[PSA] Don't buy tamanu oil from Garden of Wisdom

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I don't know how many people will find this useful, but I figured I'd mention it anyway. About a month ago I made this post. I got my tamanu oil from Garden of Wisdom. It looked and smelt off, but I figured it was my fault for letting it sit in my beauty closet for so many months. I still believed GoW sold good tamanu oil, so two weeks ago I ordered a new one with high hopes. I opened it today for the first time. Same exact thing. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has experienced this or something similar with GoW.

[Acne] [Personal] I went to the gym today WITHOUT MAKEUP because of this sub. Thanks, you guys. Seriously.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have been in a really bad place lately because of my skin, as you can tell from my previous post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/bscbx5/acne_personal_my_acne_is_not_just_ruining_my_life/) . (hopefully that linked worked?)The comments I received on that post really helped. The advice was mostly things I already told myself, but for some reason hearing it from other people (other than my husband lol) was more convincing. I decided I would try really hard to improve my confidence, despite my appearance, and take one step at a time. Today's challenge was going to the gym sans makeup (I have been going less and less until I just stopped going a while ago... all because of my acne). I have to admit, I went earlier than I usually do so that I didn't have to see/interact with any of the usual people I see, but I did it! And it helped to stand faaaarrrrr away from any mirror so I didn't have to look at myself lol. Although I tried to avoid any eye contact/looking around, I didn't notice anyone looking at me funny, and that made me feel awesome. No one cared! And I tried not to care... I at least cared a little less. :)I just wanted to thank the supportive, awesome people on this sub. You guys rock.

[Misc] Let's take the focus away from skin issues and say something you love about your skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
We are our own worst critics and I know when I look in the mirror, my eyes go straight to what's wrong rather than to what's right, even though in most cases the good outweighs the not so good, but we strive for this perfection that's in most cases unachievable. So right now, my forehead, temples and cheekbones have never looked smoother, and I would much rather focus on that than on the acne scars that I'm literally at my wits end with. What do you love about your skin right now?

[PSA] Always check the expiry date before buying sunscreen!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Summer has started, sunscreen promo displays are going up on shelves. But have you checked the expiry dates? Stores don't sell a lot of sunscreen during the other 3 seasons, so they're getting rid of old stock now. I went to Walmart today and noticed a lot of expired sunscreen. Some dated as far back as March 2019. Others had only a few months left and I had to dig through a bunch before I found ones that date to 2020. Obviously it doesn't matter as much if you're a daily user of sunscreen, you'd use it up in a month or two anyway.

Don't Lose Hope! [Acne]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I never had any major acne problems in high school until I started college and they hit me like an angry red freight train. All over my face and back, it was unbearable and nothing I bought would even begin to clear it up.Off to the dermatologist I went, and I assumed all my problems would be solved as most other people's problems had been, but after six months of 0.3% adapalene, birth control and 6% benezol peroxide wipes I was really starting to feel discouraged. My dermatologist told me that my skin would go through purges and that it things would get worse before they got better but for most people things were getting better by 3-4 months and here I was at the 6th month mark with no changes, I never even went through any purges it was just constant but consistent blemishes and cystic acne everywhere. Due to finances accutane wasn't really an option for me but I was honestly starting to consider what I could sell to finally be rid of my own personal plague.Patience pays off my friends, dont lose hope. Here I am at 9 months into still using the same 0.3% adapalene, birth control, etc and not one closed comedome, pimple or blemish to speak of. My skin finally began clearing up in month 7 and continued even faster in month 8 and finally here I am with skin that I though would never get better.Hang in there guys, sometimes these things take much longer than we would like but trust me in the end they're worth it.Edit: spelling

[PSA] Black tea saved my sunburnt skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
*disclaimer: I am not a doctor just a dumb girl who got lucky please seek medical help if you have sun poisoning*I committed the worst crime: I forgot my sunscreen. I spent about 3 hours in the sun unprotected and unsurprisingly walked away with a pretty gnarly burn across my shoulders, chest, and face. I had the typical sun poisoning symptoms so I went to my doctor and it turns out there’s nothing to be done about a bad burn except slather aloe on and be patient, however my shoulders were too painful to wear any clothing lay down or lift my arms and as a retail employee, waiting was not an option. Then...I remembered an old wives tale that a black tea compress could help heal scrapes and cuts and I decided to give it a try. I brewed some really strong black tea (3 bags to 1/2 cup of water) and soaked some paper towels and left them on my skin for a few hours and OH MY GOODNESS my skin has changed from almost purple to light pink and is no longer hot to the touch and I’m pretty much pain free. DEFINITELY give this a try next time you mess up it saved me from a long week of pain and sticky aloe lotion

[Acne] Pickers — how do you stop yourself from touching/picking at your face?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am a horrible picker and always have been. Sometimes I don’t even realize I’m doing it until I pick a scab that hurts. I will have “clear” skin and literally create acne because I’m picking at a scab or invisible blackhead. I know for a fact that my skin will clear up significantly if I can just stop picking but it’s so, so hard. [Personal] Clear Skin or Sex?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’ve been consistently taking my BC EVERY DAY for about a 7 months now (save for a week in April) and for the first time in like ever, my skin is finally starting to shape up.My scars are beginning to fade and my breakouts have become way more minimal and not cystic like they use to be.The issue is my sex drive is essentially GONE. I know BC can affect your sex drive, but it wasn’t AS bad when I was taking BC for like 6 weeks, then 3 weeks off, then back to on. Now that I’m taking packs back to pack I basically have no urge for sex at all. It’s not so much of an issue right now since I’m single, but I would like a relationship in the near future and I’m stressed about this. Major thing is, when my skin was at its peak worse, I didn’t want anyone to see me without makeup, now that I’m finally headed towards clear skin I would like to be with someone, but now I worry about how our sexual life would be.Any solutions??

[Misc] Presenting our brand new ScA Routine!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey everyone! We've updated the Products & Ingredients section of the wiki previously, and now we've tackled the ScA Routine! We wanted something that was really accessible and newbie-friendly, that didn't encourage people to buy and try a bunch of stuff all at once, and that really took people through the process of building up a routine step by step. There will be a follow-up to the ScA Routine called Expanding Your Routine! That will be for people who have their core routine figured out and would like some guidance adding in new products, like targeted treatments. If you want to get a notification when we make wiki updates or official Meta posts, click here! The new ScA Routine is here in the wiki, but you can also read it below! We hope you like it :D The ScA RoutineHaving a core routine provides your skin with all the necessary steps to keep it clean, healthy, and protected. For most people, these steps are all you need to keep your skin happy & healthy.Even if you’re looking to tackle a specific skin concern like acne, it’s important to start with the basics! When building a house, a solid foundation comes first. The same holds true for skincare routines - you need to have the basics before adding all the bells and whistles. You don't want your face to collapse, do you?Alright, your face won't actually collapse, but you can cause a lot of skin problems by using treatments before you have a solid foundation! Sometimes a good core routine, with the right products for your skin type, can even solve your skin issues entirely. So whether you’re looking for a minimalist routine or an extensive routine, this is the place to start! Part 1: Necessary steps before starting a new routine1. Figure out your skin typeEveryone's skin is different, but there are some broad categories that we use to distinguish different kinds of skin. Those are called skin types; they specify how your skin generally looks and reacts and what it needs. The most common skin types are dry, oily, combination, and normal.Knowing your skin type may be helpful for figuring out what products to add (i.e. dry skin might appreciate more moisturizing products), but there are no hard rules. Skin type is not an exact science, and your skin's behaviour can change - e.g. when you move to a different climate, when you get older, or when you take certain medications. In addition, the same moisturiser might work as well for someone with oily skin as it does for dry skin. So use skin types as a loose guideline rather than something to strictly adhere to.We recommend reading Skin Types, Proclivities, and Conditions for a thorough overview of the different skin types. If you've read up on skin types and still aren’t sure where your skin fits, that's okay! You’ll figure out what your skin likes and dislikes as you go along. 2. Have the right mindsetIf you go into this process with the wrong mindset, skincare can end up being incredibly confusing, frustrating, and disappointing. It’s easy to burn yourself out (and burn a hole in your pocket!) by trying too many new products, which may not give you the results you were expecting. Prevent that burnout by preparing your brain, knowing what to expect, and getting into the right mindset! There are no miracle products or brandsSkincare is a lot of trial and error! Even though some products might be more popular in this sub, that doesn't mean they are necessarily better than products that aren't mentioned as often. Introducing new products slowly is your best bet for finding what works for you.Ymmv - your mileage may vary! There is no perfect solution. What works for one person might not work for you, and vice versa. Your holy grail moisturiser could break someone else out, and their favorite cleanser could dry out your skin, even if you have similar skin types and skin concerns. This means that you have to figure out for yourself what your skin likes and doesn't like.Realistic expectations for your skinKeep in mind that we often compare ourselves to ‘ideal skin’ pictures that have fantastic lighting, angles, photoshop, facetune, makeup, etc. Even when comparing our skin to people we know in real life, distance plays a huge role! Skin looks very different from 3 ft away vs 3 inches away. Expect your skin to have some weird bumps, some acne, color variation, fine lines, weird hairs, etc. That's completely normal and part of being a human person made of flesh and tubes.Realistic time frames for your productsSome products have immediate effects (e.g. a moisturizer can help dry skin right away), but many skincare products are long term treatments that may not start having effects for weeks or months. Skincare is a marathon, not a race!Realistic expectations for what your products will doThere is no guarantee that you will get the skin you want, unfortunately. There are so many different factors that impact our skin, and sometimes we just can't change the way our bodies work, no matter how hard we try. So don't go on a spending spree thinking that if you buy enough products, you can have 'flawless' skin. Skincare can help, but it's always uncertain to what degree. 3. Create a reasonable budgetCreating a skincare routine isn't a one-time thing; you don't just buy a bunch of products and you're done. It's a process; you have to figure out what your skin likes and doesn't like. You'll buy a cleanser that ends up irritating your skin, or a moisturiser that's way too heavy. And you'll have to spend more money to find a replacement. So skincare isn't a one-time expense; it'll become part of your monthly spending habit, and you should plan accordingly. In addition, there are a lot of companies vying for your purchases, and a lot of empty marketing promises. It can be easy to be manipulated into spending too much or buying more products than you need, especially when you’re starting out. It's important to protect yourself from this by deciding ahead of time how much money you're willing and able to spend. Don't let companies take advantage of you, and make smart decisions. Before making any purchases, come up with a reasonable budget that fits your lifestyle - and stick to it!If you're not familiar with budgeting, now is a good time to start! Check out this great starter post from /r/personalfinance. If you prefer video, try this playlist on budgeting from The Financial Diet. Part 2: Components of the core ScA RoutineNow you've done the necessary preparations, get ready to meet the products you'll be using! We'll explain what products are part of the core ScA Routine, what they do, and why you need them.CleanserOur skin collects sweat, oil, bacteria, and dirt. Cleaning that off every day is good for our skin - as long as it's done gently! Cleansing can also help treat acne and it prepares the skin for any actives or treatments that you may be using. It's a good idea to use a cleanser at night, to wash off the gunk that builds up throughout the day. In the morning, depending on your skin's needs, you can use a cleanser or simply rinse with water.A good cleanser is one that leaves your skin feeling soft and maybe a bit moisturized - not dry, tight, or ‘squeaky clean.’ MoisturizerEven when we have a wonderfully gentle cleanser that doesn't dry us out, it still removes some of the oils that help keep our skin supple and moisturised. To restore these, and add some other beneficial ingredients, we use a moisturiser.A good moisturizer nourishes the skin and improves our skin's barrier. That helps treat and prevent obvious things like dryness, but also less-obvious concerns like oiliness, acne, fine lines, and leftover acne marks. It’s especially important to have a good moisturizer (or a few!) if you plan on using any potentially irritating actives in the future. SunscreenWhenever we're exposed to the sun, it affects our skin in different ways. Some are good - it can boost our mood and influences our sleep-wake rhythm. But some are more harmful; it causes skin cancer and sunburns, as well as fine lines and hyperpigmentation. We don't want people to be scared of the sun, but we do encourage everyone to be smart and protect themselves. There are a lot of options nowadays of good sunscreens - not all of them are greasy, thick, and white! There are also some actives that make your skin more sensitive to the sun (like retinoids, AHAs, and benzoyl peroxide); if you're planning on using those in the future, having a good sunscreen in your routine is a must.So if you’re planning on using those in the future, or want to prevent skin cancer, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation, it’s important to use a good sunscreen! Example RoutineHere’s a hypothetical routine with the products listed above - your routine may look different depending on the products you use and your skin concerns.AMRinse with water or use your CleanserMoisturizerSunscreenPMCleanserMoisturizerFeel free to deviate from this as needed - for example, some people may not need to use a moisturizer in the AM (especially if their sunscreen is moisturizing!), and that’s ok! Do what works for you. Part 3: Starting your new routineAll right. You've done the preparations, you've learned what products your core routine should have, so let's start building your routine! If you’re starting from scratch, great! This will cover all you need to know to put together your first skincare routine. If you already have a product or two and are wondering if your products are good, jump on down to [Evaluate your products]! And if you need to fill in any gaps, well, we’ve got you covered :)1. Choosing what product to start withFiguring out what you want to purchase can be incredibly daunting - there are a lot of products out there! To help narrow down your options a bit, we’ve compiled a few lists of products that have lots of good reviews.Keep in mind YMMV - while these can be a helpful starting point, they aren’t the end-all-be-all of good skincare products. It’s totally fine to hate a product that (seemingly) everyone else loves, and you can definitely choose a product that isn’t “ScA approved”!If you’re starting from scratch, it can be difficult to figure out if you should start with a cleanser, moisturizer, or sunscreen. While there’s no right or wrong product to start with, you may prefer to start with one or the other depending on your skin type and concerns.Starting with moisturizer is a good choice for a lot of people - while testing out your new moisturizer, you can substitute rinsing your face with water for a cleanser, and hats or seeking shade for sunscreen. This is especially helpful if you have dry skin!If you have oily skin, it may be more comfortable to start by adding a gentle cleanser.Sunscreen would generally be the last product to add - there are other sun protection methods you can use in the meantime, such as wearing a hat or seeking shade, and finding the perfect sunscreen can be a bit of a process!Cleanser overview & product recsMoisturizer overview & product recsSunscreen overview & product recs 2. Adding a new product to your routinePatch test. It’s important to patch test products, even if you have no history of sensitivities or allergies. Click here for a guide on patch testing.Add one new product at a time. If you have multiple products you want to add to your routine, pick one and test it out for a week or two. That way you can easily evaluate whether a product is working for you or not. If you add multiple products at the same time and one of them ends up breaking you out or causing irritation, it can be incredibly difficult to identify which product is the culprit - save yourself the time and hassle, introduce products one at a time. 3. Evaluating your new productAfter you've used a product for a while, it's time to assess whether it has a place in your routine. Ask yourself the following questions: Does it irritate your skin? If a product causes serious irritation - stinging, rashes, prolonged redness - drop it! But sometimes it’s a bit difficult to decipher. Actives like BHAs or benzoyl peroxide may cause a bit of dryness, and that may be fine as long as it’s manageable. However, you want to be stricter with products like cleansers and moisturizers - there’s no need to put up with a drying cleanser or irritating moisturizer! Does it cause acne? Drop it! Keep in mind that some actives (like retinoids, AHAs, or benzoyl peroxide) may cause a purge period where acne gets worse before it gets better - check out purging vs breaking out for more info!If a product ends up breaking you out, you should make a note of the ingredients list so you can compare it to other products you’ve used. That way you can narrow down the potential culprit and avoid that ingredient in the future, saving you time and money in the long run. Keep in mind that ingredient concentration (how far up the ingredients list it is) and overall formula play a role in whether a product will break you out or not - there’s more to it than simply whether an ingredient is present or not!Check out A guide to finding your problem ingredients using excel & How to cross-reference ingredients lists for a thorough overview. Does it do what it’s supposed to do? You may be able to figure this one out pretty quickly - sometimes, however, it’s a tricky thing to know. Some things to consider when evaluating how well your cleanser is working:Do you feel product leftover after cleansing? If so, you may want to find a different cleanser or add a first cleanser like micellar water or oil cleansing!Does your face feel calm & soft? Great! If your skin feels irritated, tight, dry, or ‘squeaky clean’ after cleansing, drop it!Things to consider when evaluating how well your moisturizer works:Does it leave your skin feeling bouncy and supple? Happy and healthy- not dry and tight- is what a good moisturizer is aiming for.How long does that moisturized feeling last? If it only lasts an hour or two, you may want to find a different moisturizer! Perhaps try a thicker moisturizer, like a cream or a balm.Sunscreens are harder to evaluate since they’re about prevention, but some things to consider may include:Does it have adequate UV protection?SPF 30+ for UVBPPD 8+ or PA+++ for UVA (if that information is available)Is it easy and comfortable to wear?Is your hyperpigmentation worsening, or are you developing new freckles/dark spots? If so, you may need a sunscreen with higher protection! If your product is gentle enough, doesn't break you out and does what it's supposed to do, that's awesome! Go ahead and enjoy it as part of your skincare routine :)If it turns out that your product irritates your skin, gives you acne, or doesn't do what it should, it might be time to try a different one!Go to the product page to choose a new product:Cleanser overview & product recsMoisturizer overview & product recsSunscreen overview & product recsThen go back to Step 2 in this process: Adding a new product to your routine. Further ReadingGuides by Lab Muffin:How to choose a gentle cleanserHow to choose a moisturizerGuides by u/JoanofSarcasm:Evaluating your routineEvaluating your routine: cleansersEvaluating your routine: moisturizersEvaluating your routine: sunscreenRelated topicsRoutine orderShaving

[Routine Help] Is it possible to get rid of blackheads without squeezing them? + beginner skin routine help

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi.So I have a lot of blackheads around my face. I tried to clean my pores with that tool which has a "needle" in one side and a "circle" on the other side, but my skin end up terrible (red and inflated).I'm a 36F and I have oily skin. I have dark spot from sun damage, a few acne scars, big pores and blackheads on the nose and chin. I would like to improve my skin to look better, younger and feel more comfortable. My skin routine is pretty basic: I'm using kojic acid soap to clean my face one a day, a moisturizing cream for oily skin and eucerin sunscreen 50+ dry touch.Could you recommend a routine for me? I've read a lot here and there, but I can't make a clear idea about what could be better for me.Thanks in advance.PS: sorry about my english, I'm from Spain.

[DIY] Documentation. Documentation. Documentation.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
There are so many answers and solutions out there, it can be extremely difficult to hone in on what over-the-counter products or home remedies or diet changes will work for you. I personally spent over a decade figuring out what would work for me. Over a decade of reading a new article or trying a new product line that just launched.More often than not, I would be met with disappointment and discouragement, and I'm sure some of you can relate. The best shift in my mindset that I had was one day when I just started writing everything down. I would write down what products I used everyday, what ingredients those products had, what I ate that day, where I went, and most importantly the condition of my skin on these days.Once I started putting it all on paper, I was able to keep better track of what I was doing to my body everyday and how it was responding.A great thing I challenge you all to do is to grab a notepad, or make a word document, and for the next two weeks detail all of the variables that I mentioned above. It honestly doesn't take more than 10 minutes a day, and it will provide you with clarity that you didn't have before.Put it on paper, and you'd be surprised how simple your solutions might be.

[misc] (anti-aging) anyone else think tretinoin/retinol isn’t worth it?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I don’t have terrible acne or anything, but got kinda brainwashed that tretinoin is the best skincare item known to man and that I MUST use it to look good or else I’ll turn old and ugly.I’ve been using it for a several months, and honestly I’m tired of it and going to stop.1) I can’t wax my eyebrows/upper lip, and I’m tired of trying to pluck the hairs/attempt to shave etc. and I feel like I’ve gotten a lot more peach fuzz on my face.2) my face is always dry now. No matter how much moisturizer I put on. And makeup looks so bad on me because it makes me look flaky. Even if my face didn’t feel dry putting it on.3) freaking out over “increased sun sensitivity” even though I already wear sunblock and wondering if I’m reapplying enough constantly.4) redness on my face. Looking worse using it.I’m tired of trying to “push through” and build my tolerance to see effects. My skin looked mostly okay before. My biggest problem is blackheads, and my kinda sunken under eye area (which I would need fillers to fix, not skin creams)Just doesn’t seem worth it for me to keep using, but I feel like I’ve been conditioned to think I MUST use tretinoin. I just wanna wax my eyebrows and upper lip again, yo.-there are probably a bunch of people in this world who age gracefully who ARENT using tretinoin right? I feel like reading SCA makes me think it’s way more widespread than it actually is? Or do I HAVE to use tretinoin to look okay?

[Sun Care] Dermatologist told me to ditch sunscreen

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Recently I went to a dermatologist for the 1st time and while discussing my skincare routine, he told me to not wear sunscreen because they're all too greasy and that Asians have a very low chance of getting skin cancer. He said the only people who need to wear sunscreen are pale white people (gestured to himself). I live in Australia and if you're not familiar with Aus, skin cancer here is freakishly common. There's so much public health promotion about anything skin cancer or sun related because the sun here is so strong. Every kid grows up with the motto "slip, slop, slap" in their heads. Should I report this Dr?

[Acne] Is anyone else's skin 100% dependent on diet? How do you deal with it?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm pushing 30 and it took me years to realize that my diet was the sole reason for my adult acne. Sadly it's not a single trigger, but literally anything remotely inflammatory sets my skin off: namely salt, sugar, fat, dairy - in ANY quantity. My big & expensive care routine helps (I think), but it really comes down to food in the end.I spent the weekend with friends eating out and drinking a bit, and now I'm paying for it HARD. It's such a constant struggle - I eat the saddest, blandest, most boring diet to keep my skin under control (which works - confirming my diet hypothesis), and enjoying any social/holiday treat is completely off the table (for my sanity). How do those of you affected by your diet deal with this?

[Meta] Adding requirements for Review posts (and announcing a new ScA Routine!)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey guys! We hope your week is off to an excellent start!--Check out this baby axolotl-- Review requirementsWe've had post requirements for Hauls, Shelfies, B&As, and Selfies up for a while now. They have helped make sure that those posts have helpful information for everyone reading, so that they're a valuable resource for the community! We decided it'd be good to do the same for posts with a Review tag :) Reviews posted from now on should at least cover:full product name(s);how long you've been using it;what's the packaging like;product feel and smell;what are the positive and negative effects;does it do what it should / what you bought it for;overall opinion. We'll enforce this rule just the same as we do with Hauls etc. - you won't get an official warning if you break it, but your post will be removed until you add the required information. We hope that these new requirements help to keep reviews informative and useful for readers, as well as providing some easy-to-hit factors for potential reviewers :) Wiki updatesWe recently updated the Helpful Resources section of the wiki index - yay!And as announced in the title, we're updating the ScA Routine! This one is going to be more newbie-friendly, and it'll have a sequel for those who already have their core routine covered. That way, we can have useful information for people of different experience levels. We're really excited about it!We hope to post the new ScA Routine this week. Stop Hating Your Skin [Misc]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My acne used to be a burden, until I began to see it in a new way. My pimples taught me how to deal with difficult, stubborn problems. I learned how to research, when I spent hours trying products, looking up ingredients, and solutions for my acne. It taught me to be dedicated to a cause since I stayed away from certain foods, stuck to a routine, prioritized my health, and made sure to keep up with something as unpredictable as acne, all requiring lots of discipline. It also taught me to deal with a burden that many people don’t have, and that society looks down upon. My scars taught me to accept what I can’t change, and to love being a human. I learned how to accept other people’s flaws, and love their humanity. I don’t care about a guy’s “hotness” anymore, and I don’t get jealous of another girl’s beauty. The acne journey taught me to be okay with imperfection, which as somebody with OCD, was the hardest battle in my life. I probably won’t have perfect skin ever, and that’s fine. I can only try my best to improve the features that have shaped who I am, not destroy the old me. Acne also trained me for aging. I’m still a kid, but I know what it’s like to go from being valued for almost entirely what’s on the outside, to being expected to hate yourself for being ugly. I know what it’s like to not have male (or any) attention and to be mistreated for my looks. And I know that one day my skin will ultimately sag and fold, and I’m okay with that. Acne is a struggle that put me through dark, awful times, but it also carried me to the top when I accepted it. I have acne and I will try to improve it for myself- but FUCK YOU if you think I should see myself or my acne as ugly, or that being ugly is even a bad thing. We can only be expected to be human, an human beings are shaped by the ugly and unspeakable. It’s okay. I LOVE MY ACNE AND YOU SHOULD TOO!!! Tldr; See how your acne has helped you at a deeper level in order to stop hating it.

[Meta] Could we all agree to please stop using self-deprecating comments in our posts?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I see a lot of posts where people call their acne “hideous” or their skin texture “gross” or their signs of aging “disgusting” and I would like everyone who posts like this to consider who it’s really effecting. People who have skin much worse than yours may see a picture labeled in such a way and this “well if this skin is disgusting... what must people think of my skin ?!”. While this is never how it’s intended, it’s a real side effect that needs to be considered. Words have impact, and we should choose them wisely. Also, beyond this, it’s also not helpful or kind to yourself. A lot of the people posting on here have skin issues, and we all understand how frustrating and tough it can be dealing with them. But being hard on yourself over something you can’t control is only going to make you feel worse, and won’t help you positively in anyway.Just something to think about!

[Misc] Can we have a bot reply for the question “should I go on Accutane?”

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Look, I love this sub and think it’s an overall nice community, but asking into the abyss of 950K strangers about whether you should take Accutane is probably one of the worst ways to use the internet. For one, isotretinoin is under lock and key for most countries on earth and your dermatologist will have a long conversation with you about it. Even if we all say you should go on Accutane, it’s up to you and your doctor to weigh the risks. It’s a serious drug. It’s a miracle drug for some people. But I think this 1X per week question needs an auto reply in the sub. Does anyone else agree?

[Personal] WHAT? My keratosis pilaris is already gone??

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Guys, I am shocked. I did not expect the texture to disappear with 3 uses of retinol. I have had keratosis pilaris since I was in 1st grade. The dermatologist my mum took me to said to JUST RUB IT REALLY HARD lol. I happened to see the wiki of this sub 3 days ago and it said to use retinol. I already had a bottle of TO that was too stingy for my face (bought a prescribed one for the face) and I used that (0.5% Retinol). Could this be real? In 3 days 80% is gone and the rest is less visible.

[Misc] A story about how this subreddit helped me

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I had perfect skin growing up till I was 18. I got complemented on it often. I thought it would always be clear, so I didn’t take care of it. I used low quality products and rarely wore sunscreen. As soon as I went to college everything changed. I suddenly started getting cystic acne. My skin hurt so bad and my self esteem plummeted.I took my skin for granted. I never learned how to care for it. I felt like I was fighting against my skin like it was evil. Then I found this subreddit. I poured over it for hours and learned that I need to love and care for my skin like I do for my internal organs. My mindset completely changed from ignoring my skin, to hating it, to loving it as a part of myself. I have a new found desire to not necessarily clear my skin, but just care for it and keep it healthy. Thanks!

[Acne] [Personal] My acne is not just ruining my life, but my whole family's lives.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
(for context, I'm 25/F)this is mostly a venting post... just hoping there's someone out there who has been in my position. I'm feeling really low right now.I've never had great skin, but it took a turn for the worse around December. Obviously hormonal--huge painful red cysts and closed comodones on my cheeks and chin. I had been wanting to take out my mirena IUD for a while (for many reasons) and figured it was because of that so I took it out... and it only got worse.I've basically become a recluse and only leave the house when I absolutely have to, because it's so exhausting to spend 1hr+ trying to cover up my acne with makeup (I have very fair skin, so the acne + hyperpigmentation is very red and visible), and that just makes me look like a gross cakeface. I feel awful for my two year old son, who is spending more and more time on the ipad/TV because we're running out of activities to do at home (or because I need to distract him while I take foreverrrr getting ready).I finally visited the derm a couple months ago, he gave me adapalene gel and minocycline and things have only gotten WORSE (I didn't think they could!!??). I know about the purge, and was expecting it, but it only made me fall apart emotionally.went back to the derm today, and he put me on spiro, tret, a couple other things yada yada. I have a little hope that things will get better, but I know it can take a while. like six months. like a year. I am just sitting here in tears thinking about the lame summer my son is going to have because I am afraid to go outside and have people see me like this.not only that, but my plan was to get pregnant sometime before 2020. with all these meds and at the rate this will probably go, it doesn't look like that is happening. once I get clear skin (however long it takes), I want a while to actually enjoy it instead of getting pregnant and dealing with acne again. I'm completely throwing off our family plans because of my stupid skin.I feel extremely selfish. I wish acne didn't affect me so much, but it does. I can't pass a mirror without wanting to cry or getting angry. I can't look anyone in the eye, and this is when I have a pound of makeup covering my face.any other moms dealing with severe acne? how do you not let it affect your life so much? I feel like the worst mom in the world.

I hope this isn’t a dumb question, but how will you know when you are FULLY done repairing your moisture barrier? How do you know the second you stop that entire routine, your skin won’t start to decline again? When do you know it’s time to start introducing other products (AHAs, BHAs, etc.)?

Not all clear skin looks the same [PSA]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
We already know that someone’s skin care products won’t work for every other person but we also forget that not all clear skin looks the same. Some people have pore-less(lol) looking baby skin and some people have clear skin with some texture. You can have acne scars and still have clear skin, and thats fine. You can have dark circles and still have clear skin. You can have hyperpigmentation and still have clear skin. You can have blackheads and still have clear skin. Clear skin doesn’t mean having no fucking skin problem ever on your face. We all genetically have VERY different skin types than each other and your skin is your largest organ. Its so complex, it requires more than a stranger’s skin care routine or advice for it to work. Skin care is a journey of fails and success. And through out that journey i learned that clear skin is not one fixed perception on social media or marketing. It’s like everyone is killing themselves trying to reach an unrealistic image of clear skin. Some people naturally have more texture than others, and yes exfoliating acids can help for this but it doesn’t eliminate the problem from occurring again all together. Some people don’t have texture. But depending on the severity of your texture, you can still have clear skin even with it. I have come to terms with the fact that my skin will never look like a silky pore less looking baby’s bum. Your skin is your friend. So treat it like one. Don’t be so harsh on it. Take time to really understand your skin and what works for it. And stop trying to achieve something beyond what it can do. Think of it as having a really stubborn child, being harsh on them will never change the problem, in fact it will only make them more stubborn. Taking time to understand why your child is stubborn and gradually working on improving that with healthy ways and patience is what will change them. And your skin is literally the same. Don’t compare your skin to another person’s with completely different genetics than you. And don’t forget the fact that skin problems are NOT permanent. Just because you wake up with acne or texture one day does not mean you will have that same acne on your face for the rest of your life. Skin care is a journey and process and you have to trust it. Acne is the most natural thing on earth yet we throw a fuss whenever we get a pimple on our face. Its completely unfair to us as human beings to torture ourselves over normal things. Understand that your clear skin will look different than another person’s clear skin and it doesn’t make your skin any less clear. Some people are more prone to hyperpigmentation than others. Some people take longer to fade their acne scars than others. And thats okay and totally normal. Heck, not even the same skin products that work for my sister work for me. We don’t have the same skin type at all. Accept your skin at it’s best for what it best for what it is. Stop trying to make already clear skin more “clear” because you like what another person’s skin looks like more. Your skin can only achieve what it’s genetics allow it to achieve. For example: Some model may not have dark circles but genetically, i have dark circles. And no matter how many products i use my under eyes will literally never look like hers because we both have different genetics that make things the way they are. This doesn’t mean i compare myself to her and torture myself over something beyond my control, this means i can gradually work on reducing the darkness around them while also accepting that i will always have dark circles and its not a flaw, it’s actually totally normal. My conclusion is, learn to be less harsh on yourself and your skin (as this is the skin you will have for literally the rest of your life), don’t compare your skin to others because every skin type is differently complex than the other, there is no fixed perception of what “clear skin” looks like (most people use face tune. There is no such thing as having no pores) and keep your skin expectations realistic for God’s and your skin’s sake. (Sorry if this is kinda long, just had to get it off my chest)
