[Review] Elta MD UV Shield spf 45 w/ swatches

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have NC25-ish skin tone, and am naturally oily. I’ve tried a bunch of face sunscreens with mediocre tolerability at best. The Elta MD line appealed to me since they use “transparent” zinc for UVA protection. I also like that they don’t have alcohol or fragrance, and their list of ingredients is usually short and no nonsense.Active ingredients in UV Shield: 9% Zinc, 7.5% OctinoxateElta MD says that all of their sunscreens is at least PA+++. A few redditors have gotten email responses stating the the PPD of the UV Shield 16+ (thread 1, thread 2). Might not be good enough for some people, but for normal everyday wear, it's good enough for me.Swatches: https://imgur.com/a/lDg0PLIThis product comes out as a lightweight, thin white lotion that spreads and absorbs easily like a gel. Seriously, no hard rubbing required; I can lightly pat it in or swipe my fingers on my face to blend it into my skin. Because it’s so lightweight, it’s really easy and fast to apply a generous amount. It doesn’t sting my eyes. With ¼ teaspoon, there is an initial white cast that stays on while blending, but is 95% gone within a minute or two. After 5-10 minutes of setting up, I’d say the cast is ~98% gone, because if I really scrutinize up close I can detect the faintest hint of white. However, to me it’s more than passable and I would not feel the least self-conscious wearing this out in public by itself. That said, I think this sunscreen could be more noticeable on people with complexions darker than, say, NC30-35; YMMV on darker skin tones. This sunscreen is moisturizing enough on its own for lazy days but drier skin folks will probably still need a separate moisturizer. It leaves a healthy satin sheen on my skin that’s not sticky or heavy-feeling; it feels like I’ve just moisturized. After lunch my T-zone is shinier but this is standard for me, which is to say this product neither controls oil nor worsens it. Even so, I don’t feel greasy. I can lightly blot my T-zone and reapply if going outside. I haven’t had any pilling issues when layering other products of cream/lotion/powder consistency on top. I’ve been wearing this sunscreen liberally for the past 2 weeks and have not experienced any breakouts or irritation. One con to note is the cost. While it’s certainly not the most expensive sunscreen out there, it’s not the cheapest either, and this product is seems pricey for having a very basic ingredient list. On Amazon and Dermstore, the 3 oz tube is usually $28 and the 7 oz bottle is usually $48. I took the plunge when Amazon had the 7 oz version for $33.50. As it doesn’t have any bells & whistle ingredients, I’m essentially paying for the cosmetic elegance, which I’ve come to accept because cheaper combo drugstore sunscreens in the US seriously suck. If you are interested in this, I would suggest catching the 7oz on sale for the best value. It’s worth noting that even at regular price, this sunscreen is still one of the cheaper options in the whole Elta MD line, and far cheaper than the ever popular Elta MD UV Clear, which is usually $33 for 1.7 oz. I’ve used the UV Clear before, and from what I can remember, the consistency of the UV Clear was thicker and has a shinier finish than the UV Shield. The UV Clear has niacinamide whereas the UV Shield doesn’t. But is niacinamide worth that cost per ounce? For me, no, especially when that ingredient is readily available in many moisturizers and serums. After having tried so many awful products that make me look like a greasy mime, I’m so goddamn excited to have found a sunscreen I don’t have to fight with and can just slap on with my eyes closed. The Elta MD line is so saturated with reviews for the UV Clear that it was hard to find reviews on the UV Shield, so I hope this review helps someone out.Side note on the glorious 7 oz bottle: it makes me feel rich in sunscreen, and one pump really does measure out to be ¼ teaspoon, so no guess & no mess.Happy sunscreening y’all!

[Sun Care] Why aren't any US sunscreens as good as as Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I recently bought the "holy grail" sunscreen Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence because I had read so many good reviews and was admittedly skeptical/curious. And wow, it really is about as amazing as everyone claims. It goes on matte. There's no white cast, barely any sheen, no stinky "sunscreen" smell, and it doesn't sting or feel overwhelming to wear.Maybe you guys have other product recommendations, but I've yet to find any US manufactured products that achieve the same result. Even La Roche Posay had some or all of these problems. Is there some secret ingredient or something that US manufacturers don't have access to? Is it the high alcohol content? I don't get it.

In response to this post and all the comments of people who have missed out in life because of having bad skin.We all deserve to live our fucking best lives. Can we start a subreddit where it’s like: I went swimming anyways, I went camping anyways, I went travelling anyways, I went on the date anyways, I went to the interview anyways. And even if someone said some shit to us, or we felt like shit for a while, we aren’t going to let acne stop us from having the life we want.Strength in numbers right. We can remind each other that we deserve to be fully alive just as much as everyone else does.

[Personal] The flawless Face-Tuned look has ruined my standards for "good skin"

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been trying to improve some aspects of my skin, such as brightness, pigmentation, pore size etc. Even with way less acne than a year ago, I've found new things to hate about my skin that I didn't even notice before. And it's because, behind my acne and without the scarring, I have (dare I say): normal skin. It's just normal. I have redness, pores, bumps, blackheads etc. All of this is normal, but we've been sold this idea that unless your skin is smooth as glass, then something is wrong, and you need to buy product x y and z to fix it. We've been convinced that the standard for "good skin" is actually face-tuned and unobtainable, so you should drop hundreds of dollars and invest your entire self confidence into this unrealistic standard!!thanks for listening to my TED talk

[Misc] Facial mist before/ after moisturizer gives my skin hydration without making me too oily

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello all! I’m an esthetician, so it’s easy to say skin is an obsession of mine.Recently, I’ve been delving into little tips and tricks to add to my skin care routine.I have combination oily leaning skin that’s also somewhat sensitive. The products I use to control the oil occasionally/ the light AHAs I use leave my skin dry in some places. But if I don’t use them, I look like a buttered roll.I was looking for something to really help give me an even looking glow without making me look greasy. Heavy emollients tend to clog my pores and give me acne. For me, this is a light solution that leaves my skin feeling breathable as wellHumectants (which are used in moisturizers to give them their hydration properties) are ingredients that bind to water and deposit it onto the skin.I’ve been reading dermatologist tips that say you should leave a little water on your skin before moisturizing. For some reason, this tends to dry me out even more. I started trying a soothing spray by Avene before and after my moisturizer, and I feel like it makes my skin look rejuvenated and healthy all day!https://imgur.com/a/8RzZBaiIn both pictures, I’m using the same products. The only difference is the added spray in the second photo. I tried to do both photos at the same angle/lighting. They are both taken in the morning on separate days.Neither photos are edited or enhanced using any type of tools, though I’m pretty sure the iPhone X has built in beauty filters.Feel free to leave any questions in the comments! :)

[Personal] I feel like acne does so much psychological damage

Beauty Tips For Body Care
No one in my life understands why I get upset over my skn..I've had acne for 16 yrs, and am about to do my 2nd round of Accutane. I can cover it pretty well with makeup so everyone just acts like I'm being dramatic and my skin isn't bad. I'm mostly bummed bc before I start my 2nd round I am going on vacay in a couple of weeks. I should be happy but my skin is really bad right now and I know I will be so self conscious at the beach. It's so had to look like this for so long and wonder why me, or what am I doing that's so wrong. I just wanted to vent bc I have no one to talk to about it. Everyone just blows me off or I get the "it's just pimples" response. Yeah like you would just love to have uncontrolled lesions in your face for years....right. Esp when you try so hard to prevent it.....

[Acne] Severe Acne! I’m overjoyed! Re: 16 y/o who has severe acne and parents who don’t believe in modern medication

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/bi7laq/acne_help_skin_condition_is_worsening_and_i_cant/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_appI managed to convince my parents that my acne was really bad and that I had to find a doctor. They finally gave in and brought me to a dermatologist. The doctor declared that my acne was severe and needed around 9 months of antibiotics. My Father still had reservations and started asking if my acne had any link to ‘dirty skin’, ‘lack of sleep’ or ‘late nights’. The doctor told him that there were no links and that it’s really just up to stress and hormonal.Normally under such circumstances I think most people would be upset about having to go and medication. Right now I’m really just feeling euphoria, I’m super smug that my parents have finally been disproven and I’m being given proper treatment.P.S. I was prescribed with 1 month of antibiotics, differin gel and topical antibiotics.

[Personal] [Pics] Why touching your acne can come back to bite you later even if you thought it's been resolved

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm 20/m and since I was 14 I've suffered from mostly deeper acne all over my face and all across my back.I'm not going to talk about how touching your acne can make it a lot worse, spread it, and damage it in the short-term (which it definitely did), but what can happen after a few years.I used to touch any blemish I thought was poppable until it popped, or bled too much. I wanted it off my skin as quickly as possible. And whenever I was successful, I found this got the developing acne off my face quicker than waiting for it to come to any head or let my body deal with it (as my acne was quite deep and would rarely surface). I was extremely lucky considering how many times I massacred my skin that I had minimal or no scarring, just some discolouration. Sometimes the same spots would reoccur annually, but still no scarring.First off, if this is you and you haven't visited a proper dermatologist. Do so immediately. After years, I finally went, got evaluated and recieved specific antibiotics (not Accutane surprisingly which I had another GP who only specialized in skin reccommend), and I haven't had a major infected spot I could pick since. It is critical you get treated ASAP, and you will understand why in my next point. After years of trauma to my face because of this acne and picking, I thought I was relatively well off for months. All bumps that remained from my acne picking flattened off after several weeks. Until one morning another bump on my forehead started forming. I let it do it's thing for a week until I tried squeezing it, but I realized this was not one I could pop through the skin. It got irritated and only grew in size. I was completely surprised as by this point I would always be able to pop it in some way. I let it be because it was just under my hairline and barely noticable. After a month, it was just a painless bump I didn't really care about. That was until my body decided that it was going to produce a mountain range on my forehead from previous acne spots. Within a few weeks my forehead looked like this. They have only been fluctuating in height and grew in diameter since.Because of previous and continuous acne trauma, my body formed cysts on my forehead. They have been here for half a year now and my dermatologist says they are here to stay. He will not take them out as he can cause scarring that isn't worth it. Not only does the junk causing the bump need to be removed, but the 'acne sac' needs to be cut out. The only path I should take if I want to get them out is through plastic surgery because of their location on my face, costing hundreds of dollars. And that doesn't prevent another bunch from showing up somewhere else in the future.TL;DR Don't pick at your acne. If you have deep swelling acne visit a doctor, otherwise the damage you cause underneath may always remain.

[PSA] Doxycycline ruined my digestive system.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I had cystic acne when I was a teenager. I started developing acne super young, like 12 years old and it just got worse, it seemed, daily. I cried about it often, got made fun of for it all the time, was super depressed. My parents finally took me to a dermatologist that had a year long wait list. Right off the bat I was prescribed 100mg of Doxycycline 2x per day (so 200 mg total). Once in the morning, once at night. It worked fantastically. My skin became clear and I thought I was on the right track. The only issue I had was if I didn’t take it with food (huge mistake) so I rarely ever did that and if I did, it was purely from forgetting to eat breakfast.Fast forward 10 years (yes TEN), I was still on doxy because I was afraid if I came off that my acne would return. However, my dermatologist also never recommended coming off. We had our appointments every 6 months, she would say my skin looks amazing, and we’d schedule the next appointment. Well I started developing severe severe GI issues. Constant diarrhea if I ate anything other than plain carbs. Couldn’t ingest any fat or protein. Basically ate bread with jelly, plain rice, dry cereal, bananas. Was sick all the time. Missed work all the time.Went to a GI doc who couldn’t find anything initially. Did a colonoscopy (I was 24), didn’t find much. No ulcerative colitis, which is what they thought it was. They considered removing my gallbladder right before my wedding when I was 25, but I asked them to hold off. Couldn’t even eat the food at my wedding and I was the thinnest I’ve ever been because I literally couldn’t eat anything.Came home from my honeymoon and decided to keep my standing appointment with internal medicine before scheduling gallbladder removal. Finally, after seeing my PCP, GI doc, endocrinologist, and my OBGYN about these horrific digestive issues, the internal medicine doc was the FIRST one to ask me how long I had been on doxycycline. I said 10 years. He told me I needed to wean off immediately. Turns out the doxy had killed all the good bacteria in my digestive system. None of the other doctors had ever asked me about this medication even though it was present in my shared chart. I also never considered the possibility that it was the culprit.I’m now 29 and have 0 digestive issues. None whatsoever. Which feels so amazing. I just wanted to share this experience because I know it’s still being prescribed for acne. Please please please be diligent about following up with how long you should be on it. Question your provider, do your own research. I wish I would have. A friend of mine, who was in medical school at the time, told me that they only prescribe doxy to Lyme disease patients for 21 day cycles at maximum and here I was on it for 10 years. Ugh.

[Acne] The Pore Project: An introduction Into My Fight With Poor Skin And My Plan To Fix It.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
IntroductionWhy hello there! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my little project here. I am sure you are wondering just what in the heck this is all about and who the eff I even am. So let me tell you!.Well this post is really to establish a starting point in my little project. A before, before the after if you will. As well it is here to give some background as to who I am, what I am doing with this whole project and where I want it to go.Who am I? I am a 29 year old Male Mechanic from the great white north of Canada. I am a tinkering sort of fellow with some new found time on my hands, so I thought what better way then to take care of myself.. starting with my skin!A little bit of background on my skin and skin type. Typically I have always had extremely oily skin, and wide open pores (you will see how bad in a second). This means those bad boys get PACKED. Well now I am a mechanic and my skin goes through HELL on just about a daily basis. Grease, dirt, oil, chemicals. You name it, it's probably packed in there. On top of things, I work nights so my skin doesn't get much sunlight, I drink very little water and drink way to much coffee. All of this leads me to have terrible skin! Now it's about time I do something about that! The ProjectSo what the heck is the project anyway? Well The project is to document my progression through my skincare. Starting off with the basics. I will be testing out a wide range of products over a lengthy period of time and post the results, as well as my thoughts and opinions throughout the whole process. I will also take very revealing and intimate photo's for you all to see. On top of that I have found a way to go deeper... Microscopically deeper. I have purchased an inexpensive microscope that allows me to get uncomfortable close to my pores so I can see just exactly what each product is doing. How it effects my pore size. how cleansers work at pulling out the crud, as well as how other products or processes effect the skin. What We Are Working WithTo start off, the photo's... Warning... It is graphic. My Face Week 1 - This is without any regiment in place. I used very basic all purpose moisturizer. Due to my job, I pretty much exfoliate every day. This has probably caused a lot of damage to my skin as well. Now To Go... DEEPER- This will give you an idea on just how packed those bad boys are! Each photo is labeled on the bottom and are from the average part of that section. As you can see, there is A LOT of work to do here BUT, I don't want to rush things. I want to give people an in depth idea of just how effective each step of the process is. So, onto the regiment. The RegimentI am starting off with the basics. Very basic. A simple wash morning wash and daily moisturizer. I also went with a very light cleanser as I feel this would be what most try out to start, and an all around moisturizer. If you are wondering about the products then Here They Are.I went with Citaphil All skin type products. This is again because I feel like it is a very generic and safe starting point that a lot of people can start on. Citaphil is also found in my local drug store so it is more likely to be readily available to you as well. There is no SPF included in my regiment because, well... I don't really have to worry about that lol.The duration of each product used will probably very a bit. My goal is to give each product at least a month of use so I know definitively if it is doing anything or not. That said, if i don't like a product or if the majority of you want me to try a different product then I will be open to it.On top of this, I will be increasing my water intake. Right now I would estimate I consume maybe 2-3 glasses of water a day. I would like to increase this to at least 1L a day for now. I will also be increasing my bedding washes from once a week to bi-weekly. Other then that my diet, daily habits, etc will stay the same for now. If i make any changes I will include it in an update. The UpdatesMy plan for updates is to post here once a week. I will try and make it for every Monday. I do work on a rotation so this could potentially skew the update dates. My current rotation is 4on and 4off so I should still be able to post once a week sometime during the weekdays IF it has to be pushed back.Updates will include as much information I can provide for you. I will try and keep notes on how my skin feels. What effects I feel it having. My opinions and thoughts. As well as many more of those glamorous photos! lolWell I think that is about all the information I have for now. If you would like more updates, I have made an Instagram account that I will be posting to. (I am not trying to self promote but if mods still think it's against the rules then please DM and I will delete.)I will see you all on the next update! Stay hydrated!

[Misc] Never go to bed without moisturizer!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have pretty oily/combination skin which stays relatively clear aside from some nasty cystic spots I get when my hormone and/or stress levels change.Last week I developed multiple cystic spots at once which is unusual for me, AND I had a ton of small breakouts all over my chin. My skin looked worse than it has for about a year. I know it wasn't that bad but it wasn't normal for me.Around this time I was running out of my usual moisturizer and ended up not even using it before bed for like a week. My spots were painful so I wasn't motivated to keep touching my face. Also notable that I was still using my normal spot treatment at the time (benzoyl peroxide).Well two days ago I noticed my skin was super dry so I used a hydrating mask overnight and by the morning my spots were SO much less inflamed! Since then I've been moisturizing religiously and my skin is already almost normal again.I know a ton of people here would never forget to use moisturizer before bed but holy shit, if you've been slipping and your skin is breaking out more than normal lately, STOP BEING LAZY! Hope this helps someone.

[misc] Protip re: sealing down (covering up or hiding) flaking skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been using 0.1% Retin-A Micro (max-dose tretinoin microsphere) gel nearly every night and occasionally get super flaky if I'm not diligent about moisturization. Looked particularly terrible after applying makeup today and attempted this trick on a whim with PHENOMENAL success. It's now over 12 hours later and I am still flake-free!What I did (items marked with an asterisk* may be unnecessary--YMMV and I still need to experiment!):Complete usual AM routine (clindamycin lotion + sunscreen--Missha All-Around Safe Block Soft Finish Sun Milk)Pat on silicone-based primer* (I used Missha Layer Blurring Pore Cover Primer just to use it up--it's not fantastic but is more "solid" and "fluffy" as primers go, similar to Benefit Porefessional)Apply POWDER foundation with a brush* (alas, this is probably the best way to look ridiculously flaky)HEAVILY MIST FACE WITH WATER-BASED FACIAL MIST (I used Missha Super Aqua Mineral Water Mist, which includes tiny amounts of glycerin and silicones, but I suspect any makeup-setting spray might also work. The goal here is to apply enough to flatten out your flakies via the magic of H2O surface tension, but not so much that you generate droplets that cause your makeup to run--I'd do this before applying non-waterproof mascara!)RAPIDLY DRY FACE WITH FAN (I vigorously fanned my face with a hand fan but a blowdryer on low heat/cool and low speed or a ceiling/electric fan on high might also work. I think NikkieTutorials once mentioned this as an effective trick for makeup-setting purposes?)Fool everyone into thinking you're a MASTER OF HYDRATIONEdit: DON'T TOUCH YOUR PERFECT FACEI really wish I discovered this while I was on isotretinoin (Accutane), but better late than never! I also should have taken B&A photos but I was way too excited about this discovery to not immediately share!I'd love to hear if you've tried something similar and/or what other tricks for successfully dealing with flakies ya'll have!Edit: The primer (or any intervening silicone product) might actually be necessary, as it protects your sunscreen from the water-based mist!

I saw a few Asian Biore products online. I haven't seen anything in stores, yet. They seem to be only selling cleansers and makeup removers. I really hope Ulta starts carrying the Biore sunscreens!

[Acne] Benzoyl peroxide contact therapy has saved my skin.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've struggled with acne throughout most of my twenties (now closing in on 30) but within the past couple of years it had gotten much worse. A new cyst would pop up on my forehead every couple of weeks and then take weeks to heal, leaving behind scars (some indented) and hyperpigmentation. In the past, I had tried benzoyl peroxide 2.5% as a leave-on treatment overnight. It did work, but resulted in horrible irritation and chemical burns. So I ruled out the use of benzoyl peroxide when my acne started to flair up these last couple of years. Instead, I approached it with a "throw everything at it and see what sticks" approach. Azaelic acid, salicylic acid, different moisturizers, suncreens, and oils; you name it, I tried it.I was becoming desperate, so I started using Retin-A last year. Even with Retin-A, my forehead was still breaking out in cystic acne. A few months ago I came across an article on Simple Skincare Science that recommended using benzoyl peroxide as a contact treatment for those who are unable to tolerate it due to irritation. This basically means leaving the benzoyl peroxide on for a few minutes and then rinsing it off.Since using the benzoyl peroxide as a contact therapy, I've been 95% breakout free for 3 months. I still get the occasional white head on my cheeks, but I've zero cystic pimples (!!!).I'm still kicking myself for not finding that article and trying this sooner. I could have saved myself from a lifetime of scars (I'm not sure if the indented areas will ever fade :( .....)I just wanted to post this for those of you who are unable to tolerate benzoyl peroxide as a leave-on treatment. I hope you find this method as effective as I have. Here's my full routine:AM:-Cleanse with Vanicream cleanser-Apply benzoyl peroxide to entire face (currently using Acne.org benzoyl peroxide, but any will do), leave on for 3-5 minutes, and rinse.-If not going out into the sun, apply Vanicream Lite lotion.-If going out, only apply Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk sunscreen.PM:-If wore sunscreen, wipe with micellar water-Cleanse with Vanicream cleanser-Retin-A 0.5% approximately 5x per week-Vanicream Lite lotion-Squalane oil if used Retin-A

[Misc] Finally found a great tinted mineral SPF 50 for everyday use!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Recently, in my late-20s I became obsessed with using proper SPF and since then have been on the hunt for an everyday mineral spf (preferably 50) that wouldn’t break me out, leave a white cast or be too greasy. So far, my favorites were La Roche Posay Athelios 50 and 60, both tinted and non-tinted. I found Australia Gold Botanical Sunscreen SPF 50 Tinted and let me tell you, it’s so great. I’m not sure how the tint would work on those that are super pale, I’m olive complexion. It’s super affordable. Available on Amazon, Walgreens, etc; around 12-13$ and leaves skin looking nice and satin. I do love La Roche Posay, but as someone who loves slathering SPF on everyday, for 1.7oz the price can be steep at times for most. Supegoop, LRP and so many other expensive brands seem to dominate the market, so I think that’s why I missed out on this one so long. I just wanted to leave this here for anyone looking for suncare prior to summer’s arrival.

[Personal] Acne woes + job seeking happiness!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey all, Just a little reminder that, although scary, it's often worth it to put aside your acne insecurities and go for any opportunity you get presented with, despite how your skin may look that week. I'm currently starting out on tretinoin 0.01%, one month in, skin looking terrible, and applying for countless biology research positions. This week I had a rough jaw breakout, maybe due to caffeine, stress, and lack of sleep (it's finals week!). I finally secured an interview for a position but I feared that, non only I wasn't a qualified enough candidate, that my acne would make me look younger, and immature. Although these fears probably arent thoughts that go through the mind of any qualified HR position, they feel valid at the time, and I'm sure many of you can relate to having extra stress (and acne!) during busy times with lots of commitments like this. All this to say, I ACED the interview!! I feel amazing! And acne did not once come up on my mind! This post may be a rambling mess, but I wanted to share this genuine self esteem boost despite any skincare worries. Thank you ScA!

[Product Question] Are lasers the only option?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey! I went to a dermatologist today! I have a red face, with really red cheeks. When I asked her about this I was told the only thing that could fix it was laser treatment. However, she makes a percentage of the money from the laser treatment when she recommends a specialist. Is this the only real option, or would something like AzA work? Thanks!

[Misc] Fireside Chat thread: touching base, discussing community and belonging - and plants!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey everyone, and welcome to the Fireside Chat!If you've celebrated, we hope you've had a great Easter, Passover or Mid-Sha'ban. And if not, we just hope you've had a good weekend :)We find ourselves around a crackling campfire - the weather is nice, so we've moved outside. No Nick Offerman this time, but it's pleasant nonetheless. A good place to catch up.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E77jmtut1ZcThe Fireside Chat threads are an informal place for mods and users to interact. Our announcement posts are usually pretty official and practical, and don't leave much room for casual chats. That's why we created the Fireside Chat threads; we'll keep you up to date with what's going on, talk about the sub, give you the opportunity to ask questions, and we'll get to know each other a bit better :)It's been a while since our last Fireside Chat thread - we didn't have much to report on in terms of projects (yet!). But then we realised: that's fine! We can still touch base with you all and enjoy this space of relaxed and pleasant chatting around the campfire. Hearing a hooting owl and the crackling of the logs. Enjoying our time together.Discussion topic: community and belongingWhat I'd like to talk to you about today - so our discussion question - is about community. There are lots of communities, both online and offline, that you might feel part of. A subreddit community like ScA, a discord server, a religious community, a sports team, a theatre club, a non-profit organisation… I'm really curious to know more about how all of us experience these different communities. So our discussion question is: what communities do you feel you really belong to? What does it mean for you to belong to that community? Do you remember when and how you started to feel like you belonged? How did that impact how you felt and acted? It's also possible you participate in a variety of communities but you don't feel true belonging there. If that's the case, what's that experience like? How does it feel to participate in those communities where you don't feel you fully belong? What is the barrier to feeling fully immersed in that community? If you'd like to answer the discussion question but feel uncomfortable to do so publicly (hi lurkers!), I've got you covered - click here for an anonymous google formOff topic chat: plants!I had a great talk last week in General Chat with people about their plants - people were recommending each other plants they might like and it was such a fun conversation, so I thought we'd continue for a bit! Here's the beauty I bought last week, but I thought he was kind of lonely, so here he is with a new friend! I couldn't help myself... Also plants need friends, right?I'd love to know about your plants! Do you have any? Or, if you're like me, have you killed any? I love my spider plants, they survived so much neglect - but not every one of my plants has been that resilient...If you don't own any plants, maybe you like to buy flowers? Or perhaps there a tree in your garden or neighbourhood that you really like? Please tell me about your plants! Bonus points for pictures :)

[Review] Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream for dry & sensitive skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Weleda Almond Soothing Facial CreamPrice: ~$18 - $28 for 1oz (30ml) Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Hydrolyzed Beeswax, Prunus Domestica Seed Oil, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Lactic AcidSkincarisma breakdown Special Info: fragrance-free, cruelty-free Review: This guy showed up in the Whole Foods bag, which is great because I’m always looking for new moisturizers to try! Weleda claims that this is a rich, deeply moisturizing cream for dry & sensitive skin - so, right up my alley. Ingredients of note: Short & sweet, it’s mostly all good stuff, easy to tell if there’s something in here your skin isn’t fond of. Beeswax & oils are always cool.Alcohol is pretty high up there though, no? A bit weird for a cream, but alcohol doesn’t typically bother my skin and I’ve had excellent luck with Skin Food (which also has alcohol pretty high in the list). I assume it’s necessary for improving the cosmetic acceptability of these thicker, more occlusive formulas (or maybe not, idk, I’m not a cosmetic chemist). So while my skin doesn’t mind alcohol, it’s something to be aware of. Texture & scent: Thick, smooth cream. Negligible scent. Packaging: Aluminum tube, nice Experience: For reference, my skin type is overall ‘normal.’ Dry in the winter, oily in the summer. I have a bit of irritation going on at the moment, but generally my skin is pretty hardy.Right off the bat, this cream is basically everything I’ve been looking for - it’s a luxe, smooth cream that you can immediately tell will be Very Moisturizing. To me, it’s very quintessential night cream - super smooth and pretty damn shiny.BlopAnd it certainly lives up to its claims - I’ve found this to be more moisturizing than most of the moisturizers I’ve tried. It’s very much an oily cream - thick & shiny - and I imagine this will be great for anyone who notices a lot of benefit from using facial oils.SchmearDespite the alcohol content, this is only moisturizer that hasn’t caused any tingling on super irritated areas - Trader Joe’s, CeraVe, First Aid Beauty, etc. all cause just a tiny bit of sting if my skin is irritated, but nada with the Weleda. The gentleness is honestly impressive, and I can see this cream being suitable for those with sensitive skin who have had trouble finding something that works for them.Shiny! It certainly feels like it’s bringing all the best qualities of oils & occlusivity together in a beautiful cream format - if I could layer this on constantly, I’d never have need for another moisturizer. Which brings me to my first minor gripe -I can’t layer this over anything. Everything freakin gunks up and pills. I like to layer a couple moisturizers/lotions when my skin is feeling dry and this doesn’t play well with any of them. Thankfully it does layer perfectly well over itself, but as someone who usually has at least an additional layer going on in the PM, pilling is not a quality I’m fond of. I imagine this is largely dependent on what products you use, and user error is probably a huge contributing factor (for the life of me I can’t manage to apply oils after moisturizer like apparently everyone else can), but it’s something I had to mention. But my main gripe is the size - 30ml!! For a cream!!!! I don’t know man, 30ml is fine for a serum, but creams are thick and goopy and I apply a lot of them. As I mentioned, I got this in the Whole Foods beauty bag, and figured it was a nice lil sample. Of course it was only after falling in love with the formula that I realize Weleda sells this shit at $30 for 30ml. Other sites (like iHerb) offer more manageable prices, but even then I want a full size moisturizer to be more than just 1oz, yknow? This cream is fantastic, but not fantastic enough that I can justify replacing my other (more affordable, larger sized) moisturizers with it.But really, that’s a personal thing. I imagine this cream would be fantastic for anyone with dry and sensitive skin, and I’d highly recommend trying it out if it’s piqued your interest. It does what it says it will, and it does it quite well! tl;dr: Fantastic thick, smooth cream that’s highly moisturizing; quite oily; seems like an excellent choice for dry and/or sensitive skin; 30ml is a dinky lil size for a cream imo Other reviews: It’s important to read multiple reviews if you can find them! As always, ymmv - my experience will likely be different from someone else's.Unfortunately I couldn’t find many reviews on this, but here are some tiny snippets anyway. Interestingly both mini-reviews mention using it as a day cream, which I can’t fathom - it really is quite shiny!Review: Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream - geekskinTop Natural Face Moisturizers - Gurl Gone Green Rating: 7.5/10

[Review] SKIN AQUA Super Moisture Milk Pink

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I couldn't find really any reviews for this version of the moisture milk sunscreen before I bought it so I wanted to put some thoughts out there in case anyone else is debating.I have used the regular yellow bottle version daily for close to a year and love it. I get it on Amazon but it hasn't really been available for a reasonable price for a while now. They did have the pink bottle version on Prime so I took a chance. For anyone wondering, the pink version is basically exactly the same as the regular, except that the liquid is pink. Texture, application, feel after applying is all exactly the same. The pink tint is kind of alarming at first and I feel like I have to rub it in a lot more than the regular kind but once it's fully rubbed in, you really can't tell a difference. So far, I don't have a preference. I will probably just buy whichever is cheapest/easily available.Another thing to note: the gel version breaks me out terribly. Both milk and milk pink have not.

[Sun Care] Pat away excessive sunscreen shine?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Does anyone know if I should gently pat away the sunscreen to remove its shine?I have two sunscreens I'm testing, Biore Watery Essence and Shiseido Senka, both SPF 50. I apply a generous amount 30 minutes after moisturizing but even after it sets in it still leaves my face shiny (both of them). I found out that very gently patting with a tissue removes the shine. My question is, will patting away this shine basically remove the sunscreen/render it ineffective? I would really like not to have a shiny face, and it looks like this method works very well. Thanks!

[Sun care] What sunscreen do you use for outdoor exercise?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone, I run for about an hour in the morning and have tried out lots of different sunscreens! On my face I currently use Oasis Sun SPF 40/PA ++++ (oasisbeauty.com/collections/oasis-sunscreens/products/oasis-sunscreen-spf-40-sport). I'm based in the U.S. and get this shipped in from New Zealand -- the reason I'm using it is that my main goal with sun protection is preventing signs of aging. I don't trust the UVA protection in American sunscreens -- avobenzone is too unstable, and zinc oxide doesn't protect against the FULL spectrum of UVA. I first learned this from Lab Muffin (https://labmuffin.com), but you can see it in sunscreen charts showing which filters protect against which wavelengths of UV light. The Oasis sunscreen has zinc oxide as well as chemical filters that protect against UVA that are not available in the U.S. It's pretty white casty, but I don't care whatsoever if I'm just exercising. And on my body I've been sticking to the Banana Boat Simply Protect Sport SPF 50 for a while. I like that it relies on zinc oxide instead of avobenzone for UVA protection, even though I wouldn't consider it robust enough for my face. On the rest of the body, it's OK. I've also tried American zinc oxide only sunscreens but I don't like how thick and sticky they are -- they can be hard both to apply and to wash off.I don't think it's necessary to exclusively choose sunscreens labeled "sport" for working out, at least in the U.S. I consider any American sunscreen that says water resistant for 80 minutes to serve that purpose. So I've used e.g. Neutrogena Sheer Zinc for running -- not marketed for sports, but it's water resistant. Does anyone know if there's a distinct advantage to the "sport" label? What have you guys tried out for outdoor exercise? And any other tips for avoiding the sun while working out? I always run with a lightweight running hat if the sun's out. I also try to go in the evenings after sunset, but during spring/summer that gets to be too late.

[Anti-Aging] Skin looking older after quitting or pausing routine after only a month? :(

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm in my early 20s and genetically my family has been blessed with pretty good skin. My mom for example is out in the sun a lot, never wears sunscreen and somehow her skin still looks great. I always figured I don't have much to worry about in this regard.Regardless of that, I decided to try a simple routine of using vitamin C serum (this one) and a moisturiser (this one) every night before bed. Applied to face, neck and hands (since I always had a little extra). Now, I don't care about marketing claims and all that, but I spent a lot of time deciding what products to buy based on ingredients. I read a lot about a lot of ingredients. I wanted to avoid anything questionable and poorly researched (which sadly is pretty impossible, yay for under-regulation of cosmetics) It probably took me a month before finally compromising on buying those two products. After a bit, my skin was a little smoother and that was about all that I could notice different. But that's ok, I wanted to keep my skin looking nice long term, and smoothness was nice. After less than a month, I stopped using it for two days straight. I got lazy, honestly. I didn't expect much of a difference except my skin maybe being a bit less smooth. But nope, it looked worse than ever before. Suddenly I got fine lines where they didn't exist before. So I went back to using moisturiser and vitamin C again, and the fine lines went away after about 2 days. Well mostly? The new fine lines aren't visible to anyone but me after using the routine again. But I can see that they exist now.So then, to ensure I wasn't just being crazy, I tried it again after a week. And the same thing happened after just a day of not using the stuff. Fine lines on yet again new places and generally worse looking skin. I stopped using it on my hands and my hands don't look awful, but definitely worse (I didn't notice much benefit on my hands in the first place). So in all honesty, I regret ever trying this out. I don't know what's going on, but it looks like my skin got addicted and can't take care of itself anymore. Or that the routine is secretly making my skin worse and only appearing to make it look better (which would be brilliant for skincare companies, no?).I do wear sunscreen outside, but I don't consider it a part of the routine, as I don't go outside much anyway. And I understand that it takes some adjustments. I could expect dryer skin or breaking out,or redness, or whatever, anything adjustment-related. But my skin looking straight up older is not what I expected. I've heard people say before that stopping skincare makes your skin look worse than it would've looked without it, but I never assumed there was much behind this claim and I wouldn't expect it this fast either way. Now it's hard not to believe that.My thought of of course that maybe that's just a part of ageing. But it's too early, especially considering my family history and that I always took care of my skin. I stay out of sun, I drink only water and don't eat junk food. I don't crease my face much because I'm fairly expressionless when alone and spend a lot of time alone.I also considered that maybe I just didn't notice those before. But I am very particular (to say the least) with my face and I knew of all of the features of my face. Tiny hair patterns, almost invisible freckles, two under-eye creases - which never bothered me, I thought they are cute - but they suddenly become 3 after I stop routine? It would be impossible to miss.If I sound upset, I am. Not at you or anyone in particular, just at the situation I'm in now. Everyone is super excited about skin care and it basically became a religion at this point. So I thought I would give it a shot, what do I have to lose? But nobody warns you that once you start, it's a forever thing. Do we even know enough of what skincare products do? Based on how under-researched everything is, it's hard to believe that. What if I want to have a lazy day or two? What if I run out and not plan ahead? What if I just want to have my face free of chemicals so I can make out with my boyfriend (vitamin C tastes gross)? I can't do any of that apparently now. Ever again? What kind of life is that?Skin looking 5% better with and 50% without is NOT a good compromise. I just wanted to take care of my skin a little bit, feel good. Instead I've been feeling sad and anxious. I was pretty happy with my skin before and now I'm pretty miserable. So what should I do Reddit gals and guys? How do I go back to normal with out turning into a mummy? Am I doing something wrong? Is there some universal knowledge here that I missed? Is my skin messed up forever now? Did any of you ever tried to just stop using and have experience to share? Is there something ingredient-wise that I missed?I'm sorry for the long message and question spam. I let my skin down and I don't know what to do.

I went to Walmart thinking, “This will certainly not work, but it’s worth trying for under $10.00.” I am so happy I gave it a shot, because 90-95% of my acne is gone.My routine (forgive me, I’m on mobile): - Day and night - wash with H&S shampoo followed by washing with La Roche-Possay Effaclar “Medicated Geo Cleanser 2% salicylic acid and acne medication” - Every other day(ish) - La Roche Possay “clarifying solution with 0.5% Salycylic acid acne medication + 2% glycolic acid.” This is intended to tone and target clogged pores. - Spot treat over night or 3-4 hours during the day with Mighty Patch hydrocolloid bandages. This brand sells them in dots/circles, which I cut into 6 smaller pieces because I rarely have breakouts that requires the entire circle. - Occasionally, I spot treat with the La Roche Passay “dual action acne treatment 5.5% benzoyl peroxide acne medication + 0.4% micro exfoliating LHA.” — I think that this one might be giving me issues, so I’ve started testing it out with periods of on and off use. - I use CeraVe or Equate moisturizer when my skin is feeling dry.. It’s actually lost at the moment which has given me an excuse to look for alternatives.A quick background - I’ve been dealing with this for about 12 years. I was at my worst 4-5 months ago. My cheeks were covered in small, brightly colored pimples along with painful cystic acne. My self confidence was at an all time low and it began affecting my social life (I even avoided going to the grocery store.) This week, I’m taking cute selfies & loving my not perfect, but greatly improved skin. :)
