiding in my pores. The attacks were brutal, and much like indiscriminate government barrel bombs anger the population, my indiscriminate tearing at my face only made it more complacent to the acne rebels.Day by day the acne grew stronger, grew worse. I tried a bunch of different creams, I tried salicyllic acid, I tried exfoliation (which gave me momentary results, a hopeful lull in the combat, a ceasefire... which came crashing down after day 3), I tried changing my diet, I tried cutting out different foods... the results were the same. The acne seemed to be here to stay.Eventually, as it tends to go, I settled into a kind of a stalemate with my face. I maintained control over the high ground, most of my nose area, and my forehead stayed fiercely loyal to the Benzoyl Peroxide regime, never daring to show a single whitehead. The acne rebels, however, gained and held control of the lowlands, down near my cheeks and chin, including some rare attacks in the crevasses of my T-zone. Things settled down, and although I still tried to bombard the rebels with Benzoyl Peroxide every night, instead of turning dry and smooth like the areas under my control, it would turn to a sweaty, sticky mess, only exciting the acne more. Although I tried to put a brave face, I was very hurt. My face was my life, and to see myself lose all self-confidence because of this pesky acne really hurt my quality of life. But life does always move on.Fast forward two or so years and my face was still marked by the deep divide of this civil war. At times, things would get better, there would be compromise, and the acne would subside for a small while. During these times, my whole face would celebrate, and I would forget about the whole issue as if it had never happened. Other times, however, the acne was fierce and angry, and would launch "attacks", periods of time up to a couple days during which I would wake up with new tender cysts and gaping whiteheads. During these attacks, life would be on lock-down mode, and I wouldn't even go outside while I let everything subside.Recently, a couple of months ago, I moved back to my old country. I thought that this would perhaps allow the anti-acne and pro-acne parties currently raging a civil war on my face to reconcile, and that my face could go back to being clear and peaceful. Boy, was I wrong.Somehow, the return to my old country seemed to coincide with a sort of facial Arab Spring. I took care of my face, of my diet, but over the course of a month or so the acne seemed to ramp up in intensity. Those "attacks" seemed to happen more and more often; it became more and more difficult to bring them under control. The areas traditionally immune to conflict and violence began to show signs of whiteheads and blackheads, festering over my face, causing me immense shame.I, as the regime, tried everything. I tried doubling down on the BP. I tried different creams. The success and rapid spread of the acne rebels panicked me, and I even dropped some extremely strong Alluminium Chloride 15% bombs onto my face, but to no avail. It seemed that the end of the last peaceful holdouts from the benzoyl peroxide regime was imminent. After spending hours and hours reading this sub, I realized what had to be done. I declared amnesty with my acne, and decided that from here on out, I would listen to the will of my face instead of fighting a losing battle with it. I would stop all the benzoyl peroxide application and work to rebuild my moisture barrier that had probably been stripped loose from all the BP. I vowed to only use the most gentlest room-temperature water on my face (no more hot water from showers) and no more creams except for a natural moisturizer. The idea was that I was noticing that my face could not remain pristine once I took my morning shower because oil would immediately flood my face and this would cause acne. If I let my face rebuild the moisture barrier then it would have no need to oil excessively, and we could all live in peace. After this proclamation, my face seemed extatic, but it didn't last long. The acne was ruthless, even now that it had won the civil war and annihilated the old Benzoyl Peroxide. Parts of my face that had always been loyal, including my forehead, nose, and upper cheeks, were now overcome with small breakouts. I started seeing my face submerged in oily acne just like in the old days of yore when I was just a teenager. In desperation, I tried using those stupid little blotting strips to remove oil, but of course, they wouldn't make any difference. The acne had won, I told myself, and I didn't know what to do.The comebackAt one point, so extremely frustrated with the acne running loose throughout my face, ruining what had once been a pristine and peaceful land, I sat and I thought about it to myself. What was really going on? The way I understood it, there was actually three different kinds of acne I was experiencing:a) Wet oily acne from not using enough drying products (Like Benzoyl Peroxideb) Dry oily ingrown hair acne from using too much drying productsc) Whatever acne was caused by the thick sheen of stress-oil exuded by my face every day after too long spent outside the shower.Well, A and B should be solvable if I just pit them against each other and find the perfect balance. But C was what really got my in here in the first place. Damn it! Why did it feel like every time I took a shower, my face was completely smooth and dry afterwards, only to become oily throughout the day? Why did water help so-Water helps?Water.WATER!At that point, I knew exactly what had to be done.I went out to my local grocery store and bought a ton of those small spray bottles that you can fill with whatever liquid, usually to water plants. I went back home and filled them up with clean tap water. I would keep one at home, one in the car, and one at my desk in work.Next, I went back to the Benzoyl Peroxide, but not any old BP. I bought a large tube of CVS Health Creamy Acne Face Wash with 4% benzoyl peroxide. I stared at the tube for a long time before bursting into tears. "I'm sorry, Benzoyl, I've betrayed you. You were always my friend, you helped me beat the acne in the beginning, and you'll help me beat it now. I won't ever give you up again". The tube seemed to be sympathetic towards me and bolstered my resolve. At the same time, I bought one of those rough sandpaper-like exfoliating towels for the shower. My plan was now ready to be put into motion. The new regimeAcne types A, B, and C had all been identified and deconstructed. As I assembled my star team of BP, exfoliating rag and water squirters, I knew I was targeting all three elements of those despised rebel groups. The day starts off with a rinse in the shower. Nothing is applied to my face, the water is mostly there to clean off whatever was applied the night before. After the shower, I head off to work. Now, this is usually when acne type C would start coming into play. However, sitting on my desk was a squirty bottle full of clean drinking water. The time is 9:45 AM, and my face is starting to get hot and ruddy. I can feel the oil starting to seep out. I grab the water squirter and aim it at my face, lifting my hair. A couple of pumps and my face is almost dripping with water droplets. I keep working, letting it air dry. 10 Minutes later the water evaporates, taking with it the oil. My face is stunned, and feels dry. I laugh and keep working.Every two hours or so the water bombardement was repeated. I could feel the oil protest, try to take up arms and storm the government buildings, but every two hours like clockwork the skies opened up and hundreds of tiny droplets of water would land, evaporating all the oil. My face felt just like when it got out of the shower. Remember to AIR DRY. Never wipe it up with anythingAfter work and after my run, the sun is setting and it's time for my real shower (not the morning rinse-off). Here is where things get interesting. I let the warm water run off my face, not caring about temperature anymore. I squirt some soothing face wash into the exfoliating rag, lube it up, and start gently working on my face.(Note: 3 weeks of this step and I know exactly which areas of my face to target and which to leave alone. My chin and forehead want no part of this and will break out if I exfoliate them even slightly, but my cheeks need regular exfoliation to stay free of the dreaded OILY FLAKES that cause ingrown hair acne). After gentle exfoliation of my cheeks, I rinse off my face under the water and brush my teeth. Once that's done, I cut the shower, and before my face air-dries, I take the SPECIAL tube of coveted Benzoyl Peroxide- not a cream, but a face wash! It's much more soapy and "wet" than the cream version. I simply apply it to my entire face, and leave it there. Oh no, friends, this Benzoyl Peroxide face wash is not getting "washed" off until morning time! Hahahaha.I flop in bed, turning off all the lights, happy with my day.My face, of course, was shocked. The bands of acne rebels tried their damnest to fight it, but acne type A, B, and C all were targeted and methodically destroyed like an army hunting out insurgents in rat holes. The acne started to recede, slowly but surely. And kept receding until where it is now.Nowadays, I barely actually have to worry about my face at all. I just keep up my regimen, and notice that throughout the day my face actually looks less ruddy and healthier in general thanks to the WATER treatment. Sometimes there is a small ingrown hair somewhere, but I just take care of it and extract it, and it never reveals itself to be a more generalized problem. And that's how I destroyed the Oil Uprising and restored order to my face once more.TL;DRTL'DR: Attempting to restore my moisture barrier and stopping use of BP revealed itself to be useless for me. To fight oily acne-prone face, I had to turn back to benzoyl peroxide (a special version of it) and spraying water on my face every two hours to ward off the oil. Please note that this will not work if you're wearing makeup, as spraying water on your makeup will cause it to run. I have, however used concealer with this method, and as long as you're not wiping the water afterwards (remember, AIR DRY), then the concealer should stay on. With this method, my face basically feels dry and taught 24/7 while not being flaky and dry (because exfoliation).

[personal] today marks one month of eating disorder recovery, therapy, a job interview, annnnnd the worst breakout I’ve ever had.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
as the title indicates, my day is going fabulously! /sI’m in the beginning stages of some intense mental / physical health recovery (thx eating disorder and ptsd), and prior to getting help, my holy grail routine had fallen completely to the wayside.I’m in treatment, I’m eating regularly, and reintroducing my good ol’ routine, and the stress, food, routine reintroduction is making my skin so angry.Cue: jawline, hairline acne I’ve never had, inflamed cheek pores, never-ending chin acne (seriously, where tf are y’all coming from???).I know this is part of the process, I know my routine will kick in, I know it will be worth it.But today is just one of those really overwhelming days where my face feels like it’s at its worst, AND I had to go out and fake super bubbly professional interviewee mode for the final round of interviews at a job I reeeally want while feeling like everyone was staring at every crevice and pore of my skin.ScA, what’d help you through days like this? How has it since been worth it? Any stories of motivation, inspiration, positivity, wishful thinking etc would be so appreciated right now. Sending clear baby skin vibes to everyone 🌸

[PSA] New moisturizer at Trader Joes - Ultra Hydrating Gel Moisturizer
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Just stopped by TJ's and saw this new moisturizer. It didn't even have an official sign on it, just the name and price handwritten in sharpie, so it must be super new.Ultra Hydrating Gel Moisturizer with aloe and green tea extract 75ml - $8.99It's definitely one of their more expensive cosmetics but based on the ingredients it looks pretty good for the price. Luckily TJs has a great return policy so if I don't like it I can get my money back.Full ingredients list:Water (aqua), glycerin, saccharide isomerate, propanediol, ammonium acryloxyldimethyltaurate/VP copolymer, phenoxyethanol, polyamide-5, dimethicone, hydroxyacetophenone, polysilicone-11, squalane, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, laureth-12, ceteryl olivate, glyceryl stearate, ethylhexylglycerin, sorbitan olivate, sunflower seed oil, cetearyl alcohol, lactobacillus ferment, tocopherol, sodium stearoyl lactylate, sodium hyaluronate, milk thistle extract, birch leaf extract, beta-sitosterol, panthenol, squalene, coconut fruit extract, citric acid, green tea leaf extract, sodium citrate. It doesn't have a fancy smell, in fact it kind of smells like a medicinal cream like tret or hydrocortisone, but the smell dissipates on application. It's a very light gel cream and it sinks in fast. It comes in a frosted plastic jar.I am patch testing it tonight so I will update when I get to know it a little better. I'm not great at analyzing the more chemically-sounding ingredients, but I can tell that it does silicones and does not have alcohol denat, which is good for me. I was drawn to the buzzword ingredients like squalane, aloe, lactobacillus ferment, hyaluronic acid, green tea, and other extracts. If anyone has any more knowledgeable insight based on the ingredients, I would love to hear it.

[Personal] Purging suuuccckkksss
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been on Differin for 5 weeks and I am so beyond frustrated. Every time I say "wow this is the worst, my acne has ever been, it can only go up from here" my skin finds a new and exciting way to break out. There was one week where I had amazing skin and then boom 5 huge inflamed pimples show up overnight and just kept coming. I have a history of really deep cysts and closed comedones, which is why I think it took so long for them to come to the surface, but boy are they all coming out at once. It's the worst kind of party on my face. I basically have a beard of inflamed pimples lolTo say my mental health has taken a hit would be an understatement. I'm a young adult in a professional office and my face is quite literally the worst it's ever been in my life. I hate it. I stopped being able to cover it with make-up a few weeks ago so I'm just here in all my inflamed glory trying to avoid eye contact with people.I see my dermatologist again in like 3 weeks and I'm so so hopeful that things will be better by then because I have a big event shortly after. Or at least not constantly getting worse every day would be nice. Part of me really wants to just stop using the Differin, but I'm also still hopeful it'll get better.Anyway, I just wanted to rant for a second to people who would understand. It feels so dumb to cry over my skin, but I'm just so tired of it only getting worse. Any and all stories about how much purging was worth it for you in the end and/or encouraging words are welcome. Wishing clear skin to you all 💖

[Shelfie] I have a TINY bathroom. I present to you... The DOORIE) (It hangs on the door 😋)
Beauty Tips For Body Care
There are lots of skincare routines out there, but this is mine 😊Basic skincare routine for my very dry skin: https://imgur.com/gallery/puyOKj7AM routine:Pond's makeup wipePond's cleansing balm (I know this is technically a makeup remover, but it's gentle and just feels so luxurious)Dickinson's Rose toner (note to self: do not repurchase: smells like 💩)Pond's anti aging lotion (plus Aquaphor if especially dry)PM routine:Basically nothing. I've been sick and am still getting back into the swing of things, so a PM routine is a goal.

[Personal] Anyone else cried over their acne/PIH recently?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just need to vent somewhere, sorry for the miserable post.I’m so fed up. I do everything ‘right’ skincare-wise, and I still look like shit. I hate looking at myself in the mirror. I can’t make eye contact with my family around the house when I’m not wearing make up. I hate having to spend ages covering my acne and PIH up with make up. And I hate waking up every morning and having to check whether I’ve broken out or not. It’s exhausting. My mom looked at me today and I could feel her scanning my face and looking at my skin. She said that she was really worried about it and that I need to ‘sort it out’. I know she didn’t mean it to come across like this, but she made me feel even worse about myself. I spent about 30 minutes crying about it. People say ‘your acne is the most noticeable to you’, but when other people make comments about it...that’s not always the case.My confidence is at an all time low. I know these feelings will pass and tomorrow I’ll be fine, but right now I’m just so frustrated. My skin isn’t even severe and I feel stupid for caring so much, but I’d give anything for clear skin.

[Product Question] Are all 100% Squalane Oil products created equal?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I want to get a 100% squalane oil, and I'm realizing that there are several out there to choose from.I've bookmarked the ones by Biossance ($58/100mL, The Ordinary ($7.90/30mL), Indie Lee ($34/30mL), and Timeless ($14.95/60mL). As you can see, the price differences are a bit erratic.Have any of you used 100% squalane oils from different brands? Did you feel a difference? If a product is 100% squalane, I'm going to assume that you're only paying a different price for branding/packaging (like Biossance and Indie Lee, for instance), and that I should be good to just buy the least expensive one?

[Personal]Fatshamed for loving skincare and not losing weight instead
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Background: In 2014 I got sick (had a tumor in my utero) and 2016 I got sick again (major depression, which I still battle nowadays) and I put up some weight and since then it's been difficult to drop it, even though I already lost 1/3 of it...Anyways, I find out taking care of my skin is one of many ways of self-care and I love investing in products (some which are gimmicky lol) and a woman in my family told me last week "I see all this products and I do not understand why you care so much about your face and nothing about your body" which hit me pretty hard, as I am trying to rebuild myself and for me taking care of my skin and hair is doing wonders for my self-esteem and having this 'routine' keeps me motivated even for working and for my marriage. I just told her "none of your business" tho, but I'm still thinking about it .-.I just wanted to know if anyone in this community has experienced something similar and how did you all deal with that?

[Miscellaneous] What facials/procedures are models and celebrities actually getting?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Whenever a model or celebrity talks about their skincare routine, it's always followed with comments of people saying "take it with a grain of salt because they get so many procedures done to fix their skin". I know this is pretty much true, but what are they actually getting done to make their skin as perfect as it usually is??I am relatively clueless about facials/procedures with professionals, so I am very interested in these top-secret high class skin treatments. Does anyone have insider information? haha

[PSA] neutrogena hydro boost body cream is great if you hate using body moisturizer!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I loathe applying body lotion. I've tried tons of brands but I always feel sticky and weird. I picked up this stuff after seeing a comment here, and it's amazing! It applies easily without much rubbing, and sinks in immediately so no sticky heavy feeeling. It's thin, so i only need about 3 pumps for my entire body.It definitely isn't as moisturizing as some of the cream based lotions, but I can actually see myself applying it every day which makes up for that. There are two versions, regular and sensitive (unscented), I accidentally picked up the regular and the smell is quite strong so I would recommend the sensitive version for sure. I also picked up the hand cream version but I'm not quite sold on that yet.Just wanted to pass this along for people like me who hate body lotion but also hate being scaly in the winter :)

[Personal] People commenting on sunscreen use. Anyone have this experience?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Growing up, I made a habit of putting on sunscreen for outdoor activities and sports. I cared about my skin health and I didn’t really like to tan. Other kids would playfully tease me about it. I knew another kid who burned easily and who wore sunhats and sunblock a lot, and he was teased as well. Looking back, it’s interesting that this attitude towards sunblock can exist among middle and high school. I’d say it’s a maturity thing. Now, however, I’m in my early twenties, and I’ve started using sunblock daily, and I’ve received similar comments from other people but in just a different way it seems. You’ll sometimes hear misinformed things such as “the sun’s not even out” or “it’s late in the day”. Or people will say, “you could use some sun” or “you need vitamin D”. And I have a friend now too who jokes sometimes about it! It doesn’t really bother me, but I just find it interesting that these opinions about wearing sunblock are everywhere and even go into adulthood. Maybe it’s because I’m a guy? But hey man, I live in Florida. Sun protection is important and I’m surprised some people are just either misinformed or don’t seem to think it’s a big deal. To them, when I put on sunscreen, it seems that I’m overreacting I think.Anyway, I’m curious, has anyone else had similar experiences?

[META] Be aware of what folliculitis is ("fungal acne")
Beauty Tips For Body Care
To begin with, fungal acne isn't a thing. Don't be surprised if you bring up "fungal acne" to a dermatologist who then brushes off that term. What you have is a bacterial or fungal infection of the hair follicles.Acne is caused by blockage of the follicles. That's why treatments for folliculitis usually involve some kind of antibacterial or antifungal, usually in creams, shampoos, or pills. It's not semantics to call these by different names. Folliculitis and acne have different causes and different treatments. The Mayo Clinic addresses both acne and folliculitis, and recognizes that folliculitis is visually similar to acne.https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/folliculitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20361634Folliculitis is a common skin condition in which hair follicles become inflamed. It's usually caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. At first it may look like small red bumps or white-headed pimples around hair follicles — the tiny pockets from which each hair grows. The infection can spread and turn into nonhealing, crusty sores.https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/acne/symptoms-causes/syc-20368047Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.Simple Skincare Science has an extremely extensive resource that also talks about which products to avoid and which are recommended.https://simpleskincarescience.com/pityrosporum-folliculitis-treatment-malassezia-cure/Pityrosporum Folliculitis a.k.a malassezia folliculitis is an acne-like breakout often accompanied by itchiness that flares most in areas with a lot of sebaceous activity. (1) This includes the t-zone area of face (especially forehead), shoulders, chest, and back. It’s frequently misdiagnosed as “normal” acne, which is extremely frustrating because this often leads to unnecessary and prolonged treatment with medications like antibiotics that only further exacerbate the condition. (2, 3)Like a pair of researchers put it,“Malassezia (Pityrosporum) folliculitis is a fungal acneiform condition commonly misdiagnosed as acne vulgaris. Although often associated with common acne, this condition may persist for years without complete resolution with typical acne medications.” (4)Allure has a good condensed write up here.https://www.allure.com/story/fungal-acne-pityrosporum-folliculitis-guideFirst of all, fungal acne isn't really a thing. In fact, it's a made-up name for something scientifically called pityrosporum folliculitis, or malassezia folliculitis. No matter what you call it, it's usually due to excess yeast known as malassezia, which is in the same biological classification as fungi, within hair follicles. When this occurs, "it results in inflammation and an itchy, acne-like eruptions," Shereene Idriss, a cosmetic dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City tells Allure.Malassezia actually lives on everyone's skin, Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, adds. However, yeast levels tend to increase during hot, humid weather or when you're sweaty. "High yeast levels promote inflammation, which, in turn, manifest on the skin as pus bumps," Zeichner explains.Additionally, if you suspect you have folliculitis, please for the love of god don't spread it. It is an infection.Acne is not contagious because it's caused by physical blockage of pores.Folliculitis is potentially contagious because it's caused by bacteria or fungi. This can spread through skin-to-skin contact, sharing razors, or through hot tubs or heated pools. If you are concerned you have "fungal acne" and are having difficulty treating it, treat it for the actual skin condition you have. A bacterial or fungal infection.

[product question] how long does it take for Azaelic Acid to show results?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm not expecting to see results 2 weeks, but I just bought TO Azelaic Acid 10% and it comes in a 1 oz container. I don't want to keep buying something if it's not working. I'm trying to be patient and not rush in and out of products. While I am at it does anybody have a sunscreen that they recommend? I have PIH and PIE.

[Personal] Effect of smoking on skin
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey guys,Before i start, i just want to say that i am fully 100% aware of the dangers of smoking and how bad it is for your body and for those around you. I've been a smoker since i was about 16, I am 22 now. I probably smoke half a pack a day, slightly more if i'm drinking (once every 2-3 weeks)My skin is painfully dry and sensitive, even when i use the thickest moisturisers (like Welda skin food) mixed in with rosehip oil, it will absorb and leave my skin bone dry within an hour or two. Apart from the smoking i have a healthy lifestyle, i drink about 2/3 litres of water a day, exercise several times a week and eat a diet rich in fruit and veg with very little dairy and no meat/fish/eggs. I supplement with b12 and d3.I don't have any acne but i do have really large blocked pores pretty much all over my face apart from my jawline and forehead. I also have grey/purple patches and some yellow patches around my nose with i realise is probably linked to the smoking. My morning routine is just rinsing my face with water, TO ha + b3, and then the TO moisturiser mixed with rosehip oil. I do the same as night but i wipe my face with micellar water and rinse it off before the next steps, and often finish off the Welda skin food right before i go to sleep.Does anyone have any experiences or thoughts on the effects of smoking on skin? Have any ex-smokers noticed a improvement in their skin after quitting? I quit smoking when i was 19 for a year and didn't really notice much difference but i'm also not the most attentive person when it comes to skin.Edit: the reason i actually quit smoking the first time was because i felt like my mouth area looked gross. I am lucky to have naturally white teeth (why i still have white teeth is beyond me) but i was paranoid about wrinkles around my mouth.

[Personal] To all you crazy people who suggested I put anti-dandruff shampoo on my face. . . Thank you so, so much!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’ve had insane clusters of under-the-skin pimples on my face for weeks. No amount of love and care was doing anything, and I was really not looking forward to a friend’s wedding this coming weekend. All those photos of my face, which looks worse right now than when I was a teenager. . .It was one of you who suggested I might have fungal acne, and I found thread after thread on this subreddit suggesting Nirozal shampoo. Shampoo? On my face? I thought you were all nuts. But I was desperate, so this morning I lathered it on my face and left it for five minutes or so, then headed out for the day.And oh my god, this stuff works! It’s not even been six hours and when I got home I almost thought I must’ve lost my contacts somehow during the day, because where have all the spots and bumps on my forehead gone! I didn’t even know a product could actually work this fast!So thank you all so, so much. You might suggest some crazy things sometimes, but you know your stuff!

[misc] I used a skincare fridge for a week, here are my thoughts
Beauty Tips For Body Care
https://imgur.com/a/OEBFGaw https://imgur.com/a/c6WaUfdI saw some 'beauty gurus' on Instagram using mini fridges to store their makeup/skincare and I thought it was so cute that I had to get one for myself. I bought mine from Amazon.ca (I'd share the link but I bought the last one and it's sold out) for $53 with taxes. It can fit 6 pop cans or 4 water bottles. It comes with a cord to plug in the wall and has a switch for cool, warm (which I've never tried), or off.Products I have in my fridge:Benzagel 5% Benzoyl Peroxide creamClinique All Over clearing treatmentThe Ordinary Niacinamide and Zinc solutionThe Ordinary Salicylic Acid solutionGlow Recipe Watermelon moisturizerTop shelf:Glamglow Supermud maskLaneige Water Sleeping mask (mini size)Fresh Rose moisturizer (mini size)Origins Avocado sleeping maskOrigins Retexturizing Rose Clay maskBelif Aqua Bomb moisturizer (mini size)Laneige Water Bank moisturizer (mini size)Laneige Water clay mask (mini size)Door compartment:Origins Ginzing Moisturizing Gel (mini size)A bunch of Sephora clay masks I got as samplesI think it makes sense to put your skincare products in the fridge to maintain the longevity of them and to keep them away from sunlight. It feels so refreshing on the skin when applying toner and face masks when they're cold.I love The Ordinary's serums, but the only issue I had with them was that they take a long time to absorb into the skin. Having them in the fridge made them absorb SO much quicker, which can be a bit of a time saver when applying skincare in the morning. I was thinking of buying more expensive serums because I was annoyed at how long they take to absorb, but now I can keep repurchasing cheap serums from The Ordinary. One of the issues I thought I would encounter was the noise level of the fridge. It is a little noisy, it sounds like a bathroom fan but less loud. I keep mine in my bedroom and after a couple minutes you forget it's even on. It's like white noise. I actually think I sleep better with the noise, it's like ASMR lol.I love my fridge and I'll definitely continue to use it. It's not something necessary that you absolutely have to get, but it's definitely nice to have.

[Misc] Unpopular Opinion: Skincare Edition
Beauty Tips For Body Care
CeraVe is overhyped, waiting 20-30 min between products does nothing, & physical exfoliants (that’s right, St Ives) can be extremely beneficial ¯_(ツ)_/¯What are yours?Edit: I’ll also add that I’d choose foods I love over my skin. While I do agree that shitty foods contribute to shitty skin, I refuse to cut out my sacred cheese enchiladas just because dairy may or may not cause acne. I refuse to let my skin hold me back from eating the food I enjoy.

[hair removal] discussion: what method of facial hair removal do the SCA pros here prefer?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’m talking about peach fuzz that women commonly have, hate, and work to remove. And any chin hairs for those of suffering with hormonal imbalances. But also chime in for eyebrow grooming!Shaving daily? Shaving every other day? What kind of razor? Shaving cream? Wax? Threading?

[Skin Concerns] How do I care for the skin around my nails?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I realized recently that as a guy, I was never taught how to care for my nails (let alone my skin, but that’s a different story). I have no clue what I’m doing. Thanks to this sub, my face looks like a freshly waxed vagine, but my nails look like Frosted Flakes. :( Help?I’ve tried doing an at home manicure, but I’m still confused. My cuticles are long and grow onto the nail, and I have lots of hang nails and dry skin around the nail. Recently, I read you aren’t supposed to remove the cuticle because it puts you at risk of infection? Do I push them back? Get rid of them? Whaaat? What do you all do? Thank you!!

[misc] Any1 with rosacea should try this. It has mixed reviews but it’s worked really well for some people, including myself. It’s £14 on amazon or £18 in boots. I’ve been using it for about a week and my nose is still quite red but but the rest of my face is way better and the dryness has gone down

[misc] Ruined armpits
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I realized today that I have destroyed my armpits. I know this will probably be jerked but I am serious and actually upset. All the hair removal and then drying the shit out of them with deo has made the skin there so wrinkly, dry and thin...I usually pay a lot of attention to my whole body but for some reason I never gave much thought to armpits, just put some deo on and call it a day.I spent my Sunday with baby oil and Lanolin on them. Probably ruined my shirt, but I feel so guilty.I want to remind everyone to take care of your armpits...
