[skin concerns] Never tan my face, EVER?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi all,I'm half Arabic and half Icelandic. Prior to finding /SKA and wearing sun screen every day, my face had a beautiful, deep, brown golden glow. Now, I'm super light, except it doesn't look right; my skin is perfect and blemish free but I look washed out and pale. I use PC vitamin c, tretinoin every few days, PC aha at night and PC sunscreen.I'm 29 and never wore sun screen, ever, not even in Mexico, before this summer. I'm from Arctic Canada, and the angle of the sun to the horizon means there's a really high UV index and 24/7 sun in the summer, so I'm sure I've amassed lots of damage. My question is... Can I tan my face like, once every few weeks, just to get a bit of colour back, and still prevent sun-damaged causes ageing stuff? Or should I just use a self tanner? I don't want to look orange, but the pale thing just really doesn't suit me... My family keeps asking me if I'm sick. I don't wear/need foundation, either.Any help is appreciated, including self-tanner suggestions that don't have an orange base!

[Acne] Sebum reduction with diet - an experiment

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So approximately 2 weeks ago I decided I'll solve my acne with diet. I've had very good results with diet changes in the past (regarding acne), namely with the paleo diet and the vegan diet. I've been on and off these diets, and I would cheat pretty often, I have to admit. So anyways, 2 weeks ago I made a list of the only foods that I'm going to eat. Basically, a paleo-ish diet. Paleo-ish because paleotards will go apeshit over how rice isn't paleo, but whatever. So the list:mineral waterriceapplepearchickenbaconlettucecoconut oilteafrench friespop corn (lol)That's it. Now what happened was is that after only a few days my sebum production basically stalled. Normally my skin gets oily in 20 minutes after showering and when I wake up in the morning I'm literally drenched in my own sebum, but on this "diet" my skin would remain dry throughout the day. Even my acne dried off. Hell, I even asked a girl out, which I've never done before. Now, a week later I thought I'd introduce a few things back in my diet:beanscucumberseggs (I had them lying around and they were expensive bio eggs so I wouldn't want to throw them out lol)carrotspeppersoatmealwheattomatopumpkin seed oil(I think I didn't miss anything.) The results? 2 days later my skin is oily as ever, acne is back, I feel like shit. :(Could it be the protein from the eggs? The beans? Gluten from wheat? Though it couldn't be the gluten as I've been "full" paleo before and I was strictly gluten free for months and that didn't help either. Or is it just protein that breaks me out in general? Or could it be the low calorie intake?I looked into why milk breaks out most people, and found the IGF-1 connection. Basically, more dietary protein leads to more IGF-1 serum levels, which aggravates sebum production, which leads to acne. Of all the proteins though, casein was found to cause elevated IGF-1 levels (milk consists of roughly 80% casein). I have not found any information on what legumin (which are found in beans) does to IGF-1 levels, in fact I haven't really gotten much info on legumin in general, other than the Wikipedia article, which only states that legumin "is a protein substance analogous to the casein of milk." Could it mean that legumin (from legumes) also raises IGF-1 levels? And what about the eggs? They're rich in protein, so that could raise IGF-1. But then again, so could the chicken breast I ate every day, right? So anyways, thanks for reading this. I'm going back to my original list for the next week, and I'll report back.(I originally posted this in /r/acne, but apparently this post is "problematic" and the moderators have removed it.)

[Sun Care] My derm told me retinoids dont cause sensitivity

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Before you all start bashing my derm. Shes a young derm, 5 years in her practice and I totally trust her, she has saved my skin. She absolutely recommends sunscreen and wears it everyday, herself. She mentioned however, medical journals have shown that while initially retinoids can cause sun sensitivity, afterwards it actually creates thicker skin and actually doesnt matter after a few months use.Is there any evidence of this retinoid/photosensitivity debate?

[Acne] Acne coming back after two years, should I be concerned

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So when I was a sophomore in high school, I broke out a lot on my forehead (mainly the sides of my forehead) and chest. Over the summer going into junior year, my acne healed on my forehead (left a few scars on the sides of my forehead), but my chest acne stayed. Fast forward to the present, 2 years later, I am a senior in high school. And recently around midterms, I started breaking out on my forehead again, mainly on the sides of my forehead, which were the same spots as sophomore year. So i'm sitting here, using 10% benzoyl peroxide, and moisturizing after applying the benzoyl peroxide each day, and it seems to be getting better, but I can't tell. Should I be worried?Note: Over the summer when my sophomore acne was healing, I didn't apply any washes or do any extra stuff to accelerate the healing process, I just lived my life and the acne went away.Any response is appreciated, let me know if I can provide any more details. And if it matters, I am a male.Edit: Here is my routineMorning - Shower, then I moisturize my faceNight - Wash my face with 10% benzoyl peroxide, then moisturize my faceI do not style my hair or apply any other creams to my face, this is literally what I do every day.

[Skin Concerns] anybody know the best treatment for "chicken skin"?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
For as long as i can remember I've had these chicken bumps on the back of my upper arms and now im 19 and i think its spread to a little on my forearms, legs and on my upper back. Did some research on an i found out its keratosis pillaris (dunno the spelling) and its a kinda common problem. But when i was researching i found that AHA is supposedly good for helping clear up the chicken bumps but you need sunscreen (even tho I'm mixed and barely get sunburnt?). Anyway is there any other better solution or am i stuck having to use sunscreen if i want smooth skin?

[Skin Concerns] Can I ask my regular doctor for a Retin-A prescription?

I've had Closed Comedones for as long as I can remember. I had no idea this was something that was treatable until I saw before and after pictures on this sub. I've always been self conscious of my bumpy and rough texture and want to treat it.Anyway, my insurance doesn't cover specialists visits and I can't afford a $200 visit to dermatologist right now. Can I ask my regular doctor for Retin-A, if so what specifically do I ask for? I have been prescribed benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin phosphate (for spot treatment) by my regular doctor before and gotten refills from a different doctor, no questions asked so I'm guessing it's possible.

[Skin Concerns][Long]How to repair your moisture barrier?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey guys,I've been getting more into skincare for the last month or so but I recently realized that my moisture barrier may be damaged- it doesn't flake (probably because of exfoliating) but even after a shower without me rinsing my face with just water, my skin feels tight and sometimes really dry, but my skin is really oily right around my nose until you get right under my eye and it gets super dry and sensitive (even just washing my face too fast makes my skin burn) and when my skin is irritated it starts to peel up and burn when I put most things on it.Background:I used to really do nothing to my skin except use the oil free acne wash (the pink grapefruit foaming scrub) from neutrogena and the clean & clear dual action moisturizer. I only used these when I remembered to and during the day my skin was quite dry and it flaked like crazy. I'd go to brush hair out of my eyes, barely touch my forehead and I see flakes falling down from my forehead. I asked my mom to get me a different cleanser so I started using the neutrogena naturals purifying pore scrub.I'm not sure what the pH of the naturals is, but my skin started getting drier (but stopped flaking) and so I used more moisturizer. That irritated my skin so I added more moisturizer (it was the only thing I had + I didn't realize it was the moisturizer at first) until slowly my skin started peeling in tiny pieces starting at my temple, down my cheeks and chin then up to the other side of my face and my forehead. It made it hurt to talk and it looked like my face was scraped up.I went to the dermatologist and was recommended Cerave foaming (though I've now switched to hydrating) and was prescribed Desonate and Clindamycin Phosphate, as well as Cerave pm + cerave renewing sa lotion for KP on my arms.Anyways, I've added and removed products from my routine and done more research, but I'm pretty sure my moisture barrier is damaged. How would I go about doing this besides removing actives? And for how long? (Also what counts as an active?)Current routine: Am:Rinse with water, wipe with washcloth if I used an overnight mask Ponds dark spot dry skin cream + clindamycin Hyaluronic acid serum Rosehip oil Andalou Naturals 1000 roses beautiful day creamPm: Cerave hydrating + (shu uremura skin purifier if I wore mascara) Ponds dark spot dry skin cream + clindamycin Hyaluronic acid serum Rosehip oil Andalou Naturals 1000 roses beautiful day cream Sephora overnight maskI stopped using actives a few days ago (stridex in the AM and occasionally glycolic acid in the pm) do I need to change anything else/how long should I do this for?

[Product Question] Lactic acid okay for lactose intolerant?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am new to this subreddit and was referred here by the makeupaddicts subreddit. I am looking to improve my skin care routine and to brighten my skin. Over all I have good skin but recent and very stressful events (along with being a college student) is causing a few break outs and bumps (which I assume are stress related as I have never had acne before now). I started at your beginners routine thread and read over the beginnings of developing a routine. I am very interested in and have read some reccomendations for a lactic acid and Vitamin C product to help control blemishes and brighten skin. Now Lactic acid is derived from milk, so my question is since I'm lactose intolerant/allergic to milk, is this safe to put on my face? Is the only way to know to try it and see if I have a reaction? I would definitely be starting with something like The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% because my skin can be sensitive. But maybe all this time what it has been sensitive to is lactic acid that I hadn't thought about? I'm so confused!

[Routine Help] Ladies, what do you change about your skincare in the week before your period?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
For ages I have gone through a cycle of breaking out, it clearing up, having great skin, then breaking out again. It was so frustrating because I didn't understand how someone could have good AND bad skin.I used to think that hormonal acne = spots on your chin and jawline, but since I hardly ever get chin spots I figured that it wasn't related to my hormones. For some stupid reason, it has taken me AGES to work out that my pores clog the week before my period, and then the week OF my period all the clogged pores turn into spots. I've read about the 'Luteal stage' or whatever, which is where, the week before your period, you produce less estrogen and more progesterone, and so your skin clogs more easily. It makes total sense to me now, because clogged pores are exactly what I was getting, not full on zits.So I've reached a point where I realise I need to DO something extra during the week before my period, I need to exfoliate more. But how much? How much is too much?AM routine: cleanse with Sukin cream cleanser, tone with Sukin toner, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide serum, moisturiser with SPF 30PM routine: remove makeup with micellar water, cleanse with Sukin cream cleanser, alternate between Sukin toner (gentle) or Nip+Fab Glycolic Night Pads Extreme, Vitamin C serum, salicylic acid serum, moisturise. My thoughts so far are during the PMS week I could: physically exfoliate every other day, use my Dermalogica Medibac Salicylic acid face wash (for oily skin, I have dry skin apart from on my period), or use the Nip+Fab pads every day of that week.I just don't know whether I should do ALL of those things, or just one or the other, I'm not sure which is best.I'd appreciate any advice from anyone who has managed to 'conquer' PMS skin!!

[Acne] I'm so OVER THIS.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
This is my skin.My skin has been getting progressively worse since I was about 13. When I hit college, it got pretty bad. I had panic attacks, really dark depression, and I became reclusive and skipped class because of my skin. Finally my parents were nice enough to take me to people who treated acne. I was on BPO, mandelic acid, strict diet, and a combination of their moisturizer, facial cleanser and sunscreen. It was a long, painful, extremely expensive process, but it worked and my skin was perfect for the first time in forever. Then, things happened, my education became more expensive, and the regimen was a difficult expense. I was also getting extremely irritated by the rigidity of my diet and routine, and I was unhappy. It gave me clear skin but didn't "work" for me if that makes sense. I went cold turkey last fall.Meanwhile, I was stuck with a list of ingredients I could not put on my face. This left me with limited makeup options, one face-wash option, one sunscreen option, and still no moisturizers. Again, my problem is everything is so expensive and I don't want to rely on expensive products. Now, my skin is worse than ever, I'm guessing because the BPO could have destroyed whatever good bacteria was on my face.I'm creeping back into nightly panic attacks, class skipping, and suicidal thoughts. My first reaction is "put me on fucking accutane, anything but this", but I'm concerned about antibiotics because 1. I was a C-section baby, leaving me with already weak biota and 2. I am in the medical field, and will be exposed to pathogens on a regular basis, and I don't want to weaken my defenses. I also have a history of mental illness and it can be exacerbated. In a perfect world, I would just be cured of acne. I can go backpack for months on end without having to carry products with me. I can have pizza with my friends and not flip out when I wake up with a pizza face. I can wear inexpensive moisturizers. I can actually have fun with makeup and not check ingredients. I don't know if that's a possibility for me.This is extra hard because I see patients. I can't have patients seeing me with horrid skin, because they'll likely assume I don't take care of myself. I don't know how to establish rapport with anyone looking like this.My routine now, my sad, sad routine:AM: Witch hazel, sunscreenPM: Wash with neutrogena foaming cleanser, witch hazel, one side curology and one side tretinoin (testing if either is better than the other), vaseline because my old derm's moisturizer is stupid expensive and everything else breaks me out. I need something.Skin is on the dry side. What I've tried: BPO (turned my fair skin red), curology for like 2 months now, tretinoin .25, asian sunscreens (breakouts), cerave pm (breakouts), teatree oil (no difference), birthcontrol (hahaha), getting regular facials, OCM, doing the whole no makeup no anything no washing just letting your skin be (first of all, still bad skin, second of all, not covering it up gave me panic attacks in class).I change my pillowcases, don't touch my face, use silk pillows, yadayadayada. My skin remains.I don't know anymore. I'm a long time lurker but I don't even know where to begin.Things I'm wondering about: PCOS, thyroid disorder, my hormones are just fucked up maybe. I'm trying to get blood tests to see what my levels are.Ok.Sorry that was a lot.

[acne] Beauty salon messed up and gave me micro instead of light enzyme peel while i have active acne. now im freaking out

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So, basically what happened was i went to a beauty salon and the beautician messed up and gave me a micro instead of a enzyme peel. bc i hadn't had either before i thought micro meant light peel so i didn't say anything. throughout the whole session it wasn't painful, she wasn't rough either. after that i had an LED skin treatment which didn't hurt at all, it was fine. when it was over the girls at the front seemed pretty shocked over the mix up and there was a lot of sincere apologies passed. on the way home bc my car has no A/C and it's like 40 degrees in australia i was sweating so when i got home i washed my face which washed the moisturisers off my skin and such that they applied during the session. i applied tea tree water on my skin for like 30 minutes which burnt for a minute or so before i then hoped in the shower and used my cleanser which is a cetaphil product, used non-alcoholic soap soaps and crap bc my skin is sensitive. when i got out i put a mixture of bio oil and a 'simple' hydrating light moisturiser on my face and now im typing this. its been an hour since i did that. any advice or anything is greatly appreciated bc im panicking a little rn.i have an appointment in two weeks for another LED treatment and a enzyme peel.

[personal] To all the girls out there with painful acne...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have always had clear skin, pimple here or there but only on my chin... I mean ALWAYS on my chin. Never ever ever anywhere else in my life. Easy to cover up. Simple. In the past 2 months I have had pimples pop up in random places (to me), cheeks, in between nostrils, right on the inner of my brow, next to my temple. Deep "blind" pimples that are extremely painful. And all of this is stress and I know it is temporary. And I simply had to tell all of you girls out there that have been struggling with painful deep cystic acne that I applaud you. I cannot imagine what physical pain you feel if I feel a lot from just a couple "blind pimples" at a time. I hope you all of you find comfort one day. And I and many others think you're absolutely beautiful.

I'm looking for a new moisturizer that has nearly perfect cosdna ratings. I know cerave moisturizers are generally suggested, but for some reason my skin doesn't like to cooperate with them. I have sensitive normal/dry skin, and I've found many products make me break out or give me CC's. Thanks!

[Skin Concerns] Since taking care of my face, it is almost 3 shades lighter then the back of my neck and body. Help!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So, I've been taking extra good care of my skin. Because of this my face is definitely 2 shades lighter. That is not the case for the rest of my body and back of my neck. I am black (African American) and in the winter I am naturally cappuccino colored. My face right now is more of a latte :-/. My mom joked and was like "there is a line going down the side of your neck differentiating the two colors. You should exfoliate you neck front and back along with your face". I definitely noticed it. I don't think the neck thing is too noticeable unless you look, but then I can't see my neck unless I look in the mirror. My foundation is the color of the rest of my body, not my face. It blends very well. I use RCMA Shinto III. I guess most people would think 'well, what's the problem?' The problem is that even though it is the same color as the lower part of my neck and body, it looks slightly off to me because my face is now lighter. My mom also mentioned that my skin foundation looks off on my face and wanted to know what I did differently this time. Also, sometimes I don't want to wear foundation at all. When I shower, I don't really exfoliate my body. I always use a wash cloth to bathe with. I am at a lost of what to do. Should I start exfoliating my entire body and back of neck to get my face and body closer in color? That seems like too much work though. Unless... I use a loofah in the shower? Is physical exfoliates bad for body too? Here is my routine:AM :splash face with wateruse Oxy BHA pads 2x a week in the am (3 at night)moisturize with CeraVe in a tubSpot treat PIH with Ambi creamSPF 50 CeraVe ( I hate it I will be returning it)sometimes makeupPM :double cleanse with olive oil, then Keihl's Calendula foaming face wash for normal to oily skinBHA 3x a weekAlpha Skincare AHA 12% 3-4 times a weekQueen Helene's Cocoa Butter Intense Moisture Lotion (layer 1) (I love it)CeraVe in a tub ( layer 2)Vaseline (Layer 3)Spot treatment with AmbiI HAD oily skin UNTIL I started moisturizing, now it's normal. When I finish washing my face, it's not shiny and squeaky. It's soft and elastic to touch. Also I have had no peeling whatsoever from the exfoliates. I don't suffer from much acne. I had about 5 small pimples from purging and they are going away. My issue is PIH from a long time ago.Any advice to even out skin color for my whole body is much appreciated!

I know most posts are about skin on your face but my hands are my real concern. I have been getting lots of comments on how bad my hands are and I don't quite know what to do with them. They don't hurt but are peeling the way you would peel dried glue off your skin. Exhibit A and B.I frequently use hand foam sanitizer and soap for healthcare workers and am washing or foaming my hands very, very frequently. I use Cetaphil lotion at work and Working Hands at home. How do I stop the peeling and recover from this bout of peeling awfulness? Any recommendations. Physical exfoliation will probably make it worse like it does on your face, no? Also, no matter how much my hands have been washed there is a brownish discoloration to the dry bits on the top of my hands that just looks dirty. What is that and can I get rid of it?

Feeling super discouraged. I'm nearing 4 months on Retin A cream, .025, with Clindamycin/BP at 1/5 ratio applied in the morning.I had mild acne that flared with hormones, but nothing too terrible. I didn't have perfect skin, I had some blackheads and CC, but not huge pimples like I have now. I wanted my acne/CC gone, but I was also wanting to add tretinoin for age prevention. In the months since I've been using Retin A, my skin has become the worst it's ever been and its completely destroyed my confidence. I'm 29 and the acne I'm experiencing is worse than any I've ever had. Album for reference These pictures are about a week old, and my skin is actually worse since I took them. I never thought I would wish I had my old acne back.Should I quit Retin-A? What should I do? I previously never even wore makeup, so I'm not equipped to cover this up. [Personal] Chronic chapped lips driving me mad, need help.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So my lips are always (and always have been) chapped, no matter the season or how dry or humid the air is. I've tried every balm known to man: Burt's Bees, Nivea, Weleda, plain Vaseline, Baby Lips... Nothing helps except for Bepanthen, which does really help as long as it's on, but as soon as it's absorbed it's back to having chapped lips. It's like a never ending battle. I know it seems like a minor thing but it's no fun and I'm pretty sick of it. I don't really have other skin problems.Another thing I should mention is that I don't drink a lot of water despite all my efforts. I read that keeping hydrated can help, but I find it hard to believe that if I just drink some water the problem will magically resolve. Can that really be the problem? Am I going to be stuck with dry lips forever?Any help or other methods to treat this would be much appreciated! Thank you!Edit: I should also mention that my situation is not incredibly-flaky-looks like the desert chapped. From the outside it looks ok most of the time, because I keep applying some sort of balm and peeling my lips. I know I shouldn't do that, but it's driving me crazy!

[B&A] How I healed my back (products and routine. long)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Before and after picturesI've battled acne on my chest and back for most of my adult life (29/m). I wouldn't rate it as severe but it has been enough to objectively not look healthy. I've seen a dermatologist once or twice but the most they've ever done for me is offer me antibiotics, which never did anything. Experimenting with skin care routines and products was always frustrating to me because it's expensive, it takes time to see results, and it's hard to be sure what the results are from. I thought I'd post about what helped me clear up my back, with the goal of giving folks in the same boat a few ideas. Those pictures were taken about 7 weeks apart.I am not a doctor and this advice is not meant to substitute the opinion of a professional. I apologize if I somehow botched reddit etiquette with this post in any way.1. Glycolic Alpha Hydroxy Acid Lotion - I can't say that my back would have healed with just this lotion alone but I do think it has been the most important part. It's a chemical exfoliant. I applied this lotion about every other day, and now just once a week or so. I tried my girlfriend's 17% AHA lotion and it felt like my skin was burning off so I bought some 12% and it was MUCH more comfortable to me and still effective. I bought also a lotion applicator. I used to think I got pretty good coverage of lotion on my back using my hands but this has definitely been a worthwhile investment. On days I don't use this AHA lotion, I use a generic moisturizer made by Vaseline.2. Shower routine and products - I started using this back scrubber with this body wash. The back scrubber is probably #2 on my list in terms of perceived effectiveness, behind the AHA lotion. When I bought that brush and used it for the first time I had buyer's remorse because I thought it was far too rough. The bristles are very stiff and coarse. After a few uses I began to enjoy it and now love it. I really feel that it sloughs the dead skin cells off my back as well as possibly the heads of any whiteheads/blackheads/clogged pores, and evens the texture so I'm not inclined to try and scratch or pick acute spots myself. Game changer for sure. Combined with the body wash (I trust Paula's Choice products; I used their "Resist" BHA lotion with good results) and a few routine adjustments and I think this was an important piece. Those routine adjustments included: switching to sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner (I ordered products by Verb, but I'm sure there are a lot out there) and changed from washing my body first to washing my hair first and then my body. I read a post about that once on this sub and some people couldn't believe that people washed their body before washing their hair. They proclaimed that the residue left over from washing your hair could cause problems. I never thought about it and who knows if it changed anything, but it makes sense. I also started using fresh towels after three washes, when previously I only changed after 5 or 6 washes. i think this makes a difference.3. Sleeping routine - I started sleeping in freshly washed t-shirts. I used to sleep with no shirt, and I think the oils and dirt from my skin would agitate my back despite washing my sheets every week. That's really about it. I use laundry detergent that is marketed towards sensitive skin and I think that helps as well.Bonus tip: Shaving - I used an electric razor most of my life and always dealt with irritation, high frequency of blemishes/pimples, and ingrown hairs. I have recently started shaving using a safety razor (also known as a double-edge or DE razor) with decent shaving soap and my skin is much happier. You will have to learn how to shave again somewhat but it absolutely seems worth is so far. Always wash your face before you shave. I use an alum block after shaving to close my pores before applying my post-shave balm. Shoutout to r/wicked_edge, go there for more info.As you can see my back isn't quite totally healed but it is certainly much more healthy than it was. I also believe that environmental issues contributed to my most recent flare up (pictured), as I had just moved and started a new job and was somewhat stressed.I hope this helps and good luck!edited for formatting

[Miscellaneous] Ulta Rewards Spendy Time! I'd love suggestions!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am super new here so.... Howdy!I just hit 2000 Ultamate Reward Points and my $125 is burning a whole in my pocket!I don't really need makeup at all. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOVE makeup but, I'm all filled up. I'd really like to try out and stockup on some good skincare products.Me: •42 •Latina •Caramel Tan skin •Combination skin but, really, it's mostly normal •I'm aging VERY well so, I love to moisturize and keep it smooth •I have no dark or light spots •The texture of my skin is smooth •Skin not overly sensitive but, fragrances do irritate my face •I love my clarisonic •most days I wear makeupHow care for my face: •I wash with a gentle cleanser I love •moisturize with Maracuja and argan oils •use a night cream •use a night eye cream •every 3 days I ThirstyMud (glamglow) •every 10 I YouthMud (glamglow) •I spot treat with ClearMud (glamglow) as needed (and that's very rarely) •I use Micellar water for my eye makeup & No7 wipes for the rest of my face •I tone with Witch Hazel after I washI am really looking for a light and gently day face cream/lotion with no SPF. I'd love a better toner as the witch hazel can dry me out, and what other face oils can I try? I wouldn't mind trying a different mask. Are there any cool single serve masks I can get from Ulta? How about a hydrating facial spray? Any other suggestions are welcome. I'm super excited. I really love trying new stuff. My skincare routine is pretty solid. Trying new stuff here and there usually goes well for me.Thanks!

[Personal] Haven't used soap in over 15 years. Need advice on how to possibly return to it.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Unless I forget to put on deodorant that day, I have experienced no BO or anything weird or cheesy on my body. I still use shampoo and conditioner because my hair would be an insane mess without it. I also use the occasional facial cleanser for my acne, but that's about it. I don't really get sick more than once or twice a year, and I do go to the doctor for physicals regularly. My skin's actually decently smooth. I don't have acne on any other part of my body except for my face (which has an oiliness problem that I'm working on).My shower routine is basically scrubbing with hot water, applying my facial cleanser every other day, and rinsing. I do clean my ears and whatnot.I don't really know why I have an aversion to soaps. I just know that for years, I have been sickened to the point of near nausea at the casual mention, sight, or smell of it. I do wash my hands, but I will use hot water and then extra hand sanitizer that I keep with me. I don't even want to really be near people who have very recently used soap.Strong-smelling soap makes my head spin and if the smell is transferred to my skin by hand-to-hand contact, I'll scrub my hands with hot water until it's gone. Or I'll use alcohol to replace the soap smell with something more chemical. I've tried plenty of nonscented soaps, but even the sight of it turns me off from using it.Dunno if that covers everything, but yes, I'm a freak and I know it. Looking for anyone who might know of a way to possibly break this habit of mine and whether or not it's detrimental to my skin long-term. Forcing myself to do this because I know if anyone finds out, I'm pretty much going to end up with no friends, so I might as well try and deal with it.

[Anti-Aging] Will a few minutes of a UVB (not UVA) lamp a day cause serious aging? Can I still use AHAs in my regimen and other such products if I use it?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have very low vitamin D levels, feel pretty down/shitty quite often, and so would like to get them up. Supplements never really agree with me and I've read the actual UVB rays cause the release of other chemicals that cheer you up. Is like 5 minutes a day going to do a number on my skin? I'm extremely fair. I thought UVA only caused wrinkles but different sites say different things.

[Skin Concerns] Help! I messed up my blackhead extraction and my nose has red and black spots!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Like the title says, I messed up my blackhead extraction a few days ago. I've had a few enlarged pores with black in the center of my nose for half a year, and tried many pore cleansing methods but none of them worked. So I finally decided to use an extractor on them, especially because one was a bump, like there was buildup in it. But I couldn't get anything out...and I made the mistake of persisting and pressing the extractor down harder to try to force stuff out. Now, there are still black spots, and even after a few days, they're still really red. I know I damaged the skin and capillaries. What can I do now? I feel so self conscious going about my day looking like I got stabbed in the nose by a needle several times.

[Review] Deciem The Ordinary: Vitamin C, Niacinamide + Zinc, Caffeine Solution and Buffet

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've been trying out some of The Ordinary's products for the past few weeks. Shipping from Deciem to Rural New Zealand took about 8 days from when I placed my order, but I never received shipping confirmation or a tracking number. For reference, my skin type is Dry, Acne prone, and sometimes Dehydrated. I'm 20 years old, female, and my biggest skin concerns are my redness and uneven skin tone, as well as PIH. I have been using the products in conjunction with Cerave Hydrating Cleanser, Paulas choice liquid AHA (8%), Paulas choice liquid BHA (25), Cerave Moisturizing Cream, and It's Skin 2pm Sunscreen.Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%: As many people have mentioned before on this sub, the texture of this is weirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd. It is gritty, and I find I need to pat it in gently otherwise it balls up on my face. I don't like applying anything over this, so I apply it after the rest of my skincare, every second night. For some reason I can't apply it on the red areas around my nose, as it stings and itches, but otherwise I don't have any irritation from this product. My skin has become brighter from using this, and my PIH is fading much faster now. I think if I had the money I would opt for a more pricey Vit C, because the texture isn't very nice to apply, but this is really all I can afford for now, and it is worth it because of the results!Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%: This is a watery gel-like consistency that spreads evenly but remains a little sticky after applying, but once I apply moisturizer over top I don't notice. I have only used this product for about two weeks, on the nights I don't use the Vit C serum, and the most visible difference is the reduction in my PIH. I had a massive purge a couple of months ago after incorporating a BHA into my routine, and I am the worst at picking pimples so I was left with bad PIH, but this is seriously helping a lot! I highly recommend.Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG: This is a gel like formula, which absorbs quickly under the eyes. I find it slightly cooling and refreshing, so I like applying it. I haven't however noticed any difference in the month that I've been using it. I don't think my dark circles/hollows can be helped with skincare as they are hereditary and have been there my whole life. However, if this could reduce fine lines under my eyes, I would be extremely impressed. I think I'll wait until I've used up the bottle (that will be a long time away as I use such a small amount) to decide if I will be repurchasing this one."Buffet": This is a multi-peptide serum to target multiple signs of aging. This is another watery gel-like formula, which spreads easily and absorbs quickly. It leaves my skin feeling feeling slightly dry after applying, but I go in with my moisturizer afterwards, so it's no issue. Honestly, I'm not sure why I bought this. I think I just read about the peptides and thought "Hey that sounds cool". I really have no issues with aging yet, although I'd like to prevent aging as much as I can. I can't tell you if this is making a difference yet. I did read on Paula's Choice that peptides are degraded from air and light exposure, and this serum is kept in a clear glass dropper bottle.. This may be something to think about if you are wanting to purchase this product. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

[Personal] Saw a classmate with a bleeding zit and my heart hurt for her, how can I support her battle with acne?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
There's a girl (K) who is somewhat of an acquaintance in one of my classes at uni, we're in early 20s. I see her once maybe twice a week. I've noticed that every time I see her, her acne is getting much worse and covering her whole face. I notice this because just a few years ago I suffered severe acne due to PCOS all over my face, so I deeply empathize. I still get breakouts but they don't faze me considering I know how bad it can really be, so I'm grateful to only get smaller breakouts.I'm writing today because last night a bunch of us were standing around waiting for the bus and chatting and one of her zits started bleeding profusely. One of the other girls we were with gently pointed it out to her and kindly suggested it was a cracked lip (less embarrassing than a bleeding zit). I could tell K was really embarrassed and I wanted to cry for her because I 100% know how she probably wanted to run and hide. She was antisocial for the rest of our time together and kept checking her skin in the mirror.I really wanted to say something, anything, to be like "I'm sorry you're dealing with this and I understand your pain, you can talk to me about it" but I didn't want to embarrass her further. When my skin was horrible I know I would've been really embarrassed and ashamed if someone brought it up to me. I really want to lend support but I just don't know how, I haven't stopped thinking about her. I know when my skin was horrible (cystic acne ALL OVER MY FACE) it was a really dark lonely time for me. My heart hurts for her. It's a mental health awareness day in Canada so this topic is relevant: how can we support each other though dealing with bad skin, and its effect on a person's psychological well being?

[Acne] ScA beginner routine greatly reduced the frequency of my pimples, but now closed comedones have surfaced

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey everyone, I am a newbie when it comes to taking care of my skin. I have normal/slightly oily sensative skin. I have always had mild acne; mostly in the form of whiteheads and pimples. 2 months ago I started using Cerave foaming face wash and Neutrogena oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin. I no longer get any pimples but I have gotten a lot of closed comedones that don't seem to go away. I have been using Paula's Choice 2% BHA for the past 2 weeks after reading some posts on here but have not noticed any reduction. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

[Review] The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% & Vitamin C 23% Suspension

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So, I had to post this after only two nights of using The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2%.A little background: I have struggled with acne since I was 11. The first decade + involved little care or interest on my part and mostly involved St Ives Apricot Scrub and TN Dickinson's Witch Hazel toner (14% alcohol!). I was 26 when I discovered Paula's Choice. I've had almost entirely clear skin since I started using her Clear Regular Strength BHA & BP products. But like quite a few skincare nerds, I started to fall out of love with Paula. Mostly because of the higher and higher prices of her anti-ageing products (which I am interested in now I'm 30). Here in Australia, her 1% retinol serum is almost $80 AUD. FFS. I will probably always use her BHAs, BP and SPF (Resist Super Light SPF user for life) but dammit if her anti-ageing stuff was just getting too effing expensive. So I jumped on The Ordinary. I got some warts burned off my face three weeks ago, meaning I could not stick to my BHA routine of switching up the 2% & 4% PC BHA's I normally used, and I also cut back on my BP use while my face healed. I also went back on oral birth control, and my skin kinda lost it's shit. Acne on my cheeks, red and yucky in a way I had not seen in years. Now you have a backstory of what my skin was like when I tried it, here's my little review:The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2%: Lovely liquid gel, light yellow, easy to use with a dropper. No smell or texture problems, heaven for people like me with oily skin who are wary of using heavy serums. I applied this to my angry, pimple-strewn face (I literally had a southern cross formation of pimples on my right cheek), dotting some along my orbital bone under my eyes too. There was no stinging or redness. I woke up the next morning to the best overnight healing I can remember since I started using BHA, BP & AHA. My pimples were almost gone, and my eyes were fine - no signs of redness or irritation on my under eye area. I repeated my routine last night and most of the traces of my most horrible breakout in recent history is all but gone this morning. It's hard to impress me with new products as I am kind of a very bitter sceptic, especially when it comes to acne and anti-ageing products. But for $18 AUD, this serum has been one of my better buys this year. It's worth noting that Paula's Choice Clinical 1% retinol serum did not have the same effect on my skin in terms of acne. Time will tell if this product is good for anti-ageing, but I was so amazed with what it did for my acne I just had to post this.Vitamin C 23% Suspension: I was prepared for the gritty texture, I was mainly worried that the serum base was too heavy for my oily skin. After using it for a week, I can happily report that it is not clogging my pores and my skin is brighter - but most importantly, it's helping fade the marks left over from the warts I had burned off my face. For $9 AUD, I will keep buying this one for sure. I used to use Paula's Choice C15 Super Booster, which I loved (water based serums are my friend) but it was quite expensive at around $60 AUD and I struggled to use it all up before it expired (it has a shelf life of just 3 months).I ordered from Victoria Health, which took around 2ish weeks (standard shipping from the UK to Australia) and Deciem, which took just 24 hours as they have a base of operations in Australia.

[Miscellaneous] Skincare is about doing your best, having fun, and loving yourself

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey everybody, I've seen several posts from people overwhelmed, anxious and depressed - sometimes over big issues, sometimes over little ones (that can appear big all the time). Our issues suck, it's true, but I don't want us to lose sight of our successes, our beauty, and the fun we can have with taking care of our skin.So I thought I'd share some lovely stories with you.One of the most confident ladies I know has acne scars down the sides of her cheeks. I never even noticed they were there. Her eyes are always so bright, and she has this beautiful smile, it took me a good few months to really have it hit me that she had acne scars. The thing that made me realize it was when she mentioned it to me. I may have noticed the spots, but it never was in my mind "oh my god, what are those'. They were just a part of the whole package of someone I regard to be very beautiful. My brother was born with some pretty deep set wrinkles in his forehead and brow. Just imagine an expressive kid with some cute wrinkles. I was stressing about getting wrinkles when I was like 18, and I remember bringing it up to him and asking him how he felt about it - seeing as he had wrinkles and was open about it.He said something that really changed my perspective. He said he didn't really fear wrinkles because they were like a map to the type of life you've lived. All your happiness and sadness, all that life, captured on your face as you get older.I realized right then I wanted laugh wrinkles on my face. It was silly, but I couldn't imagine a more beautiful thing then seeing all the times I've laughed accumulated on my face.Tldr: I wanted to share these stories with you guys because I think we should cherish our flaws, and that each of us are beautiful in our own ways. I think it's beautiful and fun and important to take care of our skin. But let's take a step away from the mirror, complement ourselves and our successes (no matter how small), and remind ourselves that life can't be taken so seriously. :)If you want, share something you're proud of about yourself!!Hope you all have a good day. :)

[personal] how do I learn to give myself credit for healing and progress, instead of feeling defeated because my skin isn't perfect?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
One of the things I've come to notice in beginning a skin care regimen is that I have no real frame of reference for what to actually expect, or what "good skin" or even decent skin REALLY looks like.I am always shocked when I look at photos from even a few weeks ago, finding it hard to believe that my skin ever looked that much worse than it does now, yet still there is SUCH a disconnect in there as far as feeling good about the improvements. the first month of committed skincare was a stark difference, which boosted my confidence a lot and made me feel hopeful, but due to a lack of existing self esteem i stopped being able to feel good like that.I just this morning looked at myself in the mirror and took note of the remaining pigmented spots that have yet to fade in the few months i've been working at it, and the rough patches where it's not flawlessly smooth. that's ALL i could take away - any progress is ignored, and i just notice the bad about both older comparison pics AND today's skin condition.on the off chance that i do feel a glimmer of confidence, i second guess it a little while later and come crashing down. this is arguably worse!also, do other people even notice things like this when they look at each other? without being able to establish an accurate frame of reference, I can't see the warped perspective changing… When I look at people who i feel have beautiful skin, I look at it differently than I look at myself. I feel like I don't hyper-focus on any little blemishes or imperfections THEY might have, instead telling myself that they are surely poreless and without flaws. that assumption makes it even harder to feel okay!! i worry that unless i end up with completely and utterly flawless porcelain skin, i'll never feel good about it and i'll never feel like i've achieved anything.overall im afraid i won't be able to identify it if/when my skin becomes "good" and will still find ways to look at it hatefully and with contempt. after spending over a decade thus far convinced i'll always have what i view as hideous, unsightly skin, i'm afraid of being self conscious forever and unable to break free of that perception.I guess having problematic skin has been a part of my identity for so long that it's now an incredibly complicated and challenging process to feel any differently.if you experience this or anything like it please feel free to share your story here, i'd love to try and support you any way i can! thanks for reading, writing this was cathartic.

[product question] How effective is Lymecycline for acne?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm 24 yo and only really started getting spots/acne in the past couple of years. My skin was pretty clear throughout my teenage years and although I was a terrible picker, I didn't have much to pick.So I've started getting spots, a combination of papules, pustules, closed comedones and blackheads. I've tried lots of things, including the clinique 3 step, the OCM, konjac sponges and tea tree cleanser (probably the best response) and benzoyl peroxide. I was prescribed Zineryt to use topically last Jan, which didn't work, and then gave up on doctors as I thought it was my own fault for touching my skin too much. Only in the last few weeks have I decided to go back after getting some horrible deep spots. The GP gave me Lymecycline to take orally this time and he was optimistic that it would work. The GP described it as the "Rolls Royce" of acne meds, which made me feel positive about its potential, but when I got home and looked it up, people didn't seem so happy with it online. Has anyone tried it and what was the response?

[Product Question] Black Mask question

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I just bought a black mask - you know the one that you let completely dry onto your face and then peel off with your hands. I tried it once and its really hard to peel it off because I just keep ripping off very small pieces of it, instead of taking the whole thing off in 1 go and its taking me forever to do so. My question is, if I rinse the mask off with water insted of peeling it with my hands, will it have the same effect ( removing blackheads, helping with pimples, etc..)?

[Routine Help] Just had surgery, my skin looks awesome with 0 products on it for 5 days...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Seriously. My pores are gone, I haven't had any new breakouts and all I've done is a little bit of micellar water to take off the shininess from my forehead/remove the glue from my medical tape (LASIK surgery requiring eye shields). I WAS getting two zits but they disappeared almost immediately. Also, my skin isn't dry or flaky despite cold January weather and heating.I would just keep up this non-routine forever, but what about sunscreen? Super-minimalists, how do you do it? Can micellar water alone remove sunscreen adequately?Skin type: generally quite oily and clog-prone. Previous routine AM: Splash with water, apply Biore sunscreen PM: Wash with Purpose gentle cleansing wash, Differin to eliminate clogs, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel

[Skin Concerns] White skin exfoliated to dark black skin.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Around the corner of my eye(closest to my nose) from when I get out of the shower and use a towel to dry my face(I'm a guy).. I was using a sleeve of my shirt to wipe my eyes with when I cried for a month during my dog battling cancer and ended up dying and rubbed them really bad...So from the corner of my eye and down around the bottom of my eye is a dark black skin(no pigmentation at all showing) and after 2 months of not touching my face, I can see the skin growing back very slowly...It seems like this could take a year to get it fully back.Anyone else experience rubbing their facial skin so bad that your skin went to a black color? It's healing up, but very slowly.. I'm assuming I damaged all the layers of my skin (I see white bumps coming up from them, I guess it's producing new skin)
