[B&A] OCM progress after 4 months
Beauty Tips For Body Care
https://imgur.com/a/bTO1jThis is an update to my previous post. Now I have a close-up After picture.Around March of this year, plagued by giant, inflamed acne all over my cheeks and a chin full of closed comedones, I came to this subreddit for answers. I am happy to say that after four months of steady treatment and a little experimentation, my skin has improved significantly! And my routine is so simple:Note: I am not endorsing Bio Oil over other mineral oil. I simply had a bottle lying around that I needed to use.AMOil cleanse with 5 drops (~1/4 tsp) Bio Oil (or baby oil)+ 1 tiny drop tea tree oilPMOil cleanse with same formulaWeeklyAztec Healing Clay mask, prepared with apple cider vinegarAs NeededCetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15I have dry-normal type skin.My skin is so much better, and my CCs are almost gone. Some failed products from my experiment:Stridex in the red box (did nothing)Clean and Clear Persagel 10% BP (did nothing and dried out my skin)Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55 with helioplex (irritated my skin)Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle cream with Retinol (did nothing)I am so grateful to this subreddit for my progress!

[Skin Concern] Severe Keratosis Pilaris Spreading to Chest and Back
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've always had keratosis pilaris growing up, but lately it's been getting way worse. I used to just have it on my arms, but now it's spread to my back and chest. I've already tried using AmLactin, but my keratosis is resistant to that. I've seen a dermatologist, but he shrugged when I asked for something more than just AmLactin. I'm using the Glytone KP kit with the loofa as of right now. Is there any kind of steroid medication or any other solution for me to try? I have Fitzpatrick Type II skin. I've also used hydrocortisone to try and get rid of the redness. I've also used Gold Bond Cream, which really controls the texture of it really well. I really want to get rid of the red dots if I can. If it helps, I know I got it from my mom. I'm male. Thanks for the help.Photos:http://imgur.com/a/rWawc

[Acne] [Routine Help] I feel like I'm forced to choose between dehydrated skin and acne, no matter the routine.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi guys! I've been lurking here for a couple years now, but somehow I still feel completely lost in skincare routines...With my skin I feel like I can only choose between having extremely dehydrated, scaly skin - or acne.I have been struggling with blemished/acne skin for almost 10 years now.My most recent 'experiment' was doing OCM (I did jojoba + tea tree for 3 months). I then stopped OCM because I felt it made my acne worse, switched back to using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, but now my skin has just gotten a lot drier. Here's how my skin looks now.BTW the stuff in my neck is new!! :( Not cool...I went to my doctor two times. The first time he prescribed me some sort of tonic that strongly smelled of alcohol, which apparently is normally used to treat infected skin. This had no effect on my skin. I went back and he prescribed me an ointment to treat rosacea (I have no idea why?!) and obviously this did not help either. I wanted him to refer me to a dermatologist but I guess he doesn't think my case is bad enough for that. What I have tried:Salycilic acid foam cleanser (I don't know the percentage): this made my skin very dryBenzoyl peroxide exfoliant (nor BHA or AHA, also don't know the percentage): I'm still using this irregularly, but it has no effect on my acneOvernight moisturizer + vaseline: didn't help with dryness caused by foam cleansersMy current routine:AM: Splash of water under the shower - moisturizer - BB CreamPM: Gentle cleanser - moisturizer - vaselineOnce a week: Exfoliate with benzoyl peroxide - red clay maskQuestions I have:What is this time of acne called (or can this even be called acne)?Do I need to see a dermatologist? What type of cleanser would you recommend that treats my blemishes but doesn't dry the skin out? What are some good websites that ship products to the Netherlands (at an affordable price)? There are so many product mentionings here that are not available in my country.Thank you all very much for reading!

[PSA] Set sunscreen with loose powder to prevent eye irritation
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Okay so there was a humour post on here recently about how sunscreen burns like wildfire if it gets in your eyes. If you're not willing to make the switch to mineral sunscreen, use a loose finishing powder (you can use tinted or transucent) to set the sunscreen and you will be tear-free.One caveat: setting powder won't help much if you decide to go jogging in 35C degree heat or something or take a dip in the water. Anytime you get really sweaty/wet you'll still run the risk of getting it in your eyes. Hopefully, it's still useful for everyday sunscreen application for some of you.

[Research] Topical application of squalene and UV exposure caused skin roughness and wrinkling in mice
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Production of toxins by squalene oxidationSqualene monohydroperoxide (SQOOH) is a primary oxidized lipid produced from squalene by solar UV. It is produced at the human skin surface due to natural exposure to sunlight during daily activities. Recent studies demonstrated that repeated application of SQOOH to the skin can induce skin roughness and wrinkles in the hairless mouse [. Uchino et al. [27] also reported that SQOOH induced skin damage in hairless mice. Furthermore, a few papers have also described the cytotoxicity of SQOOH, which is a primary oxidized form of epidermal lipids produced by solar UV rays. SQOOH is produced on human forehead skin, and it was suggested that skin squalene may be the principal target lipid for oxidative stress (e.g., sunlight exposure). Nakagawa et al. [28] demonstrated that SQOOH accumulation may be involved in inflammatory skin disorders such as skin cancer, cutaneous autoimmune disease, and skin aging.Chiba et al. [29] studied the effects of SQOOH, i.e., the initial product of UV-peroxidated squalene, on the skin of hairless mice. Repeated topical application of 10 mM SQOOH to hairless mice for 15 weeks induced definite skin wrinkling. Those results clearly suggested that wrinkling and changes in dermal collagen content induced by SQOOH qualitatively differ from those induced by UVB exposure (p < 0.001). This may provide a useful model for studying skin aging, particularly with regard to the collagen content.Paper Link

[Research] No causal association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and features of skin aging: evidence from a bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Data from in-vitro experiments suggest vitamin D reduces the rate of skin aging whereas population studies suggest the opposite, most likely due to confounding by UV-exposure.We investigated whether there are causal associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and features of skin aging in a bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study. In the Rotterdam Study (N=3,831; 58.2% women, median age 66.5 years) and Leiden Longevity Study (N=661; 50.5% women, median age 63.1 years), facial skin aging features (perceived age, wrinkling, pigmented spots) were assessed either manually or digitally. Associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and skin aging features were tested by multivariable linear regression.Mendelian Randomization analyses were performed using SNPs identified from previous genome-wide association studies. After meta-analysis of the two cohorts, we observed that higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was associated with a higher perceived age (p-value=3.6e-7), more skin wrinkling (p-value=2.6e-16), but not with more pigmented spots (p-value=0.30).In contrast, genetically determined 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration was not associated with any skin aging feature (p-values>0.05). Furthermore, a genetically determined higher degree of pigmented spots was not associated with higher 25-hydroxyvitamin D (p-values>0.05).Our study did not indicate that associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and features of skin aging are causal.Paper Link

[Anti-aging] 21 year old here with bad genetics. Should I invest in anti-aging products?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
21 year old woman here with garbage genetics. My father looked 40 years old in his twenties. My grandparents (his parents) both looked fairly older than they actually were.I've been mistaken for being at least five years older than I actually am many times. My first day of uni my classmates thought I was the PhD student standing in for the Physics professor. With the exception of the obsessive application of sunscreen and moisturizer, I'm fairly new to skincare. Should I invest in anti-aging products? Are they effective/worth it? Any products you'd recommend? My diet is spotless, I exercise six times a week and I get 8hrs of sleep every night. I do not smoke and I do not drink. Still I look significantly older. Will anti-aging products even make a difference if I'm doomed genetics-wise? Should I instead save up my money and invest in a medical procedure?

[misc] honey lightens skin so what if I pour it into a tub for the whole body???
Beauty Tips For Body Care
So after a week in California I got quite dark from the sun on the beach and yes I forgot the sunscreen so I never used it. Now I want to revert back to my normal skin color quickly because of an event in 2 days. So I used the honey trick on face and it worked great it lighten and moisturized my face quite a bit but now it looks uneven because my neck is burnt and so are legs and arms. So I thought of this crazy idea of filling a plastic tub to sit in and pour pure honey with a little water to dilute it a bit. That way I could evenly get honey on entire body. I know this sounds crazy but would this idea work could there be some negatives

[Misc] European skincare must haves?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello, I will be traveling to Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Bergen, and was wondering what are some good must have skincare products from these countries that are either hard to get in the USA or for cheaper. My skin is oily/combination with slight acne and milia prone. Where I live the temperature is a consistent 80 degrees all year around. I currently use CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, CeraVe in the tub, vitamin c serum, Stridex, Biore sunscreen, and witch hazel toner. Also, I occasionally use mint and clay masks.

[B&A] 1 Month After Discovering This Subreddit!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
http://imgur.com/gallery/qZqgnAfter doing some research and trial & error, I found the routine that finally gave me clear skin for the first time as an adult:Cleanse with Nizoral + Clarisonic 3x/week (at night)Cleanse with a Stridex pad 2x/day (not on Nizoral days--noticed excessive dryness)Differin 1x/daily (at night)CeraVe Moisturizing Cream 2x/daily (morning and night)About a month ago, I was feeling terribly frustrated with my skin. This was definitely not a new feeling for me, as I've been struggling with acne on my face for nearly ten years now. However, this time I decided to try typing my symptoms into Google Images instead of the standard search engine. I found an image of someone with skin that resembled mine, and the link redirected me to a blog entitled Simple Skincare Science. Now, this is not an advertisement (at least not a paid one lol) for this site, but I think others on this subreddit could benefit from its content. I know I certainly did. This blog mentions this subreddit a lot, and it's actually how I found out about this community in the first place. From reading further into the post I was redirected to, I discovered that I was likely suffering from Pityrosporum (Malassezia) Folliculitis instead of general Acne Vulgaris. This changed the fucking game. For years, I had been prescribed antibiotics and every combination of benzoyl peroxide I think exists. I had never heard of this skin disease from my dermatologist. Little did I know that the medications being prescribed to me were actually feeding the culprit behind my skin disorder--Malessezia. I began religiously reading this blog and users' routines on this subreddit to formulate my own.The routine listed above has given me the skin transformation you see in the image above. I am so grateful to everyone involved, especially the redditors here, for supplying me with the information I needed to get to this point. From one skincare addict to another, thank you! I'm sure you all know how important the appearance and health of our skin can be in our daily lives and interactions. I now feel more equipped than ever to accomplish my goals without feeling self-conscious about my appearance.

[Personal] My friends put bath and body works lotion on their face...
Beauty Tips For Body Care
And still have great skin. My friends are not huge skincare buffs like me, which is no problem. I have hormonal/stress acne on the side of my face, chin, really everywhere, and it's pretty bad, especially around my period/stressful times. My friends complain about a pimple or two, I reassure them they look amazing still, but I also give them advice on skincare."Oh, I usually just put bath and body works body lotion on my face.""I don't even wash my face."ugh. Like they complain, which is fine, but their face is not even that bad, hell, they put random lotions on and their face still looks good! Then I feel like they don't take my advice seriously, as who would take advice from the friend with acne?I HATE HORMONAL/STRESS ACNE. Dermatologists are too expensive. Hoping to go to my gyno and get birth control to even out my hormones.Sorry, just had to have a mini bitch session.

I'm starting back on tret, but because my skin is basically peeling off in sheets, shaving makes my skin totally irritated. Almost like razor burn? I almost feel like I'm shaving down to the deepest layer of skin sometimes, and it's just too much. Even with using the tret every other 3 or 4 days, im still struggling.. any tips or tricks? I love the clean shaven look and I need to be for my job :(

[Personal] Where do you get your self esteem from when you're not happy with your skin?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
My skin at the moment is awful, I've got breakouts on my cheeks and seem to go bright red about a million times a day. I've got to face customers all day at work and can feel my face burning. It takes all my strength to get through work and then I just get home and stare at my reflection wishing I knew the answers to how to make things better. Then I come on skincareaddiction and get overwhelmed by the masses of recommendations and different opinions. "I love this, it's my holy grail product for acne" "oh no this broke me out horribly I hated this", "don't forget to wait at least two months before evaluating results", "YMMV". So I just stand in front of the mirror, paralysed by fear, disgust and indecision. My flatmates all just went off to a party but I stayed home. I don't want anyone looking at me even though I know they wouldn't care. Too wrapped in their own problems. I know all this but it doesn't change a thing.Have a good night everyone I'm going to bed.

[B&A] One month into Accutane
Beauty Tips For Body Care
So for about 2 years. I'd wake up with these horrible white spots on my nose. They could get as bad as this. I tried everything from various skin products, various anti biotics - but nothing worked.I was hesitant to try Accutane, as I suffer with depression and I was at uni - I didn't want to risk messing up my studies. I've just graduated and thought "Enough's enough. I'm 22. I'm bored with acne".So took the plunge and went on Accutane. My normal GP couldn't prescribe it, and the waiting list on free healthcare to be seen was like 9 months! My mum gave me the number for a private GP and went to see him.It cost £150 for the blood tests and also the consultation fee, then another £130 to actually get the prescription. That really sucks. But it should be worth it. Taking 40mg dailyAnyway, this is me now only a month into the treatment. A few other breakouts here and there. Lip and scalp dryness are a pain - but it should all be worth it. Looking forward to seeing the end results.AMJust washing face with waterApplying CeRave PMSunscreenAccutane 20mgPMCeRave hydrating cleanserCerAve PMEvery 3 days using Nizoral shampooAccutane 20mgLoads of Carmex and Vaseline throughout the day.Going to do a 5/6 month course, then off backpacking! I'm weary that Accutane can make you photosensitive. So I'd like to stop Accutane at least a month before I go! Although my brother went an Accutane and was fine in the sun.

[Personal] So Tired Of Skincare Schemes!
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Awesome, so now TWO of my FB friends have started schlepping this R&F skincare crap. They keep posting about how it's scientifically proven, and how the cost is so worth it because of the proven results. Out of curiosity, I looked at pricing. Some of the bundles are $200 - $300. And the regimens are not personalized in any way. It's just, "if this is your skincare problem, then you buy this bundle." And they keep messaging me to see if I want to buy, or better yet, join their sales team! (Sure, I love ripping people off! /s)So, in retaliation, I've been posting about MY skincare. How my whole routine costs $50. How much my skin has improved from when I first started. How excited I was to make my own big tub of moisturizer with the same ingredients as my favorite $25 one (that comes in a teeny bottle). How I did some research and found a serum for $5 that did the same thing as a $20 tiny tube of my mattifying gel.My sister suggested I start a skincare blog. I'm considering it, but mostly out of spite lol.

[Product Question] Is Zinc soap making things worse or just purging?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I started Curology and my provider recommended Noble Formula 2% Pyrithione Zinc for my bacne (as seems to be pretty common by the reviews and comments). I've been using it in the shower each morning for about three weeks, letting it sit for a minute before rinsing. However, the breakouts on my shoulders and back seem to be worse.Does zinc soap have a purging period as some other products do? Or should I give up on this product?

[Routine Help] Saggy skin, stretch marks on breasts (tretinoin, glycolic, vit. C)
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi everyone,I'm trying to come up with a good routine for my breasts to target the loose skin as well as the wrinkly texture of stretch marks. I know that the stretch marks won't go away completely, and I'm ok with it. What I want to improve is the skin tone and texture in that area, add some firmness and make it more even. After trying many stretch mark and firming creams for years and seeing no results, I decided to do some research and now am determined to try the strong stuff. What everyone seems to agree on is that the only products that could potentially do something for my skin are tretinoin, glycolic acid and a good vitamic C serum, so I'm trying to find a way to incorporate them into my routine in a way that is both effective and safe. I know the skin in the breast area is quite sensitive and I don't want to make it even worse than it already is by over-exfoliation.These are the products I have in mind: Tretinoin cream 0.025 (or 0.05? I've never used tretinoin before) Glycolic acid peel 10% (and after a few weeks work my way up to 20%)Timeless vit. C serum CeraVe creamI'm thinking of using these at night time, first tretinoin, then wait 2 days and do a glycolic peel, wait another 2 and apply tretinoin again, etc. and using a good moisturiser such as CeraVe in between the tretinoin and the glycolic, just to make sure my skin doesn't get too dry.Is this a good routine? Any ideas of what I should change or introduce/how I could improve it? Also, I'm not very sure how to use the Vit.C. Should it go before I apply the tretinoin/glycolic or after?Any inputs would be greatly appreciated!!

[skin concerns] What can I do about weirdly visible hair follicles that are prone to becoming pimples?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
album hereMy hair follicles are very visible around my neck, chest, upper arms and back, and I was wondering what I could do about this. The skin there is also prone to closed comedones and sebum plugs. I'm 20f and my skin's been like this for as long as I can remember - I've tried exfoliating and moisturizing, but neither seem to have an impact. Currently, I wash my body with a loofah twice a week and I'm very gentle with my chest/back since scrubbing too hard will result in lots of pimples.I'm new to skincare but I'm considering trying BHA or glycolic acid - thoughts? I'm also wondering if laser hair removal or electrolysis might be helpful.

[Research] A Randomized Controlled Trial of Green Tea Beverages on the in vivo Radical Scavenging Activity in Human Skin
Beauty Tips For Body Care
BACKGROUNDOxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of various skin diseases. Thus, the antioxidant network of the skin relies on the uptake of exogenous antioxidants to ensure cell protection against radical formation. Green tea is one of the main sources of polyphenolic antioxidant compounds, but only few data are available on its cutaneous antioxidant effects.METHODSThe radical scavenging properties of Benifuuki and Yabukita green tea were investigated in the human skin. Thirty-two participants who met the inclusion criteria were randomized to consume 3 cups per day of either Benifuuki tea, Yabukita tea, or water (control group) for 2 weeks. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was applied to measure the radical scavenging capacity of the skin in vivo before and after the intervention.RESULTSBoth Yabukita and Benifuuki tea led to an increase in the radical scavenging activity of the skin by 28 and 29%, respectively, and the difference was significant when compared to the control group. Benifuuki tea, previously reported to be superior in bioavailability due to a highly absorbable methylated catechin, did not prove to be more effective than the common Yabukita tea.CONCLUSIONThe results show that green tea enhances the radical scavenging capacity of the skin and support the hypothesis that green tea may offer protection against cutaneous oxidative stress.PAPER LINK

[Review] Review of 5 high zinc oxide mineral sunscreens
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been on the hunt for a cosmetically elegant mineral sunscreen with a high zinc oxide content. Each of these sunscreens has more than 20% zinc oxide, but they perform very differently. For the record, I am a 30-year-old female with fairly light skin (not sure what I am in Mac's foundation, but I am "fairly medium" in bareMineral's original foundation). My skin type is dry and my main skin concerns are anti-aging and redness. Please note that all the prices are in Canadian dollars. I use 1/4 tsp of sunscreen just for my face. For white cast, I rated them 0-5, 0 meaning zero white cast.Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Dry-Touch SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 21.6% Zinc Oxide Cost: $14 for 59 ml White Cast: 5/5 Review: This is the first pure mineral sunscreen I ever tried as it was easily available to me at my local pharmacy. I actually own both the face and body version of this sunscreen and I'd say they are essentially the same formula. I don't know who Neutrogena is fooling here, this stuff is NOT sheer or "dry-touch" AT ALL. This sunscreen has the consistency of diaper cream. It's thick, hard to spread, and leaves a comical white cast. It is far from being cosmetically elegant and I don't think I'd ever try wearing makeup over it. I'd only wear this if you're staying at home or actually on a beach where the white cast isn't so embarrassing, but even then I find this stuff so hard to spread that reapplying is a bother. It also transfers on to anything I wore and stung my eyes a little if I got any too close to that area.bareMinerals Prep Step Mineral Shield SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 23.8% Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide 4.1% Cost: $39 for 40 ml White Cast: 0/5 Review: Next I tried this one because I could also get it locally at Sephora. The price is the biggest problem, it was almost $45 including tax for a tiny bottle. However, this sunscreen is very cosmetically elegant. It comes out of the bottle white, but it contains "color-adapting micro-encapsulated pigments" that are supposed to match your skin, which worked perfectly for me anyway. This sunscreen is extremely watery, I would actually apply it directly to my face because squirting it onto my fingers was wasting too much product. This does not sting my eyes, even if I rub it all over my lids. It is actually advertised as a primer, and it does indeed look great under makeup. At first, I actually loved this sunscreen and thought it might be HG despite the steep price. After a few days of use though I decided I didn't like it that much. It sinks into my fine lines and despite the dewy finish, it dried my skin out. It also never feels like it "sets" on my skin, it remains slippery all day, which made me concerned that it was moving too much and not giving me good protection. I think I'll save this for when I apply makeup (which isn't very often) instead of for daily use.Cotz Flawless Complexion SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 20% Zinc Oxide Cost: $25.75 (+ Shipping) for 74 ml White Cast: 0/5 Review: This sunscreen is not available to me in Canada except online. I purchased it from iHerb.com and it took a couple of weeks to get to me. I like this one a lot. It's very smooth, easy to apply and the tint disappears into my skin. It is very light and completely invisible. It does not sting my eyes, nor does it sink into fine lines. It is also very hydrating. It does leave a sheen on my skin, but that doesn't bother me at all. The only reason I decided to try another brand was that I need to buy this from the States and I'd rather something more locally available, but I'll definitely use this up.thinksport Safe Sunscreen SPF 50Active ingredient(s): 20% Zinc Oxide Cost: $35 for 177 ml White Cast: 1/5 Review: I think I've seen this locally, but I bought it from Well.ca, which is a website I use often and can get fast and free shipping as it is Canadian. This is my new go-to body sunscreen, but it is OK for face too. It is inexpensive, easy to apply and spread, and it's pleasant to wear. It does leave a slight white cast which I don't mind for my body but I'd only use it on my face at home or on the beach. It is advertised as a very safe sunscreen and I believe it is the only one on this list that is supposed to be waterproof up to 80 minutes. The only thing I don't like about it is the scent, it has a citrus scent that I personally find a little too strong, but at least it doesn't smell like coconut oil lol. It won't stop me from using it and repurchasing.thinksport Everyday Face SPF 30Active ingredient(s): 20% Zinc Oxide Cost: $20 for 59 ml White Cast: 0/5 Review: This one I haven't seen locally, but I can easily purchase it from Well.ca along with the thinksport body sunscreen. This is overall very similar to the Cotz sunscreen. It is hydrating, non-irritating, easy to apply, and completely invisible on my face. In the future, I will likely repurchase this one instead of the Cotz only because of the availability. It has the same citrus scent as the body version, but again that won't stop me from repurchasing.Hope this helped anyone out there!

[Misc] I made a list of recommended products for an acquaintance with KP on her face and slightly oily skin. I thought maybe this would help some absolute beginners with similar skin types or I could receive some CC on the routine.

[Routine Help] Do you think Silicons or Alcohols are causing my breakouts? Could it be both?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I thought for the longest time that silicons were the culprit of me breaking out. They weren't in my skincare but they were in my makeup. I couldn't possibly drop everything and go buy a new foundation(expensive and hard to find). I decided I would just have to live with my clogged pores, blackheads, and whiteheads for now. I used Cereve in the tub and woke up with HUGE clogged pores in my t-zone and whiteheads around that area. I stopped using that lotion immediately but I was still having moderate breakouts. Also, during that time, I was using makeup particularly heavy with dimethicone. I searched on here and figured out that it could be the alcohols. I was using a facewash and another lotion with it. I immediately went out and bought Aveeno calming facewash and Nivea creme. I LOVE this face wash by the way! It works very well! Since I started using those two items (and only those items)(it has been about 5 days), my skin has been noticeably softer and I haven't had too many new pimples. Here is the problem. I'm still having problems with the clogged pores. They are more visible at the end of the day. Also, I suspect that the Nivea creme is making me greasy during the day. I am searching for a lighter moisturizer right now. Do you think the clogged pores are from the dimethicone(my makup still has it) or am I not waiting long enough for my skin to fix itself after I started using skincare without alcohols? I heard that Dimethicone is okay as long is it's your last step on your face. It's technically not. I use a bb cream, then face powder, then blush, etc. What is your opinion on this? Thanks!

[Product Question] Drowning in skincare samples, but worried about the effects of trying too many new products.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
http://imgur.com/a/cqWt3Every year, my in-laws come visit from out of town, and my mother-in-law always brings me a few samples from overseas (ahem.... a few). She gets them herself from beauty purchases, and as gifts from her clients at her work. However, this year she brought me literally HUNDREDS of samples... I don't even know where to begin!I have already removed the makeup, hair, and body-care products, and the three piles you see in the link above are separated by masks/serums, day/night creams (and misc. samples that have no instructions and I have no idea what to do with, since skincare is pretty new to me), and eye/lip/neck treatments. Many of them are geared towards older women, and I'll probably give those away as I am in my mid 20's.I've divvied them up because I want to start trying the ones that seem age-appropriate, but I am a bit apprehensive to throw this many new things at my skin at once! I'm looking for a bit of advice from those that have a more established routine and more experience with skincare than I do... I am still learning about taking care of my skin, and am trying to find the right products that address my occasional pimples, while helping my dry texture and emerging/hereditary forehead lines.Any feedback is welcome... Are my concerns valid, or is it safe to try a few new products at a time?

[Miscellaneous]: To those with night skincare routines, when do you have sex-before or after your skincare routine? Also, do you sacrifice your skincare routine on certain days specifically for sex?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
To all those in long term relationships, newer relationships and random hookups who are serious about skincare. Do you schedule the days for sex to prevent wasting product on the days for sex? How far do you go?My SO can't stand my skincare items. He'd just prefer me to be plainfaced 24*7. But of course, I need my sunscreen in the AM and the retinols in the PM, leaving no time for sex.

[Skin Concerns] Breaking out AFTER increasing water intake and workout
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Three weeks ago I committed myself to start living a healthier life. I started to work out at the gym consistently, cut down my portions while eating, and I keep a 2 liter water bottle next to me at work to remind myself to drink more water. It's done a lot of great things for me. However, I noticed that I have gotten a lot more acne since making this lifestyle change. Prior to this I had very little acne and it was concentrated on my forehead, and now I have whiteheads all over my cheeks and jawline. I thought that working out and drinking more water would flush out the toxins in my skin and I haven't made any other lifestyle changes out of that. Does anyone have any insight into why this may be the case?

[Skin Concerns] I've realized the pink, fleshy but small growth on my forehead may be a cancerous growth and I can't calm down and I'm terrified.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Firstly, since age 17 I would wear a lot of BB creams from Korea with SPF 25... I wasn't as anal about sunscreen as I am now. I'm 22 and live in Canada. Now I wash my face with cetaphil twice daily, use the ordinary 10% lactic acid only at night followed by the algenist anti aging cream... I apply SPF 35 Aveeno 20 minutes before I leave my house and I'm a naturally pale home-body who has never tanned in my life. However, a year ago my ex pointed out a pimple on my forehead and said I must be stressed I didn't know what it was, but it's not a pimple. Ive has it for a year now, and I thought it might be some sort of skin tag or even a wart?? until I saw a SA reddit scare about skin cancer and noticed my tiny, pink fleshy bumpy Idk-what resembled melanoma like the pictures of skin cancer warnings... (It looks like I'm this picture https://imgur.com/gallery/opQD3)I've honestly been crying since. I've pointed it out to my doctor once before but she has never taken me seriously. The wait-lists to see a dermatologist in Canada can be up to a year. I could have a tumor in my forehead and I'll no longer be pretty for my husband and could be permanently disfigured or worse, I could actually die. I know I'm spiralling but after all my health issues to realize I now have another thing to be concerned about and that my doctors won't even take this seriously has had me crying all night now.

[Personal] After battling acne since I was 10, seeing countless derms and doctors, there are many things I wish they would have told me
Beauty Tips For Body Care
While I can say I'm finally reaching a point in my skincare journey where I have developed an understanding of my skin's needs (largely thanks to this sub!), I can't help but be frustrated at my sources of information growing up. There are countless products that had been prescribed to me growing up that did not help me or even made my skin worse, but I'm now learning that the problem has mostly been my way of using these products.I wish they had told me that some products take a long time to take effect, or that moisturizing was a crucial step in caring for my face (as someone with oily skin, this always seemed to be the enemy!). I can think of times where I walked around school looking like a scaly lizard because of Benza Clin, thinking that even this looked better because it obscured the acne. I wish I was told that some products make your skin worse before they start helping. I have quit so many treatments because of what could simply have amounted to purging. And because nothing seemed to work, I developed this idea that I had some kind of rare skin type that was impossible to treat, making me desperate to seek out "unconventional" or "secret" methods. What are things you wish your doctors or derms told you about skincare?

[routine help] Vaseline all day and night?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I destroyed my moisture barrier. I am trying to restore it by wetting face, putting on Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, and then a layer of vaseline. I am staying home to work on a paper for today and tomorrow, would it be wise to keep the mask + vaseline on all day and night? Or does my skin need a break from the vaseline for whatever reason? My skin is still dry and tight without the mask/vaseline on it. I want to have skin that isn't irritated for this coming week if possible (though I know it will take some time to restore.) I should NOT use my aczone and tret right? I usually use them everyday...

[skin concerns] PSA: dark circles can be a sign of allergies
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I saw an allergist today. He noticed my dark circles and told me that they are due to my allergies. Apparently it's something to do with the inflammation drawing more blood to the area, which then shows up as pigmentation under the skin. YMMV -- of course there are other things that can cause dark circles -- but it looks like allergies are the culprit in my case at least.Anyway. There are a number of allergic/immunologic conditions that can affect the skin (eczema, psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis, dark circles apparently), and I seriously recommend seeing an allergist if you have concerns about them. A dermatologist can treat the symptoms; an allergist can treat the cause.

[Acne] Thinking about using a kojic acid serum for hyperpigmentation but worried it will also erase my cute beauty marks?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have some hyperpigmentation and skin dullness/unevenness. I have a serum that contains kojic acid and want to use it, but I'm afraid that it will also erase my two cute dark beauty marks on my cheek, I've had them since I was born so will it erase them too or is it not that strong? Thanks! (The serum is Mela-D Pigment Control by La Roche-Posay)

[skin concerns] Just started using face lotion and it makes me sweat
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Is this a concern or something that I can address? I thought I had combo skin where it was normally dry and cracked feeling but also oily. I started using cerave because I thought it would be neutral and a basic place to start. I noticed I've been sweating form my face a lot more than normal. My skin isn't dry and cracked anymore but if its even slightly warm I start sweating from my forehead and cheeks which I never have before. It only happens when its warm or I exercise. I may be in over my head trying to have good skin here...Side note: Do I really need an oil cleanser? I had a girl tell me it was more for makeup removal and I don't need it but WTF do I know!

[Hair Removal] Horribly broken out upper lip
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I had my upper lip threaded when I most recently had my eyebrows done. I had never had an issue with my eyebrows, so I didn't even consider potential skin issues. Now my upper lip is covered in whiteheads. I've seen pictures way worse, but that doesn't make me feel better. I would like any and all advice on curing this. They are tiny bumps, but there are probably around 10-12 of them.

[Hair Removal] Went for my first Brazilian laser sesh and...
Beauty Tips For Body Care
...the therapist (who incidentally is the owner as well) didn't do a spot test beforehand. when i asked her about this she said the machine is really good, effectively saying, no need.Anyhow, I didn't really leave the first session feeling good with much confidence and wanted to get some insight into whether my session fits into convention and is what i should've expected. the session took about 20-30 mins. no spot test as i say. she did some highlighting with an orange highlighter. then started zapping. she started on my 'top' region, the less sensitive region and just kind of zapped a few areas, from my feeling. i thought it was standard for them to zap each and every strand of hair but i guess not?! can anyone confirm either way? certainly, it would take more than 20-30 mins to do each and every hair.then she moved onto the more sensitive, labia area in which i think she lowered the zap strength. then she spent some time on my arse crack area.i could smell the smell of burning hair which is fine. after she was done, i had a bunch of spot bleeds. she attributed to this to the fact that i didn't shave close enough. is that true? is spot bleeding from laser normal?after the whole thing, she tried to sell me aloe vera gel. i didn't really think i needed it and told her this but she still insisted even saying that we could not continue with further sessions unless i did buy it. i read the ingredients of the gel (which i do with everything) and there was hardly any "aloe vera" in it. anyway, i ended up buying it...but just concerned about whether she allocated proper time to the first session and did a proper job of it? and not sure about the spot bleeding in the aftermath?can anyone offer any insight? i've paid for two more sessions as part of the package and not sure if i want to continue after those two with the same therapist...it's day 2, i haven't noticed any hair falling out...only some scabs where she zapped me...she did say that if i didn't notice hair falling out easily, then the next session she would up the zap strength...i saw that she noted it was a 5-6 level strength on the paperwork that first time...

[product question] Paula's choice vs the ordinary
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Ok SCA, you guys have got me so interested in developing my routine, and I'm still figuring this all out. I feel like 6 mo ago it was all about Paula's choice, now I see the ordinary. Have you all switched your fav brand? I was just about to purchase PC 8% AHA but it looks like it has parabens(though it indicates not a large enough amount to be harmful). First thing I see when I go on TO website is no parabens-is there an alternative I should switch to? What's bad about parabens? Thanks!!

[PSA] There is something WRONG with some bottles of Garnier Micellar Water. Something is GROWING in two of mine, and I'm not the only one. (pictures inside)
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Just a warning to you all, something is going on with some bottles of Garnier Micellar Water. I would avoid purchasing any more of it until Garnier fixes this issue.I have used two bottles of this stuff without a problem, and I considered it my HG cleanser. Then, something weird as fuck started growing in my third bottle (which I got from Ulta), and it kept getting bigger and bigger. For a while I didn’t realize that’s what was setting my skin on fire and breaking me out in tiny little red and white bumps all over my cheeks in localized clusters, giving me random red patches, and making everything I put on my skin sting like hell. I would compare it to what a damaged moisture barrier is like. When your skin flips out at anything you put on it and everything hurts. It even hurt from gentle touch. I saw some weird floating white flakes in it occasionally, but they would disappear and the liquid would look normal. It was a little cloudy, but I didn’t notice that that was out of the ordinary and thought maybe it just hadn’t settled all the way. Well the flakes kept getting bigger until they became big white globs that would move between the two layers. And one day I saw them and that was when I finally decided that I was completely done with that bottle. Something wasn’t right. So I bought the second bottle from Walmart, thinking that might lessen the chances of me getting a “defective” bottle. Ha. Nope. I cleanse my face twice a day, and my skin went back to normal almost immediately after I switched to the new bottle. It took a couple of days for the increased sensitivity to go away completely, but there was noticeably no stinging when cleansing with the new bottle. All was well and good and my skin was happy, until now. It’s been a couple of weeks to a month, and my new bottle is growing whatever the hell that stuff is too. I noticed some stinging when removing my makeup Saturday night and thought maybe I might have rubbed my skin too hard. I try to be gentle but I sometimes I may apply too much pressure….But it has never stung like this when I’ve done that before. Yet somehow I ignored it and assumed that must have been it. Yesterday morning I noticed my face BURNED and stung after I was done with my routine, and continued to burn the same way throughout the rest of the day. But I chalked it up to using salicylic acid. Which I use all the time without a problem, and certainly never this kind of a reaction. Meh, must have been my rosacea acting up. But it wasn’t a typical flush. When I removed my makeup tonight it stung even more, and that’s the point at which I went “hmmmm” and looked at the bottle. Lo and behold, the same thing is happening, AGAIN..I looked at Garnier’s website and whaddaya know, other people have had the same problem too (and another one), and Garnier said it’s not normal. But I have no idea what they’re planning to do about it since those were from a month to two or three ago and the affected bottles are still on the shelves. Please, if you’re using this product, check it and if it isn’t CLEAR when settled, be careful.Sorry if this is rambly, it's really late but I wanted to write this now. This is crazy and I did NOT expect this from a company like Garnier. I'm going to try to get in touch with them about this tomorrow. If this has happened to anyone else or if anyone knows anything about what is going on I would appreciate some input. Thanks for reading.EDIT: And some people are saying their bottles smell like mold! Is this mold? Is it bacteria? WHAT THE HELL IS IT????

[Product Question] Suggestions for thinner moisturizers?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have dry flaky skin due to accutane, and nvidia creme doesn't do much because of my beard. I keep my beard at 1/4" but due to the thickness I'm unable to really get to the skin without using up scoops of moisturizer.I see a lot of people recommending CeraVe Moisturizing Facial Lotion, however I'm concerned it is thick like the creme.Any suggestions for a thinner moisturizer?

[Routine Help] My skin hates EVERYTHING. Someone PLEASE help.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm a 33yo white male. I live in Southern California. My skin SUCKS. I'm not joking when I tell you that every single cream, gel, SPF, whatever I put on my face makes it hurt. Here's the run down: I put a cream or gel of any kind on my face, and after a day or two, my skin on my face starts to "burn." It will start with my lips feeling very dry and burnt. Then the rest of the skin on my face. My face then starts to look super oily, even though it feels very dry and hurts. If I apply Carmex or chapstick, it only makes my lips feel moist for maybe 15 minutes. Even the INSIDE of my mouth begins to feel dry and raw and sometimes I get a weird "metallic" type taste inside. I begin to salivate more too.The above happens for ALL creams/gels I have tried. Fragrance free. Alcohol free. Glycerin based. Water based. Hyaluronic acid. Oil based. It just doesn't matter. Dr. Jarts serum and moisturizer layered Cerave creams. Dr. Eslee moisture gel The new neutrogena fragrance free hyaluronic gel-cream. Kiehls midnight recovery oil Kiehls hydroplumping serum and moisturizer. Creme la Mer Jojoba oil Rosehip seed oil Vitamin E oil Any Korean sheet mask Shiseido SPF 50 spray Neogen SPF ETC.Honestly, I just simply cannot apply any creams or moisturizers to my face without it turning into painful, fiery, dry-feeling, desert-like skin...with dry burning lips, and even dry mouth inside...but shining like an oil slick.Even the average Hydrating Cleanser hurts my face after I use it:(It hasn't always been like this. What on earth is happening to my skin? :(

[PSA] I finally got rid of my sebaceous filaments/rough nose-skin texture. Here's how:
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm so satisfied with my skin right now. I can't stop touching it because it feels SO soft and smooth. Before I tried the "grit" method, I stuggled with the texture on my nose, and was quite hard on myself because of that. To give you the idea, if you were to run your fingers along the sides of my nose, it would feel similar to sandpaper: rough, and bumpy. The top of my nose is riddled with prominent sebaceous filaments that protrude from my nose quite a lot. It is as dramatic as I make it out to be: my nose was the worst area of my face, significantly worse than other people. Here's how I got to get rid of my nose's texture COMPLETELY:1) I applied a BHA product with salycilic acid onto my nose. In my case, I used Stridex pads, maximum strength. IMPORTANT: I found my results much more dramatic by pressing it onto my nose as opposed to just wiping it on. I had attempted the grit method before, but the attempt in which I PRESSED the pad onto my nose, I actually felt the difference in my skins texture. It got rid of the rough texture. Press for a full 20 minutes.2) I applied a clay mask, without wiping off the Stridex. I used the Origin's Clear Improvement mask, and waited till it dried COMPLETELY. Then I washed it off with lukewarm water.3) I covered my nose with Kose's Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil. On a failed grit method attempt, I used baby oil, however, I felt that it actually clogged my pores instead of cleaned it. (Not sure why, since it is mineral oil.) I reccomend using any cleansing oil/balm that will not clog pores, and emulsifies. Leave it for 15 mins.4) Wash it off!I'm so happy this worked for me, and I hope it works for you too. Sorry for the capitalized words, but I really needed some emphasis on important steps.

[Skin Concerns] Gentle way to cleanse nose Sebaceous Filaments? My nose gets red easily, lots of broken capillaries.
Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am not sure how I got these capillaries but noticed them everywhere recently on my nose and below my eyes (I'm a 25 year old man). I am too terrified to try a clay mask again for fear that more will appear or my existing ones will worsen. But as it stands now, I always have white stuff coming out of these pores and have no idea how to cleanse them gently. I use Cerave foaming cleanser twice a day, a BHA, and moisturizer as my routine. Not sure what else I can do since every recommendation I find involves a mask.

[routine help] is there such a thing as too much hydration/moisture for oily skin?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
My skin has always been relatively oily, especially in my T-zone, and after a while of using BHAs twice a day with no improvement in oiliness I concluded my skin might actually be dehydrated so I've cut out using BHAs and upped my moisturizing. However after a few weeks my skin is still pretty oily, so I'm wondering if maybe I am just oily (not dehydrated) and maybe I should stop hydrating/moisturizing as if I were dehydrated. For reference I use either Origins Ginseng Moisturizer or Glossier Priming Moisturizer in the morning (both pretty lightweight, which seems to be better for putting on makeup after), and at night I use First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream and then The Ordinary Squalane. So, I guess I'm wondering if I should switch up my nighttime moisturizing products to something geared towards oily skin type, or if not what else I should try to help reduce my oiliness?

Potential regimen to treat PIH using The Ordinary products [Routine Help]
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello! I am looking to start the skin care routine below to treat my PIH. I have been using the PIH faq as a guide when I research products.A bit of a background I had acne from 13 years old until 17 years old. I’m 25 now. I still get regular breakouts, but considering how bad my acne was growing up, I have learned to live with my imperfect skin. I have oily skin that can feel dry without enough moisture. I minimize the use of skincare products that combat acne and oily skin. Outside of treating my PIH, I use nourishing, balancing, calming, renewing products on my skin.Over the past 5 weeks, I have introduced The Ordinary's Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2% and Advanced Retinoid 2% into my routine. I broke out a week in. As of week 5, my breakouts have started to die down — but I'm waiting until week 6 to see if I can officially rule it out as a purge. But besides the breakouts, my skin looks fantastic. I've also used the Ordinary's AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution twice so far, which my skin loves as well. Why am I changing my routine? Until I confirm that the breaking out I’ve experienced was a purge, then this set up so far has broken me out. Also, I don’t like putting too many “serums” on my face, so it would be ideal if I could diversify the type of products so as not to use 10 different types of serums, for example. The routine:AM (My morning routine has to be quick and straightforward):Origins balancing tonerKiehl’s ultra facial creamLa Roche Posay Anthelios sunscreenPM (This is where the bulk for my “treatments” happen):Bioderma micellar water to remove makeup/sunscreenOrigins frothy face washThe Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution to exfoliateThe Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% to treatThe Ordinary Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10% to also treatRosehip oilPM, once a week:Bioderma micellar water to remove makeup/sunscreenOrigins frothy face washAHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling SolutionRosehip oilTLDR: Is there an issue with combining The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% and The Ordinary Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10% in a PM skin care routine to treat PIH?Edits: formatting, TLDR

[acne] fungal acne or overexfoliation?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
Dear SCA-Community, I really need your help! For the last few month I used a lot of acids, but my skin didn't looked that much better and felt dehydrated. So I stopped using that much acids and hydrated more. Now I read about fungal acne and I don't know, if thats the main reason for my acne or if my skin is stressed due to the prior excessive exfoliation?I get a lot of bumps at the chin-area. Sometimes they are a little bit itchy, but not all the time and mostly once in the morning after my AM routine.Yesterday I used the Ordinary's 30% AHA and the Innisfree Bija Sheet Mask. After the sheet mask, I discovered that there was a new bump. I feel completely lost. The bumps are really firm and either there comes something small firm or some clear liquid out of them. (Sorry for the disgusting details!!).Here are some pictures:Picture 1Picture 2Picture 3.My Routine:AMCold WaterNiod MMHCThe Ordinary Niacinamide + ZinkCOSRX oil-free ultra moisturizing lotion with birchsap - OR - The Ordinary NMFMissha All Around Safe Block Essence Sun - OR - La Roche Posay Anthelios XLPMCleansing OilCOSRX Good Morning Cleanser - OR - Innisfree rebalancing Blueberry Cleanser1-2x/week COSRX Blackhead Power Liquid - OR - Mandelic Acid / AHAMissha FTENIOD MMHCCOSRX Honey Ceramide Cream.I do not know, what to do, since nothing seems to help. [Skin Concerns] Ladies, what were your skin experiences after going off the pill?
Beauty Tips For Body Care
After being on the pill for about 5 years, I decided to stop taking it. I didn't think my skin would be too terrible because I didn't have bad skin when I went on, but I broke out almost immediately after stopping. It started with one or two cystic pimples on my chin and quickly went to having 3 or 4 of them at any given moment. I lasted about two months and decided to go back on the pill because I couldn't deal. The breakouts have slowed down tremendously but now I'm left with a lot of PIH/PIE.So with that being said, I feel like I'm kind of stuck on birth control. I'm only 23 but I do want kids in the future, yet I literally don't wanna go off the pill ever again! Is there any hope that my face won't be a mess after stopping, or will I just have to accept acne when I stop the pill? What can be done?!Would love to hear any experiences from women who went off the pill and experienced acne!(Posted this on Asian Beauty too. Wasn't sure which would be better)

I'm in my mid 30s and have had problems with clogged pores/blackheads/congestion since my early teens. I have tried EVERYTHING, but stubborn clogs remain in my chin, nose, cheeks, between and above both eyebrows. The only thing that really works is manual extraction but they eventually come back (not immediately though) and I don't think it's great for my skin. I also have problems with clogs on my scalp, which end up looking like dandruff (dandruff shampoos haven't helped).Because I have tried EVERYTHING (every otc product, dermatologists, curology, gardenofwisdom.com, years spent in this sub, etc.) I believe that my issue isn't about what I'm doing to my skin on the outside, but what I'm doing on the inside. I think that I must be lacking something nutritionally which is causing a buildup in my pores. I was hoping to throw it out to the SCA community for ideas:Is there something (food or supplement) that would effect the shedding of skin cells? Or something that would effect the viscosity of the sebum I produce? My routine:Cetaphil cleanser (am & pm)Cerave moisturizer (am & pm)Stridex pads (pm)14% glycolic AHA (pm)Curology cream - Tretinoin .14%, Vitamin C 5%, Niacinamide 4% (pm)Oil Cleansing Method with hemp oil a few nights a weekI've tried so much to solve my skin issues externally, that I think the true issue must be an internal one. Thanks for any suggestions you have!edit: I'm thinking of trying a Vitamin E+Vitamin A +Selenium supplement after reading this:Antioxidant Effects of Vitamin EPrevent the oil secreted from the sebaceous gland from going rancid and turning hard; this prevents the clogging of the pores by hardened sebumDifferent studies have proven that vitamin E works best in acne treatment when used along with other antioxidants such as vitamin A and selenium.I don't have acne anymore, but it seems like it works best with Vitamin A and Selenium.

picturesSo these bumps started appearing on me about a week and a half ago and I've been putting Lotrimin on them since then, but they just keep appearing in new spots. First they were just under my boobs and now they started spreading down to my stomach area. :( I find a couple new ones every day. I've been super clean and washing them regularly, along with my clothes and bedding. I'm going to the doctor in a few days if it doesn't start looking better. Any ideas of what it might be?
