[review] Tested Four Different Sunscreens over four days in the Texas sun
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I spent four days this week outside in the hot Texas sun and swimming, so I thought I’d use it as an opportunity to test out some sunscreens and report back on how they worked. Each day, I spent roughly 6 hours outdoors in a bathing suit, with at least 2 hours spent in the pool. I tried four different sunscreens on my face and body. I also wore makeup each day on top of the sunscreen to see how each performed under makeup. I did not do a good job of reapplying—I only reapplied on one day when I felt like I was getting pink. Tony Moly Magic Food Mango Mild Sun Block. I love the consistency of this one—it feels very moisturizing, almost like a lotion going on but doesn’t feel greasy or look shiny, even after a whole day of wearing it. It doesn’t leave any sort of white cast. It also smells really nice. The thing that had me a bit skeptical was that there isn’t a super clear SPF description on the bottle, maybe it was on the insert but I threw that away right after I bought it. I read on an amazon review that it was 50++, so hoped that was right. This one performed super well. With only a single morning application, this sunscreen kept me from getting any color at all—no tanline at the end of the day or anything. It also left my skin feeling moisturized after getting in the pool, which I liked. Finally, you can’t beat the price on this one, at $19. And I think that I’ll get a lot more applications out of the bottle. Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion WetForce SPF 50+. This one is super thin, almost watery consistency. I used up nearly a third of the bottle to cover my face and body and still did not feel that I had super good coverage. It soaked into my skin well, without a white cast, but wasn’t moisturizing like the tony moly. My makeup went on ok over it, but as the day went on, it seemed like my makeup was melting off. This one was the one I reapplied about 2 hours into my time outdoors, because I felt like my skin was getting pink/burning. I again used a ton of it (my bottle is almost all gone after two applications). After another hour, I felt like I was getting burned again, so I put my cover up on and moved to the shade. That night, even though I’d spent the least time in the sun of all the days, I had the most color—clear tanlines and pinky cheeks and shoulders. This one was the absolute worst of the four in my opinion, especially for the price of $40 (which I think ends up giving 3-5 applications total) Cle de Peau UV Protective Cream Tinted (ocher) SPF 50+ and UV Protective Emulsion For Body SPF 50+. I have been waiting to try out my samples of these and thought I’d test them out finally. I used the tinted version on my face and the body emulsion on my body. The tinted was super duper thick and was a bit difficult to rub in. It gave nice coverage, but also felt a little too mattifying/sticky for me. The color was nice, so I didn’t feel like I needed any foundation or anything, and it wore pretty well under my makeup—it was almost too flat and made blending makeup a bit tougher, but once applied my makeup held well throughout the day and I never got greasy. The body emulsion went on a bit easier and didn’t leave a white cast. The consistency was fine, about what you’d expect a sunscreen to feel like. With this one, I also got no color after the whole day, even with only one application—no tanlines after the whole day and no rosiness. Performance was good and makeup looked nice under it. But at $85 for the tinted face one and another $90 for the body emulsion, I’m not sure it would be worth it to buy the full size. Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50. I also tested my old favorite drugstore sunscreen staple. This has been what I’ve used on my children for five years and never once had a burn. The consistency is super thick and hard to rub in and does leave a white cast. I also hate the smell of it—super chemically. However, it’s not greasy and not overly sticky, so makeup does alright on top of it. It gives great coverage with just a small amount. And it lasts really well. After the full day, without reapplication, I had no color or tanlines. And at $13, it’s the cheapest of the bunch and I know a bottle will last a ton of applications. Overall, my favorite of the four and the best value in my opinion is the Tony Moly Mango—l felt like my skin was better for wearing it and it gave great performance. The worst performing of the four was Shiseido, and def not worth the price. Cle de Peau performed well enough, but is not worth the money in my opinion, when tony moly performed better and felt nicer on the skin. Neutrogena is definitely something you should just have in your trunk of your car—it costs nothing and is a good performer and lasts forever.

[Misc] Brandon's latest post is quite disturbing, and it sounds like civil war as broken out at Deciem HQ
Beauty Tips For Body Care
It sounds to me that Estée Lauder may finally be trying to exert its clout - I presume the "blood" comments are drug testing?Play Ball has continued much harder. Another round of chess began the minute I left the “mental hospital”. Bad people continued doing very bad things and I have learned to play ball harder. This week, the other players turned it up a notch and I gave them everything they could ask for—even actual blood everywhere, because real scenes contain real blood. To those who think they can kick me out of DECIEM in any context, I’m not going anywhere. If you look closely, you’ll see that every single move from me is calculated because I have seen cameras before. “Heal the World” is taking a bit longer than Michael Jackson and @zuck would prefer.https://www.instagram.com/p/BjZsZqJBDZ9/?hl=en&taken-by=deciem

[Acne] How I stopped a fungal breakout in its tracks
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I apologize sincerely for the lack of pictures, but you'll just have to believe me. :)This weekend, I was in a very hot and humid Chicago, eating garbage and drinking too much. A recipe for fungus. Upon returning to Colorado, I immediately felt about 10 red, itchy pimples forming on my chin and hairline. One of them came to a lovely whitehead yesterday while I was at work, but the others were brewing beneath the surface. When I got home, I washed my face and applied PTR Therapeutic Sulfur mask to the affected areas (side note: keep that shit so far from your eyes; it will burn them) for about 20 minutes, followed by a bunch of squalane and then my good old clotrimazole cream (generic Up and Up Atheletes Foot cream). I know others on here are huge fans of Nizoral and other dandruff shampoos, but I just find them too drying and too inconvenient to use. When I woke up this morning, most of the pimples were gone or quickly receding. And none of them have swelled up and gotten painful, as my pimples usually do. I think I'm on the mend! I just wanted to share that quick and easy routine for others who tend to break out in clusters. I personally believe these type of cluster breakouts to be fungal, though I don't believe that I have a persistent fungal problem. Between the clusters and for months at a time, I have clear skin and don't follow a particular antifungal skincare routine.

[skin concern] vertical lip lines — what anti-aging treatments/preventatives do you recommend?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’m 37 and am getting fairly noticeable vertical lip lines. My mother has them badly so I’m sure it’s genetic. To prevent them from getting as bad as my mother’s, I am willing to do laser treatments, retinols, basically anything. What advice do you have? For the last 5 years I’ve been using SPF facial products and spf lip balm daily, but was a slacker on it till my early 30s sadly. Also use salicylic acid toner (have a tendency toward acne, clear now) and mandelic serum. No other products (but would be happy to add something for fine lines/aging).

[Personal] I hate looking at old pictures of myself from when my skin was so clear, I really took it for granted
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I probably shouldn't have but I ended up scrolling through a lot of my old pictures on Facebook, many of which I was tagged in from friends where I would be makeup free, and it kind of hurt to see that my skin will never look that clear because now it's covered in scars.I did have to start Retin-A back in 2011 after suddenly getting cystic acne for the first time in my 21 years of life, and after that my skin looked great. Now at 27 I have had to go back on it after giving it a break (I've been using it again for a year now) and my skin just isn't what it used to look like.I just remember being that girl that people would ask "How is your skin so clear?" or people thinking I have makeup on when I didn't. Having this acne at 27 has taken such a toll in my self confidence and my inability to leave the house without makeup on, I feel like I'm too old for this shit and I'm sick of it. It certainly doesn't help that all my friends have beautiful skin and barely wear makeup (they are literally walking Glossier campaigns, dammit).I do try to get over this and build myself up, focusing on my other qualities. I guess tonight is just one of those nights that I'm feeling like garbage. Hopefully other people here are feeling that struggle at my age still.

[Personal] [Review] Positive, unexpected results from using The Ordinary's Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I've been using said product for about nine days now (after the recommended two weeks of spot-testing, no negative side effects) in hopes that it helps regulate my stress and Mirena hormonal acne on my forehead. My skin is doing the expected purging but what I am here to talk about is a little different.I used the solution on areas other than my face because I had a hypothesis that it may help in other skin areas. I used it on a spot I have on my arm where a hair has been trapped forever (six years), never swollen or infected, just there. And my fellow skin freaks, two days ago the hair breached the surface. (yes, in case any of you are worried that the AHA may lead to sun sensitivity, I have been using sunscreen, sunscreen is my religion) I also used the toning solution in, erm, other areas, where ingrown hairs happen for me (nipple hair). And by golly, this fucker worked!! (yes, I have been very careful in application, spot-treatment only where no other products have worked).I wish for you all happy, healthy skin and positive results from any product you use!

[Misc] went to aesthetician told to try something for my slightly dry skin
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I wrote a post a week ago describing my clear skin from the modified caveman regimen, I went to an aesthetician to get their opinion and advice on my lack of a routine. Although my skin was clear she began telling me how the caveman regimen works but doesn't address bigger issues, like clogged pores and dead skin, both of which is what she said I have, and along with that enlarged pores. She asked me what I had done prior and my acne history and I explained everything to her. She asked if I were interested in natural skin care and I said before I start anything I want to do research. She suggested manuka honey as a face wash and as a mask. She wanted me to try it for 5 days, today is the 5th day. and determine if it has helped my skin in any way.I've of other people using Manuka honey for their acne prior but never thought about trying it so I never looked into it. I liked the fact that she explained my skin was likely dehydrated and the honey has a bunch of anti-bacterial properties, vitamins and minerals and will help lock in moisture while clearing up plugs from pores. I went to Whole Foods and picked up the Wedderspoon MH 12 kfactor.Today is day 5:1st day, first use let me know that yes I had slightly dry skin, a somewhat rough surface and that things (like dry plugs) were coming out of my pores. It felt great and hydrating to my skin as well.2nd day, very similar to the first day, I also noticed a few pimples (which I did not notice prior) had surfaced from probably being blocked up under the skin.3rd day, skin is smooth and any other blemishes are clearing up (at this point I'm 95% blemish free from what I thought was 100% when I started but I think things were just being masked by dead skin)4th day, skin is smoother and blemishes are fading fast, my skin is hydrated and I still have a few plugs coming out here and there5th day (today), a few more plugs are making their way out of certain areas, no active pimples, 98% clear and getting better. GF and others commenting on my clear skin.My skin at this point feels great, I haven't had smooth skin like this in literally years, my pores are being unclogged and worked out, blemishes are fading fast and pores are getting smaller. My complexion is looking supple and smooth and skin tone is becoming ever so even.AM:Wake up, dampen hands grab a lil bit of honey and message into face, work it around for 3-5 mins then let it sit there, if you have any body acne you can use it there as well. I let sit anywhere from 20-60mins and then take a shower. I do not use anything else at the moment as I need to go back to the aesthetician and get an update.PM:Same as AM, work into skin for 3-5 mins, use as mask for 20-60 mins and then shower. You can do this ultimately how many times you want in day (after a workout etc.). If you don't have time for a mask then just shower, not a big deal.I'm surprised by this and will definitely continue using MH for the foreseeable future. I recommend.

[Sun Care] New research suggests UV rays may not be the only damaging element to protect yourself from this hot summer season
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Skin’s enemy number one is the sun. You know that. But your hair dryer? Your workout? Science now shows that heat can also wreak some serious havoc. “I knew something was up when my patients with melasma, who swore they were slathering on sunscreen and fading creams religiously and staying out of direct sunlight, found the dark patches and blotchiness on their faces were getting no better,” says Shasa Hu, M.D., a dermatologist in Miami and a member of the Dr. Brandt Skin Advisory Board. “The more I looked into it, the more it became evident that regular exposure to high temperatures appeared to be inducing oxidative damage and boosting melanin production in a way that was very similar to how UV rays cause hyperpigmentation.” For years, dermatologists have talked about the damage linked to UVA and UVB rays. “It’s as if someone roped of just those two wavelengths from the rest of the cascade of light. But we are also regularly exposed to visible light and infrared radiation [which heats the skin] and are just now starting to understand that the whole spectrum af ects the skin,” says Neal Schultz, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City and a member of the Shape Brain Trust.Full article : https://www.readbeauty.com/your-skin-hates-heat/

[Misc] Foot routine that has worked for me
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I often post for help in this sub, so I thought I'd "give back" with the one routine that is actually working for me: my foot routine!I have a strong tendency to develop rough, deeply calloused feet--it runs in the family. Sometimes it would get so bad that it would even bleed, yech. This routine changed everything for me.1) Take a shower, dry off2) Immediately file heels and other callused regions with a foot file (not a pumice stone). Look for an emery board type texture. Actually, a plain old emery board also works, especially for small extra flaky spots.3) Generously apply Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Foot Cream, in the white tube (the blue tube works well too but doesn't smell as nice and feels a little less moisturizing)4) Put on socksWithin about a week, my feet start to feel human again, and now after years of doing this sporadically, my feet can even be called soft. :O

[Acne] Going on holidays in hot countries always, always clears my skin up. Nothing else has been as dramatic/effective. Is it vitamin D or what?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I live in Ireland. I have pale, oily skin with warm undertones and don't burn easily. I have nice skin, plump, even skin-tone, small pores, I don't have freckles (nothing wrong with freckles) or blackheads or redness or white heads...my skin looks eerily blemish free...then PCOS will fuck it up with hormonal spots on my jaw/chin/cheeks.I wore factor 25-50 always in the past while in Spain/Italy. I use biore face milk spf 50 now and I'm always out in the sun but it doesn't clear my skin up in my own climate. The benefits are consistent when in hot countries. After about 3-7 days of being in the sun, I'd be acne free.Even any spots on my back/shoulders just disappeared. Any explanation for this?

[Misc] Question: Would this community like an AMA from a Board Certified Dermatologist?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have a friend who is a nearly 30 year, Board Certified Dermatologist. He has a rather large presence on FB and Instagram where he posts pictures and videos of procedures he does. He loves to educate people about the care and treatment associated with body's largest organ. I told him he should get on Reddit and perhaps do an AMA but he knows nothing about the Reddit communities (his loss). Anyway, I thought I would come here and ask you all if you would like something like this from him and then take your responses back to him.If this is something everyone is interested in then we will, of course, verify everything with the Mods so you can be sure he is who he says he is.Thank you and have a great day.EDIT: If this is something you would like, please put your comments on here with the knowledge that I will send this to him to read and encourage him. I am doing this not because I get anything from this but because I am a big fan of Reddit and the positive things it can do. Thanks.

[acne] Astonishing result from unusual product! Monistat for Angular Cheilitis, forehead acne
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi guys, hopefully I’m posting this correctly?I have had acne for 28 years, and have wrestled with Angular Cheilitis (painful, persistent cracks at the corners of my mouth) off and on for three. After endless googling, I finally broke down and bought Monistat to treat the mouth cracks. My skin overreacts to Everything. I’m careful about toothpaste, lipstick, apples, avocado. Everything that comes near my mouth can cause a rash, or cracks in my lips. With trepidation, I put the Monistat on the cracks on the corners of my mouth. I had a washcloth ready in case it burned and signaled a reaction. It didn’t, and even seemed a bit soothing. On a whim, and under the theory of “can’t hurt, might help...” I put the Monistat on the bumpy, closed comedone field on my forehead. I crossed my fingers and went to bed.In the morning, I raced to the mirror to see the results. The cracks were 80% better, and the persistent bumps on my forehead were nearly gone. What. The. What?!?I’ve been putting Monistat on the cracks three or four times a day for a few days, and can laugh without pain. I can smile and talk and eat and smile, all without cracking the skin or ripping open the scales that form. And my forehead? Smoother than it has been in years. Literally years. I’ve spent hours in the mirror trying to get the bumps out (I know, I know. I’m on the compulsive skin pickers sub as well...).I’ve been treating acne aggressively for 28 years. I’m 40 now, and have spent a bajillion dollars on dermatologists, lotions and potions. I’ve joked about sacrificing a goat to appease the Acne Gods, promised to never pick if that would fix it, sworn to heaven above that I’ll never swear again if this would just go away. And now? Armed with knowledge from this sub and the phrase “fungal acne”, I bought a $7.99 tube of Monistat. I put that sh*t on everything and now...Could this actually be working?!?I’m guardedly optimistic, and nearly in tears. Could I have clear skin (except for the pigmentation and redness) for the first time in 28 years? Could I go to the grocery store without foundation? Can I leave the house without layers of product to cover my horrible skin?Fingers crossed, guys. This could be a game changer. I am eternally grateful for this sub.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I’ve gone the past couple months desperately pretending like I am unaffected. I put makeup on and I muster up confidence and I go to college and I go to work, i put myself in professional environments, I socialize, I laugh and I DO NOT ALLOW MYSELF to let my skin control my life, I DO NOT ALLOW MYSELF to hide, but the thing is IT DOES affect me and I need just a few minutes to be dramatic and self loathing about it. I can’t talk to anyone without their eyes drifting around my face. I can’t go anywhere without getting advice from strangers. I can’t eat or drink anything unhealthy without wondering if everyone thinks I’ve done this to myself. I can’t let anyone or anything touch my face without cringing. Makeup isn’t fun anymore, it’s painful and just accentuates the texture of my skin. I don’t remember what my face looks like or what color my skin is. Any other effort to look good I feel is in vain. My self esteem has never been so incredibly incredibly low. Everyone around me has clear skin. I don’t know why I’m posting this, I definitely don’t want pity. I guess hearing similar experiences and advice on how to cope will help. Thank you

[Personal] Dark/Olive Indian Ladies! My story: Hyperpigmentation and Scarring
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey everyone! I'm a longtime lurker in this sub. About 2 years ago (Summer 2016), I got a huge waxing burn on my face. It was absolutely terrible. I started looking into remedies to fix it and went to a dermatologist that prescribed some heavy duty hydroquinone cream. It cost me about ~$100-200 and BLEACHED my face (no joke). I wear 415 in Lancome Teint Idole foundation and G+60 in Cover Fx, to give an idea of how dark I am.I also have dry/dehydrated skin and an oily nose/eyelids.I realized that I couldn't really go to a dermatologist for this--I'm dark skinned and all the dermatologists I knew are white. So, I put my battle armor on and decided to go to war with my hyperpigmented dark mark.At first, I bought everything Drunk Elephant. I got the C-Firma serum, Lala Retro Whipped Cream, and a couple other products. I hated all of them. Nothing worked. My dry skin somehow became even dryer! This was kind of like when Napoleon invaded Russia--a horrible idea with terrible consequences.Eventually with a lot of purchases and returns, TO/Sephora experimentation, and a couple tears, I finally got a routine down. See below:Cleanser: Cerave Hydrating Cleanser OR Sum:37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick OR Glossier Milky Jelly CleanswerIf I had to rank these, I would say Sum:37 is absolutely brilliant, but alas, it is out of stock everywhere currently. I'm using milky jelly now and I love it! Cerave is what I use when I'm on vacation and want to travel with a cleanser. I never own more than one of these at any time because if I fall down the "buy everything!" rabbit hole, I will never come out.Toner: Isntree Hydrating TonerRelatively cheap and effective. Can't say much more! This replaced The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid for me. I also tried the Hylamide Hyaluronic Acid and NIOD's Hyaluronic Acid complex. This is still better (and cheaper!).Exfoliators: The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% OR Paula's Choice BHA OR Sunday Riley's UFO OilWhen I was in the "ultra brightening and need all the care I can get stage" (see: early days of the dark black burn on my face), I used The Ordinary 10% Lactic Acid. Keep in mind that I have pretty thick skin--it can handle a lot of wear, and so I'm able to use a ridiculous amount of exfoliating products and not have reactions (I do not recommend going ham on the AHAs). I also tried NIOD's exfoliating serum and didn't really like it--it did nothing for my skin. I need that glow for the gods without a highlighter.Sometimes I get small breakouts and that's when I whip out the Paula's Choice BHA. It's super useful even though I have dry skin. I use the lotion formula.I've recently started "upgrading" my skincare (See: using expensive products that I know have only two upsides--luxurious texture + finish). I fell in love with Sunday Riley's UFO oil back when I tried the sample from Sephora and now I'm hooked. Send help for my poor, addicted self.Serums: See List BelowWhen I was originally trying to lighten my scar, I used The Ordinary's Alpha Arbutin and The Ordinary's Niacinamide. These were my secret weapons--my surprise attack against my dark spot. It stood no chance and went down faster than Troy after Agamemnoninvaded. Now that the mark is 100% gone, I use Sunday Riley's CEO Vitamin C Serum (guys, I haven't found another Vitamin C serum that compares) and I'm looking into a couple others, such as the iUNIK Propolis Serum.I've tried a couple other serums and I'd be happy to do a full on review if you're interested. The alpha arbutin from The Ordinary is one of those silent actors--you really don't know how big of a difference it makes until you stop using it. It took a long time for me to finally quit it because I felt it was one more unnecessary step in my already frantic morning ritual. I reincorporated it when I got another facial scar (my poor face :( ) and I have absolutely ZERO pigmentation around my new face scar, even though I had to get stitches for it AND I'm prone to hyperpigmentation. If you're dark skinned and struggling with hyperpigmentation, I highly, highly recommend this little serum.Oils!Oils terrified me for a long time. Being Indian, my mother would slather my hair in coconut oil and cover my face in Neem oil and make me wander around the house doing chores for 5 hours. It was borderline traumatizing. I ordered a couple different oils from The Ordinary just to check them out--first I got the Argan Oil and I was kinda like "eh, this is nice, but let's see if something is better!" and I got the Rosehip Oil and Marula Oil. Ironically, even though I have dry skin, my face was not thrilled with Marula oil and it showed it's displeasure by breaking out the day before a major photography event (*cue all the tears*). I went back to Argan Oil and realized that what I wanted was the airbrushed, Miranda-Kerr-Supermodel-Omg-I-eat-all-my-veggies look, which is just not realistic. After I adjusted my expectations, I realized my skin really loves Argan oil, so I still use The Ordinary's formula.MoisturizerOhhhhh boy. There's a huge list here. For the winter time, my HG moisturizer will always be Kate Somerville Dry Skin Saver. I've tried so many and loved so many too.-Lala Retro Whipped Cream from Drunk Elephant: Don't bother. Stuff was terrible for me. Clogged my pores and made me look far older than my early 20s.-Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream: This little baby packs a huge punch of niacinamide. When I was at war with the burn mark on my face, I used this religiously. It helped so much.- Josie Maran Whipped Argan Face Butter: I didn't want to love this because it's so expensive, but my skin LOVES argan oil and this was no different! It's just such a beautifully formulated cream and the texture is absolutely heavenly. A little goes a long way.Sunscreen: Murad City Age Sunscreen. My soulmate, Bae. HG. Godsend. Happy ending (*badoom* *tshhh*). Whatever you want to call it, this is the one constant through my entire routine. I didn't want to use a chemical sunscreen and I wanted all the benefits of an awesome physical sunscreen without the whitecast. This is the ONLY physical sunscreen on the market I have found that works on my dark skin. I love it and I've repurchased it roughly 5-6 times. I cut my bottle in half when I can no longer squeeze it out and scoop it out because this stuff is expensive and I'm not wasting a drop. For any dark skinned ladies out there, please go for this sunscreen if it's affordable. It is so, so good. The peach tint hides everything and it even brightens my skin. I credit this with destroying most of my hyperpigmentation--It led the vanguard in my little war.So, what am I doing now that the war is won? Simple, I'm just enjoying skincare. I love this sub, the different YouTube channels I follow, and helping other people customize routines. I'm super ingredients focused--and I took a lot of college-level chemistry courses back in the day so I follow most papers relatively easily. Below is my current routine. [Review] German SCAs: I tested dm's new sunscreen so you don't have to buy it
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Went to my local dm yesterday and spotted large displays with their new sunscreen called Sundance Sonnenfluid. It costs between 3.95 - 4.95€ and comes in 4 varieties: SPF 30, SPF 50, anti pollution SPF 30, and anti pollution SPF 50. They are all waterproof and the regular ones are advertised for daily use as a makeup base and they are supposed to have a matte finish. I only bought the regular SPF 50 one but they all had a similar texture when I tested them in the store (Though the regular one is a bit more yellow-ish).First impression? It has a very strong scent, kinda like the other Sundance products or Nivea sunscreen. Second impression: holy hell, you really have to work that sunscreen into your skin. It leaves a slight white cast (and I'm ghostly pale) though it will disappear after a few minutes. The sunscreen feels okay on the skin. Not as light as Asian sunscreens but not horribly sticky either. dm claims that the sunscreen leaves a matte finish. Just no. I have super dry skin and my face was glowing, probably looks like an oil spill if you have normal/oily skin. But ok, I decided to continue and waited a few minutes till I put on my Missha bb cream. Here is where the trouble really started. I usually just apply the bb cream with my fingers and it never looks streaky or uneven. I looked like a fricking zebra. Or a 10-year old who applied way too much foundation for the very first time. It just wouldn't sink into the skin and kinda looked like a mask. It looked okay-ish after I blended it out with my beautyblender. But that only lasted for like 30 minutes till the creasing began. And I'm talking "I partied in a sauna for the last 24h"-creasing. Not a cute look.TL;DR It's a solid (and cheap) option for the beach or makeup free days when you don't care that much about appearance but a horrible horrible option for daily use under makeup. I will not repurchase this sunscreen

[Personal] What Are Some Little Changes You've Made?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I was curious what small changes you guys have done to improve your skin or your routine in general. I have made a few tiny changes that have shown to make a huge difference! I started using my hands to cleanse my face rather than a scrub brush/sponge that I'd been using my whole life (not the same sponge, but the same kind haha). I saw the biggest difference with that; it felt better and sometimes I would see results in a day. I also started using a moisturizer with spf in the morning. Another thing I've done is wash a stuffed animal I snuggle with at night. Yes, 23 and still snuggling him. I had had a terrible breakout on my left cheek for like 6 months and it wasn't until I switched sides that I realized it was him. I should have known since I hadn't washed him for 8 years (gross, I know). The most recent thing I've done is spray my pillows with thayers witch hazel before bed. I think it's made my pillow cases last longer before I need to switch or wash them, but I dont know for sure. Since I've been sober I've seen less breakouts and a brighter complexion. Oh and one more; I no longer let my dog lick my face. I believe him (and the dogs at my work) were hindering my products since they were just licking them off.So, what have you guys done? I'm interested and would love to hear some stuff! (:

[personal] Seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow because I'm really really embarassed of my acne that I'm planning to stop college.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I aam a 20 year old guy in college living in a 3rd world country in Asia. I started to have more acne just this january due to using products recklessly. I am a beginner so I was very excited that I bought several products and recklessly tried a BHA among other products. My face is now a mess and I'm so depressed, distressed and anxious because of it. I always had self-esteem issues but now my confidence has dropped to zero. I constantly check the mirror and I feel like crying whenever I see my ugly face. Everytime I feel a bump that may be a potential pimple, I feel very anxious and depressed. It's so hard when you just can't stop thinking about your acne every minute of everyday, from the moment I wake up to the time I lay on my bed at night. I now find it hard to sleep and would only get 4 to 5 hours of sleep everyday. I only stayed at home the whole summer and would only get out of the house during night time to avoid being clearly seen by people. I am so embarassed of my face that I started to avoid some friends and family members. Classes are starting a couple of weeks from now and I don't think I could go on with college. I have no friends in school which makes it harder for me. I've seen people with acne and they're still happy despite of it. I wish I didn't care about my acne and could could happily go on with life. I don't know if someone will still be able to fall in love with me having this ugly face. So I'm seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow but I'm not sure if I should see one. Do you guys think I should go or should I cancel my appointment? And for those who are also struggling with acne, I would be really grateful if you could share what helps you move forward. Thank you so much for reading.

[Product Question] Potentially NSFW question regarding Accutane
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Females who have used Accutane: Did it affect your natural vaginal lubrication? Once off Accutane did it go back to normal?I’ve read that while you are on Accutane it can happen which scares me but I’m more scared of it lasting after I’m off it. I can put up with a few months of being dry but I don’t know if I’m willing to risk it long term.

[Acne] Dairy gives me acne that can be treated with anti-fungal medication.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I get cystic acne from dairy, and it seems the only treatment is anti-fungal medication, and I also do not eat any dairy any more. I also get dandruff, so I use head and shoulders for that. It has taken me like 7 years to really figure this out, but so glad I did! I thought I would share my (short) story here so it may benefit someone here. I did get the ideas from this sub and think recirculating them is important!

[Personal] I've had a (small) breakthrough!!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Y'all. I have seen the light, I have cracked the code that is my skin, I - as the kids say - DID. THAT.A couple days ago I used a clay mask which I've used twice before, but I just moved to a drier climate and didn't realize how much my skin would dry out. So, after using this clay mask, my skin became as dry as the Sahara Desert, Death Valley, and my DMs combined. When I realized that I would need to essentially babysit my ~tender~ skin for the next few days, I went into full-on damage control. I cut out everything except moisturizer and sunscreen, I broke out the humidifier, and for the first time ever, I gave in to the slug life. After two days of intense hydration and some perusing of this sub, I realized my skin has been dehydrated this whole. damn. time. My redness, oily areas, acne scars, and active breakouts have improved after one day of almost comical levels of hydration, and even though my skin still feels tight, it hasn't looked this good in two years.None of my friends are really into skincare as much as I am, and I just really wanted to share my epiphany, so thanks for being such a great community - you're truly the best. Onward and upward!

[Misc] When brands are basically robbing their customer. (x-post /DIYBeauty)
Beauty Tips For Body Care
One of my hobbies is to go through expensive skincare brands' ingredients list just to see if I could formulate them at home and how much it would cost me vs buying directly from them.Obviously, I wouldn't try to formulate DE Protini at home since buying (and finding) all those peptides would be costlier and much more time consuming than just buying from DE directly... not to mention trying to understand at which percentage to add which peptide... It would get too confusing for me. But then there are these simple formulas that are just oils or water and a few extracts that are very doable at home. They're obviously sold at a higher price than it would cost to make them at home but it's okay, brands have to pay their chemists, marketing etc. But there's a difference in making a product for $5 and selling it for $60 compared to making a product for $5 and selling it for $300. The latter is nothing short of robbery IMO. Okay, 'robbery' might be too extreme but I really can't think of another word. I might edit and change it when I'm less mad and I've gotten over this absurd product that I'm about to talk about next.My inspiration for this post is this Hyaluronic Acid Serum by Dr. Barbara Sturm. She sells it for $300. Maybe it's chock full of expensive extracts, peptides and what not? Nope. This is the INCI:WaterButylene GlycolLactobacillus/Portulaca Oleracea Ferment ExtractPhenoxyethanolSodium HyaluronateEthylhexylglycerinPotassium SorbateLeuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment FiltrateEight ingredients - four of which are preservatives and one is water.Let's see how much this would cost to make at home. Instead of the preservatives she used, I'll use Liquid Germall Plus. The rest is basically the same.IngredientPriceCost for 100gWater////5% Butylene Glycol$4.25 for 4oz/113g$0.185% Lactobacillus/Portulaca Oleracea Ferment Extract$18.85 for 2oz/57g$1.651% Sodium Hyaluronate$4.45 for 1g$4.450.50% Liquid Germall Plus$3.49 for 1.25oz/35g$0.04Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment FiltrateIt preserves the extract.//Total: $6.32/3 $2.20 to make approx 30g at home! Let's not forget that brands have access to wholesale prices and here I calculated the costs from the smallest quantity available which is usually more expensive than buying a larger quantity.I would love to hear examples of similar products and your thoughts on them.

[EMPTY] [REVIEW] Pixi Glow Tonic
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I purchased a bottle of Pixi Glow Tonic while on vacation. I had brought The Ordinary Glycolic Acid toner with me, but on my first day there, it was burning my face (not due to sun exposure, not really sure what the problem was honestly). I knew I needed something more gentle so grabbed the Pixi from Target. The bottle lasted from mid-March to mid-May with almost twice daily use (didn't always use it twice a day, some days I did not use it at all to give my skin a break). I originally was putting it on a cotton pad and was sweeping that across my face. Towards the end I decided to just put the product in my palm and pat it into my skin.FeelFeels great on the skin. It did not dry out my skin or leave my skin feeling tacky. I did not experience any sensitivity with this product.ResultsI don't have a lot of pigmentation issues but I would say using this in conjunction with a Vitamin C helped with redness left from acne. Oddly enough, it cleared up a rash I had on my neck. I have no idea what caused the rash, and nothing was helping it (antibiotic creams, other treatments for rashes, just using moisturizer) until I only applied the glow tonic to my neck. A weird but welcome result!IngredientsThis has 5% glycolic acid, aloe leaf juice, and witch hazel. Take note that it does have fragrance and dye in it, if those are things that bother you!PackagingI love the bottle. It is easy to control how much product you want dispensed. I had the 100 mL bottle.Repurchase?Yes I would repurchase. However, I have other acid products to use up before I can make my way back to this product.

...and I got $100 in store credit! My family doesn't understand my excitement. My before picture was actually at the height of my depression and I have since gotten myself out of that black hole. It does get better! I am in no way saying that skincare put my depression into remission - it was the internal work that I've been doing in my 12 steps. The obsession of picking my skin was relieved and obviously that led to a better complexion. My before/after submissionThis is todaySo I celebrated by doing a 15% TCA peel and adding a ton to my cart! Wahoo!Just wanted to show my progress and pat myself on the back. Thanks for reading!

[Product Question] Differin - Now that it has been OTC for a while now, please share your experience!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Differin is now widely available without a prescription, and while a lot of the reviews out there cover use in the few weeks/months after it was released, I'm hoping those of you who have experiences would share with us!Did you feel like it worked for your (acne, closed comedones, etc.)? Did you keep using it? Stop using it?Was there something you found worked BETTER than Differin?Thank you for adding to the discussion!

[product question] so about castor oil.....
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I apply castor oil to my brows and lashes before bed & in the morning if I know I'll be home all day. The oil travels from my lashes to my lids & under my eye where I massage the excess in. I've found that when I do that, my under eye discoloration is gone. Is there any correlation?

[Routine Help] Transitioning to a nomadic lifestyle and seeking advice on products
Beauty Tips For Body Care
My partner and I are trying to transition to a nomadic lifestyle. Unfortunately, that means I can't rely on having certain products with me all the time. Luckily I have managed to somewhat fix my skin. I used to have combination skin, with flaky cheeks and an overly oily T-zone. Now I can wash my face without moisturising and it feels okay, neither oily nor dry. My current routine varies between using the Simple face wash and a bar of coconut/olive oil/rosewater soap that my housemate and I made. So: AM is bar soap, L300 hydrating serum, Estelle & Thilde day cream, light sunscreen PM is Simple face wash, L300 hydrating serum, Estelle & Thilde night cream, eye cream. Does anyone have experience switching over to olive oil? I think the E&T cream is causing some irritation (I didn't notice it had perfume when I bought it). Is there anyone who has a similar experience switching to a nomadic lifestyle?

[Misc] Thoguht I'd share my notes on products I've tried in the past year or so
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have tried a lot of products lately - more than I thought I had, to be honest, and it almost seems a little crazy now that I have them all in my inventory spreadsheet.(I started taking notes in a Google spreadsheet after seeing someone else's and copying it, but I can't seem to find that person again. Anyway, thank you!)I realized that my notes might be helpful for some of you, as they are basically mini reviews and info on whether or not I would repurchase the products I've tried.NB: I am from Norway, and though I buy skincare from a lot of different countries, a couple of these are only avalible in Skandinavia. Also, my skin type is normal to dry, and dry in the winter months. I get breakouts now and then if I use a product my skin doesn't like, but I don't consider myself very breakout prone. My routine changes all the time, but the AM and PM routines in the spreadsheet are my current routines. I have kp on my cheeks and upper arms, so I use products to help with skin texture and redness. The products in my routine really help a lot.Feel free to ask questions about any of the products, I'll answer when I have the time!Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14o7h7C2-g4xmbGspsvpB-ebKENr8qbZEEV8uBcnPLRs/edit?usp=drivesdkEdit: sorry about the typo in the title. [Personal] Feeling so down and embarrassed about my skin. Would love advice.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm in my 30's and I still have really bad acne. Sometimes my face is clear, but when I develop a pimple, it is BAD: cystic, raised, brutally red, and takes months to go down - and then it leaves a bright red mark in its wake. You know the type. I am working with a dermatologist and have a plan in place, but there is some acne that has been on my face for literally years. No one else I know in my age range has skin like mine. All of my friends and coworkers are acne-free so I feel particularly embarrassed about my condition.I know that supposedly people don't notice acne or whatever, but honestly there's no way you could miss my blemishes, even when they're covered up. Because of this, I plan meet-ups with friends around my skin and I never go out when it's really bad. I'm thinking of calling in sick to work too.I know this is unhealthy behavior and I want to stop it. I want to care less about my skin and more about important issues beyond me. But looking in the mirror often reduces me to tears. I have so much shame - and self hatred- that comes from my blemished skin. And it feels all-consuming.If anyone else out there has felt down about their skin and wants to commiserate, I'm all ears. Or if you have advice for me about how to stop ruminating about my bad skin and think of other things, I would appreciate that very much too.

[MISC] I have really dry skin but love taking hot showers and this one trick has helped me a lot!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have always loved hot showers, and while I have dialed down the temperature recently in an attempt to wean off them, I just love them. I KNOW its not good for my skin but for me, anything below scalding is lukewarm. Even though I never let the water touch my face I used to get bright red cheeks after every shower, which meant I would only shower at night right before bed.I read a post on this subreddit some time ago about someone using sheet masks while they shower to protect their skin from drying out, and I had a bit of a lightbulb moment.Ive since been applying a generous layer of vaseline/evening primrose oil to my face BEFORE I shower, with the idea that it forms an oily barrier between my skin and the water. (Even though I keep my face out of the hot water, maybe the steam or something was drying it out?)This has actually helped my skin so much and my face is so much less dry and red after showering, I thought I would share!TLDR; Put a protective layer on your face before you shower and it wont be so dry after.

The product that is touted as liquid gold among skincare enthusiasts, but neglected among... well, virtually everyone else. There's a lot I could explain on the topic of sunscreen, but being as much of it is pretty deep in the weeds, I will attempt to cut through a lot of the extra in this post and give you the simplified "how it works" version, as well as attempt to convince you why you should give sunscreen a try if you aren't using it already.First though, I'd like to alleviate some feelings I have on the topic.Frequently, on skincare blogs and in skincare communities, sunscreen is touted as such a necessity that it is considered a pearl-clutching offense to even leave the house without it. Most sun damage is cumulative, and absolutely no one should be mocked for avoiding actual cancer, but there is a point where the insistence of some encroaches on the comfort of others. That is to say that while sunscreen is incredible, I am by no means pushing the usage of sunscreen on everyone. I understand that the filters bother some people, can aggravate existing conditions, and that sometimes... life happens. We don't always have a bottle of sunscreen around when we need to dash out of the house. We don't always want to slather it on before sitting outside to read a book. I certainly don't.And that's okay. Do what makes you comfortable, and live your life. Just be reasonable and safe about it.Whew.With that out of the way, let's dive right in, shall we?Introduction to UV RadiationYou may remember the electromagnetic spectrum from science class and learning about radiation, such as light, heat, and sound. In short, it's energy that's moving. Leaving out a large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for relevancy's sake, there is light that we can see (known as the visible spectrum) as well as ultraviolet radiation. The sun emits three types of invisible ultraviolet radiation known as UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UVC is filtered out completely by the ozone layer of the Earth's atmosphere, but both UVB and UVA can reach the surface. While that may not seem so bad, climate change and depletion of the ozone layer has lead to an increase in UV radiation at the surface. As you may remember from the previous post, the epidermis is comprised of several layers, including the stratum basal. This layer is enriched with epidermal stem cells (cells that can give rise to other cells of the same type), and give life to all epidermal structures, including sweat and oil glands as well as hair follicles. The layer beneath the stratum basal -- the dermis -- is also composed of stem cells that give rise to collagen and immune cells. These stem cells are essential to the skin as one of the systems of the body with a high rate of cell turnover. When UVB radiation reaches our skin, our skin cells absorb the photons from the radiation, warping the DNA, rearranging nucleotides, and ultimately leading to defects. This damage causes a depletion of the epidermal stem cells, and ultimately, skin aging. [4] UVA can reach deeper into the skin, causing the most damage to our stem cells responsible for elasticity. This is why UVA damage is sometimes referred to as UV-Aging (with UVB as UV-Burning).The skin attempts to counteract this damage by creating melanin (the pigment responsible for the color of our hair, skin, and eyes). Think of melanin as little umbrellas, attempting to shade the skin cells from the sun.As sun exposure continues, the skin eventually begins to burn -- the cells so damaged that they flake away and are discarded by the skin. The inflammation that follows is the presence of blood flow to the effected regions. This is why even tanning -- whether sun or tanning bed -- is skin damage.Surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly), this damage begins to add up.Visualizing Sun DamageYou may have seen the photo of the truck driver or even the video of what skin looks like in ultraviolet.VISUALIZING SUN DAMAGEThe epidermis thickens as a result of long-term exposure. The dermis loses elasticity. Inflammation occurs, parching the skin of essential moisture. This cascade of effects not only shows up later as wrinkles, but also can worsen eczema, acne, rosacea, or any other condition aggravated by dryness or inflammation. And if we burn more than five times in our lives, our risk of skin cancer is doubled. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 95% of melanoma cases are attributable to UV exposure. It is the most common type of cancer in the United States, with current estimates at 1 in 5 Americans developing skin cancer in their lifetime (or 9500 people every day). [1] You're at an even higher risk of skin cancer on the driver's side of your body, due to exposure while driving. [3]If this isn't enough, we can see changes in the structure of skin and it's cells. According to a blog post by KindOfStephen, a group of researchers (with the funding of La Roche Posay) looked at the effects of UVB exposure on skin protected with high SPF (sun protection factor) and UVAPF (UVA protection factor) sunscreen as well as skin that was not protected. To quote directly from KindOfStephen's post: "What they found was that doses of UVB that caused long-lasting erythema (redness) caused morphological changes in the skin. Changes observed were spongiosis (abnormal accumulation of fluid), microvesicles, sunburn cells, and blood vessel dilation. None of these were observed in skin that was protected by the sunscreen." [2]Sunscreen FiltersSo now that you know how ultraviolet radiation affects skin cells and you want to dip your toe into the sunscreen world, where do you even start? There are so many filters, so many ingredients, and you've even heard about sunscreen causing coral bleaching. Don't worry, I'm going to get into these things, but first let's break down the filters. There are a large number of sunscreen filters available across the world. In the US there are only 16 approved filters, but only 8 are used, and out of that, only 2 of those protect from UVA.Now you might be asking, "Wait, only two protect from UVA? I thought all sunscreen just protected me from the sun's UV rays?" You wouldn't be alone in this assumption. Even I thought this up until about 10 years ago.Unfortunately, the United States doesn't really have guidelines around UVA protection, unlike many other countries. In Asian sunscreens, the level of UVA protection is usually denoted by a PPD (persistent pigment darkening) rating, represented with plus symbols, such as ++++. In the EU and Canada, this is is simply a number. The higher the number (or the higher the number of plus symbols), the better the protection from UVA rays. Some sunscreen brands in the EU list their SPF along with the PPD value, ex. SPF 100/PPD 40. In the United States, we largely have to guess based on the percentage of listed filters or simply import them from other countries. I generally recommend sunscreens with high percentages of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for this reason.LISA ELDRIDGE ON SUNSCREEN RECOMMENDATIONSBelow I've created a chart with the most common sunscreen filters you can get your hands on, along with their range, and some additional notes. For a more complete list of sunscreen filters, please refer to Skinacea's UV Filters Chart [5]. I've also included two of the sunscreens implicated in the killing or bleaching of coral. For a more complete list of that, please check out this BadgerBalm article [6].CHARTNow I know what you're thinking: why inorganic and organic? And furthermore, I thought zinc oxide and titanium dioxide were organic sunscreens and not the chemical variety. The difference between these types of filters can be defined by chemistry. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide do not contain carbon -- they're made of metal and oxygen, thus classified as inorganic. [7] However, both inorganic and organic filters work roughly the same -- by absorbing the energy, bending, and eventually relaxing. Some filters do this better than others. For instance, avobenzone, as I noted above, must be stabilized by other filters. Instead of relaxing, avobenzone changes structure and breaks down, becoming more irritating to the skin. This is generally referred to as photostability, and while it is not typically harmful to wear a sunscreen that is unstable, it is just a bit of a pain, requiring re-application often and correctly to keep getting the amount of protection on the bottle.Speaking of that protection, how do you know you're even applying sunscreen right, or how much you should be using? Thankfully, science has an answer for just about everything.Sunscreen Application and CareMost sunscreens need to create a film over the skin in order to work effectively. This is particularly important for inorganic sunscreens, which are particle suspensions. This means you should be applying them evenly to get the best coverage and protection. Wait before applying any makeup to allow the sunscreen to dry down a bit and form a coating. You also need to be applying the right amount to get the protection listed on the bottle. Yes, this even means your foundation or BB cream (which you should not be relying on makeup for sunscreen in the first place). Here's a general guideline on how much you should be using on each portion of your body:1/4" teaspoon of sunscreenFace: 1/4 teaspoon of sunscreenNeck (front and back): 1/4 teaspoon of sunscreenArms: 1/2 teaspoon of sunscreen per armLegs: 1 teaspoon of sunscreen per legChest: 1 teaspoon of sunscreenBack: 1 teaspoon of sunscreenApplying less gives you less protection than listed on the bottle. For spray sunscreens, you need to apply several thin layers. Make sure to rub in each layer to avoid the streaky sunburn.VISUALIZING THE AMOUNT FOR THE FACE - Credit SkinaceaSunscreens also have a shelf life of only about 3 years. Anything older than that should be tossed. Also be sure to keep your sunscreen in a cool place -- even when at the beach. High temperatures of cars or direct sun will break down your sunscreen and render it less effective.Lastly, re-apply your sunscreen when you are sweating or swimming. I know this is a pain, but if the two times I've burnt extremely bad in my life have taught me anything, it's that the inability to sleep due to pain from sunburns can make the healing period one of the longest sets of weeks in your life.Sunscreen MythsDarker skinned people don't need sunscreen because they don't burn. While it is true that caucasians have a higher risk of developing melanoma than the general population, skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of skin color. In fact, skin cancer in patients with skin of color is often diagnosed in its later stages, when it’s more difficult to treat. They're also less likely than Caucasian patients to survive melanoma, and are more prone to skin cancer in areas that aren't commonly exposed to the sun, including under the nails. [1]Inorganic reflect sun rays, while organic filters absorb them. Both classes of filters work much the same, stretching, absorbing, and eventually releasing the energy. There is very little that is "reflected," though inorganic sunscreens do have flashback (white cast under flash photography) due to their ability to reflect energy above the UV spectrum. [7]Inorganic sunscreen sits on the skin while organic sunscreens absorb. KindOfStephen put this best: "... if we want to protect ourselves from the rain we need to hold the umbrella above our heads. Sunscreens work the same way, you want them to absorb the energy before they can reach our skin cells, particularly the living cells. The most effective way for this to be done is to have them on the surface of the skin in a continuous and even layer." [7]Sunscreens need time to activate on the skin. Sunscreens absorb UV due to their chemical makeup, not due to a chemical reaction that takes place on the skin.If I wear sunscreen, I won't get adequate vitamin D. Vitamin D is very important to our bodies, and many people are deficient in it. However, thanks to the many well-formulated vitamin D supplements on the market today, we can get D3 just as efficiently as if we were sitting in the sun for an hour. Check with your doctor before taking any supplements. Glass blocks all UV. Glass only filters UVB rays, so you still must wear sunscreen to be protected from the most harmful rays -- UVA.General Sunscreen GuidelinesApply your sunscreen after moisturizer and before makeup. Think of it as the barrier that protects your skin from the outside. I typically apply my sunscreen as the last step in my AM routine and do my eye makeup while I wait for it to sink in.Apply your sunscreen under your eyes. Avoid the top of the lid, which can get oily and cause the sunscreen to "run" into your eyes later in the day. Protection of the delicate undereye area prevents darkening that can look similar to undereye circles, as well as premature aging and wrinkles.Wear sunscreen, not moisturizer with SPF or makeup with SPF. As I mentioned above, sunscreen in moisturizer or makeup is not adequate.Don't neglect your driver's side. It's easy to forget about our bodies, but as I mentioned, skin cancer is especially common on the driver's side of the body. Avoid this with sunscreen, UV protective clothing, or special UV tinting.Wear at least SPF 30, but don't worry about trying to wear SPF 100. There is very little difference between the amount of protection that SPF 30 provides versus SPF 100, when applied correctly. For example, SPF 30 blocks nearly 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks an estimated 98% of UVB rays. [10] On top of this, higher SPF values mean more filters, which can irritate some skin. Good guidelines are at least SPF 30 but no more than SPF 50.Wear the highest amount of SPF you can tolerate. For some, this is SPF 15, and that's okay. Whatever your skin can tolerate is better than nothing at all. When in doubt, wear a hat. There are plenty of UV-protective clothing options (and UV-blocking umbrellas!) on the market today. When I know I am going to be out in the sun for a long period of time, I will frequently bring a hat with me in addition to my sunscreen.Wear sunscreen and avoid the sun if you're especially sun sensitive. This means skin with acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, or under the treatment of photo-sensitizing (sun sensitivity) ingredients like retinol, retinoids, isotretinoin (Accutane), benzoyl peroxide, AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid, and topical steroids (such as triamcinolone).Sources:American Academy of Dermatology - Skin CancerKind of Stephen - Visualizing how a daily sunscreen can protect the skin from UV damageStudy: Driving May Contribute to Left-Side Skin CancersUltraviolet Radiation-Induced Skin Aging: The Role of DNA Damage and Oxidative Stress in Epidermal Stem Cell Damage Mediated Skin AgingSkinacea - UV Filters Chart: Sunscreen Active IngredientsBadgerBalm - Coral Reef Friendly / Reef Safe SunscreenKind of Stephen - “Physical” vs. “chemical” sunscreens and other sunscreen mythsSkinacea - How much sunscreen should I apply? The Derm Blog - Is that sunscreen in your car still good?Skin Cancer Foundation - Does a higher SPF sunscreen always protect your skin better?Further Reading:Evaluating Your Routine: CleansersEvaluating Your Routine: MoisturizersList of Biodegradable Reef-Safe Sunscreens

[Humour] My eight year old student is already a skincare addict
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I looked over in class yesterday and one of my eight year old students had put green toy slime all over her face like a mask and was sitting back in her chair with her eyes closed, chilling. We’re winding down for the school year so it was a relaxed class. I thought it was hilarious so I didn’t say anything to her.I looked over a while later and she had removed her “mask” and was squirting her face with mist water from a recycled bottle.I’m assuming her mother has an epic skincare routine.

My eyelids will be forever grateful 💘Ingredients:Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Water, Cyclomethicone, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Pentylene Glycol, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, Betaine, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Panthenol, Glycerin, Myristamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Allantoin, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, p-Anisic Acid, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Bisabolol, Sodium Hydroxide, Polygonum Fagopyrum (Buckwheat) Seed Extract, Tocopherol, Avena Sativa (Oat) Bran Extract.

[Acne] How I cleared my acne (1 year progress, no antibiotics)
Beauty Tips For Body Care
(I'm not sure how to add a photo of before and after, I will try and add it in the comments later.)Hi, I'm 22 years old, oily skin (which was compromised for a long time and was sensitive and dehydrated) and it's been several months since I'm finally acne-free. Since I was a very regular reddit skincare addict I thought I'd share my progress and what actually helped my skin, I hope I can help someone else, because I know the struggle is real.a little historyAs mentioned I was very interested in everything skincare related and was willing to try ANYTHING to get rid of my acne. I've had severe acne since I was 15. I did go to many dermatologists and estheticians in my teenage years, my parents paid hundreds if not thousands for the recommended products and procedures, NOTHING helped. I later moved to western Europe and spent again excessive amounts of money for drugstore products, pharmacy cosmetics (Clinique, Avene etc), online orders (Korean websites, The Ordinary etc.), I tried food regiments, natural recipes, what not, I must’ve tried everything anyone recommended on reddit, instagram, forums. The only results I got from 2 years experimenting was worse acne, very bad scarring and compromised skin barrier. My skin was always red, dry, and weirdly feeling.actual tipsSo to get to the point - I then gave up and stopped using anything, stopped washing my face (yes, even with water), just let it be. It took weeks for my skin to calm down. The things I then started doing and currently keep doing, because this is what works for me, are the following:*I take vitamins. Just regular vitamins, not specifically targeting anything. From what I’ve read the ingredients that help are C, B3, B6, Zink, Biotin. I also take Omega 3 now and then. *I drink VERY MUCH WATER. I know everyone says it and I used to not take this advice because I was stupid, but drinking much water every day, all the time, really made a difference. *I started drinking lactose free milk. I love milk and I tried to cut it off my diet completely and failed, so I turned to lactose free milk and even though I thought it’s the hormones in milk that are bad, apparently the lactose also had a fault, I don’t know. *I don’t wash my face with water in the morning. I gently clean it with a cotton pad soaked in pure rose water. *I wear SUNSCREEN every single day. *I wear makeup as usual, I even use a high coverage foundation, Im having no problems with it, as long as I clean my face with a micellar water and an oil and soap free gentle face wash ( I still use drugstore products, but I’ve checked all ingredients so that there isn’t anything harmful to me or my skin). I apply rosewater again. Afterwards I apply Vitamin C serum and a very basic drugstore moisturiser. *I do a chemical peel (10% AHA and 2% BHA) once or twice a week. *I do a white clay mask (I mix it myself with distilled water and white clay) once or twice a week after a shower.I still have some bad scarring, I think it can only go away with a laser, but aside from 1-2 pimples when it’s that time of the month, my skin has been staying clear.Sorry for the long post but I really hope this can someone out.

[Skin concern] NSFW Cysts and pimple like things covering my buttocks
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey r/SkincareaddictionFirst up here is the pic NSFW (I did warn you):https://m.imgur.com/a/Pp2PrntSo for the information...I am 20 years old, Male, 6 ft, 100 kg. I've had this issue for the past 4 years, though it has gotten worse in past two years. It's all over my buttocks and spreading to my thighs - I haven't visited a doctor because I'm to embarrassed even though I know I should (also alt account)No other medical conditions, though I notice I sweat alot by buttocks area and my underwear can become wet.I do sit alot as I work in office job.I have recently started working out twice a week. Since this condition started, I did put on alot of weight, which is why I'm trying to get rid of it.It looks far worse when the area is heated, eg after a shower or gym.So I have had this issue for around 4 years or so. It started with large boil like things which when squeezed gave off a yellow to white puss and large amounts of blood.I have large bumps and loads of little red dots. It doesn't hurt unless one gets very big, usually they go down an than come back up again.I also sometimes have mild face acne, but nothing compares to what my buttocks looks like. I have started trying to apply tea tree oil, but may be to early to share progress (done nothing yet). I always scrub it with soap and water in the hopes that it will dissappear but it never does. It's incrediblely unsightly and hope someone can help!

[PSA] Another cautionary tale to use sunscreen!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
https://imgur.com/gallery/zt7BwrvHere is a photo collage of my right forearm near my elbow. In July 2016 I told my doctor I needed a referral to a derm because my family has a solid history of melanoma and I had a suspicious mole. He (a physician’s assistant as my doctor was out for surgery) said it was probably okay according to what his elderly mother’s melanoma looked like. So professional, right?! Thankfully I insisted on a referral anyway, which he finally gave after telling me this story about his mom neglecting her moles forever and getting terminal cancer. I was trying to avoid that, so here I was. I went to the derm and after cutting it laterally said I had stage 1a melanoma (very early). It freaked me out a little because they said I would need surgery to cut a circle around the mole and down to the muscle. Only one surgery was necessary, I’m all good now, but the stitches were a real drag. Now I have this wicked scar and a dent in my arm. I told my students it was from a shark bite. Lol
