[Skin concerns] Restylane / under eye fillers

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So for the last month or so I've been obsessed with concealing my under eye bags/dark circles/tear troughs/puffiness. I did a ton of research on lower bleph and dermal fillers and decided to schedule a consult with a facial plastic surgeon in my area to see what he thought. I was SO prepared to walk out with lower eye lid surgery scheduled. He thought in my case Restylane would do the trick. I went for it and am pretty pleased with the result. The top picture is obviously the before and the bottom is the morning after.I wanted to share because in my searches I didn't see many people talk about it here :).

[Review] [Sun Care] Sunscreen Odyssey Part I: Biore Watery Essence, Perfect Milk, Shiseido Senka, Bioderma Photoderm, Rohto Sunplay, others

Beauty Tips For Body Care
TLDR at bottom of post.Hey SCA, I feel a little weird about writing such a long post, but I’ve been grateful to read other peoples’ stories and reviews and I hope some future readers will find this helpful too :) This is Part I of my sunscreen odyssey, reviews of chemical/combo sunscreens. Background: through Skincareaddiction, I found out that the low-SPF facial lotion I was using was not good enough. I’ve always been the laziest of splash-with-water types, but when I started trying more intensive sunscreens, I needed to up my cleansing game. The whole thing kind of escalated, and while I'm pretty happy with the rest of my routine, finding the perfect sunscreen has become my white whale. Skin type: dry, sensitive, not especially acne-prone. A lot of products make my skin burn, although that has improved since going low-pH and moisturizing. I have thin/red/irritated skin around my nose and in my nasolabial folds, which I’m too lazy to accurately diagnose since it doesn’t affect me much. Don’t know my MAC shade officially, but I’d guess around a NC15ish - my skin is generally yellow, with a lot of redness in my face. I work crazy hours, and am often rushing out the door, so I never wear makeup - my morning routine needs to be 1) splash with water 2) sunscreen and that’s it. I live in the desert, so I need strong sun protection. Routine (in case people want to see if they have a similar routine/skin type as me)AMSplash with waterPut on sunscreen PMMineral oil OCMMiracle Rose Cleansing Stick (this is my only real “splurge” product - I could probably get away with Cerave hydrating, but this stuff is the highlight of my day)+/- AHA/BHA+/- rose hip oilCerave pm or Vanicream lite+/- Cerave in the tub/Albolene/Vaseline (honestly nothing compares to the way Vaseline makes my skin feel, I just hate having to deal with the pillowcases/towels) Reviews of Chemical/Combo SunscreensBiore Watery Essence/Watery Gel: because I’ve never had particular problems with breakouts, I just dove in and started with the most highly recommended sunscreen on the sub. I assumed that since my skin had always been low maintenance, that would be it - right? Wrong. Something about the Essence and the Gel just felt bizarrely harsh on my skin - I don’t know how to explain it but it was hard to not cringe as I put it on my face. Maybe it was the smell, or the alcohol? I agree with the lack of white cast, the absorption, all the things people love about it - I just couldn’t do it. I was shocked that I had to start putting more work into this. Biore Perfect Milk: this was the sunscreen that made me have to start thinking about skin tones, which became a perpetual scourge. I’ve never worn foundation, aside from occasionally some loose powder for shine, so I’ve never thought about my skin tone; I’m Eurasian, so I have mixed tones/undertones/whatever. I figured that since I was pale, I wouldn’t have to worry about white cast, and most people don’t seem to find the Perfect Milk too white...wrong again. I’ve come to think that there are different types of white cast, and whatever it was about the Perfect Milk, I looked like a mime taken ill. I was grey. I could tell objectively that it didn’t have that strong of a white cast, but it somehow looked worse than other sunscreens, even if the other ones had more actual whiteness. Another subreddit favorite down the drain... Shiseido Senka Mineral Water: I thought that maybe the issue with Biore was that it was too “drying,” and it sounded from Ratzillacosme like this one might be more moisturizing, so I gave it a shot. It also was more water-resistant than the Watery Essence, which sounded good. At first, it seemed like it fit the bill - it didn’t have the “harsh” feel of the Biore, and was somewhat moisturizing. It became my go-to for mornings when I was running late; however, I was still testing other sunscreens, so I never wore it for more than a day or two at a time...until I took it on vacation. We were going to my home coast, so I figured it would be a week of R&R for my dry desert skin. I wanted to travel light, so I only took the Senka.Big mistake. After a few days, I started to get massive cystic acne on my jawline. I have never had cystic acne before, so I knew something was off, but I didn’t have any topicals or BHAs with me. We were only there for 7 days, but by the end of the week, I had a ring of hugely swollen cysts all around my jaw and lower cheeks, where I don't generally break out. Everything else in my routine was the same - it had to be the Senka. Tragedy 1. I freaked out and spent the next 2 months doing damage control (and overexfoliating in the process...sigh). Not wanting to try anything new, I retreated to the other sunscreen I had been trialing, the Bioderma Photoderm. Bioderma Photoderm Max: I had been testing this on and off for months, and I knew it wouldn’t kill my skin, so I went back to it while I tried to recover from the horror of the Senka. This is the sunscreen that will forever live in my memory as the one that got away - I wanted it to be my HG soooo bad. Alcohol-free, moisturizing, crazy high PPD, affordable when you buy the big spray bottle (which I did), and I freaking love the smell. I still feel a twinge of regret when I think about it...but there were just a few too many dealbreakers. One of the problems was the issue of skin tone that I discussed above - despite the fact that I’m fair, the white cast from this when I used ¼ tsp was CRAZY. And it was weirdly proportion-dependent: I looked perfectly normal up to ⅙ of a tsp, and then as soon as I hit ¼, BAM! It was this thick white cakey layer. (I even calculated my face area to make sure I needed a full ¼ tsp, but I must have a really round face, because technically I need even more. Groan.)I tried so hard with the Bioderma, I really did. (Partly because I’m cheap and hate to get rid of something I had spent $40 on.) I tried mixing pigments, drops of colorfx, and even cocoa powder (until I found out from u/kindofstephen that’s a bad idea). I tried, for the first time in my life, to wear powder every day over it. I bought the tinted formulation and tried mixing, and then layering, the two together. The closest I got to solving the issue was putting a layer of the untinted Bioderma on, waiting 15 minutes, and then putting a mixture of the tinted + the regular over it. It sucked and was way more time than I wanted to spend, but I still would have made it work if the effects were ideal - but they weren’t. Even when I (finally) got the color right, it was still sitting on my face in this thick way; it would melt and slide around, and goop up around my nose, and make my pores super-visible by the end of the day. And it never felt really good, either - my skin always felt kind of itchy, which was bad because if I touched my face, the sunscreen would wipe off and leave a hole. I was looking into setting sprays, but finally decided to give up: this is not the droid I'm looking for. I can’t bring myself to throw it away until I find my HG, but...I know it’s not meant to be. Tragedy 2. Shiseido Anessa Perfect Essence: I had heard that this was super gentle, and again Ratzillacosme gave it rave reviews; but I was so paranoid after the Senka that I wouldn’t have tried it, except that I somehow bought it by accident. (I honestly don’t know how it happened - it was on my “to try” list and then showed up at my house, but I have no memory whatsoever of buying it. It wasn’t even very high on the list.) I tried it once - it had the same “harsh” feel and strong scent as Biore, so I didn’t bother testing it past that. Sunplay Super Block: sooo depressing. I thought this would be the non-irritating miracle cure to my HG hunt when I couldn't successfully wrangle the Bioderma. No alcohol, no harsh feel or smell, super moisturizing when I put it on, the white cast went away and kind of evened my skin tone, cheap, and the bottle is ~adorable~...but I started getting cystic acne again when I used it. I couldn’t believe it at first, so kept trying to use it, but by the end of the day would have those telltale painful swollen lumps. Unbelievable. This and the Senka both have Uvinul A, so maybe that’s the culprit? It could obviously be something else in the formulation, but I don’t have the strength of will to cross-reference every ingredient I’ve used. Tragedy 3. Supergoop Mineral: despite the name, this is a combo. I had it lying around and used to like it, until I learned how much you need to use. Womp womp. Previous use? No white cast. ¼ tsp? Ghostface. Plus, $$$. Shimmercy Sunscreen 2.0: I bought this as part of a promotion in exchange for an Amazon review, after learning it had a PPD of 15. Not a bad sunscreen, not much white cast, absorbed well. Made my skin feel like it had ants walking on it after a few hours. I was starting to get the picture that my skin miiiight not love chemical sunscreens, and I should start to...get physical. TL;DR:Skin type: dry, sensitive, redness, non-acne prone, NC15ishRejected Chemical/ComboBiore Watery Essence/Gel: cosmetically perfect; “harsh” feel; strong alcohol scentBiore Perfect Milk: strong alcohol scent; grey cast, ghostfaceSenka Mineral Water: great feel; cosmetically perfect; cystic acneBioderma Photoderm: great smell; moisturizing, thick; multiple cosmetic dealbreakers; made face kind of itchyShiseido Anessa: cosmetically elegant; “harsh” feel/smellSunplay Super Block: slight white cast; moisturizing; good feel; cystic acneSupergoop Mineral: great feel; white castShimmercy 2.0: cosmetically fine; no smell; texture fine; made skin itch Part II will cover the physical sunscreens I tried. Feel free to hit me up with any questions and I hope this has been helpful to others who are still in search of their HG sunscreen! Edit: formatting/words

[Acne] Spironolactone and birth control question

Beauty Tips For Body Care
If I'm taking spironolactone and ortho tri cyclen lo for hormonal acne, does timing matter? Of course I know to take medicine at the same time everyday. But I take spiro at 1pm and the BC at 9pm everyday (always on time). In order to be fully effective, should I take them at the same time? Both at 9pm? Or does that not matter? Thanks!

[Product question] AHA vs. BHA vs. Retinoid?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I read this post up and down, but am curious as to the difference between AHAs/BHAs and retinoids. I don't have inflammed acne, but I have a lot of deep closed comedones (stubborn SOBs) that I'm looking to get rid of. I don't know whether a combination of AHA + BHA would be more effective than a retinoid. All I really know about retinoids is that they speed up cell regeneration and improve collagen production.

[Routine help] Strawberry leg solution

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have always struggled with dark pores on my legs after shaving. I have a very fair skin tone, so I feel like they're extra noticeable. Anyone have any product/routine recommendations to combat this? I shave every 2-3 days with Gillette satin care sensitive skin and with a 4 blade mens razor, pro glide for sensitive skin blades. [Hair Removal] Shaving Beard and Razor Bumps/Burn

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Over the past few months I grew a beard (3 months now). Now the reason I grew the beard is because I live in New York, it's winter time and now that I have a very low body fat percentage, the cold to my face is painful, compared to the year before. The second reason is a more important one, and it is that I needed to not shave for a while because shaving began to hurt and I also wanted my razor bumps time to heal. Now I want to shave, since this beard looks scraggly and it makes me look dirty, what can I do for the razor bumps and the pain of shaving. When I was shaving, I shaved once a week with a safety and never used the same razor more than twice (I clean the razor, dry it and put it back into the paper after the first use). I used coconut oil but I used to use a shaving bar soap,I do not shaving against the grain and I used Bump Stopper after shaving but not everyday. Also would it be better for me to begin shaving with a machine, if it is, can you recommend me a good shaver that isn't too expensive. Thank you.EDIT: I am willing to spend 70 dollars USD or less for an electric shaver.

[Acne] [Routine Help] Acne prone mid twenties female looking to improve routine to improve condition of skin

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello! I'm a female, mid twenties, always had acne prone skin with a lot of acne scars and sun spots. I'm embarrassed to go anywhere without a full face of makeup. I'm looking for some advice for how to improve my routine to improve the condition of my skin. I've read through the ScA routine and suggested products and while I can already identify some holes in my routine from that, I've read a lot of conflicting reviews about each product so I thought I'd get some advice on what to try!My skin is pretty oily/problematic and a lot of products make me break out. I only recently found a foundation that doesn't make me break out. Here is what my face looks like with no makeup: one, twoMy current routine:Morning:Cleanse with Arcona Raspberry Bar -- I love Arcona's products but they are not really wallet friendly... Also I've been using a lot of their products for a long time now and I feel like they are not as effective as they once were for me.Moisturize/Sunscreen with Cetaphil Oil Control SPF 30 -- This product has been nice in that it doesn't make me break out like a lot of sunscreens and moisturizers seem to do. I should probably step up my SPF game and I've ordered a sample of Paula's Choice SPF 50 sunscreen. If that doesn't do it for me there were a couple others on the wiki I will try.NightRemove makeup with Yes to Cucumbers Face Wipes -- I like these because they don't feel rough on my face like a lot of face wipes I have tried. Also, I feel like going straight to my cleanser no matter how well it claims to remove makeup doesn't work.Cleanse with Philosophy Purity Cleanser or Mario Badescu Glycolic Foaming Cleanser or Arcona Cranberry Gommage Exfoliant. I guess I just rotate through these 3 products as I feel like it...Moisturize with Caudalie Overnight Detox Oil and used to use Arcona Magic White IceFrom the ScA routine I thought I should add a chemical exfoliant instead (I was going to order a sample of Paula's Choice 2% Liquid BHA. I also ordered a sample of the Resist Pure Radiance Skin Brightening Treatment.Otherwise, I'm reasonably happy with the products I use in that they don't make me break out, but maybe I could make better choices. I should also add that I don't get regular facials (I've had like two in my entire life) and I would like to remedy that, so it's something I would be open to doing regularly if it would help.

[Research] Basic Coconut Oil Guide (Benefits, Uses, Science, etc.)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
An edible cooking staple far before it burst onto the cosmetics scene, Coconut Oil is now widely used to maintain skin and hair-care. I've collected some info on Coconut oil here, hope you find it useful!Coconut Oil – TL;DRDigestible oil extracted from the Cocos Nucifera palm treeDry process produces refined coconut oil & wet process produces unrefined coconut oilHigh amounts of Lauric Acid which may have antibacterial propertiesStrong humectant and emollient properties make it an excellent full body & face moisturizerDeep penetration into hair follicles means protection from protein loss and hygral fatigueUse it for your skin, hair, or as a makeup removerLook for coconut oil that is unrefined, cold-pressed, and virgin or higherWhat it isCoconut Oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernels (the “meat”) of coconuts from the coconut palm tree (Cocos Nucifera). Over 90% of the world’s coconut oil is produced in Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the Indian Subcontinent[i].Coconut Oil is produced through one of two main processes – dry and wetThe dry process extracts coconut oil by dissolving the dried copra[ii] of the coconut with solvents and heat, which produces the oil and a mish-mash of protein and fiber. Coconut oil extracted through the dry process is typically refined afterwards, as the copra is usually dried in unsanitary conditions. This is known as RBD Coconut Oil – RBD stands for Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized. The wet process uses raw, straight-off-the-tree coconut to extract the oil. As it is a wet process, the oil comes out emulsified (mixed) in water. Heat, acids, enzymes, or electrolysis then separates the oil from the water. Coconut oil extracted through the wet process is typically unrefined. This means the oils retains the original properties of the source coconut, including taste, color, and smell.Fractionation and Hydrogenation are further refining and altering processes, however they relate to Coconut Oil used for cooking purposes so we won’t dive into that here.Coconut Oil is roughly 90%[iii] saturated fats by composition. The oil has negligible amounts of oleic and linoleic acid[iv], but over 50% of the fatty acid profile alone is Lauric Acid[v]. Lauric acid has been shown to have potential for antibacterial and antifungal properties (see below).Notably, because of the high amounts of saturated fats, Coconut Oil is slow to oxidize and can maintain a shelf-life of at-least 12 months[vi], probably longer.Anecdotally speaking, Coconut Oil has been reported to be highly comedogenic, meaning the facial application of the oil could cause clogged pores, or possibly even breakouts as well. Patch testing is highly recommended!BenefitsBelow are some of the most important benefits of Coconut Oil:Humectant:Coconut Oil has been shown in studies to be superior over mineral oil in preventing water-loss and treating dermatitis[vii]. It’s also as safe and effective as mineral oil as a moisturizer in general, and for treating xerosis[viii]Antibacterial:Lauric acid is converted by the body into monolaurin, which has some bacteria-fighting abilities. Virgin Coconut Oil was successfully used to control Staphylococcus Aureus levels and fight atopic dermatitis in-vitro[ix]. Lauric acid could even be used as a natural antibiotic against p.acnes[x], the bacteria associated with promoting acne vulgaris.Hair-Care:Coconut Oil can protect your hair against protein loss[xi], thanks again to the high levels of lauric acid which appears to have an affinity to hair proteins and enables the oil to deeply penetrate the hair shaft. Coconut oil is superior to mineral oil again here, as the former can deeply penetrate into hair while the latter cannot[xii]. The deeper penetration of coconut oil could protect your hair from hygral fatigue (over-moisturization of the hair leading to excessive and repetitive swelling/de-swelling).Wound Healing:Coconut oil could provide temporary relief from burn wounds and even help speed up healing.[xiii]What to use it forCoconut Oil is a very flexible cosmetic oil – aside from the usual skin and hair applications, you can use it on your lips, nails, hands, feet, and generally as a full body moisturizer.Below are some of the most common uses for cosmetic Coconut Oil:Skin Moisturizer:The science shows that Coconut oil is at least as good as, if not better than mineral oil for skin moisturizing purposes. Use it as a daytime or nighttime moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Coconut Oil also has some emollient properties, meaning it can help your skin feel overall smoother and softer. For your Hair:Use coconut oil on your hair, either pre-wash or post-wash, and whether damaged or undamaged to provide deep-penetration moisture, and to prevent protein loss in the hair follicles. You can use pure coconut oil on your hair, or use shampoos and conditioners which contain some coconut oil.Makeup Removal:You can use coconut oil on its own to remove makeup from your face, with the oil acting as a sort of cleanser – the principle behind the ‘oil cleansing method’ of makeup removal. Mixing the coconut oil with another oil, such as Jojoba or Castor is another option. Again, patch test before trying something like this! What to look forUnrefined:Refined Coconut Oil comes from the dry process and is chemically bleached to remove its coloring, and is de-odorized through an extremely high-heat process. Solvents and chemicals are often added to act as preservatives. Unrefined Coconut Oil comes from the fresher, raw wet process and retains the original properties of the oil. Stick to unrefined if possible.Cold-Pressed:This means the oil was extracted from the plant mechanically, and that no extra heat was added to the process to induce extraction. The temperature doesn’t rise higher than 50 degrees, and so more of the oils natural and original properties are retained. Cold-pressed is one of two ways of expeller (mechanically) pressing the oil from the kernels, the other being heat-press. As both are mechanical methods of extracting the oil, you should be ok with either cold or expeller pressed. Ultimately, if you can, go with cold pressed.Virgin or higher:Look for an oil that is at-least virgin quality. These oils are from the very early pressings of the plant used to extract the oil, tend to be the least acidic, and have the strongest organoleptic properties (taste, smell, appearance, etc.). Coconut oil isn’t too pricey so if you can swing extra-virgin, go for it!Note: I would avoid oils that do not state these key characteristics (what kind of pressing, whether refined or not, and quality). At the very least, make sure your oil names the plant it came from! Some Final TipsCoconut oil has a reputation, whether deserved or undeserved, for being comedogenic. Patch test!Store your oil in a dry, dark place at room temperature[i] http://www.apccsec.org[ii] This is what copra is - http://www.usesofcoconut.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/copra5.jpg[iii] http://www.uccs.edu/Documents/danderso/fats_oils.pdf[iv] ~6% oleic acid & ~2% linoleic (see tables) - http://www.banglajol.info/index.php/BJSIR/article/view/669/685[v] http://www.banglajol.info/index.php/BJSIR/article/view/669/685[vi] Study testing the oxidative stability of coconut oil –http://journal-of-agroalimentary.ro/admin/articole/35400L04_Moigadean_Vol.18_4_2012_272-276.pdf[vii] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24320105[viii] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15724344[ix] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19134433[x] The study has in-vitro AND in-vivo results! –http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2772209/[xi] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12715094[xii] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11413497[xiii] Here’s a study on coconut oil reducing burn wounds on rats –http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20040946/

[Routine help] Hauling vicariously through my boyfriend in Bangkok

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Good evening! My boyfriend is a chef and is going to work for 2.5 weeks at some beautiful restaurants in Bangkok. We were there this time last year, and it must have been just JUST before I got into AB- I'm kicking myself! I want to send him with a shopping list, as we are based on the Sunshine Coast, in QLD and as you can imagine my opportunities to acquire everything I need/want are few and far between. Do you have any suggestions for the easiest places for him to visit on my behalf, and anything in particular I should get him to pick up for me? He'll have a short attention span and be weary from working so I want to be as specific as I can about where to go, and what I need :) Here's my routine at the moment:AMCOSRX Good morning low PH cleanserMIZON Snail recovery gel creamPMSHU UMERA oil cleanserPHISOFEX Anti bacterial washAHA/BHA on alternate/every third dayMIZON AIO Snail repair creamSheet mask/ Innisfree SUPER Volcanic Pore Clay Mask if things are pretty grimyCan you see any gaps in my routine? [Routine Help] Is using a moisturizer necessary if I use a toner with oil?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
For the past year, I have been just using a toner instead of a moisturizer to "moisturize" after cleansing. mostly because most moisturizers I have used left a sticky feeling to my skin. this toner leaves my skin feeling "natural" immediately. It's age perfect by L'Oreal and it contains castor oil. My skin never feels dry after using it but I read here about how important a moisturizer is.I am trying to even out my skin tone. Should I start using a moisturizer?

[Skin Concerns] Does compression clothing help or hinder loose skin?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
TL;DR: Lost 200 pounds, will have loose skin. Doing massive research into it, can't find much on usage of compression on loose skin. Since I have no choice but to make a decision, which would you believe to be the correct one: Using compression clothing, or not using it.In a few months - I'll have lost near 200 pounds. I'm a 22 years old, 5'11, medium build, male.I would like to put in the work necessary to fix this damage - I'm aware surgery is a option but the less skin needing removal, the better. So I'm doing whatever I can to avoid it, or at the very least - assist it.So should I compress my skin using compression clothing - or not compress it.People argue that because you compress it - you relieve the stress on the skin and giving it a form to fit.But at the same time without compression, I'm stressing the skin - possibly aiding in tightening the loose skin. (i.e: homeostasis - and the basic premise behind improving all skin damage through fibro)What are your thoughts?NOTE: I have used the search, I've spent over 70 hours researching this. I used the hell out of the search, I'm even reading introductory dermatology material. I'm asking a niche question that doesn't get much attention.

[Product Question] Why does some argan oil smell strongly like nuts while other doesn't smell at all?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So I recently got into organic coldpressed argan oil. And its awesome! Works absolutely perfect for me. I ordered 100ml the first time and decided to order another 250m this time. Now the first didn't smell at all. Now the new orger smells very strongly like nuts. Its not really a terrible smell its definitely bearable. But I really wonder is this a bad or good sign? Any why does some of it smell while others dont? Both seem to work fine for me, so far the one that didnt smell I can definitely say its working as I used it for 3month. The smelly one I m using for 2 weeks now so far no difference besides the smell.Does anyone know where this comes from?

[Acne] Male 28 acne battle (more like war) advice needed

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I have been battling acne basically since I was a teenager and although it’s not as bad as it once was it has persisted well into my late 20’s and is something that is constantly on my mind. I have been all over the internet and tried a bunch of random different things during that time but can’t seem to mitigate it and lately I feel it’s gotten worse. I have looked through other top posts on treatment reviews / cystic acne etc but I just don’t feel I know enough about what would help in my situation. I see a lot of positive stories on this sub and am hoping maybe if I share my journey anyone who has been in a similar place might be able to help me out.Current Routine:AM Shower - Dermalogica – Clearing Skin Wash Post Shower – Pro Derm – Hydrogel (My skin is very dry and ever since my second try on Accutane (years ago) I have continued to use this)PM Wash Face - Dermalogica – Clearing Skin Wash Go after any current pimples with Calamine Lotion I recently started doing Muka Honey Masks again (recently as in today when I noticed another cyst coming) and plan on doing it a couple times a week.History -As mentioned above I have done two runs on Accutane which helped for a while but the acne always came back and now my skin gets very very dry. Also did a bunch of other random antibiotics back in the day before they put me on Accutane the first time. -In my late teens and early 20’s my parents spent a fortune on Blu-U treatments for me which maybe moderately helped? A few years ago I tried using a Tanda Zap and seemed to have some results with it. - I live in a fairly humid climate now (Australia) but up until about a year ago I lived in a very dry climate (the idea that being in a more humid environment might actually help my skin weighed in my decision) - I get some exercise, not a gym rat by any means but try and get out for runs, bikes rides or squash a few times a week. - Diet – my diet I know has not been the best in the past but I have improved it the last month or so very little sugar / decent fruit and vegetables. I do have Greek yogurt and flat white coffees (Latte) every morning and have seen a lot of posts about removing dairy as a way to stop it.What I am looking -I have been considering going back to a Dermatologist, but am pretty hesitant just based on poor experiences / money grabs in the past. - Evaluation of my current routine and if there is anything obvious I am doing wrong. - Potential first steps I should take or new items I should add to my routine / test. Or even lifestyle things I should be changing. - Potential ways to go after the damaged skin I have from old acne (scars / redness sometimes even blackness)

[Acne] F/18 I've had acne for 8 years and no dermatologist has helped. Please help me.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hi, I'm 18 and I've had acne since I was 10, as the title reads. I've been to too many dermatologists to count and none of the products they have given me have worked at all. Not even a slight improvement. Here's my skin--- http://imgur.com/a/tJKdsI have tried many different products, creams, antibiotics, washes, toners, moisturizers, everything. Nothing has helped. The only thing I can remember ever helping me was birth control, but the last time I took it was a year ago.I am a vegan and I only drink water. I eat very clean, lots of fruits and veggies and I limit my bread to 2 slices per day. Eating as a vegan has helped my skin, but it's still not under control. I don't break out with white heads as often as I used to, and my breakouts themselves aren't nearly as bad. I don't wear make up often, maybe once every 2 weeks or so. If I do, it's Tarte foundation on my skin and a small bit of eye/eyebrow make up.I recently(as in this week) have started using Dr. Bronners Magic Soap in Tea Tree via recommendations from friends. I also have essential oil face cloths that my cosmetologist Aunt made for me. They are tea tree, rosemary and lavender. Within the past six months I have used natural activated charcoal cleansers and african black soap cleansers that worked well for a few weeks and wound up making my skin worse.Part of me thinks it might be an allergic reaction to something, or it could just be that I'm not taking good enough care. I don't know. Please suggest only natural products that are not tested on animals and do not contain animal products like honey and milk. I am done putting harsh chemicals on my skin.Thanks.

I am in love with Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate and I just recently finished up my first bottle. I definitely would like to continue using facial oils nightly but before I re-purchase I'm wondering if there are other facial oils I should consider in place of Kiehl's?

[Routine Help] Do you guys use AHA/BHA on your body?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I know for many of you, you use chemical exfoliation like AHA/BHA over physical exfoliation because it's gentler, boosts collagen production, etc. But for the body, do you also use chemical exfoliation? It seems more of a hassle for the body because you need a lot more product, and also a lot of you do a 30-minute wait-time between AHA/BHA and moisturizer to get the full benefits of the AHA/BHA. It's not as annoying for the face, but for the body, I don't like the idea of standing there naked for half an hour, or even the hassle of having to put clothes on and strip down later. In addition, I know it's best to moisturize your body immediately after showering since your skin is moist, and that 30-minute wait will certainly parch my body skin. So, with this in mind, do any of you do chemical exfoliation on the body? If so, what products do you recommend? Do you also do a wait-time; if so, how do you troubleshoot the problems that I've mentioned? Also, how often do you use it?

[Skin Concerns] I moved from the most humid city in my country to the driest 2 years ago. My skin has snowballed ever since. Will it ever adjust?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm a 23 year old female. Growing up my skin was relatively okay. I've always suffered from nodular/cystic acne, but basically my skin would be perfect except for one at a time cysts. I never wore make up in high school. My 'routine' was simply washing my face once or twice a day with generic face soap.As the title says, 2 years ago I moved across the country to the driest city and now my skin is a nightmare. It's ridiculously dry and leathery, but also constantly covered in breakouts. Because it's so dry the acne kind of just gets super scabby and red. I also suddenly get terrible hormonal acne all along my jaw (I sadly cannot take hormonal birth control due to medical reasons).I currently use the Body Shop tea tree oil line of stuff along with the "DROPS OF YOUTH™ BOUNCY SLEEPING MASK" every night since I've found gels seem to take longer to be absorbed by my skin. I've tried a closet full of moisturizers and they all either break me out or do nothing at all. Will I be stuck struggling to fight my skin as long as I live here? Every time I go home to visit for a few weeks my skin clears up briefly. People say if you wash your hair too much, it starts to overproduce oils to make up for the ones you remove. Will my face ever do the same thing to make up for this environment?

I naturally have clear skin, but it's dry so I'm looking to add a night moisturiser (I have one with SPF already). I'm having terrible luck finding one - they either give me pimples or they give me those deep big hard red bumps under my skin that last for weeks :(. (I currently have four thanks to Olay). I don't need anything age-defying or anything, since I have a script for retin-a (that I haven't started and am waiting to find a good moisturiser first).Things that I've tried:CeraVe - the blue one that's so popular hereCeraVe, the light blue one that's an AHAOlay, red jar - Regenerist Micro Sculpting CreamOlay, the purple jar - Regenerist Night Recovery CreamOlay, white jar - Regenerist Deep Hydration Regenerating CreamElta MD moisturiserElta MD sunscreenNeutrogena sunscreen for babiesNeutrogena visibly even moisturiserAveeno night creamThings that do NOT break me out:Neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair - but that dries out my skin moreNeutrogena healthy defense daily moisturiser with sunscreen SPF 30 - but this doesn't help at night, and also, the 50 breaks me outI'm headed to an all natural store soon to try my luck there. [Acne] Please help me. My back acne has caused me misery and shame for ten years and I need to do something about it.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had acne on my face and back for about ten years now (I'm a 23 year old woman). I've managed to reduce the acne on my face a lot and now just suffer from hormonal acne and mild rosacea.Pics here. The acne on my back is just awful. I feel so ashamed by it, I always keep it hidden even from my family and my SO. Aside from how it looks it is extremely painful and a lot of the time I can't even wear a bra because the straps hurt my shoulders so much.I had really long hair and thought that might be irritating my shoulders so I cut it all off and that hasn't made a difference at all.As a teenager I tried every prescription drug the doctor would give me and lots of different creams and gels. Nothing worked however I will admit that as a teenager I wasn't very good at keeping to a routine and I think perhaps I could have done more.I have a healthy lifestyle (I don't drink or smoke) and I'm fairly active. I'm not currently applying anything to my shoulders and just wash them in the shower. The only thing I am not willing to try is accutane. Please help!

[Skin Concerns] Red, dry and tight, irritated face..:(

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Sorry in advance for this super long ramble/rant at myself! I'm feeling pretty stressed about my skin right now. D: At the moment, it's just quite dry and kind of tight (especially on my forehead) and redness on both forehead and cheeks. My bad skin started around two weeks ago but prior to this, my skin-type was dry (not as dry as now) and sensitive skin. I did not have constant redness, but every odd or so occasion it would go a bit red only on the cheeks. My forehead started getting quite dry and hard(?)..I'm not sure how to explain it. But there were small bumps and patches of dry skin. My cheeks started going a bit pink, but I didn't think too much of it. I think the cause was that I switched cleansers as I decided my previous one probably wasn't good for my skin cos of the fragrance. I switched it out to try out another sample cleanser I had at home which was Mer's cleansing gel (bad choice). I think I was also trying out DHC's cleansing oil to clean my makeup, which also was ultimately another bad decision. Cringing now that I'm writing this out, I sound like a massive idiot for bombarding my face all at once. :(This all prompted the worse skin I have ever experienced; it went reallyy red, feeling really hot and super dry on some days as well. Redness is on both cheeks and forehead, and blotchy redness on upper lip. However skin on t-zone and like 1cm out from my nose is soft and fine, but cheeks are dry, more rough and tight. I have experienced something like this before...redness on those specific areas of the face (which I find a bit weird?) but definitely not as worse or as prolonged as this time.I cut out all those cleansers and the cleansing oil I was using, and went back to an all natural facial soap (I had been using this for a long time previously with no problems). I tried yoghurt and honey face masks, cucumber masks, and several face masks. These masks all helped out to regain moisture in my face but the redness persisted. I've been trying to rest my face for the past couple of days. The redness has calmed slightly, but my skin feels quite dry and tight still.Short routine as of now: - Babyscent's natural soap - Babyscent's facial cream (I've been using these two babyscent products for a couple of years with no problem/no bad reaction) - Nature Republic's Aloe gelI've been thinking of seeing a dermatologist too..but right now I would appreciate any help and advice on how to replenish my skin/what products I should use to help soothe/heal my dry and red skin. Thanks for reading all of this!A few photos of the bad reactions/redness

[Routine Help] Bit unsure about the order of products and if I'm doing things right.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My entire life I never really cared about my face, and I assumed I'd always have terrible skin. After reading this sub I decided to try and start a regimen. I read as much info as I could, but the names of products and stuff really confused me. So I wonder if someone could maybe help me out. I am currently using the OCM, which involves massaging in oil (castor oil/olive oil) into my face usually while I'm in the shower, then wiping it off with a microfibre cloth, then I splash some toner on and wipe that off, then I put some SPF moisturiser on.I don't know if that's right or not. Anyway I have quite noticible SFs and I thought I'd be stuck with them forever before I found this sub... so I've done the above for a few weeks now but not really noticed any difference. I read in some of the posts that salicyclic acid is good and lots of people were raving about neutrogena spot stress control, which I received today in the post. salicyclic acid is listed in the ingredients so I am positive about it. It says that it's an 'ultra-light spot treatment moisturiser' whatever that means (perhaps I bought the wrong one?)So should it be applied instead of moisturiser? What's the general idea here? Should I use a toner with AHA as this one doesn't appear to have any good ingredients (and contains alcohol which is probably bad too), and if so can anyone suggest a suitable UK product?I live in the UK so many named products on here don't exist, and stuff has different names, so I tend to just go by ingredients. All help really appreciated, I think it's a bit tougher being a guy that I am going into this having no idea at all and it's not really a topic of conversation to have with your mates!

It looks terrible and feels gross. I am also getting deep pimples that rise up over numerous days and take ages to heal after (hydro colloidal band aids are my life saver).I wash my face morning and night with clean and clear foaming cleanser, and moisturize with Aveeno daily moisturizer (SPF during the day). [Anti-Aging] Considering going to my lovely doctor for a script for tretinoin/Retin A. Any advice?

I have a great routine with all the anti-aging regulars: a gentle cleanser, retinol serum in the PM, BHA in the AM, AHA in the PM, antioxidant serum, vit c serum, and sunscreen every damn day without fail. After lurking obsessively on this sub for the last 6 months and my 30th birthday looming, I am seriously considering using tretinoin. My regular doctor is a super lovely guy, and I am going to ask him for a script for 0.05% tretinoin, as I don't think I need 0.1%. [Cringe] [Personal] I gave my little sister a bottle of moisturiser. It was so good her BF's mother STOLE IT.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
My little sister wears a lot of heavy make-up. She's 22, hella smart and very pretty, but struggles with self confidence. For her 21st birthday, I gifted her with a huge Paula's Choice hamper-style goodie bag with products for acne prone and oily skin. One of these products was the Skin Balancing Invisible Finish Moisture Gel. She almost cried when she opened it, she was thrilled and gave me a huge hug. She has struggled with acne and oily skin since she was 12 and I knew it made her feel self-conscious.Fast forward almost a year later and her skin is, in her words 'perfect' and she loves all the products. Her and her BF are crashing at his parent's for a couple of weeks while they search for a new rental place. When it comes time to leave BF's parents, Little Sister is relieved as no matter how hard she tries to be kind, BF's mother is a bitch to her and treats her like shit. When the time comes to pack, she can't find her bottle of SB gel. She thinks she has lost it in the move.Jump ahead in time again and Little Sister and BF are visiting his parents. Little Sister catches his mother showing BF's brother's girlfriend HER bottle of SB gel and telling the girlfriend it was amazing, she should totally try it!Needless to say, she was furious and later confronted BF's mother and demanded it back. BF's mother gave it back to her, and thankfully didn't use it all up. But seriously, WTF?!tl/dr: That one time PC products inspired petty larceny in a middle-aged woman.

[Skin Concerns] Does mineral oil make fungal acne worse?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I recently started using Mineral oil for OCM and it's been great so far. It hasn't broken me out, so I assume I'm one of the people who benefits from OCM. I also recently think my forehead broke out with fungal acne, and I'm not sure of the cause. Possibly a conditioner I used that didn't agree with my skin (not sure if you can get fungal acne from something like that). One night I used the mineral oil on my face, and it was fine on the rest of my face except my forehead which seemed to make it worse. Is this actually from the mineral oil at all? I bought a bar of zinc soap for it, and it seem's to be making my forehead better. Can I continue to use the mineral oil there if the fungal acne clears up, or do I run the risk of having it come back?

[Research] Basic Almond Oil Guide (Benefits, Uses, Science, etc.)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Almond Oil has been used historically in Ancient Chinese and Indian medicines to treat skin conditions. Today it’s a popular moisturizer, desired for its very high vitamin & mineral content, and long-lasting application. I've collected some info on Almond here, in all it's a pretty basic and simple oil.Almond Oil – TL;DRA nut oil extracted from tree kernels Prunus DulcisSignificant amount of Oleic Acids, could cause blockages so make sure to patch testVery high in vitamin E – mild sun protection benefits, good anti-oxidantUse for your skin, hair, as a carrier oil, or as a makeup removerLook for sweet, unrefined, cold-pressed oil if possibleWhat It IsAlmond Oil, also known as Oleum Amygdalae is a nut oil extracted from the seeds of the Almond Tree (Prunus Dulcis). The majority of the world’s supply of almonds comes from the United States, with California alone purported to supply roughly 80% of the globe’s almonds[i].Almond Oil appears as a thick, slightly viscous fluid. The oil contains approximately 65-75% Oleic Acid and roughly 15-25% Linoleic Acid[ii]. The high amount of oleic acid present suggests that the oil could have clogging effects on your skin, especially if you are acne-prone or oily to begin with.Unrefined Almond oil appears with a slight yellow tinge to its color. Sweet almond oil has nutty smell which can be quite strong to some and mild to others. Bitter almond oil has a very strong smell, described as smelling like cherries.Refined almond oil typically appears as colorless and odorless.Almond oil has a relatively stable shelf life, and can be used for a significant length of time, provided it is stored for properly – in a cool, dark, and dry place. Like other oils, it’s recommended to use Almond oil within 6-12 months to get the most out of the nutrients in the oil.BenefitsAlmond oil has not been studied as extensively for skin-care purposes as other oils, but it has been claimed to hold anti-inflammatory properties, cicatrizing (wound healing) capabilities, and even cardiovascular benefits. Below, I cover the most likely benefits of Almond Oil, backed up by science.Nutrients:Almonds are exceptionally high in vitamin E, a noted anti-oxidant[iii] that could help fight against cellular damage. The oil is also high in B-complex vitamins as well as Zinc – important for hair health and thickness[iv].Anti-aging:Almond oil was shown a study to fight against UV-induced aging[v], which could make it a useful oil to apply before headed out into the sun, if lacking sunscreen.Cardioprotective:Almond oil, when consumed, has positive effects on HDL and even helps lower LDL, along with lowering plasma triglyceride levels[vi]Unlike Jojoba or Argan, the science on Almond Oil is lacking quite a bit, which doesn’t seem to faze marketers. I have seen it hyped as a treatment for stretch marks (limited science[vii] on this), and as treatment to fix scars (no science on this!).What to use it forAlmond oil is a pretty flexible moisturizer; you can use it for your face, hair, body, lips, and even your nails. Below are the most typical uses.Skin:Almond oil keeps the skin moisturized and hydrated by acting as an occlusive (prevents water from evaporating off the skin.) It is quite long-lasting; a single application should get you through the bulk of the day. A good, no-frills option for a natural moisturizer.Hair:Almond oil can be used to keep your scalp and locks hydrated, and provides a quick and easy sheen to your hair. The high amount of vitamin E means this tocopherol-rich oil acts a great conditioner as well. Apply it on a standalone basis or you can use shampoos and conditioners which contain the oil.Carrier Oil:Use almond oil to dilute any essential oil you want to use, such as tea tree oil. The blend can then be applied as a moisturizer or cleanser.Makeup Removal:Almond oil is commonly used either on its own to remove makeup, or as part of an oil blend designed to cleanse the face of makeup. What to look forSweet:Probably the most important distinction for almond oil is whether it is sweet or bitter. Sweet almond oil is a long-lasting emollient (moisturizer), is rich in tocopherols and other vitamins, has mild anti-aging effects, and can be used for culinary purposes. Bitter almond oil is an extremely potent essential oil not to be used for direct skin-care, but more so in diluted form to add scent to other cosmetics (e.g. soaps). Be conservative here, if the label doesn’t identify the oil as ‘Sweet’ then move on.Unrefined:As usual, look for an oil that is unrefined. Refined Almond Oil is chemically bleached to remove its natural gold coloring and is de-odorized through an extremely high-heat process. Solvents and chemicals are often added to act as preservatives. Refined oils lose much of what makes Almond Oil so amazing, like its high levels of tocopherols. Unrefined Almond Oil avoids these pitfalls and gives you the most it has to offer. If you do not like the natural smell, go for an oil that is naturally refined (via steam or diatomaceous earth) as opposed to chemically refined.Cold Pressed:This means the oil was extracted from the plant mechanically, and that no extra heat was added to the process to induce extraction. Ultimately, if you can, go with cold pressed.Note: I would avoid purchasing any almond oil that does not state these features (i.e. whether sweet or bitter, unrefined or refined, and what type of pressing was used). Some Final TipsAlmond oil is a powerful emollient with high levels of Oleic Acid. Make sure to patch test to see if the oil breaks you out or clogs your pores excessivelyStore in a a cool, dark, and dry place[i] http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-california-almonds-20140112-story.html[ii] Here’s a study breaking down the fatty acids in Almond Oil –http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18461963[iii] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17561088[iv] Here’s a study showing how subjects with hair loss had lower serum zinc levels vs. a control group - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24371385[v] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17348990[vi] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11925464[vii] A study showing how Almond Oil somewhat improved stretch marks in pregnant women (note it is bitter almond oil!) -http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22594386

[Cringe] or maybe [PSA] - Dollarama face masks...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I know what you're thinking. Why would you put something on your face that came from a dollar store?Well, I checked out the ingredients and was fairly impressed. The kaolin clay mask I bought was made in Korea, had a bunch of good ingredients I recognized, and the price wasn't far off from masks you'd buy anywhere else, so I wasn't suspicious. On top of that, after trying it out, I was actually initially impressed. When I woke up the morning after using it my skin tone had improved, my pores seemed a little less visible, and the texture of my skin was a tad smoother. Win! ... Until a day later, when I started leaking blue-green from my pores.I have been expelling this blue-green dye from my face for almost a week now. It's not visible on my face, so I don't look like a smurf or anything - but when I wash my face and use my toner, the cotton pad always comes off blue-green.My point here is, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.If anyone wants to know more about the specifics of the product I'll be happy to tell you, I think I still have the empty package as on day 1 I had been planning to stockpile them.

[Routine Help] OCM/BHA purging has (to my satisfaction) brought blackheads to the surface. Is extraction a viable option? (self.SkincareAddiction)

Beauty Tips For Body Care
(Normal skin with mild dryness and some excess oil, blackheads, SFs in t-zone and overall dullness of complexion.)I recently started a ScA-inspired regime to battle blackheads and SFs and hopefully restore brightness to a complexion that suffered from years of unhealthy acne treatments and general neglect/abuse from picking. Luckily, acne outbreaks are no longer much of an issue for me but I'm still battling other skin issues.I'm one week into my OCM and BHA regime and I'm seeing some results but mostly I've felt blackheads becoming much more pronounced on the surface. When I'm washing my face I feel pronounced "hard plugs". I'm pretty skeptical about this exfoliating regime's ability to fully extract them. They're right under the surface but they're stubborn. Is it acceptable for me to use an extraction tool to simply lift them out?I want these plugs out of my face for once and for all! I'm eagerly anticipating my new clean canvas.

[Acne] Description of a natural routine to combat acne - do you agree?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Curious to hear this community's thoughts on this young woman's description of going natural to combat acne problems, linked here: http://nomoredirtylooks.com/2016/01/joannas-morning-skin-and-hair-routine-exposed/?theme=nomoredirty_newSome of it sounds reasonable, some of it sounds dubious. More on the dubious end of things is the fact that she does not wear sunscreen because it breaks her out.

[Skin Concerns] Seeing a derm Monday for unrelated issue, but wondering what these spots on my fingers are until then.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I've had these for about 2 years now. They've never grown or shrank. One that's not shown in the pictures below is next to the one I'm the first photo, but it's similar to the round one in photo 2.As I said, I'll ask my derm monday. I just never thought anything about them since they never spread, nor grew. And as you can see, are tiny tiny.Any advice before I go in would be welcomed! Thanks.http://imgur.com/a/FkNLxMy only initial guess is warts, but it's been a while and I'd assume a wart would have grown?Possibly dyschosis eczema? However, I thought those went away and came back in intervals. These have just... existed.Edit: They don't itch, and are painless.

[Acne] Quitting Smoking And Breakouts.. ANSWER FOUND

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I was perplexed by this, but ever since I quit smoking I've been breaking out terribly (22 y/o male). If you type in "Quitting Smoking Acne" on Google there is literally hundreds of people (various sites combined) citing the same problem. Well I finally found a couple studies that pretty much say this (source):http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15922096I guess without nicotine your body will over inflame everything after getting used to it.I don't know what to do about this, I've quit for 6 months after only smoking for 3 years and my acne has exploded. I've seen accounts of people with the same problem after even longer. Seriously considering going back to like one cig a day, Differin hasn't helped much :/Thought I'd share. Thanks for any input.

[acne] mounds on cheeks suddenly burst

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I just got back home for the night and noticed that one of the mounds on my cheekbones seemed larger and yellow-ish. I decided to wash my face, like I normally would and suddenly nearly all 3 mounds on both sides are bleeding out of what feels like a gaping whole in the middle. I panicked and put BP on to quell the bleeding, but I don't know what to do now. I have no hydrocolloid bandages and I am out of facemask. I have no idea what happened- admittedly I forgot to wash my face this morning and ate less well than usual, but I didn't pick or treat my skin roughly. The weather in my area did not change, and my skin didn't feel dry or anything. I've never experienced this before and I'm terrified this will add to my already embarrassing PIH! Any advice is appreciated!

[Routine Help]From BP Oil Spill to California Drought - My Face is a Natural Disaster!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
After cruising on /r/SkincareAddiction for almost a year, I was fed up with reading and decided to act. (My skin, my choice!) This story begins with sensitive, acne prone, oily/combination skin and an optimistic Redditor:I was just starting out, and the world looked positive and full of hope. I decided on the following routine after careful reading: Cetaphil gentle cleanser, witch hazel (yes, the kind with alcohol - please refrain from smiting until the end of the story), Stridex Max, and Cetaphil PM moisturizer. This routine came easy since I knew most of the products "worked" for me in the past, in that they didn't break me out. But, like a good SCAer, I started with a patch test, waited, incorporated into routine, repeated. The results were slow but improving none the less. Eventually, I my skin became almost completely clear with the occasional two-ish weeks of perfect skin. Two weeks, SCA!?! I thought only celebrities were worthy of perfect skin. And when I begin to tell you how soft my skin was-- Let's just say my lovely fiancée described it as "vagina soft." swoonThen came winter. The heater off and on, on and off. Almost all night! My once suppled, blimish-free skin began to crack. Nothing like those old Roc commercials. I would find specks of blood on my pillow but could never pinpoint the immediate source. Then came bedtime when I would do my routine. Everything was normal, until I applied a Stridex pad to my face. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment so I'm sure my neighbor's kids have new words to teach their friends. Nevertheless, I grit down and finished my routine. Oh the sweet, sweet immediate relief of moisturizer on my face that smothered, what felt like, flames.SCAers, I know what you're thinking: Surely, after going through hell with the Stridex pad you stopped your routine and focus on the immediate issue of burning, dry skin, right? And give up my acne-free (with the occasional two blemishes here and there) skin!?! What are you, stupid?! A moment of silence as I pay tribute to my stupidity. After almost a week of ignoring all the signs. A full, distracted day of wanting to take my boar's hair brush to my entire face. I realize now there are some things worst then pimples. So, I sit here, slathered in Vaseline, telling you all of my cautionary tale so that you do not make the same mistakes I did. I am welcoming any advice/suggestion that could aid this immediate problem of super dry skin. Despite it all, I love this community and continue to be optimistic about my future skin endeavors.TL;DR: As someone that suffered from oily skin, dry skin is the worst.Edits for simplifying sentences.

Been taking long and steamy baths for years which has resulted in my skin being bright red and dry. What should I use to help get back to natural? [Skin Concerns]

Beauty Tips For Body Care
In a bid to be healthier for 2016 I'm trying to take a much greater interest in my appearance. For the last two years I have had bright red dry skin on my t-zone and have never decided to do much about it besides the odd bit of moisturizer.I'm fairly certain this is caused by having long, hot steamy baths (sometimes twice a day, I realized I was stupid and just have a quick lukewarm shower now). What should I do to get my skin back to it's normal state?

[Routine Help] Everything is dry!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hello r/SkincareAddiction,This question may also be relevant for r/haircarescience, but I thought I'd come here first since this dryness affects my entire body.I have had very dry skin since I was a child -- not sure if it's psoriasis, eczema or a different affliction (parts of my hands and elbows get red and dry, in and behind my ears gets dry and flakey, scalp/eyebrows/beard get flakey) -- I have just tried to tough it out most of my life since I am just not really sure how to deal with it effectively, but for my New Year's resolution I want to take some very deliberate steps in really taking care of my skin.Soooo,I was wondering if any of you have suggestions of ways to deal with my scalp. I wake up with TONS of tiny dry flakes on my hair and it's quite embarrassing. I can rinse them off in the shower or sink really quick, but by the afternoon they are visible again. >:(Here's a pic: http://imgur.com/a/rk2jZAs of the last month or so I have been shampooing about every 3 days, but conditioning/acv almost every day (sometimes it is every other). I sometimes also put lotion on my scalp, but it makes my hair feel weird so I don't do that too much.Any comments or links to resources would be immensely appreciated! What has worked for you??

On Tuesday night my scalp was sooooo tender I could barely touch my hair, and on the top of my head I could feel that it was a bit crusty. I used a Scalp Therapy spray that I have from Lavigne Organics and it helped so much, instant relief from the pain and so far it has not returned since using the spray... My question is, has this happened to anyone else? Could it be my shampoo causing this problem? I have used Dove for years, with no issues until now. [Research] The pH of Exfoliating Toners: A Spreadsheet.

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey y'all! I was browsing this sub yesterday night to enhance my education on pH dependency 'n' stuff when I realised that we actually don't really have any spreadsheets for the pH of exfoliating toners! I know of several pH spreadsheets for cleansers, and of course there are loads of bits and pieces on specific products scattered all over the sub, but wouldn't it be nice to have it all collected in one big spreadsheet?A few helpful links on pH dependency of toners:Putting your products in order, including pH-dependent acids. by u/SnowWhiteandthePearWhy a proper pH of cosmetic products is important for skin health. Main statements of that post:The lower the pH, the more effective the acid is on the skin. It will work better, penetrate better and deeper, with a more concentrated effect. It can also be more irritating, because it is more "powerful." When an acid product is formulated with a pH below 2.0, all of its acid percentage is essentially "free" or available to work effectively on the skin.AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, malic, citric, tartaric, etc.) are basically ineffective over 4.0 pH. To exfoliate the surface of the skin, the pH must be below 4.0. and the product percentage must be over 5%. 5% to 8% with a pH of 3.0 - 4.0 is the MINIMUM level for a daily use AHA; this will not treat scars or rebuild collagen.BHAs (salicylic acid) are also basically ineffective over 4.0 pH. To exfoliate the skin, and unclog pores, the pH must be below 4.0 and the product percentage must be over 1%. (1% to 2% with a pH of 3.0 - 4.0 is the MINIMUM level for a daily use BHA. Skin with very clogged pores may need a higher concentration, up to 5%, and lower pH.Generally speaking an acid is effective for approximately 20 to 30 minutes on the skin surface. After that point the skin pH has risen enough to lessen the exfoliation action on the skin, and the acid is effectively neutralized. During this 30 minute time frame, the acid is working at effective levels. Anything applied after 30 minutes will not hamper the effect of your acid, as the pH has already changed, and the acid action has slowed a lot.BRANDPRODUCTEXFOLIATING ACTIVES (WITH %)PHSOURCESCliniqueMild Clarifying Lotionsalicylic (0,5%)2,9Paula's ChoiceBiologique RechercheP50 Lotion 1970lactic; salicylic3,5Skin & TonicsBiologique RechercheP50 Lotiongluconolactone; lactic; citric; malic; phytic; salicylic3,0Skin & TonicsClarinsGentle Exfoliator Brightening Tonerglycolic; tartaric; salicylic?Email from company (yet to be answered).PixiGlow Tonicglycolic (5%)4-5Skin & Tonics; Suddenly Similar; LabMuffin#####I hope this little spreadsheets could help you a little with evaluating your exfoliation routine. [Skin Concerns] Figured out how to get rid of my "chicken skin"!

Beauty Tips For Body Care
So, "chicken skin" is hereditary in my family. My dad has it, and so does my brother. I think my grandpa (dad's dad) has it too. I've had it on the back of my arms since I was in middle school or earlier, and I hate wearing tank tops or short-sleeved shirts in the summer because it's been so bad. It's red, bumpy, and looks like I've got a bunch of zits or something even though they're just bumps.Anyway, I bought pur minerals' miracle mist a while back for my face. It made my face like an oil slick after a week, so I stopped using it. I waited too long to return it, so I tried it on my arms. I've been using 3 sprays per arm every night before bed. About a month later, and the redness is almost 100% gone, my arms are smooth feeling, and they look so much better!!! There are still some bumps there of course, but soooo few compared to what it was before. And they aren't angry-red anymore. More light pink or skin-colored.I feel like I can wear a tank top now without feeling self-conscious about my arms. Yay! Perfect timing for spring/summer coming up.Anyway, I just wanted to put that out there if anyone else is struggling with combating their "chicken skin".

[Misc] I am so happy I have acne. And here is why...

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I'm reading a book right now called Think and Grow Rich. In it Napoleon Hill talks about how his son was born nearly deaf. Despite his sons seeming flaw, Hill said he had a desire to help his son learn and thrive in this world. He talks about something that just blew my mind. He says that every flaw we have brings with it the seed of advantage. So as any acne sufferer, I asked what benefits acne brought to me.And amazingly I realized acne has changed my life - for the better. It has seriously made me consider my lifestyle. This last year I went from a binge drinking, processed food eating college kid, to the healthiest person I know. I stopped drinking and now eat a strict paleo diet. I am sure to get 8 hours of sleep a night and exercise profusely. I began to do all these things in my lifestyle to tackle my acne.Acne also taught me to be patient. It taught me that nobody in life is perfect including myself. It taught me I shouldn't have a massive ego. It taught me that if people judge me based on my looks they probably aren't good people to have around.Acne has changed my life - FOR THE BETTER. My lifestyle changes to conquer acne have worked for the most part. My skin isn't perfect but it has improved immensely. But more importantly my life has improved immensely. I'm doing better in school and am incredibly excited for my future. I think that goes hand in hand with the lifestyle changes I made to get rid of my acne.If I had perfect skin I'd still probably be getting 4 hours of sleep, drinking red bull, and eating frozen pizza 4 nights a week. I'd also probably have cut my life short by 15 years and gotten fat.Acne fucking saved me. It saved my life. And MOST importantly. When I neglect my body. When I eat processed shit. When I go get drunk or pull an all nighter - my acne comes back. And it's a constant reminder that I need to hold my lifestyle values seriously, and for that, acne is a great asset to my life. It keeps me disciplined, it keeps me humble.Stop thinking about any handicap you have as negative. You seriously don't have to. Look at how your handicaps can be used to your advantage. There are countless examples of people who didn't let a flaw get them down. Or stop them.

[skin concerns] Ringworm that WONT GO AWAY and is spreading EVERYWHERE

Beauty Tips For Body Care
Hey guys, I made a post about a little red patch I noticed a while back and I suspected it could be ringworm. Well shit it was ringworm.I went to the doctor and she basically said, "use this OTC cream because the tablets are bad for your liver." Okay sure. Two weeks of using the cream did nothing and it spread. Awesome.Coworker suggested Blue Star ointment. That helped a little, but it still kept spreading. Now there are small spots ALL OVER my back, sides, chest, stomach, left thigh, and shoulders. I have been pouring straight up vinegar on my arms because I am so scared of spreading it to the animals I work with. I smell like vinegar 24/7 and I itch HORRIBLY. I don't ever scratch though because I am scared of spreading it.I wash my sheets every other day. I only wear my clothes once before washing. I bathe with Selsun Blue. I sleep with my boyfriend and he hasn't showed any signs of it...? WTF! Help guys.Should I go to my doc for tablets?? I understand it is a doctor's decision, but I guess I don't know if this is serious enough to merit going back. [Routine help]My shower has a built in steam room. How can I effectively implement it into my skin care routine?

Beauty Tips For Body Care
I am a teenage boy with a fairly significant acne problem. I have read that steam rooms do a great job clearing pores. Is there a way to utilize my steam room to help clear my skin daily/every few days? Should I use it right when I get home from school or at night?
